Feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) is a challenge for the veterinary practitioner since its etiology and treatments are still undefined. The present paper investigated the role of the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) in the severity of the FCGS. Oral mucosal biopsies obtained from 19 cats with FCGS were divided into two groups according to their FIV serology status. Later, the clinical lesion score was correlated with the histopathological grade of FCGS lesions and the degree of immunostaining in both groups. Most of the animals had significant histological changes; however, no correlation with FIV immunostaining intensity was observed. It was concluded that the presence of FIV infection or the animal’s seropositivity status does not seem to interfere with the severity of clinical signs nor the degree of histopathological changes when compared to the seronegative group.

This disease occurs naturally in either outbreaks or isolated cases, and exhibits low morbidity and high lethality. Besides BoHV-5 epidemiology, pathological findings and diagnosis were well known, the molecular interactions between host cell and BoHV-5 are poorly understood. Molecular biology techniques such as quantitative PCR (qPCR) and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) are important tools to study virus and host cell interactions. In this study we infected MDBK cells and use the extracted mRNA at 0, 6, 12, 18 and 24h post infection (pi) to analyse BoHV-5 (bICP0, UL9 e US4) and host cell gene (GAPDH) expression using qPCR and 1h, 6h and 24h pi in the RNA-seq study. Mock-infected cells were used to control purpouse. The qPCR releveled that the three BoHV-5 genes showed the same expression behavior during the infection and the GAPDH gene were down-regulated in the infected group. At least 900 genes were differentially expressed during BoHV-5 in each moment analysed by RNA-seq. These genes were up- or down-regulated and mainly associated with cell cycle, interleukin production, inflammatory cells chemotaxis, DNA damage and repair, response to virus, apoptosis, oxidation-reduction process, and ubiquitination pathways. The results demonstrate new insights about BoHV-5 and bovine cells interactions and could be a starting point to new researches and to better understand the pathology of this virus

Made available in DSpace on 2020-12-10T18:04:15Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2013-01-01 Background: Choroid plexus tumors are uncommon neoplasms derived from the neuroepithelium that covers the ventricular cavity and the central canal of the spinal cord that are characterized by papillar aspect and intraventricular growth. It occurs more commonly in dogs, but it has been reported in horses, cows, ferrets and is rare in cats. After the meningiomas and gliomas, choroid plexus tumors are the third encephalic tumors in dogs. In veterinary medicine, there are not many actual reports of this type of neoplasia, therefore, the aim of this paper was to report a case of a choroid plexus papilloma in a poodle dog. Case: A six year old dog, female, poodle, was admitted at the Veterinary Hospital of the Sao Paulo State University 'Julio de Mesquita Filho' with a complaint of seizures for 15 days, blindness and head tilt to the right side. At the neurological examination, it had depression, head tilt to the right, circling and ataxia, postural reactions deficits, absent menace response, absent light pupillary reflex with mydriasis and augmented patellar reflex. The patient was submitted to blood harvest to perform CBC count and biochemical profile (renal and hepatic), which were normal. The cerebrospinal fluid analysis presented a discrete raise of proteins. The animal was treated with phenobarbital and prednisone, under suspicion of inflammatory disease or encephalic neoplasia. The patient developed a progressive paresis of the four limbs and the seizures remained unaltered. After approximately one month of the first consultation, the dog was admitted in status epileticus, without success of control. Necropsy revealed flattening of convolutions due to cerebral edema, dilatation of the lateral ventricles (hydrocephalus) and the presence of a greyish nodule, soft and measuring 0.6 x 0.8 cm in length coming out of the fourth ventricle and extending laterally between the cerebellum and brainstem and cranially to the thalamus. At the cut of the tissue, it presented a dark area at the region of the thalamus. Neoplastic tissue was composed of cuboidal to columnar epithelial cells with oval and regular nuclei, supported by richly vascular stroma, arranged in papillae. Discussion: Choroid plexus papillomas are tumors that originate in the choroid plexus epithelium. Affected dogs usually have six or more years, earlier than most brain tumors. However, cases have been observed in younger dogs, and dogs affected by carcinoma are generally older than those affected by the papilloma. In dogs, the tumor occurs most commonly in the fourth ventricle, as in the present report, but can also occur in the third ventricle and the lateral ventricles. The clinical signs in patients with choroid plexus tumors are varied depending on the location of the tumor in the central nervous system, but may include behavioral changes, ataxia, paresis, seizures, circling, cranial nerve and proprioceptive reflexes changes. Macroscopically, the choroid plexus papilloma is a well-defined mass, expansive, granular to papillary, grayish-white to red color. Microscopically, this tumor resembles the choroid plexus and have arboriform and vascular stroma which is coated by a single layer of cuboidal to columnar epithelial cells. The findings were consistent with choroid plexus papilloma located in the fourth ventricle. Bovine meningoencephalitis is a viral infection caused by BHV-5, a doublestranded DNA and enveloped virus, that belongs to the Herpesviridae family, subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae. Meningoencephalitis mainly occurs in young animals, causing individual deaths or outbreaks with low morbidity and high mortality. The disease has no seasonal character or predilection for breed or gender. Outbreaks of meningoencephalitis have been reported associated with stressful factors like weaning, vaccinations, transport, changes in feeding. The final diagnosis is based on clinical, epidemiological, gross and microscopic findings and virus isolation associated with others techniques like immunoperoxidase, endonucleases restriction and PCR. Wherever, virus isolation is no always possible due the distance of farms and time from animal death to the samples collection. Immunohistochemistry and PCR are better diagnostic tools in this cases. Besides this two techniques could be used in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. The aim of this study was to describe the histological changes in the CNS of BHV-5 experimentally infected calves and associate it with the PCR and IHC results. For this purpose, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded CNS tissue from previously BHV-5 inoculated calves (Cunha, 2010) were microscopically evaluated and were tested by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All animals presented non-suppurative meningoencephalitis that had variable distribution among the cases and among the various sections of brain regions in each case. The cerebral cortex had more accentuated lesions. From 108 evaluated areas, 32.41% and 35.19% were positives by IHC and PCR, respectively. The IHQ and PCR positive areas had more accentuated microscopic lesions. These findings extend the knowledge about the BHV-5 distribution in the CNS of calves and show that IHC and PCR could be useful

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2010-12-01 The present study reports the occurrence of lead poisoning in a male, 2 year-old mongrel dog attended at UNESP Botucatu Veterinary Hospital. The animal was brought to the hospital with claim of gastrointestinal and nervous disturbs for 10 days, worsening in the last 24 hours. After unsuccessfully attempts to control status epileticus, the animal died. Hematological evaluation revealed significant rubricytosis and basophilic stippling, highly suggestive of lead poisoning. Serum lead concentration confirmed toxic levels of this element. Necropsy evidenced the presence of foreign bodies in stomach (one stone and two metallic objects) and, microscopically, characteristic inclusions in renal parenchyma. Fragments obtained from liver and kidneys revealed lead concentrations of 0, 8 μg/g and 25 μg/g, respectively, which in association to clinical signs of saturnism, determined the diagnosis of lead poisoning. - Abstract
Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease with a global impact. Brucellasuisis one of the most pathogenic species to humans, requiring different measures for the control and/or eradication of the disease. The serological investigation for brucellosis was performed in pigs, horses, dogs, and cattle on a farm with a history of abortion in sows and necropsy of a boar with severe necrosuppurative orchitis. One sow, two cows, and two dogs reveled positive to Rose Bengal Test (RBT), although only the sow had a confirmatory outcome in 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME). The 2-ME-positive sow was euthanized and microbiological culture of lymph nodes and liver followed by biochemical characterization allowed phenotypic characterization of Brucellasuisbiotype 1. PCR multiplex Bruce-ladder and Suis-ladder enabled molecular confirmation, respectively, of Brucellasuisand biotype 1. The transmission aspects of B.suisto pigs and other domestic species, the combination of diagnostic procedures to diagnosis, as well as human health concerns of brucellosis are discussed.

CANCER in dogs , *VETERINARY oncology , *CHOROID plexus , *CEREBRAL edema , *TUMORS - Abstract
Background: Choroid plexus tumors are uncommon neoplasms derived from the neuroepithelium that covers the ventricular cavity and the central canal of the spinal cord that are characterized by papillar aspect and intraventricular growth. Case: A six year old dog, female, poodle, was admitted at the Veterinary Hospital of the São Paulo State University 'Júlio de Mesquita Filho' with a complaint of seizures for 15 days, blindness and head tilt to the right side. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Presently, the predisposition of obese bitches to tumor development has been studied. In women, it is known that obesity may be associated with the appearance of breast tumors. In companion animals this data is still scarce, mainly associating the clinic of the patient with laboratory and histological findings. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and laboratory aspects of bitches with breast neoplasia, investigating whether they are related to obesity. Four groups of bitches, either castrated or whole, were divided into: (G1) bitches without breast tumor and normal body condition score (GCE), (G2) bitches without breast tumor and obese, (G3) bitches with tumor of breast and normal ECC, (G4) bitches with breast and obese tumors. The Body Condition Score (ECC), Canine Body Mass Index (IMCC), blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, cytopathological and histopathological examination were evaluated. The non-defined animals were the most present in the study (67.5%). In the analysis of the Canine Body Mass Index there was a statistical difference between group G2 and G4. Glucose also differed statistically between the G1xG3 and G2xG4 groups. Therefore, it was observed that obesity did not trigger clinical and laboratory changes in bitches. No relationship was found between ECC and the IMCC with the histological type or malignancy of the mammary neoplasia, since both the ideal and the overweight group had obese malignant histological types. There was a limitation on the use of canine body mass index in relation to body proportionality. Of the 28 tumors evaluated, carcinoma in mixed tumor was the most present malignant histological type and benign was adenomioepithelioma.

Although the use of elastic cartilage of animal origin, as xenograft, is known in the veterinary routine, its properties and the reactions that provoke in the organism of the animal are still little known, especially when treated in alkaline solution. Knowledge of these particularities may allow greater safety in the development of new biomaterials for routine human and veterinary clinical and surgical procedures. Thus, the main objective of this study was to analyze the biocompatibility between bovine elastic cartilage treated with alkaline solution and untreated cartilage implanted in Wistar rats. Cartilages were obtained from bovine ears and half of them were treated in alkaline solution and the other half were not treated. Regardless of the treatment, the cartilages were sterilized in ethylene oxide. Cartilages were implanted in the subcutaneous region of the dorsal region, between the scapulae in rats (N = 50), and SG (N = 25) received treated cartilages and CG (N = 25) received untreated cartilages. Five animals from each group were euthanized on days 3, 7, 14, 21 and 42 and the macroscopic characteristics triggered by the implant were evaluated and staged as fibroses, clots and infections. Histopathological evaluations were performed to verify the tissue reaction, qualifying and quantifying the inflammatory process. The results show that SG has a smaller amount of inflammatory infiltrate and better organization of the connective tissue in relation to CG. Cartilage degradation patterns in SG showed a decrease in the cartilage matrix in relation to CG and there was no significant difference in the neovascularization process between the groups. It was concluded that the alkaline treatment provided better biocompatibility for the elastic cartilage when implanted in the subcutaneous of rats.
