A system was recently implemented in the Virgo detector to cancel noise in its data produced by seismic waves directly coupling with the suspended test masses through gravitational interaction. The data from seismometers are being filtered to produce a coherent estimate of the associated gravitational noise also known as Newtonian noise. The first implementation of the system uses a time-invariant (static) Wiener filter, which is the optimal filter for Newtonian-noise cancellation assuming that the noise is stationary. However, time variations in the form of transients and slow changes in correlations between sensors are possible and while time-variant filters are expected to cope with these variations better than a static Wiener filter, the question is what the limitations are of time-variant noise cancellation. In this study, we present a framework to study the performance limitations of time-variant noise cancellation filters and carry out a proof-of-concept with adaptive filters on seismic data at the Virgo site. We demonstrate that the adaptive filters, at least those with superior architecture, indeed significantly outperform the static Wiener filter with the residual noise remaining above the statistical error bound.

Terrestrial gravity perturbations caused by seismic fields produce the so-called Newtonian noise in gravitational-wave detectors, which is predicted to limit their sensitivity in the upcoming observing runs. In the past, this noise was seen as an infrastructural limitation, i.e., something that cannot be overcome without major investments to improve a detector's infrastructure. However, it is possible to have at least an indirect estimate of this noise by using the data from a large number of seismometers deployed around a detector's suspended test masses. The noise estimate can be subtracted from the gravitational-wave data; a process called Newtonian-noise cancellation (NNC). In this article, we present the design and implementation of the first NNC system at the Virgo detector as part of its AdV+ upgrade. It uses data from 110 vertical geophones deployed inside the Virgo buildings in optimized array configurations. We use a separate tiltmeter channel to test the pipeline in a proof-of-principle. The system has been running with good performance over months.

We provide a novel methodological approach to the estimate of the change of the Quantum Vacuum electromagnetic energy density in a High critical Temperature superconducting metal bulk sample, when it undergoes the transition in temperature, from the superconducting to the normal phase. The various contributions to the Casimir energy in the two phases are highlighted and compared. While the TM polarization of the vacuum mode allows for a macroscopic description of the superconducting transition, the changes in the TE vacuum mode induced by the superconductive correlations are introduced within a microscopic model, which does not explicitly take into account the anisotropic structure of the material., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, to be published in Phys.Rev. The Einstein Telescope (ET) is a proposed third-generation gravitational-wave (GW) underground observatory. It will have greatly increased sensitivity compared to current GW detectors, and it is designed to extend the observation band down to a few Hz. At these frequencies, a major limitation of the ET sensitivity is predicted to be due to gravitational fluctuations produced by the environment, most importantly by the seismic field, which give rise to the so-called Newtonian noise (NN). Accurate models of ET NN are crucial to assess the compatibility of an ET candidate site with the ET sensitivity target also considering a possible reduction of NN by noise cancellation. With NN models becoming increasingly complex as they include details of geology and topography, it is crucial to have tools to make robust assessments of their accuracy. For this purpose, we derive a lower bound on seismic NN spectra, which is weakly dependent on geology and properties of the seismic field. As a first application, we use the lower limit to compare it with NN estimates recently calculated for the Sardinia and Euregio Meuse-Rhine (EMR) candidate sites. We find the utility of the method, which shows an inconsistency with the predictions for the EMR site, which indicates that ET NN models require further improvement., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Fluctuations of gravitational forces cause so-called Newtonian noise (NN) in gravitational-wave (GW) detectors which is expected to limit their low-frequency sensitivity in upcoming observing runs. Seismic NN is produced by seismic waves passing near a detector's suspended test masses. It is predicted to be the strongest contribution to NN. Modeling this contribution accurately is a major challenge. Arrays of seismometers were deployed at the Virgo site to characterize the seismic field near the four test masses. In this paper, we present results of a spectral analysis of the array data from one of Virgo's end buildings to identify dominant modes of the seismic field. Some of the modes can be associated with known seismic sources. Analyzing the modes over a range of frequencies, we provide a dispersion curve of Rayleigh waves. We find that the Rayleigh speed in the NN frequency band 10 Hz - 20 Hz is very low ($\lesssim$100\,m/s), which has important consequences for Virgo's seismic NN. Using the new speed estimate, we find that the recess formed under the suspended test masses by a basement level at the end buildings leads to a 10 fold reduction of seismic NN., Comment: This draft has been approved through LIGO and VIRGO review process

Archimedes is an INFN-funded pathfinder experiment aimed at verifying the feasibility of measuring the interaction of vacuum fluctuations with gravity. The force exerted by the gravitational field on a Casimir cavity in terms of Archimedes force of vacuum is discussed, the force that can be tested against observation is identified, and it is shown that the present technology makes it possible to perform the first experimental tests. The use of suitable high-Tc superconductors as modulators of Archimedes force is motivated. The possibility is analyzed of using gravitational wave interferometers as detectors of the force, transported through an optical spring from the Archimedes vacuum force apparatus to the gravitational interferometer test masses to maintain the two systems well separated. The ALADIN experiment aims at observing how the critical magnetic field of a superconducting Aluminum film is modified, when it constitutes one of the reflecting surfaces of a Casimir cavity. If successful, such an observation would reveal the influence of vacuum energy on the superconducting phase transition. In this paper a rigorous analysis of experimental data is reported, the results are discussed and compared with theoretical predictions based on Lifshitz theory of dispersion forces, and the BCS formula for the optical conductivity of superconductors. The main novelty with respect to a previous data analysis by some of the authors, is the use of a cross-correlation method which is more rigorous and leads to better estimates., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

We review and assess a part of the recent work on Casimir apparatuses in the weak gravitational field of the Earth. For a free, real massless scalar field subject to Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions on the parallel plates, the resulting regularized and renormalized energy-momentum tensor is covariantly conserved, while the trace anomaly vanishes if the massless field is conformally coupled to gravity. Conformal coupling also ensures a finite Casimir energy and finite values of the pressure upon parallel plates. These results have been extended to an electromagnetic field subject to perfect conductor (hence idealized) boundary conditions on parallel plates, by various authors. The regularized and renormalized energy-momentum tensor has been evaluated up to second order in the gravity acceleration. In both the scalar and the electromagnetic case, studied to first order in the gravity acceleration, the theory predicts a tiny force in the upwards direction acting on the apparatus. This effect is conceptually very interesting, since it means that Casimir energy is indeed expected to gravitate, although the magnitude of the expected force makes it necessary to overcome very severe signal-modulation problems., Comment: 12 pages, prepared for the Fourth International Sakharov Conference

We report on preliminary results on the measurement of variations of the Casimir energy in rigid cavities through its influence on the superconducting transition of in-cavity aluminium (Al) thin films. After a description of the experimental apparatus we report on a measurement made with thermal photons, discussing its implications for the zero-point photons case. The influence of the gravity acceleration on the regularized energy-momentum tensor of the quantized electromagnetic field between two plane parallel conducting plates is derived. In the framework of designing laboratory tests of relativistic gravity, we investigate the gravitational field produced by the magnetic field of a solenoid. Observing this field might provide a mean of testing whether stresses gravitate as predicted by Einstein's theory. A previous study of this problem by Braginsky, Caves and Thorne predicted that the contribution to the gravitational field resulting from the stresses of the magnetic field and of the solenoid walls would cancel the gravitational field produced by the mass-energy of the magnetic field, resulting in a null magnetically-generated gravitational force outside the solenoid. They claim that this null result, once proved experimentally, would demonstrate the stress contribution to gravity. We show that this result is incorrect, as it arises from an incomplete analysis of the stresses, which neglects the axial stresses in the walls. Once the stresses are properly evaluated, we find that the gravitational field outside a long solenoid is in fact independent of Maxwell and material stresses, and it coincides with the newtonian field produced by the linear mass distribution equivalent to the density of magnetic energy stored in a unit length of the solenoid. We argue that the gravity of Maxwell stress can be directly measured in the vacuum region inside the solenoid, where the newtonian noise is absent in principle, and the gravity generated by Maxwell stresses is not screened by the negative gravity of magnetic-induced stresses in the solenoid walls., Comment: 10 pages, final version accepted for publication in PRD

This paper derives a set of general relativistic Cardinal Equations for the equilibrium of an extended body in a uniform gravitational field. These equations are essential for a proper understanding of the mechanics of suspended relativistic systems. As an example, the prototypical case of a suspended vessel filled with radiation is discussed. The mechanics of Casimir apparatuses at rest in the gravitational field of the Earth is then considered. Starting from an expression for the Casimir energy-momentum tensor in a weak gravitational field recently derived by the authors, it is here shown that, in the case of a rigid cavity supported by a stiff mount, the weight of the Casimir energy $E_C$ stored in the cavity corresponds to a gravitational mass $M=E_C/c^2$, in agreement with the covariant conservation law of the regularized energy-momentum tensor. Aladin2 is an experiment devoted to the first measurement of variations of Casimir energy in a rigid body. The main short-term scientific motivation relies on the possibility of the first demonstration of a phase transition influenced by vacuum fluctuations while, in the long term and in the mainframe of the cosmological constant problem, it can be regarded as the first step towards a measurement of the weight of vacuum energy. We study the influence of Casimir energy on the critical field of a superconducting film, and we show that by this means it might be possible to directly measure, for the first time, the variation of Casimir energy that accompanies the superconducting transition. Quantization of electrodynamics in curved space-time in the Lorenz gauge and with arbitrary gauge parameter makes it necessary to study Green functions of non-minimal operators with variable coefficients. Starting from the integral representation of photon Green functions, we link them to the evaluation of integrals involving Gamma-functions. Eventually, the full asymptotic expansion of the Feynman photon Green function at small values of the world function, as well as its explicit dependence on the gauge parameter, are obtained without adding by hand a mass term to the Faddeev-Popov Lagrangian. Coincidence limits of second covariant derivatives of the associated Hadamard function are also evaluated, as a first step towards the energy-momentum tensor in the non-minimal case., Comment: Latex file. Aladin2 is an experiment devoted to the first measurement of variations of Casimir energy in a rigid cavity. The main scientific motivation relies on the possibility of the first demonstration of a phase transition influenced by vacuum fluctuations. The guiding principle of the measurement, based on the behaviour of the critical field for an in-cavity superconducting film, will be only briefly recalled. In this paper, after an introduction to the long term motivations, the experimental apparatus and the results of the first measurement of sensitivity will be presented in detail, particularly in comparison with the expected signal. We consider a five-layer Casimir cavity, including a thin superconducting film. We show that when the cavity is cooled below the critical temperature for the onset of superconductivity, the sharp variation (in the microwave region) of the reflection coefficient of the film produces a variation in the value of the Casimir energy. Even though the relative variation in the Casimir energy is very small, its magnitude can be comparable to the condensation energy of the superconducting film, and thus causes a significant increase in the value of the critical magnetic field, required to destroy the superconductivity of the film. This paper deals with the use of a magnetic levitation system as a part of a multi-stage seismic attenuator for gravitational wave interferometric antennas. The proposed configuration uses permanent magnets in attraction to balance the suspended weight, plus a closed loop position control to obtain a stable levitation. The system is analyzed using a MATLAB simulation code to compute the forces exerted by extended magnets.
