This paper concerns the scattering problem for a nonlinear medium of compact support, $D$, with second-harmonic generation. Such a medium, when probed with monochromatic light beams at frequency $\omega$, generates additional waves at frequency $2\omega$. The response of the medium is governed by a system of two coupled semilinear partial differential equations for the electric fields at frequency $\omega$ and $2\omega$. We investigate whether there are situations in which the generated $2\omega$ wave is localized inside $D$, that is, the nonlinear interaction of the medium with the probing wave is invisible to an outside observer. This leads to the analysis of a semilinear elliptic system formulated in $D$ with non-standard boundary conditions. The analysis presented here sets up a mathematical framework needed to investigate a multitude of questions related to nonlinear scattering with second-harmonic generation.

This paper concerns the analysis of a passive, broadband approximate cloaking scheme for the Helmholtz equation in ${\mathbb R}^d$ for $d=2$ or $d=3$. Using ideas from transformation optics, we construct an approximate cloak by ``blowing up" a small ball of radius $\epsilon>0$ to one of radius $1$. In the anisotropic cloaking layer resulting from the ``blow-up" change of variables, we incorporate a Drude-Lorentz-type model for the index of refraction, and we assume that the cloaked object is a soft (perfectly conducting) obstacle. We first show that (for any fixed $\epsilon$) there are no real transmission eigenvalues associated with the inhomogeneity representing the cloak, which implies that the cloaking devices we have created will not yield perfect cloaking at any frequency, even for a single incident time harmonic wave. Secondly, we establish estimates on the scattered field due to an arbitrary time harmonic incident wave. These estimates show that, as $\epsilon$ approaches $0$, the $L^2$-norm of the scattered field outside the cloak, and its far field pattern, approach $0$ uniformly over any bounded band of frequencies. In other words: our scheme leads to broadband approximate cloaking for arbitrary incident time harmonic waves.

In this paper we examine necessary conditions for an anisotropic inhomogeneous medium to be non-scattering at a single wave number and for a single incident field. These conditions are expressed in terms of the regularity of the boundary of the inhomogeneity. We assume that the coefficients, characterizing the constitutive material properties of the medium, are sufficiently smooth, and the incident wave is appropriately non-degenerate. Our analysis utilizes the Hodograph transform as well as regularity results for nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. Our approach requires that the boundary a-priori is of class $C^{1,\alpha}$ for some $0<\alpha<1$.

In this paper we consider the inverse problem of determining structural properties of a thin anisotropic and dissipative inhomogeneity in ${\mathbb R}^m$, $m=2,3$ from scattering data. In the asymptotic limit as the thickness goes to zero, the thin inhomogeneity is modeled by an open $m-1$ dimensional manifold (here referred to as screen), and the field inside is replaced by jump conditions on the total field involving a second order surface differential operator. We show that all the surface coefficients (possibly matrix valued and complex) are uniquely determined from far field patterns of the scattered fields due to infinitely many incident plane waves at a fixed frequency. Then we introduce a target signature characterized by a novel eigenvalue problem such that the eigenvalues can be determined from measured scattering data, adapting the approach in \cite{Screens}. Changes in the measured eigenvalues are used to identified changes in the coefficients without making use of the governing equations that model the healthy screen. In our investigation the shape of the screen is known, since it represents the object being evaluated. We present some preliminary numerical results indicating the validity of our inversion approach.

Surrogate modeling based on Gaussian processes (GPs) has received increasing attention in the analysis of complex problems in science and engineering. Despite extensive studies on GP modeling, the developments for functional inputs are scarce. Motivated by an inverse scattering problem in which functional inputs representing the support and material properties of the scatterer are involved in the partial differential equations, a new class of kernel functions for functional inputs is introduced for GPs. Based on the proposed GP models, the asymptotic convergence properties of the resulting mean squared prediction errors are derived and the finite sample performance is demonstrated by numerical examples. In the application to inverse scattering, a surrogate model is constructed with functional inputs, which is crucial to recover the reflective index of an inhomogeneous isotropic scattering region of interest for a given far-field pattern.

We investigate an inverse scattering problem for a thin inhomogeneous scatterer in R^m, m = 2,3, which we model as a m-1 dimensional open surface. The scatterer is referred to as a screen. The goal is to design target signatures that are computable from scattering data in order to detect changes in the material properties of the screen. This target signature is characterized by a mixed Steklov eigenvalue problem for a domain whose boundary contains the screen. We show that the corresponding eigenvalues can be determined from appropriately modified scattering data by using the generalized linear sampling method. A weaker justification is provided for the classical linear sampling method. Numerical experiments are presented to support our theoretical results.

In this paper we examine necessary conditions for an inhomogeneity to be non-scattering, or equivalently, by negation, sufficient conditions for it to be scattering. These conditions are formulated in terms of the regularity of the boundary of the inhomogeneity. We examine broad classes of incident waves in both two and three dimensions. Our analysis is greatly influenced by the analysis carried out by Williams [28] in order to establish that a domain, which does not possess the Pompeiu Property, has a real analytic boundary. That analysis, as well as ours, relies crucially on classical free boundary regularity results due to Kinderlehrer and Nirenberg [18], and Caffarelli [6].

In this paper, we establish the discreteness of transmission eigenvalues for Maxwell's equations. More precisely, we show that the spectrum of the transmission eigenvalue problem is discrete, if the electromagnetic parameters $\eps, \, \mu, \, \heps, \, \hmu$ in the equations characterizing the inhomogeneity and background, are smooth in some neighborhood of the boundary, isotropic on the boundary, and satisfy the conditions $\eps \neq \heps$, $\mu \neq \hmu$, and $\eps/ \mu \neq \heps/ \hmu$ on the boundary. These are quite general assumptions on the coefficients which are easy to check. To our knowledge, our paper is the first to establish discreteness of transmission eigenvalues for Maxwell's equations without assuming any restrictions on the sign combination of the contrasts $\eps-\heps$ and $\mu - \hmu$ near the boundary, and allowing for all the electromagnetic parameters to be inhomogeneous and anisotropic, except for on the boundary where they are isotropic but not necessarily constant as it is often assumed in the literature.

We consider the scattering problem governed by the Helmholtz equation with inhomogeneity in both `conductivity' in the divergence form and `potential' in the lower order term. The support of the inhomogeneity is assumed to contain a convex corner. We prove that, due to the presence of such corner under appropriate assumptions on the potential and conductivity in the vicinity of the corner, any incident field scatters. Based on corner scattering analysis we present a uniqueness result on determination of the polygonal convex hull of the support of admissible inhomogeneities, from scattering data corresponding to one single incident wave. These results require only certain regularity around the corner for the coefficients modeling the inhomogeneity, whereas away from the corner they can be quite general. Our main results on scattering and inverse scattering are established for $\mathbb{R}^2$, while some analytic tools are developed in any dimension $n\geq 2$.

The concept of topological derivative has proved effective as a qualitative inversion tool for a wave-based identification of finite-sized objects. Although for the most part, this approach remains based on a heuristic interpretation of the topological derivative, a first attempt toward its mathematical justification was done in Bellis et al. (Inverse Problems 29:075012, 2013) for the case of isotropic media with far field data and inhomogeneous refraction index. Our paper extends the analysis there to the case of anisotropic scatterers and background with near field data. Topological derivative-based imaging functional is analyzed using a suitable factorization of the near fields, which became achievable thanks to a new volume integral formulation recently obtained in Bonnet (J. Integral Equ. Appl. 29:271-295, 2017). Our results include justification of sign heuristics for the topological derivative in the isotropic case with jump in the main operator and for some cases of anisotropic media, as well as verifying its decaying property in the isotropic case with near field spherical measurements configuration situated far enough from the probing region.

We introduce a direct, linear sampling approach to imaging in an acoustic waveguide with sound hard walls. The waveguide terminates at one end and has unknown geometry due to compactly supported wall deformations. The goal of imaging is to determine these deformations and to identify localized scatterers in the waveguide, using a remote array of sensors that emits time harmonic probing waves and records the echoes. We present a theoretical analysis of the imaging approach and illustrate its performance with numerical simulations.

This paper considers the imaging of local perturbations of an infinite penetrable periodic layer. A cell of this periodic layer consists of several bounded inhomogeneities situated in a known homogeneous media. We use \mfied{a differential linear sampling method} to reconstruct the support of perturbations without using the Green's function of the periodic layer nor reconstruct the periodic background inhomogeneities. The justification of this imaging method relies on the well-posedeness of a nonstandard interior transmission problem, which until now was an open problem except for the special case when the local perturbation didn't intersect the background inhomogeneities. The analysis of this new interior transmission problem is the main focus of this paper. We then complete the justification of our inversion method and present some numerical examples that confirm the theoretical behavior of the differential indicator function determining the reconstructable regions in the periodic layer.

In this paper, we employ asymptotic analysis to determine information about small volume defects in a known anisotropic scattering medium from far field scattering data. The location of the defects is reconstructed via the MUSIC algorithm from the range of the multi-static response matrix derived from the asymptotic expansion of the far field pattern in the presence of small defects. Since the same data determines the transmission eigenvalues corre- sponding to the perturbed media, we investigate how the presence of the defects changes the transmission eigenvalues and use this information to recover the strength of the small defects. We provide convergence results on transmission eigenvalues as the size of the defects tends to zero as well as derive the first correction term in the asymptotic expansion of the simple transmission eigen- values. Numerical examples are presented to show the viability of our imaging method.

In this paper we consider the transmission eigenvalue problem for Maxwell's equations corresponding to non-magnetic inhomogeneities with contrast in electric permittivity that changes sign inside its support. We formulate the transmission eigenvalue problem as an equivalent homogeneous system of boundary integral equation, and assuming that the contrast is constant near the boundary of the support of the inhomogeneity, we prove that the operator associated with this system is Fredholm of index zero and depends analytically on the wave number. Then we show the existence of wave numbers that are not transmission eigenvalues which by an application of the analytic Fredholm theory implies that the set of transmission eigenvalues is discrete with positive infinity as the only accumulation point., Comment: 26 pages

In this paper we consider the inverse acoustic scattering (in \mathbb{R}^3) or electromagnetic scattering (in \mathbb{R}^2, for the scalar TE-polarization case) problem of reconstructing possibly multiple defective penetrable regions in a known anisotropic material of compact support. We develop the factorization method for a non-absorbing anisotropic background media containing penetrable defects. In particular, under appropriate assumptions on the anisotropic material properties of the media we develop a rigorous characterization for the support of the defective regions from the given far field measurements. Finally we present some numerical examples in the two dimensional case to demonstrate the feasibility of our reconstruction method including examples for the case when the defects are voids (i.e. subregions with refractive index the same as the background outside the inhomogeneous hosting media).

We consider the interior transmission problem associated with the scattering by an inhomogeneous (possibly anisotropic) highly oscillating periodic media. We show that, under appropriate assumptions, the solution of the interior transmission problem converges to the solution of a homogenized problem as the period goes to zero. Furthermore, we prove that the associated real transmission eigenvalues converge to transmission eigenvalues of the homogenized problem. Finally we show how to use the first transmission eigenvalue of the period media, which is measurable from the scattering data, to obtain information about constant effective material properties of the periodic media. The convergence results presented here are not optimal. Such results with rate of convergence involve the analysis of the boundary correction and will be subject of a forthcoming paper.

We consider the transmission eigenvalue problem for an impenetrable obstacle with Dirichlet boundary condition surrounded by a thin layer of non-absorbing inhomogeneous material. We derive a rigorous asymptotic expansion for the first transmission eigenvalue with respect to the thickness of the thin layer. Our convergence analysis is based on a Max-Min principle and an iterative approach which involves estimates on the corresponding eigenfunctions. The considered Robin problem can formally be seen as a small perturbation of a Dirichlet problem. However, due to the sign of the impedance value, its associated eigenvalues converge point-wise to $-\infty$ as the perturbation goes to zero. We prove that in this case, Dirichlet eigenpairs are the only accumulation points of the Robin eigenpairs with normalized eigenvectors. We then provide a criteria to select accumulating sequences of eigenvalues and eigenvectors and exhibit their full asymptotic with respect to the small parameter.
