3. Hypersonic Boundary-Layer Trip Development for Hyper-X

Abstract

Boundary layer trip devices for the Hper-X forebody have been experimentally examined in several wind tunnels. Five different trip configurations were compared in three hypersonic facilities, the LaRC 20-Inch Mach 6 Air Tunnel, the LaRC 31 -Inch Mach 10 Air Tunnel, and in the HYPULSE Reflected Shock Tunnel at GASL. Heat transfer distributions, utilizing the phosphor thermography and thin-film techniques, shock system details, and surface streamline patterns were measured on a 0.333-scale model of the Hyper-X forebody. Parametric variations include angles-of-attack of 0-deg, 2-deg, and 4-deg; Reynolds numbers based on model length of 1.2 to 15.4 million: and inlet cowl door simulated in both open and closed positions. Comparisons of transition due to discrete roughness elements have led to the selection of a trip configuration for the Hyper-X Mach 7 flight vehicle.

5. Calibration of HYPULSE for hypervelocity air flows corresponding to flight Mach numbers 13.5, 15, and 17

Abstract

A series of air calibration tests were performed in GASL's HYPULSE facility in order to more accurately determine test section flow conditions for flows simulating total enthalpies in the Mach 13 to 17 range. Present calibration data supplements previous data and includes direct measurement of test section pitot and static pressure, acceleration tube wall pressure and heat transfer, and primary and secondary incident shock velocities. Useful test core diameters along with the corresponding free-stream conditions and usable testing times were determined. For the M13.5 condition, in-stream static pressure surveys showed the temporal and spacial uniformity of this quantity across the useful test core. In addition, finite fringe interferograms taken of the free-stream flow at the test section did not indicate the presence of any 'strong' wave system for any of the conditions investigated.

8. Quality Assesment of Interpretative Commenting in Clinical Chemistry

Abstract

Background: Clinical interpretation of laboratory results is an integral part of clinical chemistry. However, the performance goals for assessing interpretative commenting in this discipline have not been as well established as for the quality of analytical requirements. Methods: We present a review of the 10 case reports circulated in the 2002 Patient Report Comments Program by the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) and the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists Chemical Pathology Group of RCPA-Quality Assurance Programs Pty Ltd. Participants were expected to add an interpretative comment to a set of results accompanied by brief clinical details. Comments received were broken down into components that were translated into key phrases. An expert panel evaluated the appropriateness of the key phrases and proposed a suggested composite comment. A case summary/rationale was also returned to participants. Results: There was considerable diversity in the range of interpretative comments received for each case report. Although the majority of comments received were felt to be acceptable by the expert panel, some comments were felt to be inappropriate, misleading, or in a few instances, dangerous. Conclusion: The golden rule in medicine is "do no harm". Although there is no objective evidence that interpretive comments help to improve patient outcomes, if comments are added to reports it is important that they reflect accepted practice and current guidelines. It is of concern that a large proportion of comments returned were considered to be inappropriate and/or misleading. The Patient Report Comments Program has highlighted the need to consider limiting commenting to persons with clear expertise.

16. Parallel processing and maintaining adequate alignment between instruments and methods.

Abstract

Parallel processing of laboratory tests across more than one instrument platform: permits dealing with increasing workloads; but broadens uncertainty of measurement; minimising measurement uncertainty means keeping assay performances continuously aligned. Important questions are: Why is there the need to demonstrate "acceptable alignment" between methods/instruments? What methods/tools can be used to test method/instrument alignment and how adjustments can be made? What is an "acceptable" alignment? How often should alignments be checked and what is the reasoning for this?
