Stellar mass black holes in the disks around active galactic nuclei (AGN) are promising sources for gravitational wave detections by LIGO/VIRGO. Recent studies suggest this environment fosters the formation and merger of binary black holes. Many of these studies often assumed a simple, laminar AGN disk without magnetic fields or turbulence. In this work, we present the first 3D magnetohydrodynamical simulations of circum-single disks around isolated and binary black holes in strongly magnetized, stratified accretion disks with turbulence driven by magneto-rotational instability. We simulated three scenarios with varying initial net-vertical magnetic field strengths: weak, intermediate, and strong. Our results show that weakly magnetized models produce circum-single disks aligned with the AGN disk's equatorial plane, similar to past hydrodynamic simulations. However, intermediate and strong magnetic fields result in randomly misaligned disks, contingent upon the availability of local ambient angular momentum within turbulent regions. Our findings emphasize the significant impact of ambient gas in the AGN disk on the inclination of circum-single disks, linked to magnetically induced inhomogeneity and angular momentum during disk formation. The presence of misaligned disks, both in single and binary black hole systems, could have profound implications for the long-term evolution of black hole spin and the inclination of the disk at the horizon scale., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Kinematic studies of protoplanetary discs are a valuable method for uncovering hidden companions. In the first paper of this series, we presented five morphological and kinematic criteria that aid in asserting the binary nature of a protoplanetary disc. In this work we study the kinematic signatures of circumbinary discs in the residuals of their velocity maps. We show that Doppler-flips, spiral arms, eccentric gas motion, fast flows inside of the cavity, and vortex-like kinematic signatures are commonly observed. Unlike in the planetary mass companion case, Doppler-flips in circumbinary discs are not necessarily centred on a companion, and can extend towards the cavity edge. We then compare the kinematic signatures in our simulations with observations and see similarities to the Doppler-flip signal in HD 100546 and the vortex-like kinematic signatures in HD 142527. Our analysis also reveals kinematic evidence for binarity in several protoplantary disks typically regarded as circumstellar rather than circumbinary, including AB Aurigae and HD 100546., Comment: 15 pages, 12 Figures. Binary black holes embedded within the accretion disks that fuel active galactic nuclei (AGN) are promising progenitors for the source of gravitational wave events detected by LIGO/VIRGO. Several recent studies have shown that when these binaries form they should be highly eccentric and retrograde. However, many uncertainties remain concerning the orbital evolution of these binaries as they either inspiral towards merger or disassociate. Previous hydrodynamical simulations exploring their orbital evolution have been predominantly two-dimensional, or have been restricted to binaries on nearly circular orbits. We present the first high-resolution, three-dimensional local shearing-box simulations of both prograde and retrograde eccentric binary black holes embedded in AGN disks. We find that retrograde binaries shrink several times faster than their prograde counterparts and exhibit significant orbital eccentricity growth, the rate of which monotonically increases with binary eccentricity. Our results suggest that retrograde binaries may experience runaway orbital eccentricity growth, which may bring them close enough together at pericenter for gravitational wave emission to drive them to coalescence. Although their eccentricity is damped, prograde binaries shrink much faster than their orbital eccentricity decays, suggesting they should remain modestly eccentric as they contract towards merger. Finally, binary precession driven by the AGN disk may dominate over precession induced by the supermassive black hole depending on the binary accretion rate and its location in the AGN disk, which can subdue the evection resonance and von Ziepel-Lidov-Kozai cycles., Comment: Corrected figures 11, 13

We present five morphological and kinematic criteria to aid in asserting the binary nature of a protoplanetary disc, based on 3D hydrodynamical simulations of circumbinary discs post-processed with Monte Carlo radiative transfer. We find that circumbinary discs may be identified by i) a central cavity, ii) spiral arms both in and outside of their central cavities, iii) non-localised perturbations in their iso-velocity curves, iv) asymmetry between the lines of maximum speed of the blue and red-shifted wings and v) asymmetry between the area of the blue and red-shifted wings. We provide quantitative metrics for the last two criteria that can be used, in conjunction with the morphological criteria, to signal whether a protoplanetary disc is likely to be a circumbinary disc., Comment: 26 pages, 26 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We report kinematic and thermal signatures associated with the directly imaged protoplanet candidate in the Elias 2-24 disc. Using the DSHARP ALMA observations of the $^{12}$CO J=2-1 line, we show that the disc kinematics are perturbed, with a detached CO emission spot at the location of the planet candidate and traces of spiral wakes, and also that the observed CO emission intensities require local heating. While the foreground extinction hides the velocity channels associated with the planet, preventing a planet mass estimate, the level of gas heating implied by the CO emission indicates the presence of a warm, embedded giant planet. Comparison with models show this could either be a $\gtrsim 5$M$_\mathrm{Jup}$, or a lower mass ( $\gtrsim 2$M$_\mathrm{Jup}$) but accreting proto-planet., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We present ALMA band 6 images of the 12CO, 13CO and C18O J=2-1 line emissions for the circumstellar disc around HD 169142, at ~8 au spatial resolution. We resolve a central gas depleted cavity, along with two independent near-symmetric ring-like structures in line emission: a well-defined inner gas ring [~25 au] and a second relatively fainter and diffuse outer gas ring [~65 au]. We identify a localised super-Keplerian feature or vertical flow with a magnitude of ~75m/s in the 12CO map. This feature has the shape of an arc that spans azimuthally across a PA range of ~60 to 45 degrees and radially in between the B1[26au] and B2[59au] dust rings. Through reconstruction of the gas surface density profile, we find that the magnitude of the background perturbations by the pressure support and self-gravity terms are not significant enough to account for the kinematic excess. If of planetary origin, the relative depletion in the gas-density profile would suggest a 1 Mj planet. In contrast, the central cavity displays relatively smooth kinematics, suggesting either a low mass companion and/or a binary orbit with a minimal vertical velocity component.

Companions at sub-arcsecond separation from young stars are difficult to image. However their presence can be inferred from the perturbations they create in the dust and gas of protoplanetary disks. Here we present a new interpretation of SPHERE polarised observations that reveal the previously detected inner spiral in the disk of HD 100546. The spiral coincides with a newly detected 12CO inner spiral and the previously reported CO emission Doppler-flip, which has been interpreted as the signature of an embedded protoplanet. Comparisons with hydrodynamical models indicate that this Doppler-flip is instead the kinematic counterpart of the spiral, which is likely generated by an inner companion inside the disk cavity., Comment: Accepted to ApJL, 14 pages, 10 figures

We present new high-contrast images in near-infrared wavelengths ($\lambda$ = 1.04, 1.24, 1.62, 2.18 and 3.78$\mu$m) of the young variable star CQ Tau, aiming to constrain the presence of companions in the protoplanetary disc. We reached a Ks-band contrast of 14 magnitudes with SPHERE/IRDIS at separations greater than 0."4 from the star. Our mass sensitivity curve rules out giant planets above 4 M$_{\rm Jup}$ immediately outside the spiral arms at $\sim$60 au and above 2-3 M$_{\rm Jup}$ beyond 100 au to 5$\sigma$ confidence assuming hot-start models. We do, however, detect four spiral arms, a double-arc and evidence for shadows in scattered light cast by a misaligned inner disc. Our observations may be explained by an unseen close-in companion on an inclined and eccentric orbit. We test the hypothesis that an embedded giant planet in the IM Lupi protostellar disc can produce velocity kinks seen in CO line observations as well as the spiral arms seen in scattered light and continuum emission. We inject planets into 3D hydrodynamics simulations of IM Lupi, generating synthetic observations using Monte Carlo radiative transfer. We find that an embedded planet of 2-3 times the mass of Jupiter can reproduce non-Keplerian velocity perturbations, or `kinks', in the 12CO J=2-1 channel maps. Such a planet can also explain the spiral arms seen in 1.25mm dust continuum emission and 1.6 micron scattered light images. We show that the wake of the planet can be traced in the observed peak velocity map, which appears to closely follow the morphology expected from our simulations and from analytic models of planet-disc interaction., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted to ApJL. Cosmological analyses with type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) often assume a single empirical relation between color and luminosity ($\beta$) and do not account for varying host-galaxy dust properties. However, from studies of dust in large samples of galaxies, it is known that dust attenuation can vary significantly. Here we take advantage of state-of-the-art modeling of galaxy properties to characterize dust parameters (dust attenuation $A_V$, and a parameter describing the dust law slope $R_V$) for the Dark Energy Survey (DES) SN Ia host galaxies using the publicly available \texttt{BAGPIPES} code. Utilizing optical and infrared data of the hosts alone, we find three key aspects of host dust that impact SN Ia cosmology: 1) there exists a large range ($\sim1-6$) of host $R_V$ 2) high stellar mass hosts have $R_V$ on average $\sim0.7$ lower than that of low-mass hosts 3) there is a significant ($>3\sigma$) correlation between the Hubble diagram residuals of red SNe Ia that when corrected for reduces scatter by $\sim13\%$ and the significance of the ``mass step'' to $\sim1\sigma$. These represent independent confirmations of recent predictions based on dust that attempted to explain the puzzling ``mass step'' and intrinsic scatter ($\sigma_{\rm int}$) in SN Ia analyses. We also find that red-sequence galaxies have both lower and more peaked dust law slope distributions on average in comparison to non red-sequence galaxies. We find that the SN Ia $\beta$ and $\sigma_{\rm int}$ both differ by $>3\sigma$ when determined separately for red-sequence galaxy and all other galaxy hosts. The agreement between fitted host-$R_V$ and SN Ia $\beta$ \& $\sigma_{\rm int}$ suggests that host dust properties play a major role in SN Ia color-luminosity standardization and supports the claim that SN Ia intrinsic scatter is driven by $R_V$ variation., Comment: 22 pages. Contemporary reverberation mapping campaigns are employing wide-area photometric data and high-multiplex spectroscopy to efficiently monitor hundreds of active galactic nuclei (AGN). However, the interaction of the window function(s) imposed by the observation cadence with the reverberation lag and AGN variability time scales (intrinsic to each source over a range of luminosities) impact our ability to recover these fundamental physical properties. Time dilation effects due to the sample source redshift distribution introduces added complexity. We present comprehensive analysis of the implications of observational cadence, seasonal gaps and campaign baseline duration (i.e., the survey window function) for reverberation lag recovery. We find the presence of a significant seasonal gap dominates the efficacy of any given campaign strategy for lag recovery across the parameter space, particularly for those sources with observed-frame lags above 100 days. Using the OzDES survey as a baseline, we consider the implications of this analysis for the 4MOST/TiDES campaign providing concurrent follow-up of the LSST deep-drilling fields, as well as upcoming programs. We conclude that the success of such surveys will be critically limited by the seasonal visibility of some potential field choices, but show significant improvement from extending the baseline. We map the planetary wake associated with the embedded protoplanet creating the CO kink in the disk of HD~163296. We show that the wake can be traced by a series of correlated perturbations in the peak velocity map. The sign change of the perturbations across the disk major axis confirm that the wake induces predominantly radial motion, as predicted by models of planet-disk interaction. These results provide the first direct confirmation of planet wakes generated by Lindblad resonances. Mapping the wake provides a constraint on the disk aspect ratio, which is required to measure the mass of the planet., Comment: 10 Pages, 6 figures. Accepted in ApJL

We present the statistical methods that have been developed to analyse the OzDES reverberation mapping sample. To perform this statistical analysis we have created a suite of customisable simulations that mimic the characteristics of each source in the OzDES sample. These characteristics include: the variability in the photometric and spectroscopic lightcurves, the measurement uncertainties, and the observational cadence. By simulating the sources in the OzDES sample that contain the CIV emission line, we developed a set of criteria that rank the reliability of a recovered time lag depending on the agreement between different recovery methods, the magnitude of the uncertainties, and the rate at which false positives were found in the simulations. These criteria were applied to simulated light curves and these results used to estimate the quality of the resulting Radius-Luminosity relation.We grade the results using three quality levels (gold, silver and bronze). The input slope of the R-L relation was recovered within $1\sigma$ for each of the three quality samples, with the gold standard having the lowest dispersion with a recovered a R-L relation slope of $0.454\pm 0.016$ with an input slope of 0.47. We study the mutual evolution of the orbital properties of high mass ratio, circular, co-planar binaries and their surrounding discs, using 3D Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulations. We investigate the evolution of binary and disc eccentricity, cavity structure and the formation of orbiting azimuthal over-dense features in the disc. Even with circular initial conditions, all discs with mass ratios $q>0.05$ develop eccentricity. We find that disc eccentricity grows abruptly after a relatively long time-scale ($\sim 400\textrm{--}700$ binary orbits), and is associated with a very small increase in the binary eccentricity. When disc eccentricity grows, the cavity semi-major axis reaches values $a_{\rm cav}\approx 3.5\, a_{\rm bin}$. We also find that the disc eccentricity correlates linearly with the cavity size. Viscosity and orbit crossing, appear to be responsible for halting the disc eccentricity growth -- eccentricity at the cavity edge in the range $e_{\rm cav}\sim 0.05\textrm{--} 0.35$. Our analysis shows that the current theoretical framework cannot fully explain the origin of these evolutionary features when the binary is almost circular ($e_{\rm bin}\lesssim 0.01$); we speculate about alternative explanations. As previously observed, we find that the disc develops an azimuthal over-dense feature in Keplerian motion at the edge of the cavity. A low contrast over-density still co-moves with the flow after 2000 binary orbits; such an over-density can in principle cause significant dust trapping, with important consequences for protoplanetary disc observations., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Spiral arms in protoplanetary discs are thought to be linked to the presence of companions. We test the hypothesis that the double spiral arm morphology observed in the transition disc MWC 758 can be generated by an $\approx 10$ M$_{\rm Jup}$ companion on an eccentric orbit internal to the spiral arms. Previous studies on MWC 758 have assumed an external companion. We compare simulated observations from three dimensional hydrodynamics simulations of disc-companion interaction to scattered light, infrared and CO molecular line observations, taking into account observational biases. The inner companion hypothesis is found to explain the double spiral arms, as well as several additional features seen in MWC 758 -- the arc in the northwest, substructures inside the spiral arms, the cavity in CO isotopologues, and the twist in the kinematics. Testable predictions include detection of fainter spiral structure, detection of a point source south-southeast of the primary, and proper motion of the spiral arms., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, resubmitted to MNRAS

In this work we demonstrate that the inner spiral structure observed in AB Aurigae can be created by a binary star orbiting inside the dust cavity. We find that a companion with a mass-ratio of 0.25, semi-major axis of 40 au, eccentricity of 0.5, and inclination of 90{\deg} produces gaseous spirals closely matching the ones observed in $^{12}$CO (2-1) line emission. Based on dust dynamics in circumbinary discs (Poblete, Cuello, and Cuadra 2019), we constrain the inclination of the binary with respect to the circumbinary disc to range between 60{\deg} and 90{\deg}. We predict that the stellar companion is located roughly 0.18 arcsec from the central star towards the east-southeast, above the plane of the disc. Should this companion be detected in the near future, our model indicates that it should be moving away from the primary star at a rate of 6 mas/yr on the plane of the sky. Optical tracking systems typically trade-off between astrometric precision and field-of-view. In this work, we showcase a networked approach to optical tracking using very wide field-of-view imagers that have relatively low astrometric precision on the scheduled OSIRIS-REx slingshot manoeuvre around Earth on September 22nd, 2017. As part of a trajectory designed to get OSIRIS-REx to NEO 101955 Bennu, this flyby event was viewed from 13 remote sensors spread across Australia and New Zealand to promote triangulatable observations. Each observatory in this portable network was constructed to be as lightweight and portable as possible, with hardware based off the successful design of the Desert Fireball Network. Over a 4 hour collection window, we gathered 15,439 images of the night sky in the predicted direction of the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft. Using a specially developed streak detection and orbit determination data pipeline, we detected 2,090 line-of-sight observations. Our fitted orbit was determined to be within about 10~km of orbital telemetry along the observed 109,262~km length of OSIRIS-REx trajectory, and thus demonstrating the impressive capability of a networked approach to SSA.

We test the hypothesis that the disc cavity in the `transition disc' Oph IRS 48 is carved by an unseen binary companion. We use 3D dust-gas smoothed-particle hydrodynamics simulations to demonstrate that marginally coupled dust grains concentrate in the gas over-density that forms in in the cavity around a low binary mass ratio binary. This produces high contrast ratio dust asymmetries at the cavity edge similar to those observed in the disc around IRS 48 and other transition discs. This structure was previously assumed to be a vortex. However, we show that the observed velocity map of IRS 48 displays a peculiar asymmetry that is not predicted by the vortex hypothesis. We show the unusual kinematics are naturally explained by the non-Keplerian flow of gas in an eccentric circumbinary cavity. We further show that perturbations observed in the isovelocity curves of IRS 48 may be explained as the product of the dynamical interaction between the companion and the disc. The presence of a $\sim$0.4 M$_{\odot}$ companion at a $\sim$10 au separation can qualitatively explain these observations. Redshifts have been so easy to measure for so long that we tend to neglect the fact that they too have uncertainties and are susceptible to systematic error. As we strive to measure cosmological parameters to better than 1% it is worth reviewing the accuracy of our redshift measurements. Surprisingly small systematic redshift errors, as low as 0.0001, can have a significant impact on the cosmological parameters we infer, such as $H_0$. Here we investigate an extensive (but not exhaustive) list of ways in which redshift estimation can go systematically astray. We review common theoretical errors, such as adding redshifts instead of multiplying by (1+z); using v=cz; and using only cosmological redshift in the estimates of luminosity and angular-diameter distances. We consider potential observational errors, such as rest wavelength precision, air to vacuum conversion at altitude, and spectrograph wavelength calibration. Finally, we explore physical effects, such as peculiar velocity corrections, galaxy internal velocities, gravitational redshifts, and overcorrecting within a bulk flow. We conclude that it would be quite easy for small systematic redshift errors to have infiltrated our data and be impacting our cosmological results. While it is unlikely that these errors are large enough to resolve the current $H_0$ tension, it remains possible, and redshift accuracy may become a limiting factor in near future experiments. With the enormous efforts going into calibrating the vertical axis of our plots (standard candles, rulers, clocks, and sirens) we argue that it is now worth paying a little more attention to the horizontal axis (redshifts)., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Recent interest in primordial black holes as a possible dark matter candidate has motivated the reanalysis of previous methods for constraining massive astrophysical compact objects in the Milky Way halo and beyond. In order to derive these constraints, a model for the dark matter distribution around the Milky Way must be used. Previous microlensing searches have assumed a semi-isothermal density sphere for this task. We show this model is no longer consistent with data from the Milky Way rotation curve, and test two replacement models, namely NFW and power-law. The power-law model is the most flexible as it can break spherical symmetry, and best fits the data. Thus, we recommend the power-law model as a replacement, although it still lacks the flexibility to fully encapsulate all possible shapes of the Milky Way halo. We then use the power-law model to rederive some previous microlensing constraints in the literature, while propagating the primary halo-shape uncertainties through to our final constraints. Our analysis reveals that the microlensing constraints towards the Large Magellanic Cloud weaken somewhat for MACHO masses around $10\, M_\odot$ when this uncertainty is taken into account, but the constraints tighten at lower masses. Exploring some of the simplifying assumptions of previous constraints we also study the effect of wide mass distributions of compact halo objects, as well as the effect of spatial clustering on microlensing constraints. We find that both effects induce a shift in the constraints towards smaller masses, and can effectively remove the microlensing constraints from $M \sim 1-10 M_\odot$ for certain MACHO populations., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables. A significant challenge facing photometric surveys for cosmological purposes is the need to produce reliable redshift estimates. The estimation of photometric redshifts (photo-zs) has been consolidated as the standard strategy to bypass the high production costs and incompleteness of spectroscopic redshift samples. Training-based photo-z methods require the preparation of a high-quality list of spectroscopic redshifts, which needs to be constantly updated. The photo-z training, validation, and estimation must be performed in a consistent and reproducible way in order to accomplish the scientific requirements. To meet this purpose, we developed an integrated web-based data interface that not only provides the framework to carry out the above steps in a systematic way, enabling the ease testing and comparison of different algorithms, but also addresses the processing requirements by parallelizing the calculation in a transparent way for the user. This framework called the Science Portal (hereafter Portal) was developed in the context the Dark Energy Survey (DES) to facilitate scientific analysis. In this paper, we show how the Portal can provide a reliable environment to access vast data sets, provide validation algorithms and metrics, even in the case of multiple photo-zs methods. It is possible to maintain the provenance between the steps of a chain of workflows while ensuring reproducibility of the results. We illustrate how the Portal can be used to provide photo-z estimates using the DES first year (Y1A1) data. While the DES collaboration is still developing techniques to obtain more precise photo-zs, having a structured framework like the one presented here is critical for the systematic vetting of DES algorithmic improvements and the consistent production of photo-zs in the future DES releases., Comment: The first paper of the series about the DES Science Portal, submitted to the Astronomy & Computing journal. Recent papers have shown that a small systematic redshift shift ($\Delta z\sim 10^{-5}$) in measurements of type Ia supernovae can cause a significant bias ($\sim$1\%) in the recovery of cosmological parameters. Such a redshift shift could be caused, for example, by a gravitational redshift due to the density of our local environment. The sensitivity of supernova data to redshift shifts means supernovae make excellent probes of inhomogeneities. We therefore invert the analysis, and try to diagnose the nature of our local gravitational environment by fitting for $\Delta z$ as an extra free parameter alongside the usual cosmological parameters., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures
