Este artículo presenta de manera general las formas de apropiación y construcción de la ciudad y de los sujetos urbanos a partir del acervo cultural de las regiones de la Costa Atlántica, El Altiplano Cundiboyacense y las regiones cálidas de Cundinamarca y Boyacá, comparándolas con grupos de nativos bo­gotanos.Desarrolla un análisis desde el conocimiento de quiénes somo través del abordaje de la construcción-reconstruccón de la ciudad, manifestada en la apropiación de lo urbano, en la posibilidad de una identidad urbana/ bogotana en la doble vía de aportes y de asun­ción de elementos, identidad hoy muy discu­tida.Con un análisis de las implicaciones que tie­ nen las representaciones tanto sobre ciudad como sobre las regiones, para la construc­ ción de la misma para la construcción del sujeto habitante de Bogota; y de otra, de la diferenciación de estas representaciones de­ pendiendo delos grupos regionales así como de sus condiciones sociales. This paper presents and compares diftercnt ways in which urban and native people in sorne Colombian regions (Costa Atlántica, altiplano Cundiboyacense, warm regions in Cundinamarca and Boyacá and the Sabana de Bogotá) build and adapt themselves to the city.Going out from the knowledge about who we are (by means of building and re-build­ ing the city) an analysis is developed. It takes into consideration some ways of making the city suitable to peoples "needs concerning the development of their own identity. Such a process implies different forms in which peog assimilate elements and values from their environment and contribute with other ones to developing an own identity.This study analyses, also, the influence of subjective representations on the building process of cities and regions. Besides, it points out different kinds of subjective representations depending on regional groups as well as on their social conditions

In this paper we introduce Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) for designing the tibial part of Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) by exploiting the shape-memory and pseudo-elasticity property of the SMA (e. g. NiTi). This would eliminate the drawbacks of the state-of-the art PMMA based knee-spacer including fracture, sustainability, dislocation, tilting, translation and subluxation for tackling the Osteoarthritis especially for the aged people of 45-plus or the athletes. In this paper a Computer Aided Design (CAD) model using SolidWorks for the knee-spacer is presented based on the proposed SMA adopting the state-of-the art industry-standard geometry that is used in the PMMA based spacer design. Subsequently Ansys based Finite Element Analysis is carried out to measure and compare the performance between the proposed SMA based model with the state-of-the art PMMA ones. 81% more bending is noticed in the PMMA based spacer compared to the proposed SMA that would eventually cause fracture and tilting or translation of spacer. Permanent shape deformation of approximately 58.75% in PMMA based spacer is observed compared to recoverable 11% deformation in SMA when same load is applied on both separately.

Herpes simplex viruses are agents responsible for a variety of infections on buccal and genital mucosa; they are neurotropic, capable of lodging in the nerve cells and remaining latent with subsequent reactivations; in some cases, they can provoke meningitis and encephalitis; and they have a significant morbidity and are associated with a high mortality. The present project aims to determine HSV’s effect on the etiology of acute central nervous system (CNS) syndromes using the detection of specific antibodies in serum and cerebrospinal fluid. The 93 paired samples from patients with neurological affectations studied demonstrated negative results in the LCR bacteriological study and their Alb-LCR/Alb-serum relation was < 0.0075. Antibodies were detected by the enzymatic immunoassay ELISA method, where 1.2% (1/93) of the serum samples turned out positive for IgM; 89.24% (83/93) of the serum samples resulted positive for IgG; and 27.39% (20/93) of LCR samples were positive for anti-IgG. IgG presence in LCR suggested the intrathecal production of these antibodies inside the CNS, which demonstrates a significant participation by this viral agent in infections and diseases associated with the CNS. Introduction: Pancreatic cancer presents the worst survival rates of all neoplasms. Surgical resection is the only potentially curative treatment, but is associated with high complication rates and outcome is bad even in those resected cases. Therefore, candidates amenable for resection must be carefully selected. Identification of prognostic factors preoperatively may help to improve the treatment of these patients, focusing on individually management based on the expected response. Patients and methods: We perform a retrospective study of 59 patients with histological diagnosis of pancreatic carcinoma between 1999 and 2003, looking for possible prognostic factors. Results: We analyze 59 patients, 32 males and 27 females with a mean age of 63,8 years. All the patients were operated, performing palliative surgery in 32% and tumoral resection in 68%, including pancreaticoduodenectomies in 51% and distal pancreatectomy in 17%. Median global survival was 14 months (Range 1-110). We observed that preoperative levels of hemoglobin under 12 g/dl (p = 0,0006) and serum albumina under 2,8 g/dl (p = 0,021) are associated with worse survival. Conclusion: Preoperative levels of hemoglobin and serum albumina may be prognostic indicators in pancreatic cancer. Introducción: El cáncer de páncreas presenta la peor tasa de supervivencia de todas las neoplasias. La resección quirúrgica es el único tratamiento potencialmente curativo, pero está grabado con una alta tasa de complicaciones y el pronóstico continúa siendo malo en aquellos casos resecados, por lo que es necesario seleccionar bien a los candidatos. Por ello, la identificación de factores pronósticos de forma preoperatoria podría contribuir a mejorar el tratamiento de estos pacientes orientando hacia pautas más personalizadas en función de la respuesta esperable. Material y métodos: Realizamos un estudio retrospectivo de 59 pacientes con diagnóstico histológico de carcinoma de páncreas entre 1999 y 2003, para identificar posibles factores pronósticos. Resultados: De los 59 pacientes, 32 eran varones y 27 mujeres, con una edad media de 63,8 años. Todos los pacientes fueron operados, realizándose cirugía paliativa en el 32% y resección tumoral en el 68%, incluyendo duodenopancreatectomías cefálicas en el 51% y pancreatectomías distales en el 17%. La mediana de supervivencia global fue de 14 meses (intervalo 1-110). Observamos que los niveles preoperatorios de hemoglobina inferiores a 12 g/dl (p = 0,0006) y de albúmina sérica por debajo de 2,8 g/dl (p = 0,021) se asocian a menor supervivencia global. Conclusión: Los niveles preoperatorios de hemoglobina y albúmina pueden ser indicadores pronósticos en el cáncer de páncreas.

Solitary diverticulum of the cecum is a benign condition uncommon in the Western world, and with a higher incidence in Asian population. They are usually asymptomatic, and manifest clinically only with complications such as inflammation, perforation, or bleeding. They are a rare cause of acute abdominal pain, clinically similar to acute appendicitis, with tenderness in the right lower quadrant, fever, and leukocytosis. In spite of the information provided by ultrasonography or CT scans, a correct preoperative diagnosis is still difficult to reach, and is usually arrived at in the operating theater; differentiation from a neoplasm may be also sometimes complicated, and a wide surgical resection is usually required for such cases. We report on 5 cases of inflammation and perforation of a solitary cecal diverticulum, and perform a literature review.

Background: The release of CD30 molecule in the soluble form (sCD30) is considered a feature of Th2 activation and proliferation of the cellular phenotype Th2. Aim: To analyze the immunoregulatory role of sCD30 in the evolution of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Patients and methods: Three study groups were formed: 15 patients with acute infection by HBV who remitted toward the resolution of the infection; 15 patients who evolved to the carrier state and 15 subjects without clinical history of infection by this or other viruses. The determination of serological markers for the HBV was done by the Microparticles Enzymatic Immunoanalysis techniques (MEIA). The method of double antibody by ELISA was used For sCD30 determination. Results: A significant sCD30 increase (p < 0.05) was observed in patients with acute infection, during the acute phase (135.7 ± 36.7). These values decreased to 16.2 ± 2.5 during the convalescent phase. Patients that evolved to the carrier state, did not experience a rise in sCD30 values (40.2 ± 6.7, 38 ± 9.2 and 36.1 ± 8.3 during the acute phase, at 120 and 240 days respectively). The value in the control group was 34.8 ± 6.7. Conclusions: The group that evolved towards remission experienced a higher activation of the Th2 cellular phenotype, promoting humoral immune response. An inactivity of sCD30 values was observed in the group that evolved to the carrier state (Rev Med Chile 2001; 129: 1248-52).

Background: Yukpa aborigines start early in life their sexual activity and promiscuity with native and foreign individuals is common among women. This behavior allows the installation and propagation of Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Aim: To determine the presence of antibodies to HSV-2 in a Yukpa Amerindian community at Zulia State, Venezuela. Subjects and methods: We studied 96 natives, between 13 and 49 years old (62.3% of the whole population, 100% of individuals in fertile age). Control population consisted of 76 individuals, with similar sex and age range distribution, of the urban population from Maracaibo, Zulia State, Venezuela. HSV-2 serologic status was determined by an indirect fluorescent antibody test. Results: Antibodies to HSV-2 were detected in 53.1% of Yukpa population and 21.1% of urban population. Aboriginal women aged 21 to 40 years old had a prevalence of antibodies against HSV-2 of 66.7%. Among pregnant native women, the prevalence of antibodies against HSV-2 was 54.6%. Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of antibodies against HSV-2 among Yukpa natives in Venezuela. (Rev Méd Chile 2001; 129: 247-52).
