From an ecological dynamics perspective, careful manipulation of task constraints can provide opportunities for action, exploited by functional movement variability of participants. The constraints-led approach (CLA) induces functional movement variability in practice designs, supporting athlete performance in satisfying task constraints and finding performance solutions to achieve intended task goals. Young male volleyball players were randomly assigned to either a traditional approach (TA) or CLA practice group. Selected spatial-temporal movement coordination variables were recorded, to explore their relations to successful performance outcomes in the attacking phase. Binomial logistic regression was used to verify the association of spatial-temporal movement variables with the percentage of successful attacks. Six spatial-temporal variables were included, and a manual backward stepwise regression was used to remove those which did not contribute to the best predictive model of successful performance. After a 6-week intervention programme, the CLA practice group displayed a significantly higher percentage of successful attack actions, when facing the opposition block. The TA group showed a small increase in successful attack actions after the intervention. The final binomial logistic regression model revealed that the variables 'lateral deviation of the participants' centre of mass' at the planting step and 'longitudinal deviation of the participants' centre of mass' at point of ball contact were the main predictors of successful attacking outcomes. To overcome the opposition's block in volleyball, infusing functional variability in a CLA task design, promoted superior performance in practice. Presumably, greater movement pattern variability emerged in participants to satisfy performance constraints in successful volleyball attacks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

IN SURVIVAL AFTER CORRECTIVE SURGERY - Genetic improvement for dairy production has been constant over the last few years, which has led to a preference for animals with a great digestive capacity and greater body depth. Abomasal displacement is the most frequent abomasal disorder and represents the most usual reason for abdominal surgery in dairy cattle, especially high production cows. The etiology of abomasal displacement is considered multifactorial, with gas accumulation and distension of the organ due to abomasal hypomotility or atony being prerequisites for its occurrence. This disease presents high economic losses, as there are costs with treatments, decrease in milk production, weight loss, increase in the interval between calving, discarding of milk or even the death or slaughter of the animal. Calving is the condition that most often predisposes to left abomasal displacement. Ketosis and other metabolic diseases also present a positive correlation with the occurrence of this disease. The treatment can be divided into clinical and surgical treatment. The objective of the clinical treatment is the restoration of abomasal motility, so that it is possible to expel the gas inside the organ. This type of treatment is only indicated in cases where the animals do not present systemic clinical signs, but it presents a high rate of recurrence. Surgical treatment has the function of restoring the organ to its correct anatomical position and creating a permanent fixation. It can be divided into two major groups: closed or minimally invasive methods, and open or invasive methods. The study included 26 animals from a farm in the municipality of Moita. Of these animals only 2 (7.7%) did not survive within 10 days after the corrective surgery. Regarding the period of 90 days after surgery, 4 cows (15.4%) did not survive. The animals included in this study had a mean age of 3.11 years, one lactation, a mean calving interval of 470 days, a mean body condition of 3.25, a mean serum BHB of 1.25 mmol/L and a mean abomasal fluid pH of 2.5. No statistically relevant correlation was found among the studied parameters such as BHB serum levels, calving interval, body condition, and pH of the abomasum liquid N/A

The aim of this thesis was to research the Constraints-led Approach (CLA) and synergetic behaviour in volleyball performance. Grounded on ecological dynamics framework we researched theoretically concepts related to individual and collective synergetic behaviour and experimentally implemented the CLA with volleyball teams. First, we presented a narrative review on the principles of CLA and nonlinear pedagogy providing two practical examples to apply to the sub-phase of volleyball attack. Next, we advanced a position statement and a novel hypothesis on the crucial role of biotensegrity structures in individual and collective coordinative structurers (i.e., synergies). In the experimental studies we implemented CLA to guide the performers trough the phases of “Search”, “Discover” and “Exploit”. First, with a team of young female volleyball players we manipulate task constraints to accommodate individual differences and compare spike accuracy after training as well as understand time strategies in the coordinative structure of the horizontal approach. Results show that accommodating individual differences enhances performance (i.e., spike accuracy) and freezing degrees of freedom maintaining high variability in a component of the coordinative structure of the horizontal approach was the strategy of movement re-organization associated with higher spike accuracy. Next, we implemented a study with expert female volleyball players to compare frequencies of defensive ball contacts between real game, traditional defense strategy and “online” attunement to specifying variables. Additionally, we measure group synchronization in successful and unsuccessful defense situations. Results show that collectively attuning to relevant information promotes significant higher frequencies of defense ball contact than pre-determined strategies of action and successful defensive plays are associated with “online” significant changes in group synchronization. Finally, with young male elite volleyball players we aimed to compare the effects of training based on CLA principles to a traditional approach on attack performance. Also, aimed to predict what spatial temporal variables were exploited by the players to achieve successful attacks. Results showed a significant improvement in attack performance for CLA, and we found that variability at the end of the planting step and consistency at ball contact increased the chances of a successful attack.

- Abstract
Promoting adherence to exercise, especially in a long-term, remains a critical issue in fitness and wellness (F&W) context. SelfDetermination Theory (SDT) and Non-Linear Pedagogy (NLP) have progressively established themselves as valid backgrounds for intervention in F&W context. Analysing the assumptions of both, seems to reveal points of contact and complementarities yet to be explored through experimental research. Autonomy, competence and relatedness are basic psychological needs (BPN) that motivational strategies based on SDT seek to satisfy, aiming autonomous self-regulation for exercise. NLP practice is centered in the performerenvironment system exhibiting tasks that should be representative of the context of performance with adaptive variability; tasks should be simplified rather than decomposed. Task, individual and environmental constraints are considered and manipulated to guide the performer through a learning process according to the individual differences, promoting cooperation and stimulating decision. Research has demonstrated the determining importance of the type of exercise professionals’ motivational practices, leading to a positive or negative impact on practitioners. These strategies may involve the diagnostic of action capabilities, and the use of Motivational Interview (MI) principles to facilitate the goal-setting process, manipulating task constraints, and using instructions as task constraints. The purpose of this manuscript is to discuss possibilities on how NLP can target autonomous motivation, based on SDT, resulting in a landscape of affordances for exercise and daily activities that promote autonomous motivation in the F&W context. To our better knowledge, NLP has never been considered neither in the scope of F&W, or as a facilitator of autonomous motivation., Promover la adhesión al ejercicio, es un problema en la condición física y bienestar (CF&B).

In recent years, several papers described the use of GTO's in zero current switching (ZCS) applications, with the goal of increasing the frequency range for medium- and high-power converters. Zero current switching with GTO's can be applied in series and parallel resonant converters, as well as in PWM inverters with commutation aid networks. The voltage and current waveforms at the devices differ in each of these applications, and different modes of ZCS can be identified. In this paper, a comparative view of the behavior and characteristics of the GTO in the different modes of ZCS is presented. The variety of ZCS waveforms is described and transferred into a unifying schematic. The behavior of GTO's in the different modes of operation is characterized, and requirements to the circuit environment are pointed out. The relations between the most important circuit parameters and some of the device waveform parameters are investigated experimentally.

In this paper a new superconductive magnetic energy storage (SMES) system utilizing a high-frequency series resonant dc link power converter of high efficiency as the conditioning converter is presented. This system generates a high-frequency (20 kHz or more) resonant current in a series link and switching is done at zero current instants, reducing switching losses to a minimal value. Through the utilization of an adequate control strategy, the input power factor can be fully adjusted during the charging, storing, and discharging modes of the SMES, improving the overall system efficiency. Different semiconductor devices are employed as the switching elements of the resonant converter and switching losses are established for each case. Experimental results from a monophase and three-phase system verified the results obtained from digital simulation.

The interest in this theme occurs due to the fact that we know that the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives can have favorable tax impacts in the sponsors’ context, so a CSR project from SONAE was chosen to carry out a study. Thus, this work has as main objective to determine, in the perception of the consumers, what were the motivations of SONAE to “sponsor” the project “The book of the better family recipes”; a questionnaire was applied on a sample of clients of the «Continente Hypermarket». The statistical treatment of the data collected showed that the majority of respondents consider CSR as a way to contribute to the development of the economy, improving the quality of life of workers and society in general. In addition, they consider that SONAE's main motivations for “patronizing” this cause are to strengthen of the image and business reputation, as well as to take advantage of the tax benefits associated, from which about half of the respondents were unaware that SONAE could benefit from them, however, even though they considered this to be unacceptable, a considerable number of respondents stated that they would continue to buy the book, supporting this cause

Background and aims: Mucosal healing and histological remission are different targets for patients with ulcerative colitis, but both rely on an invasive endoscopic procedure. This study aimed to assess faecal calprotectin and neutrophil gelatinase B–associated lipocalin as biomarkers for disease activity in asymptomatic ulcerative colitis patients. Methods: This was a multicentric cross-sectional study including 371 patients, who were classified according to their endoscopic and histological scores. These results were evaluated alongside the faecal levels of both biomarkers. Results: Macroscopic lesions [i.e. endoscopic Mayo score ≥1] were present in 28% of the patients, and 9% had active disease according to fht Ulcerative Colitis Endoscopic Index of Severity. Moreover, 21% presented with histological inflammation according to the Geboes index, whereas 15% and 5% presented with focal and diffuse basal plasmacytosis, respectively. The faecal levels of calprotectin and neutrophil gelatinase B–associated lipocalin were statistically higher for patients with endoscopic lesions and histological activity. A receiver operating characteristic–based analysis revealed that both biomarkers were able to indicate mucosal healing and histological remission with an acceptable probability, and cut-off levels of 150–250 μg/g for faecal calprotectin and 12 μg/g for neutrophil gelatinase B–associated lipocalin were proposed. Conclusions: Faecal calprotectin and neutrophil gelatinase B–associated lipocalin levels are a valuable addition for assessment of disease activity in asymptomatic ulcerative colitis patients. Biological levels of the analysed biomarkers below the proposed thresholds can rule out the presence of macroscopic and microscopic lesions with a probability of 75–93%. However, caution should be applied whenever interpreting positive results, as these biomarkers present consistently low positive predictive values. * Abbreviations: : 5-ASA : 5-aminosalicylic acid or ‘mesalazine' AUC : area under the curve AZT : azathioprine FC : faecal calprotectin IBD : inflammatory bowel disease IBS : irritable bowel syndrome IQR : interquartile range MH : mucosal healing NGAL : neutrophil gelatinase B–associated lipocalin NPV : negative predictive value PPV : positive predictive value ROC : receiver operating characteristic UC : ulcerative colitis UCEIS : Ulcerative Colitis Endoscopic Index of Severity.

- Abstract
Background and Aims The histological status of ulcerative colitis [UC] patients in clinical and endoscopic remission has gained space as an important prognostic marker and a key component of disease monitoring. Our main aims were to compare two histological indexes—the continuous Geboes score [GS] and the Robarts Histopathology index [RHI]—regarding their definitions of histological remission and response, and the ability of faecal calprotectin [FC] levels to discriminate between these statuses. Methods This was an analysis of three prospective cohorts including 422 patients previously enrolled in other studies. Results The two continuous scores [GS and RHI] were shown to be significantly correlated [correlation coefficient of 0.806, p < 0.001] and particularly close regarding their definition of histological response: 95% and 88% of all patients classified as having/not having [respectively] histological response according to RHI also did so according to GS. Moreover, median FC levels in patients with histological response were lower than those in patients without histological response [GS: 73.00 vs 525.00, p < 0.001; RHI: 73.50 vs 510.00, p < 0.001]; a similar trend was observed when FC levels of patients in histological remission were compared to those of patients with histological activity [GS: 76.00 vs 228.00, p < 0.001; RHI: 73.50 vs 467.00, p < 0.001]. FC levels allowed us to exclude the absence of histological remission [according to RHI] and absence of histological response [according to RHI and GS], with negative predictive values varying from 82% to 96%. However, optimization of the FC cut-off to exclude the absence of histological remission, as for the continuous GS, falls within values that resemble those of the healthy population. Conclusion The continuous GS and RHI histological scores are strongly correlated in their definitions of histological response. An absence of histological remission could only be excluded at physiological levels of FC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disease in which clinical course varies substantially between patients. The extent of the disease is usually pointed out as one of the factors responsible for this variation. With this study, we pretended to evaluate the differences in natural history and pharmacological therapy prescription between left-sided and extended UC.

We report a case of a 63-year-old-man presenting with chronic diarrhea and weight loss while on olmesartan treatment for hypertension. Investigation showed multiple nutritional deficiencies associated with diffuse intestinal villous atrophy. Serologies for celiac disease were negative and other causes of villous atrophy were excluded. Olmesartan as a precipitant agent was suspected and withdrawn. Clinical improvement occurred in days with no need for other therapeutic measures. Follow-up at three months showed clinical remission and almost complete recovery of intestinal atrophy. Olmesartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker commonly prescribed for the management of hypertension. Spruelike enteropathy associated with this drug is a recently described entity with few cases reported. It presents with chronic diarrhea and intestinal villous atrophy and should be included in its differential diagnosis. This case intends to alert clinicians for the possibility of this event in a patient on treatment with this drug. A investigação complementar mostrou múltiplos défices nutricionais associados a atrofia vilositária intestinal difusa.
