The number of PhD graduates has been increasing yearly, but the job opportunities in Academia remain the same. This pattern will intensify the pressure on PhD students to look for other possible careers. Past work experiences, due to their developmental potential, occupy a prominent place in the career development paradigm. However, more is needed to know about the professional path of PhD students before they entered the PhD. This study aimed to explore PhD students’ previous professional experience, focusing on the extent to which previous experiences determine students’ perception and development of career expectations. A quantitative research approach was followed among 377 PhD students at a Portuguese Higher Education Institution (HEI). Results show that regardless of their previous work experiences, PhD students value career options related to research, preferably within Academia. However, in terms of career development, students who have diverse work experiences reported feeling more prepared to put into practice actions to prepare their career than students with professional experience in Academia or no professional experience. This study confirms that PhD students’ previous work experiences pay off by making a difference in the feeling of preparedness for career development, whereas in terms of student’s future career expectations after the PhD, it did not allow for a definite answer, as it seems that all professional groups prefer similar research-oriented paths. Intervention must be done simultaneously on an individual and contextual level, allowing students to have experiences during the PhD and promoting the reflection on these experiences so students may feel more prepared to develop their future careers. For companies, intervention should focus on showing the PhDs’ added value and also the potential of incorporating the R&D dimensions within their jobs. Failing to do so may contribute to enhancing the employability challenges faced by the growing number of PhD holders.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyse a programme designed to welcome and train new employees, implemented in a chemical industry, privileging the transmission of know-how as a dynamic process where learning is co-constructed in the course of the activity. Design/methodology/approach: The design of the programme was based on the analysis of the work performed in real context by operators and supervisors. The data about the programme's evaluation were collected by questionnaire, assessing the trainees' global development and the impact of the training programme (after six months). Findings: This paper involves designing, planning and implementing "4 × 4 Training", a training programme for young trainees. Combining in-class training with an extensive component of on-the-job mentoring, the programme involved trainees, mentors and internal trainers, monitored by work psychologists. The results show both the trainees and the mentors evaluate the programme positively. The professional transmission stands out as an activity that is thought through and defined in group, assisted by a mentoring relationship of mutual learning. Practical implications: When planning and developing intergenerational transmission processes, it is crucial to consider the organisational conditions, to involve from an early stage the key players of each work situation and to guarantee that the mentoring activity and the productive activity overlap coherently. Originality/value: It is an innovative process to integrate trainees in the chemical industry in Portugal. The methodological approach and the findings provide a first framework that justifies the relevance of the transmission of know-how through a real work situation.

The aim of this work was to correlate parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels with urinary magnesium excretion in patients with non-dialysis dependent CKD.Methods: Cross-sectional study. Concentrations of creatinine, magnesium, calcium, phosphate, parathyroid hormone (PTH), 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were determined in blood samples. The assessment of urinary magnesium levels was performed by means of total daily excretion and by the excretion fraction (FEMg).Results: The study evaluated 163 patients with a mean age of 60.7 ± 11.7 years and 51.0% were male. In the highest quartile of PTH (> 89.5pg/mL), the mean levels of FEMg and ALP were higher (p< 0.05). In the unadjusted regression analysis, the following variables were related to serum PTH levels: FEMg (odds ratio (OR) = 1.12; 95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.02– 1.23), calcium (OR = 0.45; 95% CI: 0.22– 0.90), ALP (OR = 1.02; 95% CI: 1.00– 1.03) and eGFR (OR = 0.92; 95% CI: 1.00– 1.03). After an adjusted analysis, only one FEMg and ALP will remain correlated with PTH.Conclusion: In patients with non-dialysis dependent CKD, FEMg and ALP were some variables that remained associated with PTH.Keywords: magnesium, parathyroid hormone, kidney diseases

Neste trabalho, objetivamos construir uma compreensão sobre o estágio na Licenciatura em Letras que se proponha a assumir um dos desafios colocados à formação docente: preparar o futuro profissional para criar possibilidades de aprendizagem em contextos diversos cultural e socialmente. Tal diversidade é refletida a partir da crítica à colonialidade como modo de subjetivação. Argumentamos que o lugar do estágio, na sua interseção entre a prática acadêmica e profissional, configura-se como um cenário potente para uma educação cujos projetos de ensino orientem-se por um trabalho que se ocupe em refletir e diminuir desigualdades sociais ao fazer uma pedagogia decolonial que aposte na mudança de atitudes. Para isso, apresentamos reflexões de práticas desenvolvidas por nós na orientação do estágio de Língua Portuguesa em duas universidades federais mineiras, concluindo com a proposição de três princípios para uma formação docente decolonial. Situo este estudo no contexto da aprovação de um projeto de lei intitulado “Infância sem pornografia”, submetido à câmara de vereadores da cidade de Juiz de Fora – MG, o qual fora proposto com o efeito de judicialização dos/as professores/as da cidade que discutissem temas como gênero e sexualidade, sob a alcunha de “pornografia” pela autoria do projeto de lei. Uma vez proposta a lei, tal texto foi objeto de discussão em diversas sessões na câmara municipal entre janeiro de 2017 e abril de 2018. Diferentes discursos destes eventos foram entextualizados (BAUMAN ; BRIGGS, 1990) em diferentes mídias jornalísticas. Neste artigo, coloco sob escrutínio o texto-base da lei, bem como notícias divulgadas no jornal local, em uma análise a partir dos conceitos de trajetórias textuais, entextualizações e indexicalidade (BAUMAN ; BRIGGS, 1990; BLOMMAERT, 2005). Ao analisar tal material, observo como discursos (GEE, 2005) sobre gênero e sexualidade são indexicalizados. Além de colocar em jogo disputas sobre os sentidos do que vem a ser “pornográfico”, produzindo um “pânico moral” (MISKOLCI, 2007), tais textos indicam que seus apoiadores não consideram os efeitos perlocucionários (AUSTIN, 1990) dos enunciados da lei no que tange ao trabalho dos professores da rede pública local, além de constituir-se por diferentes recursos linguísticos que lançam o tema como uma questão de partidarismo político e não de interesse público. Ao final, proponho uma reflexão sobre a educação e o papel desempenhado pela referida lei municipal nos avanços do conservadorismo.

Actual substrates unavoidably possess, to some extent, defects and dirt, which motivate understanding the impact due to their presence. The presence of a substrate naturally breaks symmetries. Additionally, it effectively reduces spatial dimensionality, which favors fluctuation-dominated behavior, but it also provides a multitude of possible interactions. We show evidence of novel behavior in the case of polymer mass transport at a crystalline substrate when a single attractive impurity is present. Specifically, we introduce a model system describing how an attractive impurity pins adsorbed polymers on a substrate. We propose a novel mechanism to explain the size scaling dependence of the diffusion coefficient as D∼N−3/2 for polymers with N monomers. Additionally, the size dependence of the diffusion coefficient scales can be described as D∼N−δ, with δ=1.51 as determined from extensive simulations.

Vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation (VGAM) is a very rare congenital vascular malformation. Also known as the “median prosencephalic arteriovenous fistula”, VGAM is a subtype of dural arteriovenous fistula. It is believed that the development of VGAM occurs between weeks 6 and 11 of embryo development. Prenatal diagnosis is based on fetal ultrasound, between the second and third trimesters. Despite prenatal diagnosis, this congenital malformation is associated with high morbidity and mortality. We report the case of a 38-year-old primigravida referred at 32 weeks of gestational age to our Prenatal Diagnosis Unit for a suspected VGAM. The remaining fetal assessment was normal. At 38 weeks, a male newborn weighing 3,825 g was born. The postnatal evaluation confirmed VGAM. Endovascular treatment was performed at 4 and 5 months, without complications. The patient is currently 9 months old and has a normal neurodevelopment.

The incidence of single fetal death in twin pregnancy varies from 0.5% - 6.8%, leaving the surviving fetus with increased morbi-mortality. The prognosis is worse in monochorionic pregnancies. In addressing these cases it should be noted referral to tertiary center with differentiated perinatal support, induction of fetal lung maturation and termination of pregnancy if there’s loss of fetal well-being or possibility of maternal complications and suspected neurological sequelae in the surviving fetus. The risk of iatrogenic prematurity should always be weighed with the possible consequences arising from the fetus staying in a hostile uterine environment. The authors describe a case of a 32-year-old pregnant woman with monochorionic/diamniotic twin pregnancy diagnosed with death of one of the fetuses due to fetal growth restriction and velamentous insertion of the umbilical cord at 30 weeks of gestation. The couple opted for termination of pregnancy at 33 weeks after documentation of brain changes in the surviving fetus.

Neste artigo, temos como objetivo principal construir uma compreensão sobre como professores/as em formação inicial engajam-se em práticas de (multi)letramentos no Instagram, de modo a participar socialmente da divulgação de informações sobre direitos humanos, com o intuito não só de formar o profissional crítico e ético no respeito à diversidade, como preconizado nas Diretrizes para Formação de Professores (BRASIL, 2015), mas também refletir sobre práticas que sejam plausíveis de serem desenvolvidas em salas de aula da Educação Básica. Para isso, articulamos três temas: os Direitos Humanos e sua apropriação pelo Plano Nacional de Educação em Direitos Humanos (BRASIL, 2007); os eventos e práticas de multiletramentos (ROJO, 2012; BARTON & LEE, 2015); e relação destes temas em uma proposta pedagógica desenvolvida por estudantes da Licenciatura em Letras da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, que culminou na produção de perfis do Instagram voltados a divulgação de informações relativas ao campo dos Direitos Humanos. Como resultado, foram identificadas práticas de letramentos multimodais, multilíngues, além de práticas de entextualização. Implicitamente, são inferidas as práticas de leitura, análise, seleção e avaliação de informações, bem como de produção de texto multimodal para composição das postagens. Estas contaram com textos diversificados: imagens do tipo slide, manchetes de notícias, poemas com fotos, dentre outros. No plano temático, as postagens foram igualmente variadas, privilegiando a noção de diversidade cultural. Questões ligadas a própria concepção de diretos humanos e temáticas sobre gênero e feminismo tiveram preponderância quando pensadas em relação ao tema indígena, por exemplo. Este estudo orienta-se por uma perspectiva de educação transgressora (HOOKS, 2013), onde estudantes e professores são engajados a participação conjunta na aprendizagem.

Neste ensaio, proponho construir uma reflexão sobre como dois contos da obra O Sol na Cabeça, do escritor carioca contemporâneo Giovani Martins, produzem sentidos sobre uma configuração de práticas que produzem tensões em marcadores de masculinidades. São evocados nos contos temas como virilidade, violência, amizade e paternidade. Foram selecionados os contos “Rolézim” e “Roleta-russa”, cujas narrativas trazem à cena conversas de “homem para homem” e engendram as práticas colocadas sob escrutínio neste trabalho.

Como a humanização do trabalho em saúde se realiza em ato? Que mecanismos engendram relações de poder na tarefa clínica? As malformações congénitas do tracto genital feminino são relativamente comuns e frequentemente assintomáticas. Apesar do resultado da gravidez poder ser favorável, estão descritos desfechos obstétricos adversos em mulheres com malformações uterinas. Os autores apresentam o caso clínico de uma emergência obstétrica, que realça a possibilidade de um desfecho muito adverso e raro, de rotura uterina da hemicavidade esquerda num útero bicórneo longe do termo, às 18 semanas de gestação, numa grávida com antecedentes de cesariana na hemicavidade direita e com placenta increta. Um útero malformado, com cavidade de tipo rudimentar, apresenta menor distensibilidade da parede com a progressão da gravidez e facilita o desenvolvimento de formas anormais de placentação, aumentando o risco de rotura uterina no primeiro e segundo trimestres. O conhecimento da existência de uma malformação uterina no período pré-concepcional reveste-se de importância fundamental.
