Several experimental campaigns aimed at the dielectric characterization of healthy and malignant tissues, have been proposed over many years. However, disagreements among the results posed a number of questions on accurate knowledge of dielectric properties of biological tissues up to date. The reason for these disagreements are several. We aim to partially address these issues by firstly establishing a rigorous procedure for the measurement of ex-vivo animal and human-derived tissue samples. Then, we investigate the correlation between the dielectric data variability and sample hydration. Measurements were obtained from 0.5 to 50 GHz from liver and kidney cortex of porcine, ovine and bovine animals and one human cadaver. The correlation between the standard deviation of the measurements for each sample and its exact water content is investigated. This enabled the thorough analysis of both the intra- and inter-organ variability together with the intra- and inter-animal variability. Results show that the sample hydration level has a direct influence on the intra- and inter-organ variability, both for homogeneous animal and human tissues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With increasing age, the skin also becomes more fragile and susceptible to trauma, leading to more lacerations and bruising. Furthermore, wound healing is impaired in older women. Oestrogen use after the menopause increases collagen content, dermal thickness and elasticity, and it decreases the likelihood of senile dry skin. Large-scale clinical trials are necessary to help make informed recommendations regarding postmenopausal oestrogen use and its role in the prevention of skin ageing. Oestrogen has profound effects on connective tissue turnover, no matter the site. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate circulating and intracellular levels of Th1 and Th2 cytokines in women with threatened miscarriage (TM) and subsequent outcome. STUDY DESIGN: Plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-receptors 1 and 2, TNF[alpha], interferon gamma (IFN[gamma]), and interleukins (IL) -6 and -10 were measured by flow cytometric bead assays in 80 women with TM: 53 women with normal outcome and 27 women who miscarried. Fluorescent antibody labeling was also performed on whole blood in a subgroup of 27 women of TM: 16 women with normal outcome and 11 women who miscarried. RESULTS: Monocyte expression of TNF[alpha] and circulating levels of TNF[alpha], IFN[gamma], IL-10, IL-6, and TNF-R1 were significantly lower, whereas circulating levels of TNF[alpha]/IL-10, IFN[gamma]/IL-10, and TNF[alpha]/IL-6 ratios were significantly higher, in women with TM who subsequently miscarried, compared with the women with normal outcome. CONCLUSION: An increased Th1 type of immune response, which was similar to that observed in preterm delivery, was found in TM cases that were complicated by a subsequent miscarriage. Endometrial cancer (EC) is increasing incidence among women, and it constitutes a health problem for women globally. An important aspect of EC management involves the use of protein biomarkers for early detection and monitoring. Protein biomarkers allow the identification of high-risk patients, the detection of the disease in its early stages, and the assessment of treatment responses. Mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics offers robust analytical techniques and a comprehensive understanding of proteins. Proteomics methods allow scientists to investigate both the quantities and functions of proteins. Thus, it provides valuable insights into how proteins are altered under different conditions. This review summarizes recent advances in MS-based proteomic biomarker discovery for EC, focusing on different sample types and MS-based techniques used in clinical studies. The review emphasized in detail the most commonly used key sources such as blood, urine, vaginal fluids and tissue. Furthermore, MS-based proteomics techniques such as untargeted, targeted, sequential window acquisition of all theoretical mass spectra (SWATH-MS) and mass spectrometry imaging used in the discovery and validation/validation phases were evaluated. This review highlights the importance of biomarker discovery and clinical translation to improve diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes in EC. Introduction: GYNOCARE, the European Network for Gynaecological Rare Cancer Research, set out to evaluate the current status of biobanks with access to rare gynaecological tumours, with a view to harmonising sample and data collection and associated consent, to facilitate collaborative cross-border research, enabling clinical trials and translational research., Methods: Two digital surveys were formulated, one covering clinical and scientific parameters and one exploring ethical and regulatory issues around informed consent., Results: Data were analysed for 20 common responses, from 7 European countries. Tissue was the main sample type biobanked with 63 % also banking blood. Documentation of clinical data, treatment regimens and classification systems varied. Eighty percent collected pathological information. Most biobanks were linked to medical records but only one fifth with national registries. The Information Sheet covered governance, benefits/risks, sharing (mainly for non-profit research), return of results and data protection safeguards. Only 37 % informed patients about sample and data storage, although about half stored samples for an indefinite time. Pseudonymisation and Data Protection Officer approval were the prime data safeguards. Less than half explained the difference between anonymisation and pseudonymisation. Broad consent was the norm (84 %) and 95 % granted the right to withdraw consent. Three countries have Biobank legislation., Conclusion: These surveys provide a snapshot of the current state of biobanks and highlight divergences in the consent process and data management. Ovarian cancer in children and adolescents is rare, presenting unique diagnostic and management challenges distinct from adult cases. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of this disease, focusing on the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to care. We discuss the common presentation of ovarian malignant masses in young patients, highlighting the role of imaging and tumor markers in diagnosis. The paper delves into the surgical management of these tumors, emphasizing the importance of fertility-sparing techniques whenever possible. We explore the role of adjuvant chemotherapy, considering histological subtypes and disease stage. Furthermore, we address the good prognosis associated with early diagnosis and treatment, with survival rates exceeding 90 % in many cases. Finally, the need for long-term follow-up to monitor for potential recurrence is underscored and the long-term treatment-related effects are addressed. In the era of renewed space exploration, comprehending the effects of the space environment on human health, particularly for deep space missions, is crucial. While extensive research exists on the impacts of spaceflight, there is a gap regarding female reproductive risks. We hypothesize that space stressors could have enduring effects on female health, potentially increasing risks for future pregnancies upon return to Earth, particularly related to small-for-gestational-age (SGA) fetuses. To address this, we identify a shared microRNA (miRNA) signature between SGA and the space environment, conserved across humans and mice. These miRNAs target genes and pathways relevant to diseases and development. Employing a machine learning approach, we identify potential FDA-approved drugs to mitigate these risks, including estrogen and progesterone receptor antagonists, vitamin D receptor antagonists, and DNA polymerase inhibitors. Introduction: Cervical cancer (CC) is a type of cancer with poor prognosis when diagnosed in advanced stage with a big socioeconomic burden. The incidence rates have wide variations among European countries depending on the implementation or not of screening, vaccination programs and the human development index (HDI). Most studies on cost-effectiveness of CC screening programs are carried out in countries with a high HDI, however more recent reviews of screening approaches are coming from countries with lower HDI aiming to identify the best screening strategies. Our study aims to identify which are the currently applied and most cost-effective strategies of CC screening in Europe., Materials and Methods: This is a systematic review conducted in three different databases (PubMed, Scopus and ScienceDirect) and reported following the PRISMA guidelines. General key terms for all databases were the following: cost-effectiveness, cervical cancer, screening, Europe. We included studies in English, Italian, Spanish and Bulgarian, published in the last 25 years, reporting data on cost-effectiveness of CC screening, costs and outcome measures. The methodological quality of the articles was evaluated with a standardized tool., Results: A total of 262 studies were identified and 22 studies were included in the final analysis. In 90.1 % of the economic studies, the new screening strategy was shown to be more cost-effective compared to the current one or compared to no screening. The optimal strategy mostly involved primary HPV testing, combined with cytology or as stand-alone screening technique. Several scenarios differing on starting age and periodicities for CC screening, combination of techniques and triage, were found to be cost-effective and below the willingness to pay (WTP) threshold. The methodology of all included studies was assessed from 10 to 11 on the JBI standardized tool and Drummond 11-point checklist., Conclusion: Numerous cost-effective options for CC screening in different European countries were identified in this systematic review. HPV testing, with or without cytology, mainly starting at 30 years of age and repeated every 5 years or more was the most cost-effective technique. Clinical trials that investigate therapies for rare gynaecological cancers (RGC) are essential to provide evidence-based data towards new effective and safe treatments, however, they present unique challenges. The main objective of this narrative review is to summarize completed phase III clinical trials investigating therapies for RGC and to discuss the outcomes of these trials. PRISMA guidelines were used to report the steps of the review. We searched the WHO's International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, clinicaltrials.gov and PubMed/Medline for publications reporting results from clinical trials on RGC including at least one medication. From 31 identified phase III clinical trials, 13 were still ongoing, four were terminated and just eight (25.8 %) had posted results and/or publications. The latter completed trials were mostly multi-center and located in at least two continents, participants were mainly adults, and the recruitment period varied from about 2.5 to 10.5 years. Allocation was randomized with parallel assignment in 7 out of 8 trials, while only one trial had double masking. The most common primary outcome measure was progression-free survival (PFS), followed by overall survival (OS). Patient-reported outcomes were secondary outcome measures in four completed trials, assessing quality of life by various questionnaires. Most of the trials did not meet their primary endpoints. Objective: Hemodialysis patients usually receive an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in the arm as vascular access conduit to allow dialysis 2-3 times a week. This AVF introduces the high flow necessary for dialysis, but over time the ever-present supraphysiological flow is the leading cause of complications. This study aims to develop an implantable device able to non-invasively remove the high flow outside dialysis sessions., Methods: The developed prototype features a magnetic ring allowing external coupling and torque transmission to non-invasively control an AVF valve. Mock-up devices were implanted into arm and sheep cadavers to test sizes and locations. The transmission torque, output force, and valve closure are measured for different representative skin thicknesses., Results: The prototype was placed successfully into arm and sheep cadavers. In the prototype, a maximum output force of 78.9 ± 4.2 N, 46.7 ± 1.9 N, 25.6 ± 0.7 N, 13.5 ± 0.6 N and 6.3 ± 0.4 N could be achieved non-invasively through skin thicknesses of 1-5 mm respectively. The fistula was fully collapsible in every measurement through skin thickness up to the required 4 mm., Conclusion: The prototype satisfies the design requirements. It is fully implantable and allows closure and control of an AVF through non-invasive torque transmission. In vivo studies are pivotal in assessing functionality and understanding systemic effects., Significance: A method is introduced to transfer large amounts of energy to a medical implant for actuation of a mechanical valve trough a closed surface. This system allows non-invasive control of an AVF to reduce complications related to the permanent high flow in conventional AVFs.

Ovarian and cervical cancers are the two most frequent kind of gynaecological cancers (GCs). In spite of advances in prevention, screening and treatment, cervical cancer still leads to an increased morbidity and mortality worldwide. Ovarian cancer is often detected at a late stage, which significantly reduces the effectiveness of available treatments. Therefore, novel methods are desperately needed to improve the clinical care of GC patients. MicroRNAs, also known as short noncoding RNAs (miRNAs/miRs), are a diverse group of RNAs with a length of 22 nucleotides. These typically cause translational repression and mRNA degradation by interacting with target mRNAs' 3' untranslated region (3'-UTR), together with other regions and gene promoters. Under certain conditions, they are also able to activate translation or regulate transcription. It has been demonstrated that miRNAs are crucial to several biological processes leading to tumorigenesis, including GCs. Recent research has shown that miR-9 affects carcinogenesis.
