Abstract

The aim of this paper is to reveal the specifics of a perception of calendar time among the Greeks of the 8th century B.C. Through an analysis of iconographic sources and original texts, we have made an attempt to determine the peculiarities in their perception of the flow of time, changing of the seasons, and annual circulation of time. By studying the imagery as it is shown in the pottery decoration of the Protogeometric and Geometric periods, we have come to the conclusion that the symbols depicted in it were reflected in the representations about calendar time as connected to the natural environment and alteration in the surrounding space in accordance with the annual changes in nature. Abstract

Accurately estimating the state of health (SOH) of a lithium-ion battery is significant for electronic devices. To solve the nonlinear degradation problem of lithium-ion batteries (LIB) caused by capacity regeneration, this paper proposes a new LIB degradation model and improved particle filter algorithm for LIB SOH estimation. Firstly, the degradation process of LIB is divided into the normal degradation stage and the capacity regeneration stage. A multi-stage prediction model (MPM) based on the calendar time of the LIB is proposed. Furthermore, the genetic algorithm is embedded into the standard particle filter to increase the diversity of particles and improve prediction accuracy. Finally, the method is verified with the LIB dataset provided by the NASA Ames Prognostics Center of Excellence. The experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper can effectively improve the accuracy of capacity prediction.

Abstract

The Eastern Slavic rusalki are feminine mythological beings commonly associated with water, death, and sexuality. They have been thoroughly ethnographically described, classified and compared. This paper presents a re-evaluation of D. K. Zelenin’s classic interpretation of these beings as the souls of women deceased by untimely or unjust death. By means of analysis of their function and embedding in the entire social-cultural environment, it is shown how rusalki make sense in the symbolic system of East Slavic folklore. One of the main goals is to understand how intricately are rusalki and stories about them connected with the Orthodox liturgical year, specifically with the week following Pentecost. The paper concludes that these feminine revenants are symbolic representation of an eternal unripenness, which needed to be annually revived temporarily in order to help the symbolic system to cross the liminal phase of the agricultural and liturgical year cycle.

Abstract

This paper revisits the controversial question of whether long-run abnormal returns are associated with major corporate events. Our analyses investigate initial public offerings (IPOs), seasoned equity offerings (SEOs), mergers and acquisitions (M&As), and dividend initiations. In an attempt to resolve ambiguous empirical evidence with respect to these events, we conduct a variety of tests for abnormal long-run performance, including buy-and-hold returns (BHARs), different calendar time approaches, and a recent standardized test. Empirical tests for these different methods consistently detect significant long-run abnormal returns for all four corporate events. We conclude that long-run abnormal returns exist with respect to these major corporate actions.

A weighted, random sample of 1500 records from each quarter of the one-year observation period was reviewed by study personnel to confirm active COVID-19 infection at the time of diagnosis and classify reasons for false positive records. PPV was estimated overall and compared across clinical setting and quarters.Results: We identified 664,406 records of U07.1. Among the 1500 reviewed, 237 were false positives (PPV: 84.2%, 95% CI: 82.4– 86.0). PPV ranged from 77.7% in outpatient settings to 93.8% in inpatient settings and was 83.3% in quarter 1, 80.5% in quarter 2, 86.1% in quarter 3, and 83.6% in quarter 4. The most common reasons for false positive records were history of COVID-19 (44.3%) and orders for laboratory tests (21.5%).Conclusion: The PPV of ICD-10 code U07.1 is low, especially in outpatient settings. Directed training may improve accuracy of coding to levels that are deemed adequate for future use in surveillance efforts.Keywords: SARS CoV-2, validation, administrative codes, electronic health records

34. Calendar time as an instrumental variable in assessing the risk of heart failure with antihyperglycemic drugs.

Abstract

Objective: In recent years, second-line diabetes treatment with dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i) increased with a corresponding decrease in thiazolidinediones (TZDs). Using hospitalization for heart failure (HF) as a positive control outcome, we explored the use of calendar time as an instrumental variable (IV) and compared this approach to an active comparator new-user study. Methods: We identified DPP-4i or TZD initiators after a 6-month washout using Medicare claims 2006-2013. The IV was defined as a binary variable comparing initiators during October 2010 to December 2013 (postperiod) versus January 2008 to May 2010 (preperiod). We examined IV strength and estimated risk differences (RDs) for HF using Kaplan-Meier curves, which were compared with propensity score (PS)-weighted RD for DPP-4i versus TZD. Results: The IV compared 22 696 initiators (78% DPP-4i) in the postperiod versus 20 283 initiators (38% DPP-4i) in the preperiod, resulting in 40% compliance. The active-comparator (PS-weighted) approach compared 26 198 DPP-4i and 18 842 TZD initiators. Covariate balance across IV levels was slightly better than across treatments (standardized difference, 3% vs 4.5%). The 1- and 2-year local average treatment effects of RD of HF per 100 patients in the "compliers" (95% confidence intervals) were -0.62 (-0.99 to -0.25) and -0.88 (-1.46 to -0.25). Corresponding PS-weighted results were -0.20 (-0.33 to -0.05) and -0.18 (-0.30 to 0.03). Conclusion: Both approaches indicated lesser risk of HF hospitalizations among DPP-4i vs TZD initiators. The magnitude of the estimated effects may differ due to differences in the target populations and assumptions.
