Abstract

International audience; The co-firing of coal and biomass consists in burning a mixture of two different fuels, one part of the fossil fuel having been replaced by biomass. This process allows forincreasing easily the production of renewable energy at low cost. Its implementation in existing coal power plants requires technical modifications called "retrofit". This articlepresents the case of large pulverized coal power plants, in which the proportion of used biomass can amount to 10% by mass. The characteristics of the biomass compared tothat of coal, in particular regarding the possible impacts on operation of the installation. The various modes of preparation and injection of the biomass are described, includingnotably the appropriate technical or economic methods; La co-combustion de charbon et de biomasse consiste à brûler un mélange de deux combustibles différents, une partie du combustible fossile ayant été remplacé par dela biomasse. Ce procédé permet d'augmenter facilement la production d'énergie renouvelable et cela à faible coût. Sa mise en place dans des centrales à charbonexistantes requiert des modifications techniques, appelées « retrofit ». Cet article présente le cas des grandes centrales à charbon pulvérisé, pour lesquelles la proportionde biomasse utilisée peut atteindre 10 % en masse. Les caractéristiques de la biomasse sont comparées à celles du charbon, en particulier au sujet des impacts possiblesvis-à-vis de la conduite de l'installation.

Abstract

Familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (FHL) is a rare genetic disorder associated with the onset early in life of overwhelming activation of T lymphocytes and macrophages invariably leading to death. Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from an HLA-identical related donor is the treatment of choice in patients with this disease. However, fewer than 20% of patients have a disease-free HLA-identical sibling. BMT from HLA-nonidentical related donors has previously met with poor results, with graft rejection a major obstacle in all cases. We describe BMTs from HLA-nonidentical related donors (n = 13) and from a matched unrelated donor (n = 1) performed in two centers in 14 consecutive cases of FHL. Remission of disease was achieved before BMT in 10 patients. Marrow was T-cell–depleted to minimize graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Antiadhesion antibodies specific for the α chain of the leukocyte function–associated antigen-1 (LFA-1, CD11a) and the CD2 molecules were infused pre-BMT and post-BMT to help prevent graft rejection, in addition to a conditioning regimen of busulfan (BU), cyclophosphamide (CP), and etoposide (VP16) or antithymocyte globulin (ATG). Sustained engraftment was obtained in 11 of 17 transplants (3 patients had 2 transplants) and disease-free survival in 9 patients with a follow-up period of 8 to 69 months (mean, 33). Acute GVHD greater than stage I was not observed, and 1 patient had mild cutaneous chronic GVHD that resolved. Toxicity due to the BMT procedure was low. Results obtained using this protocol are promising in terms of engraftment and event-free survival within the limitations of the small sample. We conclude that an immunologic approach in terms of drugs used to obtain disease remission and a conditioning regimen that includes antiadhesion molecules in T-cell–depleted BMT from HLA genetically nonidentical donors is an alternative treatment that warrants further study in FHL patients who lack a suitable HLA genetically identical donor.

Abstract

Coeliac disease (CD) is life-long disorder treated with gluten-free diet (GFD). Aim of the study was to investigate long-term influence of GFD in respect to body mass and height, presence of anaemia and other symptoms. Methods. In 71 CD patients (mean age 12 y ; average time after diagnosis 9 y) physical and psychological testing, hemoglobin and red blood cell count were performed. 46. Hybrid CdSe/ZnS Quantum Dot-Gold Nanoparticle Composites Assembled by Click Chemistry: Toward Affordable and Efficient Redox Photocatalysts Working with Visible Light.

Abstract

A new modular, easy-to-synthesize photocatalyst was prepared by assembling colloidal CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QD) and gold nanoparticles (AuNP) via their ligands thanks to copper-catalyzed azide to alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) click chemistry. The resulting composite (QD-AuNP) photocatalyst was tested with a benchmark photoredox system previously reported by our group, for which QD alone acted as a photocatalyst but with a modest quantum yield (QY = 0.06%) and turnover number (TON = 350 in 3 h) due to poor charge separation. After optimization, the QD-AuNP composites exhibited much improved photocatalytic performances: up to five times higher TON (2600 in 3 h) and up to 24 times faster reaction in the first 10 min of visible irradiation. Such an improvement is attributed to an efficient electron transfer from QD to AuNP in the photoexcited QD-AuNP composites, which ensures a much better charge separation than that in QD alone. This was confirmed by studying both (i) the quenching of the QD photoluminescence during the synthesis of the QD-AuNP composites and (ii) the blue shift of the AuNP plasmon absorption band due to the accumulation of up to 7400 electrons per AuNP in QD-AuNP composites under visible light irradiation in the presence of electron donors.

47. Nuclear and Urinary Measurements Show the Efficacy of Sun-Protection Factor 50+ Sunscreen against DNA Photoproducts upon Real-Life Recreational Exposure.

Abstract

Sunscreens have been shown to protect against UVR-induced DNA damage in human skin under laboratory conditions. We presently extended these observations to real-life conditions in volunteers after their ordinary exposure habits during summer holidays. Volunteers were randomly assigned to a control group and an educated group supplied with a SPF ≥50 sunscreen and receiving instructions for use. A questionnaire was used to determine the extent of exposure. No difference in average solar UVR exposure was found between the two groups. DNA photoprotection was first assessed by, to our knowledge, a previously unreported noninvasive assay on the basis of the quantification of pyrimidine dimers released by DNA repair in urine. Damage was also quantified in the nuclear DNA extracted from the roof of suction blisters collected after recreational exposure. The urinary concentration of photoproducts was significantly higher in the control than in the educated group. The same trend was observed for the level of photoproducts in the DNA from suction blisters. The unambiguous observation of an efficient photoprotection against DNA damage afforded by sunscreen under real-life conditions provides strong support for the efficiency of the sunscreens. 48. Fine Tuning of Quantum Dots Photocatalysts for the Synthesis of Tropane Alkaloid Skeletons.

Abstract

Several types of Quantum Dots (QDs) (CdS, CdSe and InP, as well as core-shell QDs such as type I InP-ZnS, quasi type-II CdSe-CdS and inverted type-I CdS-CdSe) were considered for generating α-aminoalkyl free radicals. The feasibility of the oxidation of the N-aryl amines and the generation of the desired radical was evidenced experimentally by quenching of the photoluminescence of the QDs and by testing a vinylation reaction using an alkenylsulfone radical trap. The QDs were tested in a radical [3+3]-annulation reaction giving access to tropane skeletons and that requires the completion of two consecutive catalytic cycles. Several QDs such as CdS core, CdSe core and inverted type I CdS-CdSe core-shell proved to be efficient photocatalysts for this reaction. Interestingly, the addition of a second shorter chain ligand to the QDs appeared to be essential to complete the second catalytic cycle and to obtain the desired bicyclic tropane derivatives. Finally, the scope of the [3+3]-annulation reaction was explored for the best performing QDs and isolated yields that compare well with classical iridium photocatalysis were obtained., (© 2023 The Authors. Abstract

Cells are inevitably challenged by low-level/endogenous stresses that do not arrest DNA replication. Here, in human primary cells, we discovered and characterized a noncanonical cellular response that is specific to nonblocking replication stress. Although this response generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), it induces a program that prevents the accumulation of premutagenic 8-oxoguanine in an adaptive way. Indeed, replication stress-induced ROS (RIR) activate FOXO1-controlled detoxification genes such as SEPP1, catalase, GPX1, and SOD2. Primary cells tightly control the production of RIR: They are excluded from the nucleus and are produced by the cellular NADPH oxidases DUOX1/DUOX2, whose expression is controlled by NF-κB, which is activated by PARP1 upon replication stress. In parallel, inflammatory cytokine gene expression is induced through the NF-κB-PARP1 axis upon nonblocking replication stress. Increasing replication stress intensity accumulates DNA double-strand breaks and triggers the suppression of RIR by p53 and ATM. These data underline the fine-tuning of the cellular response to stress that protects genome stability maintenance, showing that primary cells adapt their responses to replication stress severity., (© 2023. Abstract

Exposure to solar UV is at the origin of numerous photodegradation pathways in biomolecules. Tryptophan is readily modified by UVB radiation into ring-opened and oxidized photoproducts. One of them, 6-formylindolo[3,2-b]carbazole (FICZ), has been extensively studied in the recent years because it very efficiently binds to AhR, a major factor in numerous biologic processes, such as metabolism of xenobiotics. Unfortunately, little information is available on the actual yield of FICZ upon exposure to low and biologically relevant doses of UV radiation. In the present work, we used a sensitive and specific HPLC-tandem mass spectrometry assay to quantify a series of photoproducts induced by UVB and simulated sunlight (SSL) in solutions of tryptophan. FICZ represented only a minute amount of the photoproducts (0.02 and 0.03%, respectively). Experiments were repeated in culture medium where the yield of FICZ was also found to be very low, even when Trp was added. Last, no FICZ could be detected in cytosolic fractions of cultured cells exposed to SSL. Altogether, the present results show that FICZ is a very minor photoproduct and that it cannot be considered the only endogenous photoproduct responsible for the induction of AhR-dependent responses in UV-irradiated cells., (© 2018 The American Society of Photobiology.)
