We give a sufficient condition for H\"older continuity at a boundary point for quasiminima of double-phase functionals of $p,q$-Laplace type, in the setting of metric measure spaces equipped with a doubling measure and supporting a Poincar\'e inequality. We use a variational approach based on De Giorgi-type conditions to give a pointwise estimate near a boundary point. The proofs are based on a careful phase analysis and estimates in the intrinsic geometries.

In this work, we perform on-chip quantum random number generation (QRNG) that uses a novel differential amplifier configuration for conjugate homodyne detection. Leveraging separate integrated photonics and integrated analog circuit platforms, we present an alternative method for QRNG. This approach exploits the observable $\hat{\text{Z}}$, derived from the sum of squared conjugate quadrature distributions which we compare to the traditional single quadrature approach. Utilizing this method, we report a shot noise clearance (SNC) of 25.6 dB and a common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) of 69 dB for our homodyne detection system. We used a variety of design tools to model and predict performance and compare results with our measurements. The realization of our QRNG system consists of a 90{\deg} optical hybrid, a dual differential transimpedance amplifier (TIA), and a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) used for the real-time post-processing to produce a uniform random bitstream. The detection of sensitive content in large datasets is crucial for ensuring that shared and analysed data is free from harmful material. However, current moderation tools, such as external APIs, suffer from limitations in customisation, accuracy across diverse sensitive categories, and privacy concerns. Additionally, existing datasets and open-source models focus predominantly on toxic language, leaving gaps in detecting other sensitive categories such as substance abuse or self-harm. In this paper, we put forward a unified dataset tailored for social media content moderation across six sensitive categories: conflictual language, profanity, sexually explicit material, drug-related content, self-harm, and spam. By collecting and annotating data with consistent retrieval strategies and guidelines, we address the shortcomings of previous focalised research. Our analysis demonstrates that fine-tuning large language models (LLMs) on this novel dataset yields significant improvements in detection performance compared to open off-the-shelf models such as LLaMA, and even proprietary OpenAI models, which underperform by 10-15% overall. This limitation is even more pronounced on popular moderation APIs, which cannot be easily tailored to specific sensitive content categories, among others.

Authorship has entangled style and content inside. Authors frequently write about the same topics in the same style, so when different authors write about the exact same topic the easiest way out to distinguish them is by understanding the nuances of their style. Modern neural models for authorship can pick up these features using contrastive learning, however, some amount of content leakage is always present. Our aim is to reduce the inevitable impact and correlation between content and authorship. We present a technique to use contrastive learning (InfoNCE) with additional hard negatives synthetically created using a semantic similarity model. This disentanglement technique aims to distance the content embedding space from the style embedding space, leading to embeddings more informed by style. We demonstrate the performance with ablations on two different datasets and compare them on out-of-domain challenges. Improvements are clearly shown on challenging evaluations on prolific authors with up to a 10% increase in accuracy when the settings are particularly hard. Trials on challenges also demonstrate the preservation of zero-shot capabilities of this method as fine tuning.

The metaphor studies community has developed numerous valuable labelled corpora in various languages over the years. Many of these resources are not only unknown to the NLP community, but are also often not easily shared among the researchers. Both in human sciences and in NLP, researchers could benefit from a centralised database of labelled resources, easily accessible and unified under an identical format. To facilitate this, we present MetaphorShare, a website to integrate metaphor datasets making them open and accessible. With this effort, our aim is to encourage researchers to share and upload more datasets in any language in order to facilitate metaphor studies and the development of future metaphor processing NLP systems. Customer demand, regulatory pressure, and engineering efficiency are the driving forces behind the industry-wide trend of moving from siloed engines and services that are optimized in isolation to highly integrated solutions. This is confirmed by the wide adoption of open formats, shared component libraries, and the meteoric success of integrated data lake experiences such as Microsoft Fabric. In this paper, we study the implications of this trend to Query Optimizer (QO) and discuss our experience of building Calcite and extending Cascades into QO components of Microsoft SQL Server, Fabric Data Warehouse (DW), and SCOPE. We weigh the pros and cons of a drastic change in direction: moving from bespoke QOs or library-sharing (\`a la Calcite) to rewriting the QO stack and fully embracing Query Optimizer as a Service (QOaaS). We report on some early successes and stumbles as we explore these ideas with prototypes compatible with Fabric DW and Spark. The benefits include centralized workload-level optimizations, multi-engine federation, and accelerated feature creation, but the challenges are equally daunting. We plan to engage CIDR audience in a debate on this exciting topic.

We prove that the categories of weight modules over the simple $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal vertex operator algebras at fractional admissible levels and central charges are rigid (and hence the categories of weight modules are braided ribbon categories) and that the decomposition formulae of fusion products of simple projective modules conjectured by Thomas Creutzig, David Ridout and collaborators hold (including when the decomposition involves summands that are indecomposable yet not simple). In addition to solving this old open problem, we develop new techniques for the construction of intertwining operators by means of integrating screening currents over certain cycles, which are expected to be of independent interest, due to their applicability to many other algebras. The MUltiplexed Survey Telescope (MUST) is a 6.5-meter telescope under development. Dedicated to highly-multiplexed, wide-field spectroscopic surveys, MUST observes over 20,000 targets simultaneously using 6.2-mm pitch positioning robots within a ~5 deg2 field of view. MUST aims to carry out the first Stage-V spectroscopic survey in the 2030s to map the 3D Universe with over 100 million galaxies and quasars, spanning from the nearby Universe to redshift z~5.5, corresponding to around 1 billion years after the Big Bang. To cover this extensive redshift range, we present an initial conceptual target selection algorithm for different types of galaxies, from local bright galaxies, luminous red galaxies, and emission line galaxies to high-redshift (2 < z < 5.5) Lyman-break galaxies. Using Fisher forecasts, we demonstrate that MUST can address fundamental questions in cosmology, including the nature of dark energy, test of gravity theories, and investigations into primordial physics. Ontology embeddings map classes, relations, and individuals in ontologies into $\mathbb{R}^n$, and within $\mathbb{R}^n$ similarity between entities can be computed or new axioms inferred. For ontologies in the Description Logic $\mathcal{EL}^{++}$, several embedding methods have been developed that explicitly generate models of an ontology. However, these methods suffer from some limitations; they do not distinguish between statements that are unprovable and provably false, and therefore they may use entailed statements as negatives. Furthermore, they do not utilize the deductive closure of an ontology to identify statements that are inferred but not asserted. We evaluated a set of embedding methods for $\mathcal{EL}^{++}$ ontologies, incorporating several modifications that aim to make use of the ontology deductive closure. In particular, we designed novel negative losses that account both for the deductive closure and different types of negatives and formulated evaluation methods for knowledge base completion. We propose some general growth conditions on the function $% f=f\left( x,\xi \right) $, including the so-called natural growth, or polynomial, or $p,q-$growth conditions, or even exponential growth, in order to obtain that any local minimizer of the energy integral $\;\int_{\Omega }f\left( x,Du\right) dx\,$ is locally Lipschitz continuous in $\Omega $. In fact this is the fundamental step for further regularity: the local boundedness of the gradient of any Lipschitz continuous local minimizer a-posteriori makes irrelevant the behavior of the integrand $f\left( x,\xi \right) $ as $\left\vert \xi \right\vert \rightarrow +\infty $; i.e., the general growth conditions a posteriori are reduced to a standard growth, with the possibility to apply the classical regularity theory. In other words, we reduce some classes of \textit{non-uniform} elliptic variational problems to a context of uniform ellipticity.

Obtaining well-calibrated photometric redshift probability densities for galaxies without a spectroscopic measurement remains a challenge. Deep learning discriminative models, typically fed with multi-band galaxy images, can produce outputs that mimic probability densities and achieve state-of-the-art accuracy. However, such models may be affected by miscalibration that would result in discrepancies between the model outputs and the actual distributions of true redshifts. Our work develops a novel method called the Contrastive Learning and Adaptive KNN for Photometric Redshift (CLAP) that resolves this issue. It leverages supervised contrastive learning (SCL) and k-nearest neighbours (KNN) to construct and calibrate raw probability density estimates, and implements a refitting procedure to resume end-to-end discriminative models ready to produce final estimates for large-scale imaging data. The harmonic mean is adopted to combine an ensemble of estimates from multiple realisations for improving accuracy. Our experiments demonstrate that CLAP takes advantage of both deep learning and KNN, outperforming benchmark methods on the calibration of probability density estimates and retaining high accuracy and computational efficiency. With reference to CLAP, we point out that miscalibration is particularly sensitive to the method-induced excessive correlations among data instances in addition to the unaccounted-for epistemic uncertainties. Reducing the uncertainties may not guarantee the removal of miscalibration due to the presence of such excessive correlations, yet this is a problem for conventional deep learning methods rather than CLAP. These discussions underscore the robustness of CLAP for obtaining photometric redshift probability densities required by astrophysical and cosmological applications. The Duke Robotics Club is proud to present our robot for the 2023 RoboSub Competition: Oogway. Oogway marks one of the largest design overhauls in club history. Beyond a revamped formfactor, some of Oogway's notable features include all-new computer vision software, advanced sonar integration, novel acoustics hardware processing, and upgraded stereoscopic cameras. Oogway was built on the principle of independent, well-integrated, and reliable subsystems. Individual components and subsystems were tested and designed separately. Oogway's most advanced capabilities are a result of the tight integration between these subsystems. Such examples include sonar-assisted computer vision algorithms and robot-agnostic controls configured in part through the robot's 3D model. These additions enabled Oogway to prequalify for Robosub 2024.

Chemical separations data are typically analysed in the time domain using methods that integrate the discrete elution bands. Integrating the same chemical components across several samples must account for retention time drift over the course of an entire experiment as the physical characteristics of the separation are altered through several cycles of use. Failure to consistently integrate the components within a matrix of $M \times N$ samples and variables create artifacts that have a profound effect on the analysis and interpretation of the data. This work presents an alternative where the raw separations data are analysed in the frequency domain to account for the offset of the chromatographic peaks as a matrix of complex Fourier coefficients. We present a generalization of the permutation testing, and visualization steps in ANOVA-Simultaneous Component Analysis (ASCA) to handle complex matrices, and use this method to analyze a synthetic dataset with known significant factors and compare the interpretation of a real dataset via its peak table and frequency domain representations., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Identifying client needs to provide optimal services is crucial in tourist destination management. The events held in tourist destinations may help to meet those needs and thus contribute to tourist satisfaction. As with product management, the creation of hierarchical catalogs to classify those events can aid event management. The events that can be found on the internet are listed in dispersed, heterogeneous sources, which makes direct classification a difficult, time-consuming task. The main aim of this work is to create a novel process for automatically classifying an eclectic variety of tourist events using a hierarchical taxonomy, which can be applied to support tourist destination management. Leveraging data science methods such as CRISP-DM, supervised machine learning, and natural language processing techniques, the automatic classification process proposed here allows the creation of a normalized catalog across very different geographical regions. Therefore, we can build catalogs with consistent filters, allowing users to find events regardless of the event categories assigned at source, if any. This is very valuable for companies that offer this kind of information across multiple regions, such as airlines, travel agencies or hotel chains. Ultimately, this tool has the potential to revolutionize the way companies and end users interact with tourist events information.

Goldman defined a symplectic form on the smooth locus of the $G$-character variety of a closed, oriented surface $S$ for a Lie group $G$ satisfying very general hypotheses. He then studied the Hamiltonian flows associated to $G$-invariant functions $G \to \mathbb R$ obtained by evaluation on a simple closed curve and proved that they are generalized twist flows. In this article, we investigate the Hamiltonian flows on (subsets of the) $G$-character variety induced by evaluating a $G$-invariant multi-function $G^k \to \mathbb R$ on a tuple $ \underline{\alpha} \in \pi_1(S)^k$. We introduce the notion of a subsurface deformation along a supporting subsurface $S_0$ for $\underline{\alpha}$ and prove that the Hamiltonian flow of an induced invariant multi-function is of this type. We also give a formula for the Poisson bracket between two functions induced by invariant multi-functions and prove that they Poisson commute if their supporting subsurfaces are disjoint. In the dynamic realm of social media, diverse topics are discussed daily, transcending linguistic boundaries. However, the complexities of understanding and categorising this content across various languages remain an important challenge with traditional techniques like topic modelling often struggling to accommodate this multilingual diversity. In this paper, we introduce X-Topic, a multilingual dataset featuring content in four distinct languages (English, Spanish, Japanese, and Greek), crafted for the purpose of tweet topic classification. Our dataset includes a wide range of topics, tailored for social media content, making it a valuable resource for scientists and professionals working on cross-linguistic analysis, the development of robust multilingual models, and computational scientists studying online dialogue. Readability-controlled text simplification (RCTS) rewrites texts to lower readability levels while preserving their meaning. RCTS models often depend on parallel corpora with readability annotations on both source and target sides. Such datasets are scarce and difficult to curate, especially at the sentence level. To reduce reliance on parallel data, we explore using instruction-tuned large language models for zero-shot RCTS. Through automatic and manual evaluations, we examine: (1) how different types of contextual information affect a model's ability to generate sentences with the desired readability, and (2) the trade-off between achieving target readability and preserving meaning. Results show that all tested models struggle to simplify sentences (especially to the lowest levels) due to models' limitations and characteristics of the source sentences that impede adequate rewriting. Our experiments also highlight the need for better automatic evaluation metrics tailored to RCTS, as standard ones often misinterpret common simplification operations, and inaccurately assess readability and meaning preservation.

The tumultuous effects of ultraviolet photons that source cosmic reionization, the subsequent compression and shock-heating of low-density regions, and the modulation of baryons in shallow potential wells induced by the passage of ionization fronts, collectively introduce perturbations to the evolution of the intergalactic medium in the post-reionization era. These enduring fluctuations persist deep into the post-reionization era, casting a challenge upon precision cosmology endeavors targeting tracers in this cosmic era. Simultaneously, these relics from reionization also present a unique opportunity to glean insights into the astrophysics that govern the epoch of reionization. In this work, we propose a first study of the cross-correlation of \lya forest and 21 cm intensity mapping, accounting for the repercussions of inhomogeneous reionization in the post-reionization era. We investigate the ability of SKA $\times$ DESI-like, SKA $\times$ MUST-like, and PUMA $\times$ MUST-like instrumental setups to achieve a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the redshift range $3.5 \leq z \leq 4$. Moreover, we assess how alterations in integration time, survey area, and reionization scenarios impact the SNR. Furthermore, we forecast the cross-correlation's potential to constrain cosmological parameters under varying assumptions: considering or disregarding reionization relics, marginalizing over reionization astrophysics, and assuming perfect knowledge of reionization. Notably, our findings underscore the remarkable capability of a futuristic PUMA $\times$ MUST-like setup, with a modest 100-hour integration time over a 100 sq. deg. survey, to constrain the ionization efficiency error to $\sigma_\zeta = 3.42 $., Comment: Comments welcome! We explore the Schmidt-Kennicutt (SK) relations and the star formation efficiency per free-fall time ($\eff$), mirroring observational studies, in numerical simulations of filamentary molecular clouds undergoing gravitational contraction. We find that {\it a)} collapsing clouds accurately replicate the observed SK relations for galactic clouds and {\it b)} the so-called efficiency per free-fall time ($\eff$) is small and constant in space and in time, with values similar to those found in local clouds. This constancy is a consequence of the similar radial scaling of the free-fall time and the internal mass in density structures with spherically-averaged density profiles near $r^{-2}$. We additionally show that {\it c)} the star formation rate (SFR) increases rapidly in time; {\it d)} the low values of $\eff$ are due to the different time periods over which $\tauff$ and $\tausf$ are evaluated, together with the fast increasing SFR, and {\it e)} the fact that star clusters are significantly denser than the gas clumps from which they form is a natural consequence of the fast increasing SFR, the continuous replenishment of the star-forming gas by the accretion flow, and the near $r^{-2}$ density profile generated by the collapse Finally, we argue that the interpretation of $\eff$ as an efficiency is problematic because its maximum value is not bounded by unity, and because the total gas mass in the clouds is not fixed, but rather depends on the environment where clouds are embedded. In summary, our results show that the SK relation, the typical observed values of $\eff$, and the mass density of clusters arise as a natural consequence of gravitational contraction., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

Tunable biphoton quantum entanglement generated from nonlinear processes is highly desirable for cutting-edge quantum technologies, yet its tunability is substantially constrained by the symmetry of material nonlinear tensors. Here, we overcome this constraint by introducing symmetry-breaking in nonlinear polarization to generate optically tunable biphoton entanglement at picosecond speeds. Asymmetric optical responses have made breakthroughs in classical applications like non-reciprocal light transmission. We now experimentally demonstrate the nonlinear asymmetry response for biphoton entanglement using a semiconductor metasurface incorporating [110] InGaP nano-resonators with structural asymmetry. We realize continuous tuning of polarization entanglement from near-unentangled states to a Bell state. This tunability can also extend to produce tailored hyperentanglement. Furthermore, our nanoscale entanglement source features an ultra-high coincidence-to-accidental ratio of $\approx7\times10^4$, outperforming existing semiconductor flat optics by two orders of magnitude. The spin structure functions of the proton and the deuteron were measured during the EG4 experiment at Jefferson Lab in 2006. Data were collected for longitudinally polarized electron scattering off longitudinally polarized NH$_3$ and ND$_3$ targets, for $Q^2$ values as small as 0.012 and 0.02 GeV$^2$, respectively, using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). This is the archival paper of the EG4 experiment that summaries the previously reported results of the polarized structure functions $g_1$, $A_1F_1$, and their moments $\overline \Gamma_1$, $\overline \gamma_0$, and $\overline I_{TT}$, for both the proton and the deuteron. In addition, we report on new results on the neutron $g_1$ extracted by combining proton and deuteron data and correcting for Fermi smearing, and on the neutron moments $\overline \Gamma_1$, $\overline \gamma_0$, and $\overline I_{TT}$ formed directly from those of the proton and the deuteron. Our data are in good agreement with the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for the proton, deuteron, and neutron. Furthermore, the isovector combination was formed for $g_1$ and the Bjorken integral $\overline \Gamma_1^{p-n}$, and compared to available theoretical predictions. All of our results provide for the first time extensive tests of spin observable predictions from chiral effective field theory ($\chi$EFT) in a $Q^2$ range commensurate with the pion mass. The study of third-order statistics in large-scale structure analyses has been hampered by the increased complexity of bispectrum estimators (compared to power spectra), the large dimensionality of the data vector, and the difficulty in estimating its covariance matrix. In this paper we present the filtered-squared bispectrum (FSB), an estimator of the projected bispectrum effectively consisting of the cross-correlation between the square of a field filtered on a range of scales and the original field. Within this formalism, we are able to recycle much of the infrastructure built around power spectrum measurement to construct an estimator that is both fast and robust against mode-coupling effects caused by incomplete sky observations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the existing techniques for the estimation of analytical power spectrum covariances can be used within this formalism to calculate the bispectrum covariance at very high accuracy, naturally accounting for the most relevant Gaussian and non-Gaussian contributions in a model-independent manner., Comment: 34 pages, 13 figures

In this paper we explore independently for the first time three chemical potentials (baryon $\mu_B$, charged $\mu_Q$, and strange $\mu_S$) in the Chiral mean-field (CMF) model. We designed and implemented \texttt{CMF++}, a new version of the CMF model rewritten in \texttt{C++} that is optimized, modular, and well-documented. \texttt{CMF++} has been integrated into the MUSES Calculation Engine as a free and open source software module. The runtime improved in more than 4 orders of magnitude across all 3 chemical potentials, when compared to the legacy code. Here we focus on the zero temperature case and study stable, as well as metastable and unstable, vacuum, hadronic, and quark phases, showing how phase boundaries vary with the different chemical potentials. Due to the significant numerical improvements in \texttt{CMF++}, we can calculate for the first time high-order susceptibilities within the CMF framework to study the properties of the quark deconfinement phase transition. We found phases of matter that include a light hadronic phase, strangeness-dominated hadronic phase, and quark deconfinement within our $\mu_B$, $\mu_S$, $\mu_Q$ phase space. Memes are an increasingly prevalent element of online discourse in social networks, especially among young audiences. They carry ideas and messages that range from humorous to hateful, and are widely consumed. Their potentially high impact requires adequate means of control to moderate their use in large scale. In this work, we propose SimCLIP a deep learning-based architecture for cross-modal understanding of memes, leveraging a pre-trained CLIP encoder to produce context-aware embeddings and a Siamese fusion technique to capture the interactions between text and image. We perform an extensive experimentation on seven meme classification tasks across six datasets. We establish a new state of the art in Memotion7k with a 7.25% relative F1-score improvement, and achieve super-human performance on Harm-P with 13.73% F1-Score improvement. Our approach demonstrates the potential for compact meme classification models, enabling accurate and efficient meme monitoring. We study the constraint on $f(R)$ gravity that can be obtained by photometric primary probes of the Euclid mission. Our focus is the dependence of the constraint on the theoretical modelling of the nonlinear matter power spectrum. In the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity model, we consider four different predictions for the ratio between the power spectrum in $f(R)$ and that in $\Lambda$CDM: a fitting formula, the halo model reaction approach, ReACT and two emulators based on dark matter only $N$-body simulations, FORGE and e-Mantis. These predictions are added to the MontePython implementation to predict the angular power spectra for weak lensing (WL), photometric galaxy clustering and their cross-correlation. By running Markov Chain Monte Carlo, we compare constraints on parameters and investigate the bias of the recovered $f(R)$ parameter if the data are created by a different model. For the pessimistic setting of WL, one dimensional bias for the $f(R)$ parameter, $\log_{10}|f_{R0}|$, is found to be $0.5 \sigma$ when FORGE is used to create the synthetic data with $\log_{10}|f_{R0}| =-5.301$ and fitted by e-Mantis. The impact of baryonic physics on WL is studied by using a baryonification emulator BCemu. For the optimistic setting, the $f(R)$ parameter and two main baryon parameters are well constrained despite the degeneracies among these parameters. However, the difference in the nonlinear dark matter prediction can be compensated by the adjustment of baryon parameters, and the one-dimensional marginalised constraint on $\log_{10}|f_{R0}|$ is biased. This bias can be avoided in the pessimistic setting at the expense of weaker constraints. For the pessimistic setting, using the $\Lambda$CDM synthetic data for WL, we obtain the prior-independent upper limit of $\log_{10}|f_{R0}|< -5.6$. The Euclid mission will measure cosmological parameters with unprecedented precision. To distinguish between cosmological models, it is essential to generate realistic mock observables from cosmological simulations that were run in both the standard $\Lambda$-cold-dark-matter ($\Lambda$CDM) paradigm and in many non-standard models beyond $\Lambda$CDM. We present the scientific results from a suite of cosmological N-body simulations using non-standard models including dynamical dark energy, k-essence, interacting dark energy, modified gravity, massive neutrinos, and primordial non-Gaussianities. We investigate how these models affect the large-scale-structure formation and evolution in addition to providing synthetic observables that can be used to test and constrain these models with Euclid data. We developed a custom pipeline based on the Rockstar halo finder and the nbodykit large-scale structure toolkit to analyse the particle output of non-standard simulations and generate mock observables such as halo and void catalogues, mass density fields, and power spectra in a consistent way. We compare these observables with those from the standard $\Lambda$CDM model and quantify the deviations. We find that non-standard cosmological models can leave significant imprints on the synthetic observables that we have generated. Our results demonstrate that non-standard cosmological N-body simulations provide valuable insights into the physics of dark energy and dark matter, which is essential to maximising the scientific return of Euclid., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

To constrain models beyond $\Lambda$CDM, the development of the Euclid analysis pipeline requires simulations that capture the nonlinear phenomenology of such models. We present an overview of numerical methods and $N$-body simulation codes developed to study the nonlinear regime of structure formation in alternative dark energy and modified gravity theories. We review a variety of numerical techniques and approximations employed in cosmological $N$-body simulations to model the complex phenomenology of scenarios beyond $\Lambda$CDM. This includes discussions on solving nonlinear field equations, accounting for fifth forces, and implementing screening mechanisms. Furthermore, we conduct a code comparison exercise to assess the reliability and convergence of different simulation codes across a range of models. Our analysis demonstrates a high degree of agreement among the outputs of different simulation codes, providing confidence in current numerical methods for modelling cosmic structure formation beyond $\Lambda$CDM. We present the framework for measuring angular power spectra in the Euclid mission. The observables in galaxy surveys, such as galaxy clustering and cosmic shear, are not continuous fields, but discrete sets of data, obtained only at the positions of galaxies. We show how to compute the angular power spectra of such discrete data sets, without treating observations as maps of an underlying continuous field that is overlaid with a noise component. This formalism allows us to compute exact theoretical expectations for our measured spectra, under a number of assumptions that we track explicitly. In particular, we obtain exact expressions for the additive biases ("shot noise") in angular galaxy clustering and cosmic shear. For efficient practical computations, we introduce a spin-weighted spherical convolution with a well-defined convolution theorem, which allows us to apply exact theoretical predictions to finite-resolution maps, including HEALPix. When validating our methodology, we find that our measurements are biased by less than 1% of their statistical uncertainty in simulations of Euclid's first data release., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures. We explain the large variety of star formation laws in terms of one single, simple law that can be inferred from the definition of the star formation rate and basic algebra. The resulting equation, $\SFR = \eff\ \Mcollapsing/\tauff$, although it has been presented elsewhere, is interpreted in terms of clouds undergoing collapse { rather than being turbulence-supported, an idea that different groups have pursued this century}. Under such assumption, one can explain the constancy of $\eff$, the different intra-cloud correlations observed in Milky Way's molecular clouds, as well as the resolved and unresolved extragalactic relationships between SFR and a measurement of the mass in CO, HCN, and CO+HI. We also explain why the slope of the correlation changes when the orbital time $\tauorb$ is considered instead of the free-fall time, and why estimations of the free-fall time from extragalactic observations skew the correlation, providing a false sublinear correlation. We furthermore show that the apparent nearly linear correlation between the star formation rate and the dynamical equilibrium pressure in the midplane of the galaxies, $\PDE$, is just a consequence of $\PDE$ values being dominated by the variation of the column density of molecular gas. All in all, we argue that the star formation law is driven by the collapse of cold, dense gas, which happens to be primarily molecular in the present Universe, and that the role of stellar feedback is just to shut down the star formation process, not to shape the star formation law., Comment: 17 pages, one figure. We provide a detailed comparison between the ``gravoturbulent'' (GT) and ``global hierarchical collapse'' (GHC) models for molecular clouds and star formation, their respective interpretations of the observational data, the features they share, and suggested tests and observations to discern between them. Also, we clarify common misconceptions in recent literature about the global and hierarchical nature of the GHC scenario, and briefly discuss the evolution of some aspects of both models toward convergence. GT assumes that molecular clouds and their substructures are in approximate virial equilibrium and are in a near-stationary state, interprets the linewidth-derived nonthermal motions exclusively as turbulence, which provides additional pressure against self-gravity. Conversely, GHC assumes that most star-forming molecular clouds and their substructures are part of a continuous gravitationally-driven flow, each accreting from their parent structure. Thus, the clouds and their star formation rate evolve in time. GHC interprets nonthermal motions as a mixture of infall and turbulent components, with the relative importance of the former increasing as the objects become denser and/or more massive. Tests that may provide clues to distinguishing between GT and GHC must take into account that the innermost parts of globally gravitationally bound structures may not locally appear bound, and thus the binding may have to be searched for at the largest scale of the structure., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. Multifactorial experimental designs allow us to assess the contribution of several factors, and potentially their interactions, to one or several responses of interests. Following the principles of the partition of the variance advocated by Sir R.A. Fisher, the experimental responses are factored into the quantitative contribution of main factors and interactions. A popular approach to perform this factorization in both ANOVA and ASCA(+) is through General Linear Models. Subsequently, different inferential approaches can be used to identify whether the contributions are statistically significant or not. Unfortunately, the performance of inferential approaches in terms of Type I and Type II errors can be heavily affected by missing data, outliers and/or the departure from normality of the distribution of the responses, which are commonplace problems in modern analytical experiments. Visual analytics is essential for studying large time series due to its ability to reveal trends, anomalies, and insights. DeepVATS is a tool that merges Deep Learning (Deep) with Visual Analytics (VA) for the analysis of large time series data (TS). It has three interconnected modules. The Deep Learning module, developed in R, manages the load of datasets and Deep Learning models from and to the Storage module. This module also supports models training and the acquisition of the embeddings from the latent space of the trained model. The Storage module operates using the Weights and Biases system. Subsequently, these embeddings can be analyzed in the Visual Analytics module. This module, based on an R Shiny application, allows the adjustment of the parameters related to the projection and clustering of the embeddings space. Once these parameters are set, interactive plots representing both the embeddings, and the time series are shown. This paper introduces the tool and examines its scalability through log analytics. The execution time evolution is examined while the length of the time series is varied. The Three-Body Problem has fascinated scientists for centuries and it has been crucial in the design of modern space missions. Recent developments in Generative Artificial Intelligence hold transformative promise for addressing this longstanding problem. This work investigates the use of Variational Autoencoder (VAE) and its internal representation to generate periodic orbits. We utilize a comprehensive dataset of periodic orbits in the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem (CR3BP) to train deep-learning architectures that capture key orbital characteristics, and we set up physical evaluation metrics for the generated trajectories. Introduction: This article introduces DisTrack, a methodology and a tool developed for tracking and analyzing misinformation within Online Social Networks (OSNs). DisTrack is designed to combat the spread of misinformation through a combination of Natural Language Processing (NLP) Social Network Analysis (SNA) and graph visualization. The primary goal is to detect misinformation, track its propagation, identify its sources, and assess the influence of various actors within the network. Methods: DisTrack's architecture incorporates a variety of methodologies including keyword search, semantic similarity assessments, and graph generation techniques. These methods collectively facilitate the monitoring of misinformation, the categorization of content based on alignment with known false claims, and the visualization of dissemination cascades through detailed graphs. The tool is tailored to capture and analyze the dynamic nature of misinformation spread in digital environments. Results: The effectiveness of DisTrack is demonstrated through three case studies focused on different themes: discredit/hate speech, anti-vaccine misinformation, and false narratives about the Russia-Ukraine conflict. These studies show DisTrack's capabilities in distinguishing posts that propagate falsehoods from those that counteract them, and tracing the evolution of misinformation from its inception. Conclusions: The research confirms that DisTrack is a valuable tool in the field of misinformation analysis. It effectively distinguishes between different types of misinformation and traces their development over time. By providing a comprehensive approach to understanding and combating misinformation in digital spaces, DisTrack proves to be an essential asset for researchers and practitioners working to mitigate the impact of false information in online social environments.

Characterization of the redshift distribution of ensembles of galaxies is pivotal for large scale structure cosmological studies. In this work, we focus on improving the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) methodology for photometric redshift estimation (SOMPZ), specifically in anticipation of the Dark Energy Survey Year 6 (DES Y6) data. This data set, featuring deeper and fainter galaxies than DES Year 3 (DES Y3), demands adapted techniques to ensure accurate recovery of the underlying redshift distribution. We investigate three strategies for enhancing the existing SOM-based approach used in DES Y3: 1) Replacing the Y3 SOM algorithm with one tailored for redshift estimation challenges; 2) Incorporating $\textit{g}$-band flux information to refine redshift estimates (i.e. using $\textit{griz}$ fluxes as opposed to only $\textit{riz}$); 3) Augmenting redshift data for galaxies where available. These methods are applied to DES Y3 data, and results are compared to the Y3 fiducial ones. Our analysis indicates significant improvements with the first two strategies, notably reducing the overlap between redshift bins. By combining strategies 1 and 2, we have successfully managed to reduce redshift bin overlap in DES Y3 by up to 66$\%$. Conversely, the third strategy, involving the addition of redshift data for selected galaxies as an additional feature in the method, yields inferior results and is abandoned. Our findings contribute to the advancement of weak lensing redshift characterization and lay the groundwork for better redshift characterization in DES Year 6 and future stage IV surveys, like the Rubin Observatory.

The relation between magnetic field strength B and gas density n in the interstellar medium is of fundamental importance to many areas of astrophysics, from protostellar disks to galaxy evolution. We present and compare Bayesian analyses of the B - n relation for a comprehensive observational data set, as well as a large body of numerical MHD simulations. We extend the original Zeeman relation of Crutcher et al. (2010) with a large body of magnetic data that includes 700 observations with the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. By using a new multiparameter Bayesian analysis we present a new, more general, time-averaged observational relation: B \propto n^{0.27 \pm 0.017} for n \leq n_0 and B \propto n^{0.54 \pm 0.18} for n \geq n_0, with n_0 = 924^(+145-144) cm^-3. We perform a separate analysis on 19 numerical magnetohydrodynamics simulations that cover a wide range of scales, resolutions, initial conditions, and completed with a variety of codes: arepo, flash, pencil, and ramses. The power law exponents derived from the simulations depend on several physical factors including: dynamo effects, time scales, turbulence, and the initial seed field strength. In particular, early-time simulations where the density, velocity and magnetic fields are unevolved do not match the observational scalings. The simulations that trace the observed density range best, the evolved dwarf galaxy and Milky Way like galaxy simulations, settle into a near consistent exponent of = 0.5 in the dense gas, with variability in the diffuse gas exponent., Comment: 23 figures, 28 pages, submitted to MNRAS, Comments welcome

Combining the predictions of multiple trained models through ensembling is generally a good way to improve accuracy by leveraging the different learned features of the models, however it comes with high computational and storage costs. Model fusion, the act of merging multiple models into one by combining their parameters reduces these costs but doesn't work as well in practice. Indeed, neural network loss landscapes are high-dimensional and non-convex and the minima found through learning are typically separated by high loss barriers. Numerous recent works have been focused on finding permutations matching one network features to the features of a second one, lowering the loss barrier on the linear path between them in parameter space. However, permutations are restrictive since they assume a one-to-one mapping between the different models' neurons exists. We propose a new model merging algorithm, CCA Merge, which is based on Canonical Correlation Analysis and aims to maximize the correlations between linear combinations of the model features. We show that our alignment method leads to better performances than past methods when averaging models trained on the same, or differing data splits. We also extend this analysis into the harder setting where more than 2 models are merged, and we find that CCA Merge works significantly better than past methods. The realm of textiles spans clothing, households, healthcare, sports, and industrial applications. The deformable nature of these objects poses unique challenges that prior work on rigid objects cannot fully address. The increasing interest within the community in textile perception and manipulation has led to new methods that aim to address challenges in modeling, perception, and control, resulting in significant progress. However, this progress is often tailored to one specific textile or a subcategory of these textiles. To understand what restricts these methods and hinders current approaches from generalizing to a broader range of real-world textiles, this review provides an overview of the field, focusing specifically on how and to what extent textile variations are addressed in modeling, perception, benchmarking, and manipulation of textiles.
