We propose to develop a new social platform for surveil- lance purposes whose main goal is to reduce the citizens’ fear of crime while helping them to make sense of their fears through interactions with the other members of the social surveillance network. Dynamic perception maps will be estimated by the social surveillance system in order to measure the sense of safety of the citizens. These maps will be useful to increase citizens awareness of their surroundings, and highlight “hot area” to make more enjoyable in the urban area.

Personal blogs represent a new emergent phenomenon that draws attention of psycholo-gists. In this framework, the present paper discusses the opportunity of evaluating both bloggers’ per-sonalities and their social relationships quality using blog as a new research methodology. Blog usagedata, Big Five personality traits, Interpersonal relationships quality and Internet addiction were evalu-ated in a population of 30 Italian bloggers. Results about Big Five personality traits showed no specificpersonality patterns leading people to become bloggers. However, Italian bloggers describe them-selves as individuals considerably open to experience, very affiliative or friendly and capable of man-aging their interpersonal problems. Despite their intensive blogging, they also exhibited low levels ofInternet Addiction. Further qualitative researches, however, should be performed for deeply analyzinghow bloggers manage their self-image.

Allo scopo di esplorare le abilità cognitive coinvolte e stimolate dall'uso di tecnologie quali LEGO® Mindstorm e KODU Game Lab (KGL), è stato realizzato uno studio su un gruppo di studenti frequentanti il primo anno della scuola secondaria di primo grado. I risultati della ricerca dimostrano che l'utilizzo di queste due tecnologierichiede l'applicazione di processi cognitivi e competenze accademiche differenti. Nello specifico, di LEGO® Mindstorm sollecita maggiormente l'impiego di abilità di ragionamento logico-deduttivo, di problem solving geometrico, di lettura e comprensione del testo, nonché la capacità di elaborare velocemente target visivi. L'uso di KGL coinvolge, invece, la memoria di lavoro visuo-spaziale, la capacità di aggiornamento delle informazioni e le abilità di lettura e comprensione del testo. Entrambe le tecnologie, inoltre, risultano efficaci ai fini dell'incremento delle abilità di memoria di lavoro visuo-spaziale.

The present paper is aimed at analyzing the process of building and programming robots as a metacognitive tool. Quantitative data and qualitative observations from a research performed in a sample of children attending an Italian primary school are described in this work. Results showed that robotics activities may be intended as a new metacognitive environment that allows children to monitor themselves and control their learning actions in an autonomous and self-centered way.

In questo lavoro è descritta una revisione sistematica di 26 studi empirici che, negli ultimi 10 anni (2009-2019), hanno esplorato le motivazioni associate all’uso di giochi mobili di realtà aumentata (i.e., Pokèmon GO) e la personalità degli utenti. Considerato il crescente sviluppo tecnologico di giochi che coniugano l’Intelligenza Artificiale con la Realtà Aumentata, i risultati qualitativi presentati nel presente articolo possono configurarsi come utili criteri di segmentazione del mercato potenziale dei clienti di giochi basati su tecnologia mobile.

In the present paper, we tested the hypothesis that neuroticism moderates the relationship between past-negative or present-fatalistic temporal perspectives and Facebook addiction. A sample of 233 Facebook users (Female: 66%, mean age: 21.4 years) filled self-reports measures of temporal perspective, personality traits, and Facebook Addiction. Results at two moderation models showed that only past-negative significantly predicts Facebook addiction through neuroticism's moderation effect. Individuals with a negative temporal orientation to the past, who are also characterized by a high neuroticism level, were more addicted to Facebook. Peculiar associations between past-negative temporal perspective with neuroticism personality trait in determining Facebook addiction were theoretically discussed. Practical implications of the study are also highlighted.

Introduzione La letteratura ha dimostrato che la memoria autobiografica assolve tre ampie funzioni: dirigere il comportamento futuro, favorire la connessione sociale e promuovere un senso di continuità della propria identità (Bluck, Alea, Habermas e Rubin, 2005). Recenti studi empirici supportano l’idea che l’uso funzionale della memoria autobiografica sia associato ai diversi contenuti informativi che le persone condividono sui social media (Seyfi & Soydas, 2017). Parimenti, una considerevole quantità di ricerche ha evidenziato l’associazione tra le informazioni testuali o visive condivise su Facebook e specifici tratti disposizionali della personalità (p.e. Ryan & Xenos, 2011; Seidman, 2013). Il presente contributo mira quindi ad analizzare le differenze individuali nell’uso funzionale della memoria autobiografica e nelle caratteristiche di personalità, definite secondo il modello dei cinque fattori (McCrae & Costa, 1999), in relazione alle informazioni testuali e visive relative agli eventi di vita che gli utenti condividono su Facebook. Metodo Ha partecipato alla ricerca un gruppo di 193 utenti Facebook (F=148; M=45; età media = 22.8 anni; DS= 6.8) a cui sono stati somministrati due questionari di self-report, mirati a valutare le funzioni della memoria autobiografica e le dimensioni di personalità, e un’apposita check-list per la valutazione della frequenza e la tipologia delle informazioni condivise su Facebook. Risultati Un modello di mediazione basato su path analysis ha evidenziato che l’estroversione e l’apertura mentale sono predittori significativi delle tre funzioni della memoria autobiografica; il nevroticismo delle funzioni direttiva e di continuità del self e la coscienziosità della sola funzione direttiva. Le funzioni di continuità del self esercitano inoltre un effetto di mediazione nella relazione tra le dimensioni di personalità relative a estroversione, nevroticismo e apertura mentale e la frequenza a condividere informazioni visive su Facebook (i.e. fotografie). Conclusioni I risultati ottenuti offrono un’evidente conferma del ruolo esercitato dalle differenze individuali nelle funzioni della memoria autobiografica e nelle caratteristiche di personalità nella condivisione degli eventi di vita su Facebook.

Background. A growing body of research has highlighted the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on women’s mental health. Previous studies showed that women have higher levels of depression, anxiety and PTSD, and worse psychological adjustment than men, which also persisted after the earlier phase of the pandemic. This study aimed to evaluate changes in women’s psychological distress during the pandemic and to evaluate the factors that have a more significant impact in predicting women’s psychological distress. Methods. This two-wave longitudinal study (T1 = Italian first lockdown, and T2 = second phase, when the restrictive measures were eased) involved 893 women (Mage = 36.45, SD = 14.48). Participants provided demographic and health data as well as measures of psychological distress, emotion regulation processes, and ability to tolerate uncertainty. Results. No significant changes were found in women’s psychological distress between T1 and T2, i.e., during and after the first lockdown. Lower social stability status and higher maladaptive emotional coping predicted high psychological distress. Conclusions. Results showed that modifiable psychological variables play a central role in predicting distress and indicated that emotion regulation interventions might be helpful in increasing psychological resilience and mitigating the adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic within the female population.

The switching from traditional to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic was challenging for students, determining an increase in physical and mental health problems. The current paper applied a two-step cluster analysis in a large sample of n = 1028 university students (Mage = 21.10 years, SD = 2.45 years; range: 18–30 years; 78.4% females). Participants responded to an online survey exploring neuroticism, trait/state anxiety, general self-efficacy, academic motivation, fear of COVID-19, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on physical and mental health, and the help requests. Results showed two significant clusters of students having a Maladaptive Academic Profile (n = 456; 44.4%) or an Adaptive Academic Profile (n = 572; 55.6%). Significant differences were found between the two clusters, where students belonging to the Maladaptive Academic Profile reported higher levels of neuroticism, higher dispositional and situational anxiety, and fear of COVID-19, and lower self-efficacy and academic motivation than students of the Adaptive Academic Profile cluster. In addition, more physical or mental health problems and help requests, mainly to partners during the COVID-19 pandemic, were found in the Maladaptive Academic Profile cluster compared to the Adaptive Academic Profile. Finally, the practical implications of the study’s results in implementing university counseling services as protective measures to contrast psychological distress in the long-term COVID-19 pandemic are discussed.

Nel presente lavoro esponiamo i risultati di alcune nostre ricerche, che hanno visto studenti di scuola secondaria di primo e secondo grado impegnati nella costruzione e programmazione comportamentale di piccoli robot mobili (LEGO® Mindstorms). Le esperienze da noi realizzate sono riconducibili alla cosiddetta Educational Robotics, che -ispirandosi all’approccio di Vygotskji e all’epistemologia post-piagetiana di Papert- concepisce i robot come “oggetti-con-cui-pensare o come “impalcature per la mente”. In linea con tale filone teorico, i nostri studi dimostrano che l’attività con i robot favorisce varie abilità visuo-costruttive, di ragionamento logico e di pensiero creativo. Le peculiari caratteristiche cognitive, ludiche e relazionali di tale attività, che richiede di integrare in modo cooperativo la fisicità dell’hardware con la programmazione del software, la rendono inoltre un efficace strumento di supporto nella riabilitazione di soggetti con deficit cognitivi. Ne deriva che la robotica educativa può rappresentare una nuova ed interessante frontiera per la ricerca psicologica e per le sue più avanzate applicazioni.

Background: It still remains unclear whether problematic social media use (PSMU) is a cause or a consequence of psychological distress. The present study aimed to investigate the temporal relationships between PSMU and psychological distress through a three-wave panel study (between April and July 2020, with an interval of 1 month between each period of time). Methods: 3,912 adult Italian participants were surveyed during the COVID-19 pandemic for psychological distress (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale) and PSMU (Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale). Random-Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Models were applied to disaggregate between-person from within-person associations as regards PSMU and an individual’s distress. Results: On a between-person level we found that adults with higher PSMU also reported heightened levels of psychological distress across the three waves. However, on a within-person level, no cross-lagged associations were found between changes in distress and subsequent changes in PSMU and vice versa. The results were largely unchanged with the inclusion of participants’ gender and age or COVID-19-related fears as covariates, and when the three subscales of depression, anxiety and stress were examined in separate models. Conclusions: The current study suggests that the link between PSMU and psychological distress is mainly driven by trait-like differences and not by state-like individual changes over time.

The present study investigates the role of attentional style as a moderator variable between temporal perspective and social network addiction, since little is known about users’ cognitive variables involved in this kind of addictive behavior. To achieve this goal, a sample of 186 volunteers and anonymous social networking sites users (M = 34%; F = 66%; Mage = 22.54 years; SD = 3.94; range: 18 ÷ 45 years) participated in a cross-sectional study. All participants filled out self-report instruments measuring temporal perspective, internal vs. external attentional style, and social network addiction. The results align with the previous literature and show that present fatalistic and past negative time orientations are associated with social network addiction, whereas the future is a negative precursor. Moreover, a four-step hierarchical regression analysis showed that internal attentional style is a significant moderator of the relationship between high levels of temporal perspective and a high level of social network addiction. This result suggests that social network-addicted users are oriented toward internal stimuli such as their intrusive thoughts or feelings and that social network addiction is similar to obsessive compulsive disorders, depression, or anxiety. Despite its limitations, the present study could contribute to the efforts of clinicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, teachers, and all those who seek to combat social network addiction in developing treatment programs to reduce its harmful effects.

Several studies evidenced increased elevated symptomatology levels in anxiety, general stress, depression, and post-traumatic stress related to COVID-19. Real difficulties in the effective control of time that could be responsible for mental health issues and loss of vitality were also reported. Prior literature highlighted how perceived control over time significantly modulates anxiety disorders and promotes psychological well-being. To verify the hypothesis that perceived control over time predicts fear of COVID-19 and mental health and vitality mediate this relationship, we performed an online survey on a sample of 301 subjects (female = 68%; Mage = 22.12, SD = 6.29; age range = 18–57 years), testing a parallel mediation model using PROCESS macro (model 4). All participants responded to self-report measures of perceived control over time, COVID-19 fear, mental health, and vitality subscales of the Short-Form-36 Health Survey. Results corroborate the hypotheses of direct relationships between all the study variables and partially validate the mediation’s indirect effect. Indeed, mental health (a1b1 = −0.06; CI: LL = −0.11; UL = −0.01; p < 0.001) rather than vitality (a2b2 = −0.06; CI: LL = −0.09; UL = 0.03; n.s.) emerges as a significant mediator between perceived control over time and fear of COVID-19. Practical implications of the study about treatment programs based on perceived control over time and emotional coping to prevent fear and anxiety toward the COVID-19 pandemic are discussed.

Today, we witness the progress toward global COVID-19 vaccinations organized by countries worldwide. Experts say a mass vaccination plan is the only effective antidote against the spread of SARS-COV-2. However, a part of the world population refuses vaccination. The present study aimed to understand the impact of some individual variables on the intention to get vaccinated. Through a serial mediation model, we tested the influence of fear of COVID-19 on the intention to get vaccinated and the serial mediating effect of existential anxiety and conspiracy beliefs. Via a cross-sectional design this research was conducted with the participation of 223 French adults (Female: 69.5%; Male: 30.5%; Mage = 30.26, SD = 13.24; range: 18–75 years) who responded to an online survey. The results showed a positive relationship between fear of COVID-19 and intention to get vaccinated; however, when this fear was associated with high levels of existential anxiety through conspiracy beliefs, the intention to get vaccinated decreased. Our findings were in line with Terror Management Health Model, which states that, in facing health threats, humans may strive to reduce their own perceived vulnerability not only by engaging in healthy behaviors but also denying or avoiding death anxiety, as anti-vaxxers do.

Pokmon Go is a popular augmented reality mobile game. Players find imaginary creatures by wandering into the real world, which can then be collected and used in combat. In this paper an assessment of Pokmon Go early usage in the Italian community and of its correlates with the Big Five personality traits is given. The resulting profile of early PG player is one of a more Introverted, close person with high agreeability and conscientiousness. Extraversion and Stability are positively correlated with the collection part of the game, while Agreeableness is a negative predictor thereof. Openness is correlated to the level of proficiency. Display Omitted We assess Pokmon Go early usage and its correlates with the Big Five traits.Early PG player are more Introverted and Close, highly Agreeable and Conscientious.Extraversion and Stability are positively correlated with collection.Agreeableness is a negative predictor of collection.Openness is positively correlated to the level of proficiency reached in the game.

The studies reported analyze the factorial structure of Facebook Addiction Italian Questionnaire (FAIQ), a variant of 20-item Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT). In Study 1, we tested FAIQ psychometric properties using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). In Study 2, we performed a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to verify the FAIQ factorial structure identified through EFA. Results from CFA confirm the presence of a four-factor model accounting for 58 percent of total variance, plus a general higher order factor that best fits the data. Further relationships between FAIQ factor scores, personality, and Facebook usage have been explored.

This article reports a study exploring motivations of Pokémon Game use, individual differences related to personality traits, and game habits. First, it analyzed Pokémon GO motivations through exploratory factor analysis (EFA) by administering online the Pokémon GO Motivational Scale to a group of Italian gamers (N = 560). Successively, a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted testing three factorial models of Pokémon Game motivations on a selected random sample (N = 310). Results showed a three-factor model of Pokémon GO Game motivations (i.e. Personal Needs, Social Needs and Recreation), accounting for 68.9% of total variance plus a general higher order factor that best fits the data. Individual differences in Pokémon GO motivations and personality traits have been explored showing that high involved Pokémon GO players are introverted, low agreeableness, and conscientiousness people, driven by personal social and recreational needs. Reciprocal influences on motivational involvement, personality, and game habits were discussed.

The individuals’ cognitive skills, academic performance and their relationship with programming of robots or virtual learning environment is a topic of particular interest in the area of human-robot interaction. This paper presents a pilot study performed on a group of 36 lower secondary school students involved in a 32-hours laboratory based on the combination of LEGO Mindstorm NXT and Microsoft Kodu Game Lab (KGL) and aimed at programming first a robot and further a more complete virtual world based on a narrative-designed scenario. The findings of the research will be discussed in the light of the effectiveness of using robotics and virtual world programming as a meaningful and playful learning environment for improving cognition in children.

Facebook is becoming a pervasive entity as its social, cultural and media ramifications grow deep and entrenched in our daily life. Its nature of a complex system of interactions, bearing a strong similarity to networks built through individual choices and systems shaped by evolu- tionary pressure, makes it an interesting target for research. Scale-free Small World networks, recently popularized by Barabasi, are a topological class pertaining to both these domains, whose members have resilience to disruption and short intermediate connections between nodes. In this paper we show that the topological structure of a specific subset of Facebook, gathered using data from a self-report online questionnaire on its usage, is similar but measurably different from a scale-free Small World network. We conjecture that the reason for this counterintuitive result lies in the dynamics behind friendship requests. This con- cept may be extendable to the whole network and to other social networks, and is useful to understand Facebook strengths and weaknesses, and to forecast its evolution.

The Italian version of the Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT) was administered online to a sample of Italian chatters (n = 236) who were different in terms of gender, age, and occupation. Results revealed that young users are more at-risk subjects for Internet addiction than adults, perceiving a compromised social and individual quality of their life that led them to make a compensatory usage of the Internet. Similarly, employed users perceive their social and individual quality of life as more compromised by the Internet than students. Moreover, subjects who declared spending much time online obtained IAT scores higher than others in all the IAT subscales. Finally, nightly users are more at-risk subjects for developing an Internet addiction disorder, diminishing their individual quality of life and disabling their time control.

Questo contributo si propone di sottolineare l’importanza di alcune competenze cognitive, detti prerequisiti, che sono implicate nell’acquisizione delle abilità di lettura e scrittura come ad esempio: la conoscenza dell’alfabeto; la consapevolezza fonologica; la denominazione rapida automatica (RAN); la memoria fonologica e la processazione visiva. Numerose ricerche, anche internazionali, mostrano l’importanza dell’esercizio di tali abilità all’interno della scuola dell’infanzia anche ai fini della prevenzione dello sviluppo di difficoltà di apprendimento e/o di veri e propri disturbi nella successiva carriera accademica del bambino. Inoltre, la realizzazione di interventi didattici mirati allo sviluppo di tali prerequisiti cognitivi favorisce l’incremento e/o il recupero delle strumentalità della lettoscrittura. In tale scenario, diviene fondamentale riflettere sulle modalità di screening precoce che è possibile attivare all’interno della scuola dell’infanzia e sui relativi strumenti di assessment che è possibile utilizzare. Di conseguenza, sono passati in rassegna alcuni dei principali strumenti psicometrici editi in Italia, dal 1999 ad oggi, per la valutazione dei prerequisiti delle abilità di letto-scrittura in allievi a partire dai 5 anni di età.

In questo studio pilota abbiamo misurato il livello di Internet Addiction dei soggetti sperimentali italiani in due condizioni: uso generale di Internet, ed uso specifico del SN Facebook, utilizzando la versione italiana di IAT sopra citata, e confrontato i risultati divisi per fasce di età.

This study investigates the role of personality factors as predictors of Facebook usage. Data concerning Facebook usage and personality factors from 654 Facebook users were gathered using a web survey. Using path analysis, the results showed Openness was a predictor of Facebook early adoption, Conscientiousness with sparing use, Extraversion with long sessions and abundant friendships, and Neuroticism with high frequency of sessions. The possible role of Agreeableness in predicting low session frequency and friendships needs further validation.

Un gruppo di studenti del primo anno della scuola secondaria di primo grado è stato coinvolto in uno studio di ricerca-azione volto ad esplorare le abilità cognitive coinvolte e stimolate dall’uso di tecnologie quali LEGO® Mindstorm e Kodu Game Lab (KGL). I risultati dello studio dimostrano che l’utilizzo di queste due tecnologie richiede, negli alunni coinvolti nel laboratorio, l’applica- zione di processi cognitivi e competenze scolastiche differenti. Nello specifico, LEGO® Mindstorm sollecita maggiormente l’impiego di abilità di ragiona- mento logico-deduttivo, la capacità di elaborare velocemente target visivi, il problem solving geometrico, e la lettura e comprensione del testo-. Aim of the study was to investigate the cognitive processes involved and stimulated by educational robotics (LEGO® robots and Kodu Game Lab) in lower secondary school students. Results showed that LEGO® and KGL artifacts involve specific cognitive and academic skills. In particular the use of LEGO® is related to deductive reasoning, speed of processing visual targets, reading comprehension and geometrical problem solving; the use of KGL is related to visual-spatial working memory, updating skills and reading comprehension. Both technologies, moreover, are effective in the improvement of visual-spatial working memory. Implications for Human-Robot Interaction and BICA challenge are discussed.

This paper presents an experiential learning lab focused on building a digital storytelling using both robots with LEGO Mindstorms and virtual worlds with Kodu Game Lab. The experiential laboratory (32 hours) has involved 33 children of secondary schools in a collaborative learning setting in formal (school labs) and informal learning context (external cultural association). In a first phase of the activity children used Lego Mindstorm robotic kits, assembling them and creating a physical environment (pasterboard arenas) where robots were programmed for moving and taking actions. In a second phase children were invited to transfer the physical world built for robots in a new digital storytelling environment designed with Kodu Game Lab, a virtual world that allows to overcome the physical limits imposed by the previous environment. The study highlights as the combined application of robots building and virtual worlds programming helps students to work in groups and is effective to acquire the fundamentals of LEGO and KODU programming.

Le ricerche sulla formazione universitaria dei maestri sono state condotte per migliorare la qualità del servizio formativo offerto agli studenti del corso di laurea quadriennale in Scienze della Formazione Primaria dell'Università di Palermo. Alla luce dei risultati conseguiti sono avanzate alcune proposte per il nuovo corso di laurea quinquennale; esse riguardano i requisiti necessari per la sua attivazione, la modalità di accesso al corso di studi, l'attenzione particolare all'insegnamento nella scuola dell'infanzia, la frequenza delle attività formative da parte degli studenti.

Sono presentati gli obiettivi generali e specifici, i contenuti e le attività formative del nuovo corso di laurea magistrale quinquennale a ciclo unico in Scienze della Formazione Primaria attivato nell'a.a. 2011-12 dall'Università di Palermo per il conseguimento della doppia abilitazione all'insegnamento, nella scuola primaria e in quella dell'infanzia. il curriculo universitario è articolato in corsi di lezioni, laboratori, tirocinio e preparazione di due elaborati finali da discutere in seduta di laurea. Sono giustificate pedagogicamente le scelte metodologiche effettuate e i risultati formativi attesi.

Il contributo descrive una prima ipotesi di modellizzazione della struttura comunicativa e sociale di Facebook, effettuata assimilando tale network sociale a una rete con topologia small-world di tipo scale free. La topologia small-world presenta una struttura analoga alle strutture dei sistemi biologici e sociali, alle reti di associazioni tra idee e concetti e ad alcuni network artificiali (quali internet e le rotte aeree), e consente di spiegare l’evoluzione di questi sistemi in termini di aggiunta, rimozione e modifica di parti. Per testare la nostra ipotesi abbiamo analizzato i profili di 1001 utenti Facebook selezionati su base volontaria (F = 70%; M = 30%; età media = 25.5; DS = 7.0; range: 18-64). Recent studies by Fogg and his colleagues have defined a new psychological construct called Web credibility. It describes the principal dimensions which lead people to believe (or not) online information. In this framework, the factorial structure of Web credibility was explored in a sample of 152 Italian students of psychology who were Internet users, using a questionnaire. A consistent four-factorial structure emphasized crucial aspects of Web credibility, namely, Inaccuracy, Efficiency, Social Validation, and Commercial Features. Such results seem in line with Fogg's theoretical model; however, further research is required to identify dimensions of this construct.
