Special issue Hydrozoans.-- 21 pages, 18 figures, 3 tables, Modern in situ survey technologies such as crewed submersibles, remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs), towed camera arrays, and visual/video plankton recorders (VPRs) were used to characterize the dominant anthomedusan species off the eastern seaboard of Japan. Notes on the taxonomy, distribution, behaviour and interspecies interactions are presented for the four observed species: Euphysa japonica, E. flammea, Calycopsis nematophora and Pandea rubra. A new generic definition for the genus Calycopsis is proposed. The possibility of run-on, cascading detrimental effects of oceanic acidification on midwater ecosystems was identified from observations made during the present study. © 2008 Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, VPR data were funded from the Agriculture, Forests and Fisheries Research Council (FY2002-2006). Summary A collection of medusae from between Western Australia and Java has been examined; owing to poor preservation, many specimens were unidentifiable and many more were identifiable only with difficulty, but at least 20 species appear to be present. These are almost all what one would expect to find in this area by analogy with published lists of medusae from neighbouring areas, but one species new to science was found, Euphysora russelli sp. nov. and two other species (Euphysilla pyramidata and Rhysomedusa pomponina) in places a long way from where they had been found previously. E. pyramidata exhibited manubrial budding, which has not so far been recorded in any medusa belonging to the family Tubalariidae. Specimens of the medusa Calycopsis sp. and of the pelagic hydroid Clytia sp. (the latter epizoic on pteropods), both from the Bass Strait, are compared with similar material in the above collection.

This short faunistic note contains a report on the species of Scyphozoa, Hydromedusae, Siphonophora and Ctenophora that were collected by OWS “Cirrus” and “Cumulus”, R.V. “Tridens” and HMS “Snellius” in the North Atlantic Ocean between 22° N and 66° N. In all, 61 species have been captured. New records for Calycopsis typa Fewkes, 1882, Cunina duplicata Maas, 1893, Sibogita geometrica Maas, 1905 ssp. occidentalis Kramp, 1959, Apolemia uvaria (Lesueur, 1811), Thalassophyes crystallina Moser, 1925 and Crystallophyes amygdalina Moser, 1925, are given.
