No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-03-01 Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) This study evaluated the formation of a Masquelet-induced membrane created through the formation of segmental bone defects in the radii of 15 healthy domestic chickens. When the chickens were in a surgical plane of anesthesia, a 1.5-cm segmental bone defect was produced in the left radius, which was subsequently filled with a bone cement spacer during its pasty polymerization phase. The bone defects were evaluated through radiographic imaging immediately after surgery and at 7, 15, 21, and 30 days after the creation of the bone defect. Five birds were euthanatized at 15, 21, and 30 days postoperatively for histological evaluation of the bone defect site. Immediate postoperative radiographic examination of the radii showed the presence of bone cement, which occupied the segmental bone defect. Thirty days after the surgical procedure, the presence of new bone formation at the fractured extremities was evident in the 5 remaining chickens. Histologically, the induced-membrane had 3 distinct zones at 15 days postoperatively, including 1 cell layer in contact with the bone cement spacer, 1 layer with collagen fibers, and 1 layer in contact with muscle, which was composed of disorganized connective tissue, active fibroblasts, and blood vessels. Twenty-one days after surgery, the zones were less defined, and there were metaplastic areas comprising cartilage and bone. Postoperative, diffuse mineralization of the membrane was observed 30 days after the surgical procedure. Formation of the induced membrane was observed during all periods of evaluation. The best histological characteristics for the Masquelet-induced membrane were detected 15 days after the formation of the bone defect, suggesting this would be the optimal time for second-stage surgery for bone reconstruction. Infrared thermography is a safe and non-invasive method of research used to aid the diagnosis of inflammation, infectious diseases and muscle damage, as well as in reproductive control. The images captured by thermography convert infrared radiation emanating from the body in a temperature gradient, represented by a pattern of visible colors. Aspiration cytology, on the other hand, is an easily applicable research tool that offers excellent preliminary results and directs the clinical case towards a diagnosis. A male jaguar (Panthera onca) presenting a tumor in the abdominal region was examined with the aid of a thermal imager and later a fine needle aspiration cytology was performed. These methods disclosed a mesenchymal malignant neoplasm; later histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of fibrosarcoma. The combination of thermography with fine needle aspiration cytology provided excellent results, showing efficiency, speed and convenience as a diagnostic aid.

Congenital defects can cause changes in the normal function or morphology of organs, thus contributing to neonatal mortality. Malformations in dogs occur as a result of genetic factors or by the action of teratogenic agents during pregnancy. Genetic defects can be inherited from one or both parents. These defects are more common in purebred puppies or can even be the result of consanguinity. Teratogenic agents, such as toxins, drugs, infectious diseases, mechanical influences, and irradiation, may affect the litters during gestational development. Hypoplasia of ribs has been described in human newborns. It is a rare and lethal malformation of autosomal recessive inheritance that prevents thoracic expansion and reduces pulmonary compliance, causing respiratory failure. A pregnant bitch of undefined breed was submitted to caesarean section. At birth, a neonate exhibited respiratory distress, and the palpation of the thorax indicated absence of ribs. In addition, the newborn had cleft palate and cleft lip, which led to perform the euthanasia of the animal. Post-mortem examination indicated hypoplasia of ribs and unilateral renal agenesis. As in the canine neonate, hypoplasia of ribs in human newborns is also associated with other malformations, such as cleft lip, cleft palate, and urogenital defects. The present report describes the first case of hypoplasia of ribs associated with other malformations in a canine neonate, the cause being possibly related to a genetic hereditary factor.

Sodium fluoroacetate (SFAC) is a potent rodenticide, largely used for rodent and domestic pest control. The toxic effects of SFAC are caused by fluoroacetate, a toxic metabolite, whose toxic action blocks the Krebs cycle and also induces the accumulation of citrate in the body, which is a serum calcium chelator. The most common clinical signs of this intoxication are the cardiac and neurological effects. However, the hematological, biochemical and histopathological findings occurring in intoxication are still unknown in different species. In the present study, 16 domestic cats were experimentally intoxicated with oral doses of fluoroacetate (0.45 mg/kg). The hematological and biochemical profiles and histopathological findings were made to look for auxiliary diagnosis methods in SFAC intoxications. The hematological profile showed transitory leucopenia and thrombocytopenia; in the biochemical profiles were detected hyperglycemia, increase of creatinequinase enzyme (CK) and creatinequinase cardiac isoenzyme (CK-MB), hypokalemia and hypophosfatemia. In the macroscopic and histopathological findings were observed lesions characteristic of degenerative and ischemic processes in heart, kidneys, liver, brain and lungs. These changes may be auxiliary to the diagnosis of intoxication by SFAC in cats, when associated with clinical signs described for the species. Thus, the complete blood count with platelet count, serum glucose, enzymes CK and CK-MB isoenzyme, as well as the electrolytes potassium and phosphorus, can facilitate the laboratory diagnosis during intoxication by SFAC, associated with the pathological findings in the case of death of the intoxicated animal.

A técnica convencional de citologia por impressão, substituindo-se a espátula por acetato de celulose, foi usada para diagnosticar lesões da superfície ocular externa do homem (10 homens/10 mulheres), bovino e eqüino (10 machos/IO fêmeas, respectivamente). Para tal, o acetato de celulose foi fragmentado em fitas, pressionado por 2 a 3 segundos, na superfície ocular externa de cada paciente. Posteriormente, o material foi corado pelo método de Giemsa e pelo de Shorr. Assim, diagnosticaram- se processos inflamatórios e neoplásicos. O método mostrou-se útil no auxílio das lesões oftalmológicas do homem e dos animais.

The effect of pharmacological dose of α-tocopherol on heart health was determined in Wistar rats. Animals were randomly assigned to either C (control, n = 11) or E (α-tocopherol, n = 11) group. Animals received corn oil (C) or α-tocopherol dissolved in corn oil (250 mg α-tocopherol/[kg body wt/day]) (E) by gavage for a 7-week period. Rats underwent echocardiogram and were analyzed for cardiomyocyte histology and cardiac α-tocopherol absorption at the end of the study period. As compared to the C group, α-tocopherol-supplemented group showed significantly ( p < 0.05) lower body weight (E, 412.8 g vs C, 480.3 g) and total cardiac weight (E, 0.94 g vs C, 1.08 g); cardiomyocyte histological impairment; smaller left ventricle (LV) (LV end-diastolic diameter (E, 7.22 mm vs C, 7.37 mm), lower LV systolic [left ventricle fractional shortening (E, 47.6% vs C, 53.6%) and ejection fraction ratio (E, 85.4 vs C, 89.9)] and diastolic [early peak velocities of diastolic transmitral flow (E, 64.6 cm/sec vs C, 75.1 cm/sec)] function. The α-tocopherol uptake in target tissue was confirmed by determination of α-tocopherol concentration medians in cardiac tissue (E, 109.91 nmol/kg vs C, 52.09 nmol/kg). The current study indicates that pharmacological dose of α-tocopherol supplementation can induce cardiotoxicity in healthy rats.
