INTRODUCTION: Most maternal deaths occur in developing countries, Peru was the second country with the highest maternal mortality rate in South America in 2007, which could be due to gaps in coverage and quality of health services. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the statistical relationship between perinatal care and maternal mortality in the departments of Peru. MATERIAL AND METHOD: transversal bivariate ecological study. Maternal mortality ratio at 2007 and its relation to 6 indicators of perinatal care (first prenatal care during the first trimester of pregnancy, institutional births, among others) were studied using departments as analysis unit. The information was obtained from official sources: Encuesta demográfica y de salud familiar 2007 and Ministerio de Salud. Software Epidat 3.1 was used for the analysis. Odds ratio and chi squared were obtained with a confidence level of 95%. RESULTS: It was only found statistically significant association (p <0.05) between maternal mortality and first prenatal care during the first trimester of pregnancy, institutional births, births attended by skilled staff and postnatal care. It was only possible to calculate Odds ratio for postnatal care indicator, which showed 95.45% of probability of higher maternal mortality rate when there is poor postnatal care coverage. DISCUSSION: In Peru, the low coverage of first prenatal care during the first trimester of pregnancy, institutional births and births attended by qualified personnel are associated to maternal mortality. Postnatal care should be considered with special interest in order to prevent maternal mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the medium-term (3-year) overall survival and success rates, marginal bone loss and different biological parameters displayed with one-piece zirconia implants., Materials and Methods: Electronic searches were conducted of the MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus (Elsevier), Cochrane Library (Wiley) and Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics) databases and manual searching was also performed for relevant articles published up to 14 November 2022. The review included human studies with a minimum of 10 subjects and/or 20 implants and with a follow-up period of at least 3 years after implant placement., Results: Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria and were included for analysis, giving a total of 1,621 one-piece zirconia implants. Eleven studies were included to perform a meta-analysis of survival rates, and six for success rates and marginal bone loss. The survival and success rates at the 3-year follow-up were 94.4% (95% confidence interval 90.4%-98.4%; P < 0.001) and 91.6% (95% confidence interval 84.2%-98.9%; P < 0.001), respectively, and marginal bone loss was 0.231 mm (95% confidence interval 0.190-0.272; P < 0.001)., Conclusions: One-piece zirconia implants appear to be a reliable option for restoring missing teeth, obtaining an implant survival rate of 94.4% and a success rate of 91.6% after a follow-up period of at least 3 years. Moreover, the results showed acceptable rates of marginal bone loss and adequate biological parameters.

Background and Objective: Primary cutaneous lymphomas (PCL) are uncommon. Observations based on the first year of data from the Spanish Registry of Primary Cutaneous Lymphomas (RELCP, in its Spanish abbreviation) of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV) were published in February 2018. This report covers RELCP data for the first 5 years., Patients and Methods: RELCP data were collected prospectively and included diagnosis, treatments, tests, and the current status of patients. We compiled descriptive statistics of the data registered during the first 5 years., Results: Information on 2020 patients treated at 33 Spanish hospitals had been included in the RELCP by December 2021. Fifty-nine percent of the patients were men; the mean age was 62.2 years. The lymphomas were grouped into 4 large diagnostic categories: mycosis fungoides/Sézary syndrome, 1112 patients (55%); primary B-cell cutaneous lymphoma, 547 patients (27.1%); primary CD30+lymphoproliferative disorders, 222 patients (11%), and other T-cell lymphomas, 116 patients (5.8%). Nearly 75% of the tumors were registered in stage I. After treatment, 43.5% achieved complete remission and 27% were stable at the time of writing. Treatments prescribed were topical corticosteroids (1369 [67.8%]), phototherapy (890 patients [44.1%]), surgery (412 patients [20.4%]), and radiotherapy (384 patients [19%])., Conclusion: The characteristics of cutaneous lymphomas in Spain are similar to those reported for other series. The large size of the RELCP registry at 5 years has allowed us to give more precise descriptive statistics than in the first year. Background: Dermoscopic screening facilitates early detection of melanoma and is recommended in patients with multiple or atypical nevi., Objectives: To investigate whether dermoscopic features of acquired melanocytic nevi differ between six body sites (neck, axilla, pectoral area, shoulders, buttocks, legs) and the trunk., Methods and Materials: One hundred six patients with atypical nevi syndrome from a Digital Dermoscopy Unit were evaluated for the presence of nevi in each of seven body sites, and nevi representative of each region were selected as the predominant nevi. Dermoscopic features of 684 melanocytic nevi located in seven different body sites were analyzed., Results: Globular and globular-homogeneous pattern nevi showed a cephalad distribution. Nevi at the neck, axilla, shoulders, and pectoral area showed a higher proportion of globular and globular-homogeneous patterns than other locations (p < .001). Comma vessels were also more frequent on the neck, axillary area, and shoulders (p < .001). A reticular pattern was more frequent on caudal areas (legs, buttocks and lower back, and abdomen; p < .001)., Conclusions: Dermoscopic differences were found in different body areas. Epoxy resins are plastics that are widely used as electrical insulation, in coatings, and as adhesives and paints. They have strong sensitizing power and are one of the main causes of allergic contact eczema, both in the workplace and elsewhere. We present the case of a worker at a plastics/chemical plant, who handled aeronautical components in the process of manufacturing fuselage parts. He consulted his physician because of eczematous lesions on his fingers, hands and forearms which had developed over a two-year period and were clearly related to his work. The standard battery of skin tests was performed, along with the plastics and adhesives series and tests using the products from his workplace. Positivity was shown to epoxy resins (standard battery) and to the products from his workplace, which included different fiberglass and carbon fiber sheets impregnated with epoxy resins and epoxy adhesives.

Skin involvement in acute forms of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is in the form of erythematous papules, although rare forms of xanthomatous lesions have been described. We present the case of a boy with acute disseminated LCH who, at the age of 16 months, began to experience outbreaks of seborrheic dermatitis-like skin lesions and progressive hepatic dysfunction. The symptoms were complicated by partial central diabetes insipidus and specific pulmonary infiltration by Langerhans cells, which led to fibrosis. During the course of the disease, the patient developed liver cirrhosis, alterations in the lipid profile and disseminated xanthomatous skin lesions, concomitant with the lesions specific to the LCH. Despite successive cycles of chemotherapy, the outcome was the death of the patient after five years, due to his liver disease. Xanthomatous lesions in LCH are typical of the late stages of chronic progressive forms, such as Hand-Schüller-Christian disease. When they appear in acute disseminated forms, there is some controversy over whether they correspond to a progression of the disease towards more chronic forms, or whether they are associated independent lesions, such as in this case.

There are dermatological symptoms in up to 25% of patients with sarcoidosis, and the appearance of specific subcutaneous nodules as a manifestation of this entity is rare. They may even predate other manifestations of sarcoidosis. We present the case of a 38-year-old woman with asymptomatic subcutaneous nodules in the limbs, which corresponded to deep sarcoid granulomas in the histological study. She did not present with any extracutaneous indications. The imaging tests performed revealed right paratracheal adenopathies. This led to the diagnosis of sarcoidosis, in both its subcutaneous and pulmonary forms (stage I). Subcutaneous sarcoidosis is probably an underdiagnosed entity, as fewer than 40 cases are reflected in literature. Its value lies in the fact that it may be the first manifestation of extracutaneous or systemic sarcoidosis, which means that this form of sarcoidosis must be considered in the differential diagnosis of subcutaneous nodular lesions; close follow-up of these patients is also necessary.
