Floods are a major natural hazard, causing significant damage and fatalities across the world. The modelling of floods is possible, but has been historically performed by developed nations, with good access to data, allowing them to build and test hydraulic models which can predict the frequency and severity of flooding events. However, in recent years, satellite applications have led to a proliferation of remotely sensed data products, hence making it feasible to run global scale flood models. However, while feasible, the new generation of global flood models face serious issues, as the datasets are coarse and there are significant assumptions required for consistent methodologies. It is therefore necessary to understand the effect that these assumptions have on flood hazard predictions. In this thesis, one of the new generation of global flood models is analysed. First, the uncertainty of the model’s parameters is assessed, which codify assumptions into the modelling methodology. From a pool of 36 parameters, it is found the vast majority of the model’s output variance can be represented with only 7 parameters. Following this, the model is tested more rigorously at a single case-study location, the Po river basin in north Italy. Here the model is assessed for its ability to represent local conditions, and it is found that even a global scale model requires some information at the local scale to appropriately constrain the uncertainty of the predictions. Once done, there are modelling outputs of reasonable skill. The final chapter focusses on the prediction of peak flows, found to be the most uncertain component in the methodology. The regionalization scheme of the model was refined to incorporate uncertainty estimation. This thesis has therefore started the long process of incorporating uncertainty into global flood modelling and serves as a guide for further work in the field.

Meat pies have been adopted as one of Australia's favourite foods, and considered an icon by many. The hand-held convenience of the pie has made them a culinary necessity while watching sport, also beloved in Australia. An enduring question about the meat pie is what exactly is inside. This can be difficult to ascertain by digital, ocular or oral exploration. In this study we use MR imaging to study the contents of some of Australia's best loved pies.

Objective: Paediatric head injury is a common presentation to the ED. North American studies demonstrate increasing use of computed tomography (CT) brain scan (CTB) to investigate head injury. No such data exists for Australian EDs. The aim of this study was to describe CTB use in head injury over time in eight Australian EDs. Method(s): Retrospective ED electronic database and medical imaging database audit was undertaken for the years 2001-2010 by International Classification of Diseases (ICD) 9 or 10 code for head injury in children <16 years. EDs and medical imaging departments of eight hospitals in Australia (five tertiary referral and three mixed departments). Data for ED presentations with head injury, and all CTB performed by medical imaging were merged to obtain a data set of CTB performed within 24 h for head injury-related attendances to the ED. Descriptive and comparative analysis of CTB rates was performed. Result(s): The rate of CTB over the decade was 10.2% (95% confidence interval (CI) 9.9-10.5). The annual rate varied from 9.5% (95% CI 8.2-10.9) to 12.5% (95% CI 11.2-13.9). CTB use did not increase over time. Median year of age at time of CT scan was 4 years, with an interquartile range of 1.5-9.4 years. Overall there was a 9.2% increase in the CTB scan rate for every additional year of age at presentation (95% CI 6.6-12.1; P < 0.001). Background and aims Current clinical decision rules for pulmonary embolism are based on adult populations and have not been validated in children. The objective was to identify and evaluate clinical features for a first lifetime episode of pulmonary embolism in children presenting to the emergency department. Materials and methods We present a case-control study of children (<= 18 years) presenting to the emergency department of the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne between November 2007 and February 2015. Children with radiologically proven pulmonary embolism formed the case group, whilst children in whom there was a clinical suspicion of pulmonary embolism but negative diagnostic imaging formed the control group. Charts, electronic medical and imaging records of both cases and controls were reviewed and analysed. Results There were a total of 50 patients in this study (11 cases and 39 controls). Current or recent (within three months) use of the oral contraceptive pill was the most significant risk factor in our study (odds ratio 14.667, 95% confidence interval 3.001-71.678, P < 0.001). Most other features failed to discriminate between cases and controls, although there was a trend towards increased heart rate in cases. Conclusions Pulmonary embolism is perhaps the most common presenting spontaneous venous thromboembolism in the community and teenage girls on the oral contraceptive pill are most at-risk amongst children. The clinical signs and symptoms are often non-specific. Additional larger studies are required to determine the significance and magnitude of potential clinical predictors identified in this study.
