Abstract

The discovery of graphing calculators is analogous to the arrival of compact discs (CDs) in the audio equipment industry. The vinyl record, which was not replaced by several new inventions in the music industry such as the 8-track tape, cassette tape and laser disc, was replaced by the CD as it possessed several advantages. The conventional method of teaching mathematics by manual computing is now being replaced by the graphing calculator. The graphing calculator enables the students to perceive, model and visualize the abstract ideas encountered in mathematics.
