Abstract

Copper tungsten oxide films are deposited with the help of reactive high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) in an argon/oxygen gas mixture. Two magnetrons, one equipped with a tungsten target and the other with a copper target, are employed. The HiPIMS discharge is operated with a repetition frequency of f = 100 Hz. Pulse widths of 100 and 20 μ s separated by 25 μ s are chosen for the tungsten and copper target, respectively. Films deposited on two different glass substrates [soda lime glass and fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass] are characterized by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and ellipsometry. Photoelectrochemical activity was investigated by linear voltammetry. The composition and crystal structure of as-deposited and annealed films are found to depend on the deposition conditions. Annealed films deposited on FTO glass are composed of WO3 and CuWO4 or Cu2WO4 crystal phases. Films deposited on soda lime glass are subject to sodium diffusion into the films during annealing and the formation of Na2W2O7 and Na2W4O 13 phases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Warts, hypogammaglobulinemia, infections, and myelokathexis (WHIM) syndrome (WS) is a combined immunodeficiency caused by gain-of-function mutations in the C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) gene. We characterize a unique international cohort of 66 patients, including 57 (86%) cases previously unreported, with variable clinical phenotypes. Of 17 distinct CXCR4 genetic variants within our cohort, 11 were novel pathogenic variants affecting 15 individuals (23%). All variants affect the same CXCR4 region and impair CXCR4 internalization resulting in hyperactive signaling. The median age of diagnosis in our cohort (5.5 years) indicates WHIM syndrome can commonly present in childhood, although some patients are not diagnosed until adulthood. The prevalence and mean age of recognition and/or onset of clinical manifestations within our cohort were infections 88%/1.6 years, neutropenia 98%/3.8 years, lymphopenia 88%/5.0 years, and warts 40%/12.1 years. However, we report greater prevalence and variety of autoimmune complications of WHIM syndrome (21.2%) than reported previously. Patients with versus without family history of WHIM syndrome were diagnosed earlier (22%, average age 1.3 years versus 78%, average age 5 years, respectively). Patients with a family history of WHIM syndrome also received earlier treatment, experienced less hospitalization, and had less end-organ damage. This observation reinforces previous reports that early treatment for WHIM syndrome improves outcomes. Only one patient died; death was attributed to complications of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The variable expressivity of WHIM syndrome in pediatric patients delays their diagnosis and therapy. Early-onset bacterial infections with severe neutropenia and/or lymphopenia should prompt genetic testing for WHIM syndrome, even in the absence of warts.

Abstract

Generation of singly charged Ar + and Ti + , doubly charged Ar 2 + and Ti 2 + , and of Ar 2 + and Ti 2 + dimer ions in a high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) discharge with a Ti cathode was investigated. Energy-resolved mass spectrometry was employed. The argon gas pressures varied between 0.5 and 2.0 Pa. Energy spectra of monomer ions are composed of low- and high-energy components. The energetic position of the high-energy component is approximately twice as large for doubly charged ions compared to singly charged ions. Intensities of Ar 2 + and Ti 2 + dimer ions are considerably smaller during HiPIMS compared to dc magnetron sputtering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A method is introduced that allows suppressing unwanted effects of target poisoning during reactive high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (R-HiPIMS) employed for deposition of oxide films. The method, based on higher reactivity of excited/activated oxygen species, is studied and demonstrated on TiO2 films deposited in R-HiPIMS discharge running very close to the metallic mode with a high deposition rate. An external source of energetic plasma that activates oxygen gas, delivered to the vicinity of the substrate, is combined with conventional R-HiPIMS of the Ti target. The activated oxygen species enable reducing the total flow rate, which simultaneously results in suppression of the target poisoning effect. Abstract

Angular distribution measurements have been carried out during High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS) of a titanium target and deposition of titanium and titanium oxide films. The HiPIMS system was operated at a repetition frequency f=100 Hz with a duty cycle of 1%. Langmuir probe diagnostics has been carried out at a distance of 7.5 cm from the target at four different angles with respect to the surface normal of the target. Film properties were investigated by means of SEM, XR, and GIXD, and a dependence of film thickness and crystalline structure on the deposition angle is observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Exact analytical solutions derived for the nonlinear wave equation for a lossless saturable Kerr-like medium help estimate the TE power-dependent disperse relations and guided modes of a waveguide structure and directional coupler. The critical power defined as the input power level beyond which it is not possible to switch 100% of power between the coupler guides is a mathematical misrepresentation in the saturable and nonsaturable Kerr media. The single waveguide structures lack critical power.

Abstract

The total power density at substrate is measured during deposition of pure titanium films in an asymmetrical bipolar unbalanced pulsed dc magnetron sputtering system. Results show benefit of pulsing magnetron above dc operation for increasing ion power per depositing neutral in ion assisted deposition process.
