15. Global patterns and drivers of soil dissolved organic carbon concentrations.

Abstract

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is the most active carbon pool in soils, which plays critical roles in soil carbon cycling, plant productivity, and global climate change. An accurate assessment of the quantity of DOC in the soil is essential for the detailed elucidation of ecosystem functions and services. Nevertheless, the global driving factors and distribution of soil DOC remain inadequately quantified due to the scarcity of large-scale data. Here, a comprehensive global database of 12807 soil DOC concentrations derived from 975 target papers in the literature was compiled. Detailed geographic locations, climate, and soil properties were also recorded as predictors of soil DOC. Machine learning techniques were employed to assess the relative importance of various predictors in the determination of soil DOC concentrations, which were subsequently extended for their prediction on a global scale. The worldwide soil DOC concentration spanned a wide range (0.04 to 7859 mg kg-1), averaging 222.78 mg kg-1. The 12 selected variables (including soil properties, month, climate, and ecosystem) explained 65 % of the variance in soil DOC concentrations. Elevation, soil clay, and soil organic carbon were three of the most important predictors. Global soil DOC concentration increased from the equator to the poles. The soil DOC stocks in the topsoil layer (0–30 cm) amounted to 12.17 Pg, with significant variations observed across different continents. These results are instrumental for informing strategies on soil management practices, ecosystem services, and the mitigation of climate change. Furthermore, our database can be combined with other carbon pools to explore the total soil carbon turnover and constrain Earth carbon models. Abstract

Denitrification plays a critical role in soil nitrogen (N) cycling, affecting N availability in agroecosystems. However, the challenges in direct measurement of denitrification products (NO, N2O, and N2) hinder our understanding of denitrification N losses patterns across the spatial scale. To address this gap, we constructed a data‐model fusion method to map the county‐scale denitrification N losses from China's rice fields over the past decade. The estimated denitrification N losses as a percentage of N application from 2009 to 2018 were 11.8 ± 4.0% for single rice, 12.4 ± 3.7% for early rice, and 11.6 ± 3.1% for late rice. The model results showed that the spatial heterogeneity of denitrification N losses is primarily driven by edaphic and climatic factors rather than by management practices. In particular, diffusion and production rates emerged as key contributors to the variation of denitrification N losses. These findings humanize a 38.9 ± 4.8 kg N ha−1 N loss by denitrification and challenge the common hypothesis that substrate availability drives the pattern of N losses by denitrification in rice fields. 37. Optimizing Soil and Fertilizer Phosphorus Management According to the Yield Response and Phosphorus Use Efficiency of Sugarcane in Southern China

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the suitable range of available phosphorus (P) and fertilizer application rate in a sugarcane-growing region with red soil in southern China. Thirty-five monitoring sites were selected to investigate the soil available P in relation to crop yield, P-use efficiency (PUE) and soil total P under four different P rates. Compared with the no-P treatment, all three treatments involving fertilizer P presented sugarcane yields increased to varying extents, with an average increase of 17.6–25.8%. The yield-increasing effects and PUE in each P treatment decreased with increasing soil available P. The agronomic critical values of available P for sugarcane according to the linear-linear, linear-plateau and Mitscherlich models were 27.7, 41.5 and 17.0 mg kg−1, respectively. When the response of the yield-increasing effects of P fertilizer to soil available P and the agronomic critical values of the three models were combined, the linear-linear model exhibited the best fit. An observable change occurred in the available P response to total P. After the change point, the available P increased dramatically with increasing total P, possibly leading to decreased PUE or even triggering water pollution. Therefore, 28–50 mg kg−1is the suggested range of suitable soil available P for the sugarcane-growing region. In addition, when the soil P budget and current relatively high level of available P are considered, applications of P fertilizer at 120 kg P2O5ha−1(1/2 the conventional P fertilizer rate) are recommended in this region.

39. Adsorption characteristics of dissolved organic carbon under different fertilization treatments in typical farmland soils in China

Abstract

In order to provide a theoretical basis for the evaluation of carbon sequestration potential, we analyzed the adsorption characteristics and influencing factors of dissolved organic carbon(DOC)in typical farmland soils with different fertilization treatments in China. Four typical farmland soils, namely black soil, gray desert soil, fluvo-aquic soil, and red soil, were selected to apply different fertilizer levels of no fertilizer(CK), chemical N fertilizer(N), chemical NP fertilizer(NP), chemical NPK fertilizer(NPK), and NPK plus organic manure(NPKM)to determine the DOC adsorption capacities by the equilibrium adsorption method. The results showed that the DOC adsorption capacities of different types of soils at the same equilibrium concentration were very different, and were generally in the order of gray desert soil and red soil>black soil>fluvo-aquic soil. Qmax appeared in the order of red soil>gray desert soil>black soil>fluvoaquic soil in various soils. Among them, the adsorption characteristics of each soil type were quite different under different fertilization treatments. The general trend of Qmax in the gray desert soil and fluvo-aquic soil under different fertilization treatments were NPKM>NPK> NP>N>CK and in red soil was NPKM>N>NPK>NP < CK. The Qmax values of the NPKM and NPK treatments were significantly higher than those of the other fertilization treatments in black soil, and that of NPKM was increased by 15.2% compared with that of CK. The K values in the four soils under different fertilization treatments showed that CK treatment was higher than other treatments. The desorption potential (b)values in the four soils increased as the soil organic matter(SOM)increased, and the b value of black soil was far higher than those of the other soil types. Redundancy analysis showed that soil properties could explain 90.61% of the total variation of the DOC adsorption characteristic parameters. The first redundancy factor explained 82.79% of the total variation, which was mainly related to the silt content, clay content, and pH, whereas the second redundancy factor explained 7.82% of the DOC adsorption characteristic parameters, which was mainly related to the SOM content. The results of this paper showed that different types of soils with more clay particles have greater adsorption capacity for DOC, and the same type of soil with more organic matter content has greater adsorption capacity for DOC.
