Studies in Europe and North America have shown that the mental health of individuals experiencing homelessness (IEHs) is worse than that of the general population. The objective of this study was to analyze the mental health of IEHs in Spain. A retrospective cohort study (observational study) of the health of 3,854 IEHs was conducted, according to age and gender, using diagnoses registered in the health service, over the 15 years between 2006 and 2020. Of this population, 31.6% were diagnosed with some sort of substance use disorder (SUD), mainly alcohol-related (18.1%), 20.1% had a mental disorder not related to drugs, and 11.5% had a dual disorder. Younger people had more mental health problems. This study—the first large study of IEHs in Spain—highlights significant differences in mental health and addictions according to gender and age. In general, Spanish IEHs have better mental health for all of the analyzed diagnostics than other populations internationally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIAL status ,COUNTRIES - Abstract
The current research aimed to study the strategies that people employ in order to become more desirable as mates in different cultural settings. More specifically, using a closed-ended questionnaire on a sample of 7181 participants from 14 different countries, we identified 10 different strategies that people employ to become more appealing as mates. Participants indicated that they had more frequently used the "Enhance looks," followed by the "Show off abilities and talents," and the "Demonstrate similarity" strategies. On the other hand, they had less frequently used the "Keep undesirable things hidden," the "Show off and exaggerate wealth and abilities," and the "Drastic appearance changes" strategies. Female participants indicated that they had more extensive used the "Enhance looks" strategy than male participants, while male participants indicated that they had more extensive used the "Increase income and social status" and the "Show off and exaggerate wealth and abilities" strategies than female participants. The sex effects, as well as the extent of use, were generally consistent across the different cultures. The identified strategies were classified further into two main strategies, namely the "Develop and demonstrate desirable traits" and the "Deceive about undesirable traits," which was generally consistent across the different countries. HOMELESSNESS ,HOMELESS persons ,COHORT analysis ,CHRONIC obstructive pulmonary disease ,OLDER people ,CIRRHOSIS of the liver - Abstract
People experiencing homelessness (IEHs) and housing exclusion have more chronic diagnoses and lower life expectancy than the general population. There are no studies of large samples of IEHs in Spain, especially studies that analyze health records and diagnoses. The objective of this study was to analyze the health of IEHs in Spain. We conducted an observational retrospective cohort study of the health of 3,854 IEHs, according to age and gender, using diagnoses registered in the health service, over the 15 years between 2006 and 2020. The results obtained indicated that 40% of the IEHs studied suffered from a physical disorder. Between 4.1% and 13.2% had some type of infection, and between 4.0% and 13.8% a chronic pathology. Of the total population, 13.2% died during the period of analysis. The main causes of death were suicide, cirrhosis of the liver, overdose, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease flare-up, cardiopathy, AIDS, cancer, and meningitis. Older people had more health problems. Women were in poorer health and had a higher mortality rate than men. These results, the first ones from a large sample of IEHs in Spain, highlight health problems of IEHs, especially women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Although the use of recreational drugs and pharmacological treatments have a strong impact on the sexuality of individuals with substance use disorders, sexuality is not usually included in the work plans of specialized residential services. Goals: The goals of this study were to analyze the users' sexual health in the context of residential care, as well as connecting the contents of the regulations regarding sexuality with the users' and professionals' sexual opinion. Results: The main results indicate that sexuality is not worked on in most centers. On the other hand, users presented a high level of sexual dysfunction. Finally, their sexual opinion was generally positive. Conclusion: In conclusion, despite the high level of sexual dysfunction among users, sexuality is not worked on in drug dependence residential centers; the sexual opinion of the people involved doesn't create an impediment. Smartphone use by young Spanish students has been broadly explored, specifically among university, high school, and primary school students. The goal of this article is to analyze smartphone use, its gender differences, and its relationship with Internet gaming disorder and Internet gambling disorder in vocational education and training (VET) students. A retrospective ex post facto study was carried out in which habitual uses of the mobile phone, experiences related to it, Internet gaming disorder, and online pathological gambling were evaluated. The sample consisted of 1,107 VET students (55.1% male) with a mean age of 18.8 years. Problematic smartphone use was observed in 7.9% of the sample and 28.6% used it with occasional problems. Gender differences were obtained, with a higher presence of problematic use among females. According to the regression analysis, the variables that best differentiated participants who presented problematic smartphone use were using it in class, being female, and being a user of movies and videogames. Between videogames and gambling users, the variable that best differentiated participants who presented problematic smartphone use was videogame use. Although the prevalence of frequent problems with smartphone use is relatively low, the percentage of students at risk must not be disregarded by the educational community. It is recommended to promote the appropriate use of technologies in VET students.

Retention is the best predictor of therapeutic success in community-based substance abuse treatment. Those that finalize the treatment having therapeutic discharge (TD) have best results after the treatment than those who don't get the TD. The objective of this study was analysed variables related with TD (or another drop-off reasons) in two professionalized therapeutic communities (TC) in Catalonia (Spain). The sample included people who started treatment in the TC between March 2018 and March 2020. Median and variances comparison and contingence tables were performed. A logistic regression was adjusted to determine variables with capacity to predict TD. 223 patients were included and the 32,8% had TD. Patients with exclusively alcohol-dependence diagnose had more TD than patients with diagnoses of cocaine-dependence and heroin-dependence. Those who had previous experiences of treatment were riskier of drop-off. Patients who referred worst health status and quality of live, more anxiety, worst mood situation, more punctuation in the STAI test, more punctuation in the Beck depression inventor or more impulsivity, had less TD. In conclusion some variables with capacity to predict high probability of TD in community-based substance abuse treatment were identified. The time spent under treatment, perception of quality of live and the diagnose of alcohol-dependence exclusively were independent variables that predict better the TD La retención en el tratamiento residencial de drogodependencias es el mejor predictor del éxito terapéutico. Introduction: The impact of the sick-leaves for COVID-19 has required the adaptation of the health services, specially of those that are residential because it need continuous presence of professionals. There is not exist studies about sick leaves in centres for drug-dependence treatment. Objectives: To analyse sick leave episodes of practitioners of different services specialised in drug-dependence treatment and to compare their differences between years 2019 and 2020. The Chi square test was used to contrast hypotheses. Method: 37 centers managed for 17 institutions proportioned a list of sick leaves. General data (as the different typology of sick leaves) were compared. Results: 587 sick leaves were registered (221 in the year 2019 and 366 in the year 2020). The 46.7% of the sick leaves of the year 2020 were related with COVID-19. Sick leaves related with physical health were reduced a 10.5% (X²=1.85; df=1; p<.001), sick leaves related with mental or emotional health were reduced a 72.7% (X²=10.23; df=1; p=.001) and the sick leaves related with family organization responsibilities increased a 27.3%, though there weren't statistic differences in this case (X²=0.449; df=1; p=0.503). Conclusion: The pandemic increases the sick-leaves related with COVID-19 or with preventive confinement. In the other hand the pandemic reduces the number of sick-leaves related with other health problems and mental health or emotional issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Homelessness, which is a severe social problem across Europe and on the rise over the past decade, is closely linked to organic and mental health problems. In front of the lack of diagnostic analysis studies in the Spanish territory, this research aimed to determine the sociodemographic characteristics of a sample of individuals experiencing homelessness (IEH), to determine the prevalence of diagnoses of substance use disorders, dual pathology and other mental disorders and to analyze the existence of diagnostic differences between IEH born in the country and immigrant IEH. Methods: A transversal and observational study was carried out, based on the analysis of mental health diagnostics of the medical histories of a sample of 1,072 IEH (453 locals and 619 immigrants) assisted between 2008 and 2017 in mental health services in Girona, northeastern Spain. For the statistical analysis, Student’s t test was used to compare means and the chi-squared test was used for the analysis of qualitative variables. A binary logistic regression analysis was carried out to establish the predictor variables for the diagnosis of drug addiction and dual pathology. Results: IEH showed high rates of mental disorders, especially psychoactive substances (82.6% of diagnosed people). 43.9% of IEH showed alcohol dependence as the reason for their diagnosis, followed by cocaine addiction and opiates. Foreign born IEH had more diagnoses for alcohol dependence and less for opiates or dual pathology than spanish born IEH. IEH born in Spain showed a higher vulnerability and received more mental health diagnoses than immigrant IEH. Conclusions: Even though immigrant PESS show more diagnoses for alcohol dependence, PESS born in Spain show a higher vulnerability and receive more mental health diagnoses than immigrant PESS. The process of mi- grating seems to establish a difference in the kind of mental disorders and addictions the PESS collective is prone to Fundamentos: El sinhogarismo, grave problema social en toda Europa y en aumento durante la última década, está estrechamente vinculado a problemas orgánicos y de salud mental.

Individuals experiencing homelessness-an extreme form of social exclusion-have considerably higher risk of being victims of violence than the general population. We analyze the episodes of violence suffered by 504 individuals experiencing homelessness in Spain, as well as the differences between men and women. The results indicate high levels of violence and suggest that gender (specifically, being a woman) is the primary factor driving exposure to violence among this group. Highlighting the reality of women experiencing homelessness can help social, mental health, and addiction services adjust responses to better address the needs of this group and offer comprehensive care. Background: Current evidence suggests that mortality is considerably higher in individuals experiencing homelessness. The aim of this study was to analyze the mortality rate and the mortality risk factors in a sample of individuals experiencing homelessness in the city of Girona over a ten-year period. (2) Methods: We retrospectively examined the outcomes of 475 people experiencing homelessness with the available clinical and social data. Our sample was comprised of 84.4% men and 51.8% foreign-born people. Cox's proportional hazard models were used to identify mortality risk factors between origin groups. (3) Results: 60 people died during the ten-year period. The average age of death was 49.1 years. After adjusting for demographic characteristics and the duration of homelessness, the risk factors for mortality were origin (people born in Spain) (HR = 4.34; 95% CI = 1.89-10.0), type 2 diabetes (HR = 2.9; 95% CI = 1.62-5.30), alcohol use disorder (HR = 1.9; 95% CI = 1.12-3.29), and infectious diseases (HR = 1.6; 95% CI = 1.09-2.39). Our results show a high prevalence of infectious and chronic diseases. Type 2 diabetes emerges as an important risk factor in homelessness. The average age of death of individuals experiencing homelessness was significantly lower than the average age of death in the general population (which is greater than 80 years) (4). Conclusions: Foreign-born homeless people were generally younger and healthier than Spanish-born homeless people. Chronic diseases were controlled better in Spanish-born people, but this group showed an increased risk of mortality. DDEUIT

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of COVID-19 cases among persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) in the city of Girona (Catalonia, Spain) and to analyze the variables that influenced their infection during the first wave of the 2020 pandemic. Method: Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests were carried out and the sociodemographic variables, the presence of severe mental disorder and substance use disorder, and the type of facility where they were housed during confinement (specific shelter, macro-facility, outdoors) of 233 PEH from the city of Girona were recorded. Results: Of the 233 PEH, 23.6% (n = 55) were housed in the shelter, 29.6% (n = 69) in the pavilion and 56.8% (n = 109) outdoors. Sixty-seven PCR tests were performed of which 91.2% were negative. Of the six positive cases, one was from the shelter (Χ² = 11.9; gl=1; p<0.001). Predictor variables for risk of infection were: type of facility where they were housed during confinement, being older, having immigrated, and being diagnosed with a substance use disorder. Conclusions: Persons experiencing homelessness are more vulnerable to COVID-19 infection than the general population. Age (being younger), having undergone a migration process, having a substance use disorder, and not having been able to stay in the shelter were predictors of COVID-19 infection. In this study it was analysed the perception of different professionals working with persons experiencing homeless, specifically about the situation of homelessness institutions during the first weeks of the state of alarm as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. The method employed was a qualitative analysis of thematic content. An ad hoc online questionary was designed including open questions about the perception of professionals about the management of the COVID-19 crisis in the services addressed to homeless people. A sample of 202 participants of almost all the autonomic communities of Spain was recruited (professionals of social education, social work, social integration and psychology). Main conclusions indicated that homelessness services had a lot of difficulties to adapt their circumstances to the confinement requirements. These circumstances influenced in the mental health of the professionals specially. Persons experiencing homelessness with mental health or addictions problems were persons that suffered more difficulties (highlighting situations of sheltering in temporary macro institutions as pavilions). Residential resources that limited the access of people and confine them, had less difficulties to manage the situation.

This study aims to analyse the use of an instant messaging app (WhatsApp®) as a means of communication for reaching people who inject drugs. An eight-week prospective longitudinal and observational study with three observations was designed for five addiction centres in Catalonia. The participants were 105 people who inject drugs, distributed in five intervention groups. The results of the Risk Assessment Battery (RAB) were compared in the three levels of analysis pre-test, post intervention and one month after the intervention. The main results indicate a significative reduction in RAB scores after the intervention. The main conclusion was that the WhatsApp® intervention has great potential for developing harm reduction interventions and to reduce the HIV contagion risk El presente estudio analiza el uso de una aplicación de mensajería instantánea (WhatsApp®) como canal de acceso a personas que se inyectan drogas.

Youth with social disabilities -- Mental health ,Joves desfavorits -- Salut mental - Abstract
Hundreds of minors born in the Maghreb come to Spain every year in search of a better future. The reality of these young people after taking the decision to migrate to a country that might fulfil these hopes often entails a descent into ex-clusion, a trajectory of personal suffering in all areas (social, psychological, physical, spiritual and cultural). This article discusses several re-levant topics for describing the elements that constitute risk factors for mental health pro-blems: from the unrecognised risk to life of the journey to our country to contact with a system of protection that will leave many of these boys on the street. Once they are in a situation of ho-melessness, pre- and post-stressors accumulate in each young person and generate a situation of such stress that there is a high risk of damage to their mental health, with consequences that they may have to live with for the rest of their lives Centenares de jóvenes menores de edad nacidos en el Magreb llegan cada año a España en busca de un futuro mejor.
