Two-dimensional materials offer a unique range of magnetic, electronic and mechanical properties which can be controlled by external stimuli. Pressure is a particularly important stimulus, as it can be achieved readily and can produce large responses, especially in low-dimensional materials. In this paper we explore the pressure-dependence of the structural and magnetic properties of a two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) molecular framework antiferromagnet with ferromagnetic layers, Ni(NCS)$_2$, up to 8.4 kbar. Through a combination of X-ray and neutron diffraction analysis, we find that Ni(NCS)$_2$ is significantly more compressible than comparable vdW metal halides, and its response is anisotropic not only out of the plane, but also within the layers. Using bulk magnetisation and neutron diffraction data, we show that the ambient layered antiferromagnetic phase is maintained up to the largest investigated pressure, but with an enhanced N\'eel temperature, $T_\mathrm{N}$, ($\Delta T_\mathrm{N} / T_\mathrm{N} = +19$ %) and a large pressure sensitivity ($Q = \frac{1}{T_\mathrm{N}} \frac{\mathrm{d}T_\mathrm{N}}{\mathrm{d}P} = +2.3$ % kbar$^{-1}$), one of the larger values of magnetic pressure responsiveness for a vdW material. Density functional theory calculations suggest that this is due to increasing three-dimensionality. These results provide some of the first insights into the pressure response of molecular framework vdW magnets and suggest investigation of other molecular framework vdW magnets might uncover contenders for future pressure-switchable devices., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We propose a methodology to quantify the impact on breast cancer mortality of diagnostic delays caused by public health measures introduced as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. These measures affected cancer pathways by halting cancer screening, delaying diagnostic tests, and reducing the numbers of patients starting treatment. We introduce a semi-Markov model, to quantify the impact of the pandemic based on publicly available population data for women age 65{89 years in England and relevant medical literature. We quantify age-specific excess deaths, for a period up to 5 years, along with years of life expectancy lost and change in cancer mortality by cancer stage. Our analysis suggests a 3-6% increase in breast cancer deaths, corresponding to more than 40 extra deaths, per 100,000 women, after age 65 years old over 5 years, and a 4-6% increase in registrations of advanced (Stage 4) breast cancer. Our modelling approach exhibits consistent results in sensitivity analyses, providing a model that can account for changes in breast cancer diagnostic and treatment services.

X-ray characterisation methods have undoubtedly enabled cutting-edge advances in all aspects of materials research. Despite the enormous breadth of information that can be extracted from these techniques, the challenge of radiation-induced sample change and damage remains prevalent. This is largely due to the emergence of modern, high-intensity X-ray source technologies and growing potential to carry out more complex, longer duration in-situ or in-operando studies. The tunability of synchrotron beamlines enables the routine application of photon energy-dependent experiments. This work explores the structural stability of [Rh(COD)Cl]2, a widely used catalyst and precursor in the chemical industry, across a range of beamline parameters that target X-ray energies of 8 keV, 15 keV, 18 keV and 25 keV, on a powder X-ray diffraction synchrotron beamline at room temperature. Structural changes are discussed with respect to absorbed X-ray dose at each experimental setting associated with the respective photon energy. In addition, the X-ray radiation hardness of the catalyst is discussed, by utilising the diffraction data at the different energies to determine a dose limit, which is often considered in protein crystallography and typically overlooked in small molecule crystallography. This work not only gives fundamental insight into how damage manifests in this organometallic catalyst, but will encourage careful consideration of experimental X-ray parameters before conducting diffraction on similar radiation-sensitive organometallic materials., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

Partially-ordered magnets are distinct from both spin liquids and conventional ordered magnets because order and disorder coexist in the same magnetic phase. Here, we determine the nature of partial order in the canonical frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd$_2$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. Using single-crystal neutron-diffraction measurements in applied magnetic field, magnetic symmetry analysis, inelastic neutron-scattering measurements, and spin-wave modeling, we show that its low-temperature magnetic structure involves two propagation vectors (2-$\mathbf{k}$ structure) with suppressed ordered magnetic moments and enhanced spin-wave fluctuations. We present temperature dependent inelastic neutron scattering measurments, accompanied byab-initio calculations of phonon spectra and elastic properties as a function of pressure to understand anharmonicity of phonons and to study the mechanism of negative thermal expansion and negative linear compressibility behaviour of ZnAu2(CN)4. The mechanism is identified in terms of specific anharmonic modes that involve bending of the Zn(CN)4-Au- Zn(CN)4 linkage. The high-pressure phase transition at about 2 GPa is also investigated and found to be related to softening of a phonon mode at the L-point at the Brillouin zone boundary and its coupling with a zone-centre phonon and an M-point phonon in the ambient pressure phase. Although the phase transition is primarily driven by a L-point soft phonon mode, which usually leads to a second order transition with a 2 x 2 x 2 supercell, in the present case the structure is close to an elastic instability that leads to a weakly first order transition., Comment: 26 Pages, 12 Figures

At the heart of systems chemistry lies the idea that supramolecular interactions can give rise to complex and unexpected collective states that emerge on a fundamentally different lengthscale to that of the interactions themselves. While in certain cases - e.g. the self-assembly of virus-like polyhedral cages from coordination building blocks - it is possible to control emergence in a systematic manner, the development of general approaches remains a fundamental challenge in the field. In the conceptually-related domain of frustrated magnetism - where collective states give rise to exotic physics of relevance to data storage and spintronics - the task of predicting emergent behaviour is simplified through control over the geometry and form of the magnetic interactions from which complexity arises. Seeking to combine approaches from these two fields, we study here the solid phases of inorganic polymer chains assembled from non-magnetic gold(I)/silver(I) cations and cyanide anions. We show the periodic inter-chain potential encodes a supramolecular interaction that can be tuned to mimic different magnetic interactions between XY spins ("spin rotors"). Because the chains pack on a triangular lattice, the crystal structures of gold(I)/silver(I) cyanides can be interpreted in terms of the phase behaviour of triangular XY magnets. Complex magnetic states predicted for this family - including hidden quadrupolar order and emergent spin-vortex quasiparticles - are realised for the first time in the structural chemistry of these cyanide polymers. In this way we demonstrate both how simple inorganic materials might behave as structural analogues of otherwise-unrealisable "toy" spin models, and also how a theoretical understanding of those models might be used to predict and control emergent phenomena in chemical systems., Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures. The compositional dependence of thermal expansion behaviour in 19 different perovskite-like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of composition [AI][MII(HCOO)3] (A = alkylammonium cation; M = octahedrally-coordinated divalent metal) is studied using variable-temperature X-ray powder diffraction measurements. While all systems show essentially the same type of thermomechanical response-irrespective of their particular structural details-the magnitude of this response is shown to be a function of AI and MII cation radii, as well as the molecular anisotropy of AI. Functional materials design normally focuses on structurally-ordered systems because disorder is considered detrimental to many important physical properties. Here we challenge this paradigm by showing that particular types of strongly-correlated disorder can give rise to useful characteristics that are inaccessible to ordered states. A judicious combination of low-symmetry building unit and high-symmetry topological template leads to aperiodic "procrystalline" solids that harbour this type of topological disorder. We identify key classes of procrystalline states together with their characteristic diffraction behaviour, and establish a variety of mappings onto known and target materials. Crucially, the strongly-correlated disorder we consider is associated with specific sets of modulation periodicities distributed throughout the Brillouin zone. Lattice dynamical calculations reveal selective disorder-phonon coupling to lattice vibrations characterised by these same periodicities. The principal effect on the phonon spectrum is to bring about dispersion in energy rather than wave-vector, as in the poorly-understood "waterfall" effect observed in relaxor ferroelectrics. This property of procrystalline solids suggests a mechanism by which strongly-correlated topological disorder might allow new and useful functionalities, including independently-optimised thermal and electronic transport behaviour as required for high-performance thermoelectrics., Comment: 4 figures

We use variable-pressure neutron and X-ray diffraction measurements to determine the uniaxial and bulk compressibilities of nickel(II) cyanide, Ni(CN)$_2$. Whereas other layered molecular framework materials are known to exhibit negative area compressibility, we find that Ni(CN)$_2$ does not. We attribute this difference to the existence of low-energy in-plane tilt modes that provide a pressure-activated mechanism for layer contraction. The experimental bulk modulus we measure is about four times lower than that reported elsewhere on the basis of density functional theory methods [{\it Phys. Rev. The frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ has an unusual partially-ordered magnetic structure at the lowest measurable temperatures. This structure is currently believed to involve four magnetic propagation vectors $\mathbf{k}\in \langle \frac{1}{2} \frac{1}{2} \frac{1}{2} \rangle^*$ in a cubic 4-$\mathbf{k}$ structure, based on analysis of magnetic diffuse-scattering data [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 16, L321 (2004)]. Here, we present three pieces of evidence against the 4-$\mathbf{k}$ structure. First, we report single-crystal neutron-diffraction measurements as a function of applied magnetic field, which are consistent with the selective field-induced population of non-cubic magnetic domains. Second, we present evidence from high-resolution powder neutron-diffraction measurements that rhombohedral strains exist within magnetic domains, which may be generated by magneto-elastic coupling only for the alternative 1-$\mathbf{k}$ structure. Finally, we show that the argument previously used to rule out the 1-$\mathbf{k}$ structure is flawed, and demonstrate that magnetic diffuse-scattering data can actually be fitted quantitatively by a 1-$\mathbf{k}$ structure in which spin fluctuations on ordered and disordered magnetic sites are strongly coupled. While all materials reduce their intrinsic volume under hydrostatic (uniform) compression, a select few actually \emph{expand} along one or more directions during this process of densification. As rare as it is counterintuitive, such "negative compressibility" behaviour has application in the design of pressure sensors, artificial muscles and actuators. The recent discovery of surprisingly strong and persistent negative compressibility effects in a variety of new families of materials has ignited the field. Here we review the phenomenology of negative compressibility in this context of materials diversity, placing particular emphasis on the common structural motifs that recur amongst known examples.
