Abstract

Additive Manufacturing (AM) technique enables to produce very complex shape object by using a bottom-up approach. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is employed for production of plastic parts, by extruding a filament on a deposition plate and building the object layer-by-layer. The adhesion between layers plays a key role in final mechanical performances of polymeric parts produced by using FFF. In the present work, samples were produced through the FFF technique adopting three deposition velocities and two bed temperatures. Evolution of the temperature at the interface between adjacent layers during the process was monitored. Mechanical proprieties were evaluated through tensile tests and correlated to the thermal history experienced by the materials during deposition process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

15. Influence of absorptivity variation on Laser Powder Bed Fusion simulation and impact of process parameters on residual stress formation

Abstract

Laser powder bed fusion stands out for its precision and capability to manufacture parts with complex geometry, yet it poses challenges due to the significant thermal gradient, causing elevated residual stress and potential damage. Ensuring precise manufacturing of Ti6Al4V, demands control over input parameters. This study employs a simulation model using COMSOL Multiphysics to explore the influence of thermal absorptivity on reliability of predicted results and role of key process parameters including laser velocity and power on temperature distribution and thermal stress. Results indicate that the volumetric heat source with temperature-dependent absorptivity, ended in more accurate predictions compared to constant absorptivity. Moreover, considering absorptivity as a function of laser power and velocity enhanced results particularly in situations with higher energy densities. However, while reducing the laser velocity and increasing laser power typically led to higher residual stress as the area exposed to high temperature was wider, there was a critical point for the impact of laser velocity, where the role of thermal gradient overcomes the role of maximum temperature.

Abstract

The aim of this research activity was to study the fatigue behavior of laser welded joints of titanium alloy, in which the welding was performed using a laser source and in the absence of filler material, by means of unconventional full field techniques: Digital Image Correlation (DIC), and Infrared Thermography (IRT). The DIC technique allowed evaluating the strain gradients around the welded zone. The IRT technique allowed analyzing the thermal evolution of the welded surface during all the fatigue tests. The fatigue limit estimated using the Thermographic Method corresponds with good approximation to the value obtained from the experimental fatigue tests. The obtained results provided useful information for the development of methods and models to predict the fatigue behavior of welded T-joints in titanium alloy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
