N2-Methyl- or aryl-substituted 2-amino-4-aryl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinoline-3-carbonitriles were synthesized via a four-component, one-pot reaction of aromatic aldehyde, cyclohexanone, malononitrile, and amines in basic ionic liquid [bmim]OH with good to excellent yields. During this transformation, at least 11 bonds were cleaved and 7 new bonds were constructed.

α,α′-Bis(substituted-benzylidene)cycloalkanones were synthesized via a solvent-free cross-aldol condensation of aromatic aldehydes with cycloalkanones in the presence of a catalytic amount 1-methyl-3(2-(sulfooxy)ethyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium chloride at room temperature with excellent yields. The screening for optical properties indicated that the size of cycloalkanone has an influence on the fluorescence emission of products. Products coming from cyclohexanone have stronger fluorescence emission than those from cyclopentanone.

A facile and efficient synthesis of 14-aryl or alkyl-14H-dibenzo[a,j]xanthenes has been accomplished by treatment of β-naphthol with aryl or alkyl aldehydes catalyzed by 2-1′-methylimidazolium-3-yl-1-ethyl sulfate in ionic liquid [BMIM][BF4] at 80°C. The luminescence of products was studied in detail.

2,4,5-Triaryl-5H-chromeno[4,3-b]pyridines were synthesized from a three-component cascade reaction of 2′-hydroxyacetophenone, aromatic aldehyde, and ammonium acetate catalyzed by 2-1′-methylimidazolium-3-yl-1-ethyl sulfate under microwave irradiation. Nine new bonds and two new rings were formed in one-pot. J. Heterocyclic Chem., (2009).

A Troger’s base derivative (5,12-dimethyl-3,10-diphenyl-1,3,4,8,10,11-hexaazatetracyclo [6.6.1.02,6.09,13]pentadeca-2(6),4,9(13),11-tetraenes) was used as an efficient catalyst for the three-component Mannich reactions of aromatic aldehydes and aromatic amines with ketones in water at room temperature. This rapid reaction afforded the corresponding β-amino ketones in good yields with excellent stereoselectivity.

4-Aryl-6-phenylpyrimidin-2(1H)-ones were synthesised via a three-component one-pot cyclocondensation of aromatic aldehyde, acetophenone and urea catalysed by 0.2 ml (0.024 mol%) of concentration HCI in ionic liquid [BMIM][BF4]. The fluorescence properties of product and partial products’ efficient sensing of zinc ion were studied in detail. The structure of 4,6-diphenylpyrimidin-2(1H)-one was confirmed by X-ray analysis.

This is the first method using low-activity cyclohexanone as starting material to synthesize the targeted structure.
