1. Attract, Inspire, Mentor and Support Students (AIMS[superscript 2]): 2021 Quasi-Experimental Design Study Report

Abstract: Attract, Inspire, Mentor and Support Students (AIMS[superscript 2]), a grant-funded program from the U.S. Department of Education for the HSI-STEM and Articulation Programs, focuses on improving outcomes for Hispanic and low-income students in STEM. Using a quasi-experimental design (QED) approach, this study examined outcomes between students who participated in AIMS[superscript 2] and a matched control group. Results indicated that AIMS[superscript 2] is highly effective in increased academic success outcomes among its participants. AIMS[superscript 2] students outperformed a matched control group on all outcome measures among both freshmen and transfers. In particular, there were statistically significant differences for all nine outcomes for Freshmen, and for five out of ten outcomes among Transfers. Moreover, among AIMS[superscript 2] participants, the research component of the program, holding other variables constant, trended towards higher success in outcomes in comparison to AIMS[superscript 2] participants who received faculty and peer mentoring only. Implications for future research include examining additional time to track degree completion outcomes for all entry cohorts and assessment of endogenous factors that may be influencing the outcomes. Abstract: International audience; Small geometry effects have become increasingly important in analog circuits as transistors continue to shrink. As a result, transconductance-to-drain current (gm/ID) transistor parameters are no longer width-independent. In this brief, a procedure to develop “unit-sized” transistors with minimal sensitivity to small geometry effects is proposed. It is shown that by using the “unit-sized” transistors, the impact of small geometry effects on gm/ID dependent parameters such as current density and self gain can be reduced to 3.6 percent and 1.5 percent respectively.

Abstract: International audience; For a fluid-solid interaction problem with Lipschitz interface, we investigate the partial Fréchet differentiability of the solutions and the approximate far-field-pattern with respect to solid material parameters. Differentiability is shown in standard Sobolev framework, and the derivatives are characterized as solutions to inhomogeneous fluid-solid transmission problems. To validate the accuracy of the characterization, we compare analytical values with numerical ones given by Interior Penalty Discontinuous Galerkin (IPDG) in a setting with circular obstacles. Our comparisons also show that IPDG gives results with high precision and incurs almost no effect of discretization error accumulation.

Abstract: Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-28T19:52:06Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2022-03-18 Urbanization transforms environments in ways that alter biological evolution. We examined whether urban environmental change drives parallel evolution by sampling 110,019 white clover plants from 6169 populations in 160 cities globally. Plants were assayed for a Mendelian antiherbivore defense that also affects tolerance to abiotic stressors. Urban-rural gradients were associated with the evolution of clines in defense in 47% of cities throughout the world. Variation in the strength of clines was explained by environmental changes in drought stress and vegetation cover that varied among cities. Sequencing 2074 genomes from 26 cities revealed that the evolution of urban-rural clines was best explained by adaptive evolution, but the degree of parallel adaptation varied among cities. Our results demonstrate that urbanization leads to adaptation at a global scale. Abstract: This study aimed to measure the acute effects of kinesio taping at different stretches on tuck jump performance in active individuals. Seventy-five males (23.01±2.24 years, 178.35±8.12 cm, 72.47±6.58 kg) were randomly distributed into three groups: (1) kinesio taping without stretch, (2) kinesio taping with approximately 50% stretch, and (3) kinesio taping with approximately 75% stretch. The tuck jump performance of all participants was determined at baseline, immediately after applying kinesio taping, and 24 and 72 hours later. The participants’ tuck jump performance did not improve immediately after the kinesio taping application, 24 hours, and 72 hours after the application. No significant differences were found between the kinesio taping groups at any time point (p>0.05). This study demonstrated no effects of kinesio taping on neuromuscular performance.

Abstract: After centuries of human-mediated disturbances, Caribbean reef communities are vastly different from those described in the 1950s. Many are functionally dominated by macroalgae, but this community state represents only one of several possibilities into which present-day coral reefs can transition. Octocorals have always been abundant on Caribbean reefs, but increases in their abundance over the last few decades suggest that arborescent octocorals have the potential to expand their populations on reefs that hitherto had been dominated by scleractinians. Here we show that octocoral-dominated communities at three sites on the fringing reefs of St. John, US Virgin Islands, were resilient to the effects of two Category 5 hurricanes in 2017. We describe the dynamics of octocoral communities over five years at three sites on shallow reefs (~9-m depth), and test for the effects of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The hurricanes depressed the densities of juvenile and adult octocoral colonies as much as 47%. However, there were only weak effects on species richness and the relative abundances of the octocoral species. The hurricanes did not alter patterns of spatial variability in octocoral community structure that existed among sites prior to the storms. The density of octocoral recruits (individuals ≤ 5 cm high) was reduced in the year following the hurricanes, mainly due to a decline in abundance of recruits

Abstract: Ocean acidification (OA) is a major threat to coral reefs, which are built by calcareous species. However, long-term assessments of the impacts of OA are scarce, limiting the understanding of the capacity of corals and coralline algae to acclimatize to high partial pressure of carbon dioxide ( $${p}_{\mathrm{CO}_{2}}$$ ) levels. Species-specific sensitivities to OA are influenced by its impacts on chemistry within the calcifying fluid (CF). Here, we investigate the capacity of multiple coral and calcifying macroalgal species to acclimatize to elevated $${p}_{\mathrm{CO}_{2}}$$ by determining their chemistry in the CF during a year-long experiment. We found no evidence of acclimatization to elevated $${p}_{\mathrm{CO}_{2}}$$ across any of the tested taxa. The effects of increasing seawater $${p}_{\mathrm{CO}_{2}}$$ on the CF chemistry were rapid and persisted until the end of the experiment. Our results show that acclimatization of the CF chemistry does not occur within one year, which confirms the threat of OA for future reef accretion and ecological function. Calcifying marine species are threatened by ocean acidification. A year-long study of calcifying fluid chemistry shows that reef species, both corals and calcifying macroalgal species, were not able to adapt to ocean acidification.

Abstract: Significance The growth of coral reefs is threatened by the dual stressors of ocean warming and acidification. Despite a wealth of studies assessing the impacts of climate change on individual taxa, projections of their impacts on coral reef net carbonate production are limited. By projecting impacts across 233 different locations, we demonstrate that the majority of coral reefs will be unable to maintain positive net carbonate production globally by the year 2100 under representative concentration pathways RCP4.5 and 8.5, while even under RCP2.6, coral reefs will suffer reduced accretion rates. Our results provide quantitative projections of how different climate change stressors will influence whole ecosystem carbonate production across coral reefs in all major ocean basins., Ocean warming and acidification threaten the future growth of coral reefs. This is because the calcifying coral reef taxa that construct the calcium carbonate frameworks and cement the reef together are highly sensitive to ocean warming and acidification. However, the global-scale effects of ocean warming and acidification on rates of coral reef net carbonate production remain poorly constrained despite a wealth of studies assessing their effects on the calcification of individual organisms. Here, we present global estimates of projected future changes in coral reef net carbonate production under ocean warming and acidification. We apply a meta-analysis of responses of coral reef taxa calcification and bioerosion rates to predicted changes in coral cover driven by climate change to estimate the net carbonate production rates of 183 reefs worldwide by 2050 and 2100. We forecast mean global reef net carbonate production under representative concentration pathways (RCP) 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5 will decline by 76, 149, and 156%, respectively, by 2100. While 63% of reefs are projected to continue to accrete by 2100 under RCP2.6, 94% will be eroding by 2050 under RCP8.5, and no reefs will continue to accrete at rates matching projected sea level rise under RCP4.5 or 8.5 by 2100. Projected reduced coral cover due to bleaching events predominately drives these declines rather than the direct physiological impacts of ocean warming and acidification on calcification or bioerosion. Presently degraded reefs were also more sensitive in our analysis. These findings highlight the low likelihood that the world’s coral reefs will maintain their functional roles without near-term stabilization of atmospheric CO2 emissions.

Abstract: Given a colored point set in the plane, a perfect rainbow polygon is a simple polygon that contains exactly one point of each color, either in its interior or on its boundary. Let $\operatorname{rb-index}(S)$ denote the smallest size of a perfect rainbow polygon for a colored point set $S$, and let $\operatorname{rb-index}(k)$ be the maximum of $\operatorname{rb-index}(S)$ over all $k$-colored point sets in general position; that is, every $k$-colored point set $S$ has a perfect rainbow polygon with at most $\operatorname{rb-index}(k)$ vertices. Abstract: International audience; Nutrient pollution is altering coastal ecosystems worldwide. On coral reefs, excess nutrients can favor the production of algae at the expense of reef‐building corals, yet the role of nutrients in driving community changes such as shifts from coral to macroalgae is not well understood. Here we investigate the potential role of anthropogenic nutrient loading in driving recent coral‐to‐macroalgae phase shifts on reefs in the lagoons surrounding the Pacific island of Moorea, French Polynesia. We use nitrogen (N) tissue content and stable isotopes (δ15N) in an abundant macroalga (Turbinaria ornata) together with empirical models of nutrient discharge to describe spatial and temporal patterns of nutrient enrichment in the lagoons. We then employ time series data to test whether recent increases in macroalgae are associated with nutrients. Our results revealed that patterns of N enrichment were linked to several factors, including rainfall, wave‐driven circulation, and distance from anthropogenic nutrient sources, especially human sewage. Reefs near large watersheds, where inputs of N from sewage and agriculture are high, have been consistently enriched in N for at least the last decade. In many of these areas, corals have decreased and macroalgae have increased, while reefs with lower levels of N input have maintained high cover of coral and low cover of macroalgae. Importantly, these patchy phase shifts to macroalgae have occurred despite substantial island‐wide increases in the density and biomass of herbivorous fishes over the time period. Together, these results indicate that nutrient loading may be an important driver of coral‐to‐macroalgae phase shifts in the lagoons of Moorea even though the reefs harbor an abundant and diverse herbivore assemblage. These results emphasize the important role that bottom‐up factors can play in driving coral‐to‐macroalgae phase shifts and underscore the critical importance of watershed management for reducing inputs of nutrients and other land‐based pollutants to coral reef ecosystems

Lamouroux is a genus of brown algae of the family Sargassaceae (Fucales, Phaeophyceae) found throughout the tropics, subtropics, and occasionally in temperate marine regions. There are currently 22 recognized species, although the taxonomy ofTurbinariais under current refinement with the advancement of genetic analysis techniques for this genus. EcologicallyTurbinariaplays an important role, as its morphology, life history, chemical and mechanical defenses, and rafting dispersal ability have contributed to its increasing distribution across reefs worldwide and to its role in the phase shift from coral to macroalgal reefs worldwide. AlthoughTurbinariais occasionally consumed and used as a fertilizer locally, this genus is not currently highly exploited for industrial use, but research into the potential ofTurbinariaextracts for cosmetic, nutritive, fertilizer, and pharmaceutical industries has yielded some promising results.Turbinaria's alginate, fucoidan, pigment, and unique fatty acid content may prove useful in medical applications due to their antioxidant and anticancer properties.

Abstract: International audience; A new computational strategy is proposed for determining all elastic scatterer characteristics including the shape, the material properties (Lamé coefficients and density), and the location from the knowledge of far-field pattern (FFP) measurements. The proposed numerical approach is a multi-stage procedure in which a carefully designed regularized iterative method plays a central role. The adopted approach is critical for recognizing that the different nature and scales of the sought-after parameters as well as the frequency regime have different effects on the scattering observability. Identification results for two-dimensional elastic configurations highlight the performance of the designed solution methodology.

Abstract: Using light, living cells can be manipulated to form several centimeter long waveguide structures, capable of guiding light through scattering media. Here, we will discuss some results of self-trapping and guiding of light in biological suspensions of different cells, including cyanobacteria, E. coli, and red blood cells. A forward-scattering theoretical model is developed which helps understand the experimental observations. Formed waveguides can provide effective guidance for weaker light through scattered bio-soft-matter. The ability to transmit light through turbid fluids with low loss could open up the possibilities for deep-tissue imaging, as well as noninvasive treatment and diagnostics.

Abstract: Understanding how people rate their confidence is critical for the characterization of a wide range of perceptual, memory, motor and cognitive processes. To enable the continued exploration of these processes, we created a large database of confidence studies spanning a broad set of paradigms, participant populations and fields of study. The data from each study are structured in a common, easy-to-use format that can be easily imported and analysed using multiple software packages. Each dataset is accompanied by an explanation regarding the nature of the collected data. At the time of publication, the Confidence Database (which is available at ) contained 145 datasets with data from more than 8,700 participants and almost 4 million trials. The database will remain open for new submissions indefinitely and is expected to continue to grow. Here we show the usefulness of this large collection of datasets in four different analyses that provide precise estimations of several foundational confidence-related effects., NIH National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)

Abstract: Systems biology has experienced dramatic growth in the number, size, and complexity of computational models. To reproduce simulation results and reuse models, researchers must exchange unambiguous model descriptions. We review the latest edition of the Systems Biology Markup Language (SBML), a format designed for this purpose. A community of modelers and software authors developed SBML Level 3 over the past decade. Its modular form consists of a core suited to representing reaction‐based models and packages that extend the core with features suited to other model types including constraint‐based models, reaction‐diffusion models, logical network models, and rule‐based models. The format leverages two decades of SBML and a rich software ecosystem that transformed how systems biologists build and interact with models. More recently, the rise of multiscale models of whole cells and organs, and new data sources such as single‐cell measurements and live imaging, has precipitated new ways of integrating data with models. We provide our perspectives on the challenges presented by these developments and how SBML Level 3 provides the foundation needed to support this evolution., Over the past two decades, scientists from different fields have been developing SBML, a standard format for encoding computational models in biology and medicine. This article summarizes recent progress and gives perspectives on emerging challenges.

Abstract: Coral reefs throughout the tropics have experienced large declines in the abundance of scleractinian corals over the last few decades, and some reefs are becoming functionally dominated by animal taxa other than scleractinians. This phenomenon is striking on many shallow reefs in the tropical western Atlantic, where arborescent octocorals now are numerically and functionally dominant. Octocorals are one of several taxa that have been overlooked for decades in analyses of coral reef community dynamics, and our understanding of why octocorals are favoured (whereas scleractinians are not) on some modern reefs, and how they will affect the function of future reef communities, is not commensurate with the task of scientifically responding to the coral reef crisis. We summarize the biological and ecological features predisposing octocorals for success under contemporary conditions, and focus on those features that could have generated resistance and resilience of octocoral populations to environmental change on modern reefs. There is a rich set of opportunities for rapid advancement in understanding the factors driving the success of octocorals on modern reefs, but we underscore three lines of inquiry: (1) the functional implications of strongly mixotrophic, polytrophic, and plastic nutrition, (2) the capacity to recruit at high densities and maintain rapid initial rates of vertical growth, and (3) the emergent properties associated with dense animal forests at high colony densities.

Abstract: In this paper, we present an analysis of X-ray and optical/ultraviolet (UV) data from the favorable (Δ ∼ 0.077 au) 2018 apparition of comet 46P/Wirtanen. The comet was observed during three different epochs (before, during, and after perihelion) over a 1.5 month period using the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) and Ultraviolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) instruments on board the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We clearly detected the comet’s charge exchange-induced emission during the first two epochs (F x = (11.2 ± 0.8) and (6.9 ± 0.5) × 10−13 erg cm−2 s−1, respectively), while only an upper limit on the flux could be placed for the third epoch (F x < 1.38 × 10−13 erg cm−2 s−1). As such, 46P/Wirtanen is one of the least luminous comets to be detected in X-rays. X-ray emission from the charge exchange between solar wind ions and the neutrals in the coma were analyzed against the water-production rate (Swift/UVOT) and space weather measurements. Further analyses of the emission features show that the solar wind properties inferred from the observed X-ray spectrum are in good agreement with those measured by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) and Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft, proving the approach is reliable for solar wind diagnostics. It is also found that, despite the variability of the comet’s properties (e.g., the water-production rate used as a neutrals density proxy), cometary X-ray emission is primarily modulated by the solar wind.

Abstract: Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) capable of electrical read and write operations have emerged as a canonical building block for nonvolatile memory and logic. However, the cause of the widespread device properties found experimentally in various MTJ stacks, including tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), and voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA), remains elusive. Here, using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, we found that the MTJ crystallization quality, boron diffusion out of the CoFeB fixed layer, and minimal oxidation of the fixed layer correlate with the TMR. As with the CoFeB free layer, seed layer diffusion into the free layer/MgO interface is negatively correlated with the interfacial PMA, whereas the metal-oxides concentrations in the free layer correlate with the VCMA. Combined with formation enthalpy and thermal diffusion analysis that can explain the evolution of element distribution from MTJ stack designs and annealing temperatures, we further established a predictive materials design framework to guide the complex design space explorations for high-performance MTJs. Abstract: International audience; Located in Saint-Césaire, east of Saintes, in Charente-Maritime (France), the archaeological recordof La Roche-à-Pierrot is at the heart of the debates concerning the Middle/Upper Palaeolithictransition. To this day, La Roche-à-Pierrot constitutes the only site to have provided a relativelycomplete Neandertal skeleton associated with a transitional industry, the Châtelperronian, whichwas until then attributed to Modern Humans. Discovered in 1976, the site was the subject of severalexcavation campaigns conducted by F. Lévêque from 1977 to 1987 and in 1993 (with an additionalseason led by A. M. Backer in 1997). Since 2013, new excavation campaigns have been conducted,first by F. Bachellerie (UMR 5199-PACEA) for two years, then by I. Crevecoeur (UMR 5199-PACEA)since 2015. The main objectives of the new geoarchaeological investigations are to 1) re-evaluatethe archaeostratigraphic sequence, 2) characterize the geomorphological processes responsible forthe site formation, and 3) evaluate their impact on the archaeological assemblages and their spatialintegrity (taphonomy).Spatial representations and analyses of the Lévêque’s excavation data are an invaluable aidfor evaluating the coherence of the first archaeo-stratigraphy established in the 1970s. A 3Dreconstruction of Lévêque’s spit record stemming from the reassessment of the faunal collection(Rougier et al., In Crevecoeur et al., 2016) was developed for exploratory purposes to evaluate thefeasibility of modeling the data recorded during the first excavations. This visualization, associatedwith calculations of coherence index and similarity index, allows on one hand to understand theinconsistencies of the first described archeo-sequence, and on the other hand, to reveal the spatialorganization of the archaeo-stratigraphical units. To go further, the coherence and similarity indiceswere analyzed according to methods usually used in geography such as the global and local Moranautocorrelation indices. As a result, an interactive visualization application allows researchers toexplore the stratigraphic units spatially as well as on the value of their indices. According to a specificprotocol, all of the piece-plotted objects from Lévêque’s excavations have X, Y and Z coordinates(Lévêque, 2002). Thanks to this precise recording system, supplemented by archaeozoological data(Morin, 2004), a database containing almost 6000 lithic and faunal pieces, with their 3D location,has been produced. Several 2D representations along with spatial analyses (using Getis and Ordindex, hot spots) of all the recorded objects from the Middle-Upper Palaeolithic levels, including theanalysis of the orientation and inclination of the objects (Todisco, 2015), have been computed.These spatial analyses contribute to a better understanding of the general organization of theartifacts / ecofacts of La Roche-à-Pierrot. They will be invaluable in anticipating fieldwork in thecoming years and will be a useful tool for interpreting our observations.

Abstract: International audience; Comet nuclei are remnants from the planet formation era but cannot be observed directly from Earth. When they approach the Sun a cloud of gas dust obscures their nuclei, and their properties must be inferred from gas and dust surrounding them. Understanding the connection between the coma and nucleus is therefore critical. Comet 46P/Wirtanen passed Earth with an historic closest approach distance of 0.077 au (12 million km) on Dec. 16, 2018. Its apparition was widely anticipated by planetary scientists and was the target of a world-wide observing campaign. Studies of comet Wirtanen around the time of its close approach to Earth provided spatial resolutions high enough to permit valuable comparisons to the Rosetta observations of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and the Deep Impact/EPOXI fly-by results of 103P/Hartley 2. In this contribution, we will summarize the preliminary results from our global campaign that combined telescopes in and around Earth to characterize the physical and chemical behavior of comet 46P/Wirtanen.

Abstract: Despite widespread climate-driven reductions of coral cover on tropical reefs, little attention has been paid to the possibility that changes in the geographic distribution of coral recruitment could facilitate beneficial responses to the changing climate through latitudinal range shifts. To address this possibility, we compiled a global database of normalized densities of coral recruits on settlement tiles (corals m^) deployed from 1974 to 2012, and used the data therein to test for latitudinal range shifts in the distribution of coral recruits. In total, 92 studies provided 1253 records of coral recruitment, with 77% originating from settlement tiles immersed for 3-24 mo, herein defined as long-immersion tiles (LITs); the limited temporal and geographic coverage of data from short-immersion tiles (SITs; deployed for 20° latitude). These trends indicate that a global decline in coral recruitment has occurred since 1974, and the persistent reduction in the densities of recruits in equatorial latitudes, coupled with increased densities in sub-tropical latitudes, suggests that coral recruitment may be shifting poleward., 論文

Abstract: International audience; The concept of smart cities has gained significant momentum in science and policy circles over the past decade. This study aims to provide an overview of the structure and trends in the literature on smart cities. Bibliometric analysis and science mapping techniques using VOSviewer and CiteSpace are used to identify the thematic focus of over 5000 articles indexed in the Web of Science since 1991. In addition to providing insights into the thematic evolution of the field, the three-decade study period is divided into two sub-periods (1991–2015 and 2016–2021). While splitting the dataset into more sub-periods would have been desirable, we decided to only examine two sub-periods as only very few papers have been published until 2010. The annual number of publications has progressively increased since then, with a surge in the annual number of publications observable from 2015 onwards. The thematic analysis showed that the intellectual base of the field has been very limited during the first period, but has expanded significantly since 2015. Over time, some thematic evolutions, such as further attention to linkages to climate change and resilience, and more emphasis on security and privacy issues, have been made. The thematic analysis shows that existing research on smart cities is dominated by either conceptual issues or underlying technical aspects. It is, therefore, essential to do more research on the implementation of smart cities and actual and/or potential contributions of smart cities to solving societal issues. In addition to elaborating on thematic focus, the study also highlights major authors, journals, references, countries, and institutions that have contributed to the development of the smart cities literature.

Abstract: Recent studies have shown that the power consumption of a wake-up receiver can be reduced by using an envelope detector as its first stage. Designing a low power envelope detector is challenging because of stringent requirements such as data rate, operating frequency, conversion gain and sensitivity. This paper describes the design of a 915 MHz envelope detector which uses a combination of active inductors and an input matching circuit to improve its conversion gain. The proposed design consumes 2 $\mu \mathrm{A}$ of bias current, achieves a 37.8 dB of conversion gain, a sensitivity of -60 dBm and a data rate of 200 kb/s in a 0.13 $\mu \mathrm{m}$ CMOS process.

In this paper, we explore challenges associated with designing a low-power active inductor. We focus in particular on sizing issues that arise as the transistor speed is maximized and the current consumption is minimized. Finally, we apply the results to design an amplifier integrated with an active inductor in $$0.18\,\upmu \hbox{m}$$ CMOS process and show that by systematically working through sizing issues, a $$10\,\upmu \hbox{A}$$ sub GHz amplifier can be designed.

Abstract: Worldwide, coral reef ecosystems are experiencing increasing pressure from a variety of anthropogenic perturbations including ocean warming and acidification, increased sedimentation, eutrophication, and overfishing, which could shift reefs to a condition of net calcium carbonate (CaCO3) dissolution and erosion. Herein, we determine the net calcification potential and the relative balance of net organic carbon metabolism (net community production; NCP) and net inorganic carbon metabolism (net community calcification; NCC) within 23 coral reef locations across the globe. In light of these results, we consider the suitability of using these two metrics developed from total alkalinity (TA) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) measurements collected on different spatiotemporal scales to monitor coral reef biogeochemistry under anthropogenic change. All reefs in this study were net calcifying for the majority of observations as inferred from alkalinity depletion relative to offshore, although occasional observations of net dissolution occurred at most locations. However, reefs with lower net calcification potential (i.e., lower TA depletion) could shift towards net dissolution sooner than reefs with a higher potential. The percent influence of organic carbon fluxes on total changes in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) (i.e., NCP compared to the sum of NCP and NCC) ranged from 32% to 88% and reflected inherent biogeochemical differences between reefs. Reefs with the largest relative percentage of NCP experienced the largest variability in seawater pH for a given change in DIC, which is directly related to the reefs ability to elevate or suppress local pH relative to the open ocean. This work highlights the value of measuring coral reef carbonate chemistry when evaluating their susceptibility to ongoing global environmental change and offers a baseline from which to guide future conservation efforts aimed at preserving these valuable ecosystems.

Abstract: International audience; Very high resolution (VHR) airborne data enable detection and physical measurements of individual coral reef colonies. The bathymetric LiDAR system, as an active remote sensing technique, accurately computes the coral reef ecosystem’s surface and reflectance using a single green wavelength at the decimetre scale over 1-to-100 km2 areas. A passive multispectral camera mounted on an airborne drone can build a blue-green-red (BGR) orthorectified mosaic at the centimetre scale over 0.01-to-0.1 km2 areas. A combination of these technologies is used for the first time here to map coral reef ecological state at the submeter scale. Airborne drone BGR values (0.03 m pixel size) serve to calibrate airborne bathymetric LiDAR surface and intensity data (0.5 m pixel size). A classification of five ecological states is then mapped through an artificial neural network (ANN). The classification was developed over a small area (0.01 km2) in the lagoon of Moorea Island (French Polynesia) at VHR (0.5 m pixel size) and then extended to the whole lagoon (46.83 km2). The ANN was first calibrated with 275 samples to determine the class of coral state through LiDAR-based predictors; then, the classification was validated through 135 samples, reaching a satisfactory performance (overall accuracy = 0.75).

Abstract: Using model calculations, we demonstrate a very high level of control of the spin-transfer torque (STT) by electric field in multiferroic tunnel junctions with composite dielectric/ferroelectric barriers. We find that, for particular device parameters, toggling the polarization direction can switch the voltage-induced part of STT between a finite value and a value close to zero, i.e. quench and release the torque. Additionally, we demonstrate that under certain conditions the zero-voltage STT, i.e. the interlayer exchange coupling, can switch sign with polarization reversal, which is equivalent to reversing the magnetic ground state of the tunnel junction. This bias- and polarization-tunability of the STT could be exploited to engineer novel functionalities such as softening/hardening of the bit or increasing the signal-to-noise ratio in magnetic sensors, which can have important implications for magnetic random access memories or for combined memory and logic devices.

Abstract: Current research on coral reefs seeks to link the responses to anthropogenic stressors (such as global warming and ocean acidification [OA]) among differing functional levels of biological organization. While experimental studies have identified ex situ taxon-specific responses to OA and global warming, isolating and connecting these effects in situ at the community-level has proved difficult. The difficulties arise from the large number of naturally varying parameters affecting corals reefs, such as light intensity and seawater residence time that affect net community production and calcification. To control variation in seawater residence time and allow light intensity to vary naturally, experimental outer reef (17-m depth) benthic communities composed of calcified algae, corals, and reef pavement were constructed in large outdoor flumes in Mo'orea, French Polynesia. Net community production (P), net community calcification (G), the ratio of P/G (P/G(ratio)), and slope of P regressed on G (P/G(slope)) were calculated for the communities, and concurrently for the constituent members under the same temperature, light, and flow conditions. P and G, for both the communities and constituent members, were correlated positively with light intensity, whereas P/G(rati)o and P/G(siope) were unaffected by light intensity. P/G(ratios) and P/G(siopes) exhibited values that were specific to each community member. These results suggest that the P/G(ratio) and P/G(slope) may be unaffected by natural variability in light intensity and could serve as useful metrics to relate responses at the taxon and community level, which is an important step in assessing the effects of environmental changes on coral reefs.

Abstract: Aim: There is global consensus that marine protected areas offer a plethora of benefits to the biodiversity within and around them. Nevertheless, many organisms threatened by human impacts also find shelter in unexpected or informally protected places. For coral reef organisms, refuges can be tourist resorts implementing local environment-friendly bottom-up management strategies. We used the coral reef ecosystem as a model to test whether such practices have positive effects on the biodiversity associated with de facto protected areas. Location: North Ari Atoll, Maldives. Methods: We modelled the effects of the environment and three human management regimes (tourist resorts, uninhabited and local community islands) on the abundance and diversity of echinoderms and commercially important fish species, the per cent cover of reef benthic organisms (corals, calcareous coralline algae, turf and macroalgae) and the proportion of coral disease. We used multivariate techniques to assess the differences between reef components among the management regimes. Results: Reefs varied between the management regimes. A positive “resort effect” was found on sessile benthic organisms, with good coral cover and significantly less algae at resort islands. Corals were larger and had fewer diseases in uninhabited islands. Minor “resort effect” was detected on motile species represented by commercial fish and echinoderms. Main conclusions: In countries where natural biodiversity strongly sustains the tourist sector and where local populations rely on natural resources, a balance between tourism development, local extraction practices and biodiversity conservation is necessary. The presence of eco-friendly managed resorts, which practices would need to be certified on the long term, is beneficial to protect certain organisms. House reefs around resorts could therefore provide areas adding to existing marine protected areas, while marine protection efforts in local community islands should focus on improving fishing management.

Abstract: International audience; We investigate the role of gender in the perceptions of and motives for luxury brandconsumption. Based on the Social Structural Theory of gender, we propose that differences inmen’s and women’s luxury values result from asymmetries in social status. We conduct threestudies with samples of frequent luxury brand buyers. Study 1 (N = 512) generates main valuesassociated with luxury brand consumption. Study 2 (N = 640) identifies a four-factor model ofluxury brand values, including refinement, heritage, exclusivity, and elitism, and shows thatwomen give more importance to refinement, while men give more importance to exclusivity andelitism. Study 3 (N = 1,024) demonstrates that public self-consciousness has a stronger positiveinfluence on refinement for women rather than men. In contrast, consumer need for uniquenessand status consumption exert respectively a stronger positive influence on exclusivity and elitismfor men rather than women. © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Abstract: International audience; Criticisms of patent laws for technological innovations in the United States reveal a multifaceted milieu of problems centered around the protection of short-term economic gain and individual property rights. In this article, we consider this a conflict between current patent laws and the innovation capabilities of organizations. We propose a solution that enables the company to assure its long-term survival in the face of these restrictions. This presumes that the firm will at least maintain its innovation capacities while preserving the company's ethical values and those of its social environment. We offer a theoretical model that is designed to help managers and policymakers reorient their governance strategies for managing the innovation process, using the “ethics of responsibility,” which establishes the link to individual moral values at the beginning of a governance process as well as the consequences of a decision. Our integrated causal model of ethical innovation for patents is presented and implications for global organizations and possible solutions for patent law process failure are offered.

Abstract: International audience; The characterization of the Fréchet derivative of the elasto-acoustic scattered field with respect to Lipschitz continuous polygonal domains is established. The considered class of domains is of practical interest since two-dimensional scatterers are always transformed into polygonal-shaped domains when employing finite element methods for solving direct and inverse scattering problems. The obtained result indicates that the Fréchet derivative with respect to the scatterer of the scattered field is the solution of the same elasto-acoustic scattering problem but with additional right-hand side terms in the transmission conditions across the fluid-structure interface. This characterization has the potential to advance the state-of-the-art of the solution of inverse obstacle problems.

We also characterize norm-stable invariant subspaces of any weighted unilateral shift operator. We show that quasianalytic shift operators are points of norm continuity of the lattice of the invariant subspaces. We also provide a necessary condition for strongly stable invariant subspaces for certain operators.

Abstract: The interaction potentials of the He2* excimer, in the a3Σu, b3Πg, c3Σg, and d3Σu electronic states with a ground state helium atom are presented. The symmetry of the interaction potentials closely follows the excimer Rydberg electron density with pronounced short-range minima appearing along the nodal planes of the Rydberg orbital. In such cases, a combination of the electrostatic short-range attraction combined with Pauli repulsion leads to the appearance of unusual long-range maxima in the potentials. Bosonic density functional calculations show that the 3d state excimer resides in a localized solvation bubble in dense helium at 4.5 K, with radii varying from 12.7 A at 0.1 MPa to 10.8 A at 2.4 MPa. The calculated 3d → 3b pressure-induced fluorescence band shifts are in good agreement with experimental results determined by application of corona discharge. Abstract: International audience; There are concerns about the future of coral reefs in the face of ocean acidification and warming, and although studies of these phenomena have advanced quickly, efforts have focused on pieces of the puzzle rather than integrating them to evaluate ecosystem-level effects. The field is now poised to begin this task, but there are information gaps that first must be overcome before progress can be made. Many of these gaps focus on calcification at the levels of cells, organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystem, and their closure will be made difficult by the complexity of the interdependent processes by which coral reefs respond to ocean acidification, with effects scaling from cells to ecosystems and from microns to kilometers. Existing ecological theories provide an important and largely untapped resource for overcoming these difficulties, and they offer great potential for integrating the effects of ocean acidification across scales on coral reefs.

Abstract: The response of tropical corals and calcifying algae to ocean acidification (OA) and warming has received much attention in the past decade. However, most studies have evaluated the response of organisms to two or three temperature treatments, which does not allow the functional relationship between calcification and temperature under ambient and future pCO(2) to be determined. This study tested the hypothesis that the relationship between calcification and temperature is affected by OA in the coral Acropora pulchra and the calcified alga Lithophyllum kotschyanum. Pieces of each organism were incubated under five (24-30 A degrees C) or six (24-31.5 A degrees C) temperatures crossed with two pCO(2) levels (400 and 1000 mu atm), and calcification was assessed in trials conducted in the spring and summer. The response of coral calcification to temperature was a positive asymmetric parabola with a maximum at similar to 28 A degrees C under both pCO(2) levels and in both seasons; the effects of pCO(2) on calcification were largest at similar to 28 A degrees C and lowest in both cool and warm temperatures. In contrast, calcification of the alga at both levels of pCO(2) was unaffected by temperature in spring, but declined linearly with temperature in summer. This study demonstrates that the calcification response of coral reef organisms to the crossed effect of warming and OA is complex and cannot be fully assessed without using multiple temperature treatments that are ecologically relevant.

We prove that these reflected modes decay exponentially in the high frequency regime. This theoretical result demonstrates the great potential of the considered absorbing boundary condition for solving efficiently exterior high-frequency Helmholtz problems. In addition, this exponential decay proves the superiority of DtN2 over the widely used Bayliss-Gunsburger-Turkel absorbing boundary condition.

Abstract: International audience; This study examines when established firms participate in corporate venture capital (CVC). We build on the resource-based view of interfirm collaboration and emphasize the strategic flexibility of CVC relationships. We use longitudinal data on 477 firms from 1990 to 2000 to test our hypotheses. We find that firms in industries with rapid technological change, high competitive intensity and weak appropriability engage in greater CVC activity. We also show that firms that possess strong technological and marketing resources and resources developed from diverse venturing experience engage in greater CVC activity. Finally, we find that these firm resources moderate the influence of the observed industry effects in paradoxical ways.

Abstract: We propose a three-step solution methodology to increase the discrete set of acoustic far-field pattern (FFP) measurements, available in a small range of observation angles (small aperture). The first two steps of the proposed procedure allow the extension of the data to an aperture larger than π/2. They use a regularized Newton algorithm where the total variation of the FFP is incorporated as a regularization term. The third step consists in applying the standard Tikhonov regularization technique to recover the full aperture of the FFP from the previously extended field. Numerical results obtained using synthetic data illustrate the potential of the proposed procedure for reconstructing the full aperture of the FFP from data given in an aperture as small as backscattering measurements.

Abstract: International audience; The game of nim, with its simple rules, its elegant solution and its historical importance is the quintessence of a combinatorial game, which is why it led to so many generalizations and modifications. We present a modification with a new spin: building nim. With given finite numbers of tokens and stacks, this two-player game is played in two stages (thus belonging to the same family of games as e.g. nine-men’s morris): first building, where players alternate to put one token on one of the, initially empty, stacks until all tokens have been used. Then, the players play nim. Of course, because the solution for the game of nim is known, the goal of the player who starts nim play is a placement of the tokens so that the Nim-sum of the stack heights at the end of building is different from 0. This game is trivial if the total number of tokens is odd as the Nim-sum could never be 0, or if both the number of tokens and the number of stacks are even, since a simple mimicking strategy results in a Nim-sum of 0 after each of the second player’s moves. We present the solution for this game for some non-trivial cases and state a general conjecture.

Abstract: International audience; We continue our efforts on modeling of the population dynamics of herbivorous insects in order to develop and implement effective pest control protocols. In the context of inverse problems, we explore the dynamic effects of pesticide treatments on Lygus hesperus, a common pest of cotton in the western United States. Fitting models to field data, we consider model selection for an appropriate mathematical model and corresponding statistical models, and use techniques to compare models. We address the question of whether data, as it is currently collected, can support time-dependent (as opposed to constant) parameter estimates.
