Nominal algebra includes $\alpha$-equality and freshness constraints on nominal terms endowed with a nominal set semantics that facilitates reasoning about languages with binders. Nominal unification is decidable and unitary, however, its extension with equational axioms such as Commutativity (which is finitary) is no longer finitary unless permutation fixed-point constraints are used. In this paper, we extend the notion of nominal algebra by introducing fixed-point constraints and provide a sound semantics using strong nominal sets. We show, by providing a counter-example, that the class of nominal sets is not a sound denotation for this extended nominal algebra. To recover soundness we propose two different formulations of nominal algebra, one obtained by restricting to a class of fixed-point contexts that are in direct correspondence with freshness contexts and another obtained by using a different set of derivation rules.

- Abstract
Developing socio-emotional skills is essential for improving university students' quality of life and subjective well-being. These skills also play a crucial role in initial teacher education, as they are responsible for their students' cognitive, emotional and social development. The objective of the present study is to analyse the perceived impact of an emotional education programme for teachers in training. A total of 56 student teachers, from seven different master's degree programmes, completed a six-session programme. The evaluation was conducted through an experiential portfolio, which included the challenges and dynamics experienced in terms of emotional experience, the meaning of these experiences, and the difficulties and gains. The results revealed that, despite some difficulties, participation in the programme was considered by the participants as contributing to their emotional literacy, such as the ability to express and understand their own emotions and those of others, and to a growing sense of empathy and connectedness. This study highlights the importance of continuously investing in teachers' socioemotional growth and competence during their training and teaching careers.

We build on a fine-grained analysis of session-based interaction as provided by the linear logic typing disciplines to introduce the SAM, an abstract machine for mechanically executing session-typed processes. A remarkable feature of the SAM's design is its ability to naturally segregate and coordinate sequential with concurrent session behaviours. In particular, implicitly sequential parts of session programs may be efficiently executed by deterministic sequential application of SAM transitions, amenable to compilation, and without concurrent synchronisation mechanisms. We provide an intuitive discussion of the SAM structure and its underlying design, and state and prove its correctness for executing programs in a session calculus corresponding to full classical linear logic CLL. We also discuss extensions and applications of the SAM to the execution of linear and session-based programming languages., Comment: Extended Version of ESOP paper

The innovative work shows a new strategy to modify the physicochemical properties of medicines and improve patients' lives. The mechanochemical synthesis and characterization of the first Norfloxacin nanocrystal are described. In recent decades, nanotechnology has gained significant attention in the scientific field through the study of the design, formation and application of materials at the nanoscale level. In the pharmaceutical sector, nanotechnology has been the focus of studies on systems that allow increased bioavailability. The present work investigated the formation of pharmaceutical nanocrystals. Nanocrystals are crystalline nanoparticles ranging in size from a few nanometers to 1,000 nm, composed of 100% of the drug and stabilized by surfactants or polymeric stabilizers. They have a safe formulation and are well tolerated compared to conventional medicines. The drug used in this study was Norfloxacin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic that has low bioavailability. Several nanocrystallization techniques are found in the literature, among which the mechanochemical method stands out. Mechanochemistry is an approach that allows the reduction of particle size through the mechanical energy provided in the reaction medium. Thus, it was possible to obtain nanomaterials and explore the influence of surfactants in controlling the particle size and morphology of the materials obtained.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To analyze the incompleteness and trend of incompleteness of the race/color variable in hospitalizations due to COVID-19 whose outcome was death, in Brazil, between April 2020 and April 2022. METHODS Ecological time series study on the incompleteness of the race/color variable in hospitalizations due to COVID-19 whose outcome was death in Brazil, its macro-regions and Federative Units (FU), by joinpoint regression, calculation of Monthly Percent Change (MPC) and Average Monthly Percent Change (AMPC), based on data from the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH/SUS). RESULTS The incompleteness of the race/color variable in COVID-19 hospitalizations with a death outcome in Brazil was 25.85%, considered poor. All regions of the country had a poor degree of incompleteness, except for the South, which was considered regular. In the period analyzed, the joinpoint analysis revealed a stable trend in the incompleteness of the race/color variable in Brazil (AMPC = 0.54; 95%CI: -0.64 to 1.74; p = 0.37) and in the Southeast (AMPC = -0.61; 95%CI: -3.36 to 2.22; p = 0.67) and North (AMPC = 3.74; 95%CI: -0.14 to 7.78; p = 0.06) regions. The South (AMPC = 5.49; 95%CI: 2.94 to 8.11; p = 0.00002) and Northeast (AMP = 2.50; 95%CI: 0.77 to 4.25; p = 0.005) regions showed an increase in the incompleteness trend, while the Midwest (AMPC = -2.91 ; 95%CI: -5.26 to -0.51; p = 0.02) showed a downward trend. CONCLUSION The proportion of poor completeness and the stable trend of incompleteness show that there was no improvement in the quality of filling in the race/color variable during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, a fact that may have increased health inequalities for the black population and made it difficult to plan strategic actions for this population, considering the pandemic context. The results found reinforce the need to encourage discussion on the subject, given that the incompleteness of health information systems increases inequalities in access to health services and compromises the quality of health data.

Mathematical Physics ,High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Exotic spinors arise in non-simply connected base manifolds due to the nonequivalent spinor structure. The dynamics of exotic spinors are endowed with an additional differential factor. In this work, we merge the exotic spinor scenario with Cartan's spinor viewpoint, according to which a given spacetime point is understood as a kind of composition of spinor entries. As a result, we arrive at a geometrical setup in which the Minkowski metric is perturbed by elements reflecting the nontrivial topology. Such corrections shall be felt by any physical system studied with the resulting bilinear form. Within the flat spacetime context, we investigate quasinormal modes arising from the interference of nontrivial topology in the scalar field dispersion relation., Comment: 17 pages, no figures. - Abstract
Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) generally have a delay in the development of motor skills when compared to typical children, however, to date, no study has investigated whether motor limitations can interfere in the participation of these children. The objectives of this study were: verify if the motor skills can explain the frequency, the percentage of number of activities, the involvement and the desire to change in participation at home, school and community of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and; identify if contextual factors would modify the association between motor skills and participation outcomes. The participation and the motor skills were evaluated in 30 children with ASD between 5 and 10 years old. Participation outcomes were measured by the Participation and Environment Measure--Children and Youth (PEM-CY) and the motor skills were assessed by the Timed Up and Go, Timed Up and Down Stairs, Test of Gross Motor Development--2nd edition and Pediatric Balance Scale. The results of the study demonstrated that the motor skills of the locomotion, objects control, change position and balance explained participation outcomes of children with ASD classified from mild to moderate, between 5 and 10 years old. Moreover, the sex variable modified the association between the motor skills and the school participation, with girls performing less activities at this setting.

Abstract Cyanobacterial phycocyanin and phycoerythrin are gaining commercial interest due to their nutrition and healthcare values. This research analyzed the biomass accumulation and pigment production of two strains of Leptolyngbya under different combinations of light colors and intensities. The results showed that while Leptolyngbya sp.4 B1 (B1) produced all phycobiliproteins, Leptolyngbya sp.5 F2 (F2) only had phycocyanin and allophycocyanin. Both the color of the light and its light intensity affect the biomass accumulation and phycoerythrin concentration in strain B1. Although white light at medium intensity (50 μmol m-2 s-1) causes greater biomass accumulation (1.66 ± 0.13 gDW L-1), low-intensity (25 μmol m-2 s-1) green light induces lower biomass accumulation with twice the pigment content (87.70 ± 2.46 mg gDW -1), culminating in 71% greater productivity. In contrast, for the F2 strain, light intensity positively influenced biomass and pigment accumulation, being observed 2.25 ± 0.10 gDW L-1 under white light at 100 μmol m-2 s-1 and higher phycocyanin concentration (138.38 ± 3.46 mg gDW -1) under red light at 100 μmol m-2 s-1. These findings provide insights into optimizing the growth conditions by altering the intensity and wavelength of light for future production of phycocyanin and phycoerythrin from local cyanobacteria.

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

Vaccinia-related kinase 1 (VRK1) is a gene which has been implicated in the pathological process of a broad range of neurodevelopmental disorders as well as neuropathies, such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Here we report a family presenting ALS in an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance, segregating with a homozygous missense mutation located in VRK1 gene (p.R321C; Arg321Cys). Proteomic analyses from iPSC-derived motor neurons identified 720 proteins eligible for subsequent investigation, and our exploration of protein profiles revealed significant enrichments in pathways such as mTOR signaling, E2F, MYC targets, DNA repair response, cell proliferation and energetic metabolism. Functional studies further validated such alterations, showing that affected motor neurons presented decreased levels of global protein output, ER stress and downregulation of mTOR signaling. Mitochondrial alterations also pointed to decreased reserve capacity and increased non-mitochondrial oxygen consumption. Taken together, our results present the main pathological alterations associated with VRK1 mutation in ALS.

BackgroundContinuous investment and systematic evaluation of program accomplishments are required to achieve excellence in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) care, especially in resource-limited settings. Therefore, this study evaluates the impact of problem-driven interventions on reperfusion use rate in a long-term operating STEMI network from a low- to middle-income country.MethodsThis is a healthcare improvement evaluation study of Salvador's public STEMI network in a quasi-experimental design, comparing data from 2009 to 2010 (pre-intervention) and 2019-2020 (post-intervention). There were evaluated all confirmed STEMI cases assisted in both periods. The interventions, implemented since 2017, included: expanding the support team, defining criteria to be a spoke, and initiating continuous education activities. The primary outcome was the rate of patients undergoing reperfusion, with secondary outcomes being time from door-to-ECG (D2E) and ECG-to-STEMI-team trigger (E2T).ResultsOver ten years, the network's coverage increased by 300,000 individuals, and expanded by 1,800 km2. A total of 885 records were analyzed, 287 in the pre-intervention group (182 men [63·4%]; mean [SD] age 62·1 [12·5] years) and 598 in the post-intervention group (356 men [59·5%]; mean [SD] age 61.9 [11·8] years). It was noticed a substantial increase in reperfusion delivery rate (90 [31%] vs. 431 [73%]; P = 001) and reductions in time from D2E (159 [83–340] vs. 29 [15–63], P = 001), and E2T (31 [21–44] vs. 16 [6–40], P = 001).ConclusionThe strategies adopted by Salvador's STEMI network were associated with significant improvements in the rate of patients undergoing reperfusion and in D2E and E2T. However, the mortality rate remains high.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can provide several ancillary services to renewable energy-dominated power systems. However, the choice of the battery employed in the projects is not a straightforward task, since there are several criteria that should be taken into account. Thus, six criteria are considered in this work: the system dc-link voltage, battery lifetime, battery bank volume, battery bank power losses, battery bank price and storage capacity index. The last criterion is related to the BESS energy storage capacity during one-year mission profile operation, which depends on the battery selected for the project. The Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) is used to choose the best battery based on the relative importance between the Operational Expenditure (OPEX) and Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) concepts. The methodology proposed in this work was applied to 27 batteries composed by lead-acid and Li-ion batteries aiming to select the best solution for a Photovoltaic (PV) system with storage energy based on the peak shaving operation mode. Considering the CAPEX with more relative importance, a lead-acid battery bank was found to be the best solution. On the other hand, when the OPEX is considered more important, a Li-ion battery bank was selected as the best solution.

Aluminum (Al) toxicity inhibits root growth, affecting the ability of plants to absorb water and nutrients. Although magnesium (Mg) can decrease Al phytotoxicity, its effect on plant root growth in minimal solution containing calcium (Ca) and Al is not yet known. We evaluated the root length of wheat and maize genotypes with different sensitivities to Al in minimal solution containing different combinations of Al and Mg: (i) control (without Al and Mg); (ii) with 0.15 mmolc L−1 of Al; (iii) with 0.15 mmolc L−1 of Al plus 2 mmolc L−1 of Mg; and (iv) with 0.15 mmolc L−1 Al plus 10 mmolc L−1 of Mg. By measuring the difference in root length, we found that the minimum solution method with 0.15 mmolc L−1 of Al was efficient to classify the wheat and maize genotypes tolerance to Al. The Al-sensitive wheat and maize genotypes showed a higher reduction in root length compared to the Al-tolerant genotypes when subjected to a solution containing Al. The addition of Mg in the solution, especially at higher concentration (10 mmolc L−1 of Mg), effectively alleviated Al toxicity and favored root growth of wheat and maize genotypes. Our results suggest that Mg alleviates the toxic effects of Al on root growth of wheat and maize genotypes in minimal solution containing Ca and Al and that both the use of Al-tolerant wheat and maize genotypes and the maintenance of adequate levels of Mg in the soil solution are important strategies to alleviate Al toxicity to plants.

We consider the problem of constrained motion along a conic path under a given external potential function. The model is described as a second-class system capturing the behavior of a certain class of specific quantum field theories. By exhibiting a suitable integration factor, we obtain the general solution for the associated non-linear differential equations. We perform the canonical quantization in a consistent way in terms of the corresponding Dirac brackets. We apply the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm to unravel and classify the whole internal constraints structure inherent to its dynamical Hamiltonian description, obtain the proper extended Hamiltonian function, determine the Lagrange multiplier and compute all relevant Poisson brackets among the constraints, Hamiltonian and Lagrange multiplier. The complete Dirac brackets algebra in phase space as well as its physical realization in terms of differential operators is explicitly obtained.

Background: The incidence of cardiovascular disease is on the increase in Africa and with it, an increase in the incidence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). OHCA carries a high mortality, especially in low-resource settings. Interventions to treat OHCA, such as mass cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training campaigns are costly. One cost-effective and scalable intervention is telephone-guided bystander CPR (tCPR). Little data exists regarding the quality of tCPR. This study aimed to determine quality of tCPR in untrained members of the public. Participants were also asked to provide their views on the understandability of the tCPR instructions. Methods: This study followed a prospective, simulation-based observational study design. Adult laypeople who have not had previous CPR training were recruited at public CPR training events and asked to perform CPR on a manikin. Quality was assessed in terms of hand placement, compression rate, compression depth, chest recoil, and chest exposure. tCPR instructions were provided by a trained medical provider, via loudspeaker. Participants were also asked to complete a short questionnaire afterwards, detailing the understandability of the tCPR instructions. Data were analysed descriptively and compared to recommended quality guidance. Results: Fifty participants were enrolled. Hand placement was accurate in 74 % (n = 37) of participants, while compression depth and chest recoil only had compliance in 20 % (n = 10) and 24 % (n = 12) of participants, respectively. The mean compression rate was within guidelines in just under half (48 %, n = 24) of all participants. Only 20 (40 %) participants exposed the manikin's chest. Only 46 % (n = 23) of participants felt that the overall descriptions offered during the tCPR guidance were understandable, while 80 % (n = 40) and 36 % (n = 18) felt that the instructions on hand placement and compression rate were understandable, respectively. Lastly, 94 % (n = 47) of participants agreed that they would be more likely to perform bystander CPR if they were provided with tCPR. Conclusion: The quality of CPR performed by laypersons is generally suboptimal and this may affect patient outcomes. There is an urgent need to develop more understandable tCPR algorithms that may encourage bystanders to start CPR and optimise its quality.
