Lagoviruses belong to the Caliciviridae family. They were first recognized as highly pathogenic viruses of the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and European brown hare (Lepus europaeus) that emerged in the 1970–1980s, namely, rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) and European brown hare syndrome virus (EBHSV), according to the host species from which they had been first detected. However, the diversity of lagoviruses has recently expanded to include new related viruses with varying pathogenicity, geographic distribution and host ranges. Together with the frequent recombination observed amongst circulating viruses, there is a clear need to establish precise guidelines for classifying and naming lagovirus strains. Therefore, here we propose a new nomenclature based on phylogenetic relationships. In this new nomenclature, a single species of lagovirus would be recognized and called Lagovirus europaeus. The species would be divided into two genogroups that correspond to RHDV- and EBHSV-related viruses, respectively. Genogroups could be subdivided into genotypes, which could themselves be subdivided into phylogenetically well-supported variants. Based on available sequences, pairwise distance cutoffs have been defined, but with the accumulation of new sequences these cutoffs may need to be revised. Anthelmintic resistance (AR) in ovine gastrointestinal nematodes (GlN) to benzimidazole (BZs) is associated with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the isotype 1 of B-tubulin, at codon 200 principally, but also at codons 167 and 198. ln this study we compared the levels of AR of GIN field strains by the Egg Hatch Assay (EHA) and the percentage of BZ resistance alleles obtained after pyrosequencing. Throughout the years 2012 and 2013, variation in resistance was checked by EHA in two sheep flocks (A and B). Resistance was measured by the proportion of eggs hatched at discriminating dose of 0.1 g/ml thiabendazole. DNA extraction was carríed out from a pool of larvae and eggs from faecal samples. Prior to pyrosequencing, the fragments including the SNPs198/200 were amplified for Trichostrongylus spp, Ieladorsagra circumcincta and Haemonchus conbrtus, independently for each species; a fragment for the SNP167 in T. circumcrncfa was also amplified. Flock A had a high level of hatching throughout the study, with a mean of 77.74o/o (57.21-90.64%);in flock B, the resistance level increased over time, with values of 33.25o/o in 2012 (15.81-57.460/o) and 52.02% in 2013 (46.06-55.19%). Pyrosequencing analysis detected the presence of the BZ resistance allele at codon 200 in Trichostrongylus spp in both flocks; the percentage of the resistant allele was B1.28Yo (19.53- IAAYo) in flock A and 21.37Yo (1 .57 -51 .48o/o) in B. However, for codon 198, the resistant allele in this species was at a low level in both flocks, 2.74o/o in A and 5.A4o/o in B, respectively. ln L circumcincta, the resistant allele incorporating SNP200 was not present in any flock, with a mean of 0.32%; these low levels were very similar at codons 198 and 167, with values of 0.87 and 1.61%, respectively. ln H. contorfus, pyrosequencing was only carried out in flock B, where this species was detected after morphological identification; the proportion of the BZ resistance allele was 6.330/o (0-22.77yo) at

Sarcoptic mange was recently described in the wild European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in north-eastern Mediterranean Spain, the first such infection reported in this species anywhere in the world. This finding has created concern in conservationists and game managers given that an outbreak of mange after a translocation would have catastrophic consequences for naïve rabbit populations in other parts of Spain. A retrospective serosurvey using an 'in house' ELISA test based on the use of a recombinant antigen aimed at determining the rates of contact with Sarcoptes scabiei was carried out on sera from 966 rabbits collected between 1993 and 2010 in Spain. Antibodies were found in 13% of wild rabbits in 60% of the 53 areas surveyed, as well as in 16 of the 17 Spanish provinces and islands studied. Seropositive rabbits were found amongst the oldest samples analyzed and in all studied years. Antibodies were also detected in 36% of rabbits from the protected island of Dragonera, where rabbits have probably not been released since the 1970s. On Mallorca, where 89 rabbits were inspected for both lesions and antibodies, the prevalence of lesions (5.6%) was much lower than the seroprevalence (22.5%), indicating that rabbits often survive infection or that ELISA detects infected rabbits before they develop visible lesions. Seroprevalence was higher in areas with medium levels of rabbit abundance, no restocking and high rainfall. The results show that mange is widespread in rabbits and that the mite is not a recent introduction. Thus, sarcoptic mange could be considered as an enzootic disease in the wild rabbit and so prophylactic measures implemented during rabbit translocations are to be encouraged to avoid local outbreaks in naïve populations.

Data-driven models for the prediction of bluetongue vector distributions are valuable tools for the identification of areas at risk for bluetongue outbreaks. Various models have been developed during the last decade, and the majority of them use linear discriminant analysis or logistic regression to infer vector–environment relationships. This study presents a performance assessment of two established models compared to a distribution model based on a promising ensemble learning technique called Random Forests. Additionally, the impact of false absences, i.e. data records of suitable vector habitat that are, for various reasons, incorrectly labelled as absent, on the model outcome was assessed using alternative calibration–validation schemes. Three reduction methods were applied to reduce the number of false absences in the calibration data, without loss of information on the environmental gradient of suitable vector habitat: random reduction and stratified reduction based on the distance between absence and presence records in geographical (Euclidean distance) or environmental space (Mahalanobis distance). The results indicated that the predicted vector distribution by the Random Forest model was significantly more accurate than the vector distributions predicted by the two established models (McNemar test, p < 0.01) when the calibration data were not reduced with respect to false absences. The performance of the established models, however, increased considerably by application of stratified false absence reductions. Model validation revealed no significant difference between the performance of the three distinct Culicoides imicola distribution models for the majority of alternative stratified reduction schemes. El cambio climático se ha convertido, por derecho propio, en la gran cuestión ambiental del siglo XXI. La distribución y frecuencia de muchas enfermedades parasitarias (tanto desde el punto de vista estacional como geográfico) está directamente relacionada con la temperatura y la humedad relativa, ya que éstas son en última instancia las que determinan el desarrollo y la supervivencia en el medio exterior de las especies parásitas. Como quiera que éstas se adaptan mejor y más rápidamente que sus hospedadores a las condiciones climáticas cambiantes, son previsibles alteraciones notables de la epizootiología que exigirán revisar los métodos de control actualmente establecidos.

Serum samples from 1034 non-carnivorous wildlife from Spain were tested for antibodies to Neospora caninum by competitive screening enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and confirmed by an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). High agreement was observed between results in both techniques (kappa value higher than 0.9). Prevalences of N. caninum antibodies positive by both techniques were 11.8% of 237 red deer (Cervus elaphus), 7.7% of 13 barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia), 6.1% of 33 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and 0.3% of 298 wild boar (Sus scrofa). In one of 53 hares (Lepus granatensis), antibodies were found in the ELISA but could not be confirmed by IFAT due to lack of sample. Antibodies to N. caninum were not found in any of 251 wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), 79 fallow deer (Dama dama), 27 mouflon (Ovis ammon), 40 chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica) and three Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica). Statistically significant differences were observed between N. caninum seroprevalence in red deer and management of hunting estates (open versus fenced) with higher prevalence in fenced estates, and among sampling sites. Seroprevalence was particularly high in some areas (MO estate in South-Central Spain or some estates of Catalonia, North-East Spain), while no contact with N. caninum was observed in others. Results indicate that in certain areas of Spain, N. caninum is present in wildlife, especially in red deer. These results have important implications in both sylvatic cycles and may influence the prevalence of infection in cattle farms in those areas. To our knowledge, this is the first report of antibodies to N. caninum in wildlife from Spain and the first report of N. caninum antibodies in barbary sheep and wild boar.

The European wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is the main prey for several endangered species and an important game species in the Iberian Peninsula. However, over the last several decades 2 diseases, myxomatosis and rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD), have contributed to a decline in rabbit populations. In Spain, vaccination campaigns against both diseases and the translocation of vaccinated rabbits are frequently used in projects aimed at stimulating the recovery of wild populations. We estimated which factors related to body condition were associated with successful immunization by vaccination. In 191 adult wild rabbits, we calculated a body-mass index and analyzed a number of biochemical parameters and antibody concentrations before and after vaccination. Results showed that, respectively, 81 and 84% of initially seronegative rabbits seroconverted after vaccination against myxomatosis and RHD. We also found that RHD antibody concentrations after vaccination were positively associated with total protein concentrations at the moment of vaccination in all rabbits, whereas RHD antibody concentrations were negatively related to the creatinine concentration at the end of our study for initially seronegative rabbits. Our results suggested that In wild rabbits vaccination was an effective way of increasing antibody concentrations and, thus, of fighting myxomatosis and RHD, although the intensity of the immune response was conditioned by the body condition of individual rabbits. Consequently, rabbit translocations could be improved by avoiding the translocation of individuals with poor body condition and by improving vaccination protocols. In addition, success rates in mass vaccination programs carried out in free-living wild populations may be increased if the body condition of individuals is evaluated before vaccination campaigns are carried out.

Several predator species at risk of extinction in Southwestern Europe are dependent on the population density of European wild rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus. Rabbit populations in the region, however, have recently undergone dramatic decreases in population density, which may be exacerbated by hunting. Current hunting policies set the autumn-winter season, just before the start of rabbit reproduction, as the main hunting season, and previous theoretical models have estimated that the current hunting season may have the greatest negative impact on rabbit abundance and should be changed. We utilised a model for rabbit population dynamics to determine the effects of the timing of hunting during two seasons, summer and autumn, on the tendency of rabbit populations to be over-harvested and on the number of rabbits hunted. This model included field estimates of age- and sex-selection biases of hunting by shotgun. Scenarios with different hunting rates and sex- and age-selection probabilities of hunting were simulated for populations with different turnover levels and with and without compensatory mortality mechanisms. Field estimations showed that hunting in summer was juvenile-biased whereas autumn hunting was juvenile- and male-biased. In contrast to previous findings, our modelling results suggested that hunting in autumn may be the most conservative option for harvesting of rabbit populations, since these populations were more prone to be over-harvested during the summer. The differences between the two seasons in number of rabbits hunted were dependent on population dynamics and hunting sex- and age-selection probabilities. Our findings suggest that altering of current hunting policies would not optimise the exploitation or conservation of wild rabbit populations, but that the latter may be improved by some changes in the timing of hunting.

The effects of vaccination against myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD) on long-term mortality rates in European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were studied from 1993 to 1996 by radiotracking a free-living population of wild rabbits. During the three months after immunisation, unvaccinated young rabbits weighing between 180 and 600 g were 13.6 times more likely to die than vaccinated young rabbits. In adult rabbits, vaccination did not significantly decrease mortality, mainly owing to the high proportion of rabbits which had previously been exposed to the antigens of both diseases. Compared with adult rabbits with natural antibodies to VHD, rabbits without these antibodies were 5.2 times more likely to die of VHD during annual outbreaks.

The capture and handling of live European wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) are unavoidable initial steps for immunization by vaccination against viral hemorrhagic disease (VHD) and myxomatosis as a management tool aimed at enhancing wild rabbit populations. We investigated the short-term effects of vaccination campaigns against VHD and myxomatosis on the survival of 206 European wild rabbits in a Spanish population. While no effect was observed on the survival of adult rabbits, young and subadult rabbits (P < 0.001) had higher mortality rates during the first week after handling than in the subsequent 3 weeks. The hazard rate of death from disease was inversely correlated with body condition (P < 0.001) during the first week. Vaccination increased the hazard rate of death due to disease during the first 7 days post-handling, although this detrimental effect was higher in young rabbits (P = 0.012) and modulated by body condition (P = 0.004). The hazard rate of dying from predation during the first week was higher for males than females (P = 0.023) and in subadults compared to young rabbits (P = 0.004). Body condition was inversely related to the predation hazard rate (P = 0.002). Our results suggest that vaccination campaigns had a short-term negative impact caused by the stress of handling in addition to the detrimental effects of vaccination against VHD and myxomatosis. Future studies should consider this negative impact to assess the true efficacy of vaccination campaigns in wild populations.

Parasite community ecology has recently focused on understanding the forces structuring these communities. There are few surveys, however, designed to study the spatial repeatability and predictability of parasite communities at the local scale in one host. The purpose of our study was to address the relationship between infracommunity and component community richness, and to describe spatial variations on the local scale, of helminth parasite communities in an avian host, the red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa). We sampled 235 wild partridges from 8 separate localities, with different partridge population densities, in the Ciudad Real and Toledo provinces of central Spain, and we determined their overall and intestinal helminth species. We found that habitat variables (mean temperature and land use) were not significantly associated with any component community. The partridge population abundance index was directly correlated with the prevalence and mean intensity of infection but not with component community species richness. There was a curvilinear relationship between infracommunity and component community species richness, as well as negative interspecific associations, for the helminth species assemblage parasitizing the intestine. A nestedness/anti-nestedness pattern, considered as part of a continuum, was associated with prevalence, mean intensity and partridge population abundance index, but not with component community richness. Increases in the partridge population abundance index and the prevalence and mean intensity of infection were associated with increases in helminth community nestedness. Although negative interactions between helminth species could not be ruled out as forces structuring helminth communities, our results suggest that parasite community structure in the red-legged partridge was primarily determined by the extrinsic influence of parasite habitat heterogeneity and its amplification of the differing probabilities of colonization of pa

Sera from 456 wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) collected between 1992 and 2003 from five geographical regions of Spain were examined for antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii by the modified agglutination test. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 65 (14.2%) wild rabbits. Prevalence of infection was significantly higher in samples collected from wild rabbits from Catalonia, northeast Spain (53.8%), where rabbits lived in forest, compared to other areas (Huelva and Cádiz, Andalucı́a, south Spain; Toledo, Castilla-La Mancha, central Spain; and Zaragoza, Aragón, northeast Spain) with more dry conditions, where prevalence ranged from 6.1 to 14.6%. No differences were observed on prevalence and age (young animals <7 months of age compared to older animals), sex, date of samples collection or season of samples collection. The results indicate that prevalence of T. gondii in some areas of Spain is high, and this finding could have environmental and/or public health implications if wild rabbits are to be used as a source of food.
