Introduction: The superposition of distribution maps of HbS and plasmodium falciparum is at the origin of several theories on the relationship between sickle cell disease and malaria. Objective: Determine the sociodemographic aspect and identify the main complications of SS sickle cell disease in children with severe malaria at the Donka Pediatrics Department. Methods: Prospective, descriptive study, lasting 12 months from January 01 to December 31, 2021 including all children from 0-15 years hospitalized whose diagnoses of severe malaria and SS sickle cell anemia were retained during the study period. Results: The frequency was 6.65%, The age group of 5-9 years represented 41.93% with a sex ratio (M/F) = 1.3. Frequency peaks were encountered in June, July and August (36.56%). Consanguineous marriage was found in 65.59%. Fever was present in 100% of our patients followed by osteo-articular pain (93.54%). Malaria severity criteria were represented by prostration with 81.7%, followed by anemia (77.42%), hyperparasitaemia (46.23%), respiratory distress (45.16%) and seizures (34.4%). Complications were dominated by bronchopneumopathy, osteomyelitis, dactylitis and necrosis of the femoral head. The evolution was favorable in 95.70% of cases. Conclusion: The prevalence of sickle cell disease associated with severe malaria remains high in the department with consanguinity often found. Reducing these two pathologies will necessarily involve the use of means of prevention against malaria and premarital examinations.

Introduction: Bacterial meningitis is a serious, life-threatening infection; its diagnosis must be early and its management must be rapid. Bacteria commonly implicated in children are Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumonia and Haemophilus influenzae type b. The specific etiology is a function of age, immune function, vaccination status, genetics, and geographic location. Objective: To identify the factors associated with death in children aged 0 to 15 with bacterial meningitis in the pediatric department of Donka National Hospital. Methods: Prospective, descriptive and analytical study of 6 months (April 12 to October 12, 2022) including children aged 0-15 years with bacterial meningitis confirmed by cyto-bacteriological analysis of CSF. Results: From of a total of 766 children, we collected 118 cases of bacterial meningitis, either frequency of 15.4%. The average age was 3.97 ± 4.06 years with extremes of 1 month and 15 years. The sex ratio was 1.5 in favor of boys. Altered consciousness (p < 0.001), delay in consultation > 3 days (p = 0.01), poor nutritional status (p = 0.0000063904), cloudy appearance of the CSF (p = 0.003) and presence of serious signs (p = 0.0000050753) such as shock, generalized hypertonia, signs of decortication and decerebration were poor prognostic factors. The mortality rate observed in this work was 23.7%. Conclusion: Child hood bacterial meningitis often leads to death in children admitted to the pediatric ward of Donka National Hospital. Children who received this diagnosis and who also had an alteration of consciousness a consultation delay of more than 3 days with signs of severity had an increased risk of dying.

This paper aims to develop and validate a questionnaire to measure the prioritization of strategies to transitioning towards a circular economy and to compare different countries. We proposed a questionnaire based on a five-level ordinal scale to evaluate the 24 strategies of the circular economy under a set of ten criteria given technical issues, as well as social, environmental and economic dimensions of sustainability. Each strategy was defined and evaluated by the participants on the same scale, who are stakeholders involved in the transition towards a circular economy. The validation was conducted by two main procedures, including semantic validation through 17 experts from five countries and statistical validation by 347 survey respondents from 25 countries. The results show that the questionnaire seems a reliable and valid tool to analyze which circular economy strategies countries, regions and cities prioritize. Few studies have been conducted to validate instruments about the circular economy; they are focused at the micro level, (industry). Studies that validate measurement instruments regarding the circular economy at the macro level are lacking. This study is the first one to validate the circular economy instrument at the macro level. It can help researchers and practitioners from public and private sectors from a variety of organizations in proposing actions to enable the transition and create performance indicators.

The Bedouin syndrome represents social interactions based on four premises: a friend of my friend is my friend, a friend of my enemy is my enemy, an enemy of my friend is my enemy, and an enemy of my enemy is my friend. These extensive associations exist in many social and economic relationships, such as market competition, neighborhood relations, political behavior, student gangs, organized crime, and the violent behavior of sports spectators (hooliganism) worldwide. This work tests the Bedouin syndrome hypothesis considering the violent behavior in the football fan culture. We construct relational networks of social affinities to represent the social interactions of organized fan bases (Torcidas organizadas) involved in hooligan violence in Pernambuco, Brazil. Contrary to prior expectations, the results evidence no statistical support for the Bedouin syndrome in 13 of the 15 analyzed clubs. There is weak statistical support in two interactions and strong statistical support in one interaction to state that a friend of my enemy is my friend (instead of an enemy). The only support for the Bedouin syndrome is circumstantial based on a prior assumption of an alliance. We propose a network development that can be more suitable to represent football fans’ violent behavior. The results contribute to understanding the hooliganism social phenomenon in football-rooted cultures and their impact on public health, identifying potential determinants for organized violence by young spectators’ and supporting police strategies by defining relevance scores for the most potential clashes and coalitions of gangs.

This article aims to analyze the relationship between expert evidence and wrongful convictions. It is a topic that is still little explored in Brazil, but with a wide debate in the USA. For this reason, it is used as the basis of the American model to answer the following questions: 1) What are the main American associations and databases related to the reversals of wrongful convictions? 2) What are the reflexes of the American approach in United Kingdom, Canada and Brazil? 3) How do expert evidence relate to wrongful convictions? 4) Are there criteria applicable to expert evidence that can be implemented in Brazil in order to reduce the chance of expert errors and misinterpretation by the judges? It is expected to present the point and the counterpoint in the use of expert evidence, to address the merits of associations that seek to reverse wrongful convictions and to suggest criteria to improve the way the experts dialogue with the judges.

This study aims to identify the main barriers to fully implement the reverse logistics of e-waste in Brazil and prioritize them under a Multicriteria Decision Aid approach (MCDA) according to the perceptions of small and medium-sized companies, consumers, and the Brazilian government. Hence, the study was conducted in two steps: (i) Systematic literature review to identify the main barriers, with data collection carried out through a documental analysis, and (ii) MCDA application, through self-administered questionnaires. In order to deal with the uncertainty in subjective measures, the method of Composition of Probabilistic Preferences (CPP) was applied to analyze the results of each group of decision maker, opting for the progressive-pessimistic scenario to prioritize the barriers to be solved. As main results, a priority classification of the internal and external barriers considering each category of decision maker was obtained. Moreover, it was verified that the government and micro and small companies agreed that internal barriers with an organizational nature or related to infrastructure management are the main obstacles to the implementation of reverse logistics. On the other hand, consumers consider the managerial or organizational barriers as a priority.

In this paper we provide forecasts of the cumulative number of confirmed reported cases in Brazil, specifically in Pernambuco and Ceara, by using the generalized logistic growth model, the Richards growth model and Susceptible, Un-quanrantined infected, Quarantined infected, Confirmed infected (SUQC) phenomenological model. We rely on the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), root-mean-square error (RMSE) and mean absolute relative error (MARE) to quantify the quality of the models fits during the calibrationAll of these analyzes have been valid until the present date, April 14, 2020. The different models provide insights of our scenario predictions.

O gerenciamento de processos de negócios (BPM) é um instrumento que auxilia no monitoramento do desempenho das organizações, promovendo uma visão sistêmica do ambiente interno e externo a organização, com relação a todos os participantes e processos, bem como suas inter-relações. O objetivo desse trabalho é avaliar o relacionamento e influência entre os elementos centrais às práticas de BPM e o desempenho organizacional, considerando informações de empresas situadas no Arranjo Produtivo Local (APL) Têxtil do Agreste de Pernambuco, haja vista sua relevância dentro da economia internacional, nacional e regional. As hipóteses propostas quanto ao relacionamento entre os processos foram testadas utilizando o método dos mínimos quadrados parciais, com o auxílio do software SmartPLS 3.0. Como resultados observados, são destacadas a proposição e confirmação de relacionamentos, dentre outros, ao alinhamento estratégico e governança, bem como a governança e o uso de tecnologia da informação, e o uso de tecnologia da informação e cultura organizacional.
