5. Hydrogenation catalysts from supported palladium complexes

Abstract

In the course of this study, a series of mononuclear palladium phosphine complexes, trans-[PdX2(PMe3)2] and the binuclear analogues, trans- [Pd2X4(PR3)2] (X = C1, Br or I; R=Me, Et, Pri or Bu), were prepared. The purity of the complexes were confirmed using 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy and microanalysis (M/A). These complexes were supported on silica by a wet impregnation technique and used as catalysts in the liquid phase hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde. The results obtained were contrasted with those from a 5 % palladium-on-silica catalyst, which was shown to produce hydrocinnamaldehyde and then phenylpropanol sequentially. The reactions of all of these catalysts took place on a hydrocarbonaceous over-layer which formed rapidly from unsaturated aldehydes and alcohols. The presence of diis over-layer was confirmed from mass balance calculations and elevated C and H % microanalysis measurements on used catalysts.

19. Sustaining cultures through cinematic space – the historical continuance of art and architectural traditions in 20 C Film

Abstract

This paper explores the idea of film as a medium that has been used to celebrate, develop and ultimately sustain cultural traditions in an age of globalization and technological and cultural change. It borrows ideas from the sector of heritage, namely intangible cultural heritage, and uses this to offer a framework for understanding the work of two key mid 20th century film directors, Jean Renoir and Yasujiro Ozu. Through a detailed analysis of the cinematography employed by both directors, their use of architectural space and the cultural traditions that they drew heavily upon, it explores examples how both directors used film as a medium for the reutilization of their particular cultural artistic traditions in a contemporary setting.

25. Live project: understanding the design process from the project brief to post occupancy evaluation

Abstract

The live project was delivered to second year students in the BA (Hons) Architecture program at Birmingham School of Architecture and Design at Birmingham City University in the academic year 2018/19. The students were asked to design an external structure for an outdoor area in a Montessori Kindergarten. They had the option of either designing a tree house, a new play house, a shelter for the forest school or an amphitheatre. All projects were to be located in the extended garden of the nursery on adjacent sites. After the initial design stage ended in February 2019 with a presentation of all projects to the client (the nursery managers), two selected projects were then built in June 2019, during the school’s events week with a group of students. A few weeks after the hand-over of the completed projects, some of the students as well as the tutors went back to the nursery to conduct a Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) of the projects. In order to experience the design and construction phases, this live project was composed in eight stages, directly related to the RIBA Plan of Work, which “recognises the stages that a building project goes through and promotes the importance of recording and disseminating information about completed projects.”vi The project therefore required the students to integrate structural and technological solutions into their design proposals

To coincide with the launch of its conference series as part of the “Housing – Critical Futures” programme, in April 2015, Architecture_MPS invited leading organisations, activists, architects and charities to author opinion pieces on the housing crisis in the UK. Their statements collected together in this special edition. Speakers at the conference included Stephen Hodder, President, RIBA and David Waterhouse, Head of Strategic Planning, CABE. The authors collected together in this issue include: Ken Loach, Film Director; Stewart Baseley, Executive Chairman. The Home Builders Federation; Siân Errington from Unite the Union; Rico Wojtulewicz. Policy Advisor, The House Builders Association; Brian Schubert and Rachel Hartley, The Association of Residential Letting Agents; Colin Rice, Cullinan Studio; Dr Glyn Robbins, Defend Council Housing; Suzanne Muna, Paul Kershaw, Arti Dillon, Housing Workers; Elaine Bailey, Chief Executive, The Hyde Group Housing Association; Eileen Short, Coorganiser The March for Homes; Dr. Rob MacDonald, Academic, Author, Editor, DIY City. Abstract

A year after the 2012 Olympics in London, and as the authorities of Brazil prepare for the forthcoming Olympics and football's World Cup, this paper examines the influence of the televised media image on the development and design of sports stadia, and the nature of contemporary sports spectatorship. Arguing that globalized television has turned sport into an international media event, it will suggest that its architecture has mutated into a semi-real, semi-virtual phenomenon in which the difference between the physical structure and its mediated image has definitively blurred. Drawing upon the ideas of Paul Virilio, we suggest that a concomitant blurring in terms of spectatorship is one of the results. In this new mediated realm the nature of vision human itself threatens to morph and evolve as it merges with mediated visualization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
