Abstract

Electromagnetic sensors can be exploited to determine properties (i.e., density) of hot mix asphalts (HMAs) by observing the surface polarization effects that occur in the radio frequency range of the electromagnetic spectrum. A challenge is the modeling of electromagnetic sensors, which do not require penetrating probes to perform the measurement. Moreover, core extraction is time consuming and subjected to technical and operator errors. In this paper, in order to model an electromagnetic sensor for HMA density measurement, a finite element code modeling a particular case of study has been exploited. A subsequent objective has been to determine HMA electrical characteristics and their relation with density values obtained with a nonnuclear device evaluating in-place HMA pavement. An experimental plan has been designed. The obtained results demonstrate that the implemented model is able to explain the relationship between density and electrical properties of HMA layers. Practical applications and recommendation have been outlined. Abstract

Nondestructive testing techniques are more and more exploited in order to quickly and cheaply recognize flaws into the inspected materials. Within this framework, a concern of eddy current tests is the depth of penetration [delta], above all in such applications as the control of steel beams. Thus, an optimal design of exciting coil is strictly required in order to reach as higher 6 as possible. The aim of this paper is first to design, by finite-element analysis, and test by in-lab measurements, a suitable exciting coil. Subsequently, the inverse ill-posed problem for defect characterization, starting from experimental measurements, has been studied and regularized, in order to characterize the depth and the extension of defects. Abstract

Eddy current techniques for nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT/NDE) of conducting materials is one of most application-oriented field of research within electromagnetics. In this paper, quantitative NDE of corrosion in metallic plates is considered. The inspection method exploits impedance measurements to determine the material loss profile caused by corrosion. Considering the corrosion shape as a function of impedance measurements, it has to be minimized in order to obtain the corrosion profile. In particular, swarm intelligence, characterized by evolutionary computation, has been exploited for the purpose. The proposed approach has been compared with results known in scientific literature both for performances and time consuming, with encouraging results. Abstract

Development of fast and accurate models of microwave devices and antennas is of paramount importance in computer-aided design and circuit analysis. At this purpose, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been extensively exploited in technical literature. However, in the last years support vector machines (SVMs) developed by Vapnik are gaining popularity due to many attractive features capable to overcome the limitations connected to ANNs. In this work, support vector regression machines (SVRMs) modelling performances are investigated and compared with ANNs performances by means of several cases of study. Index Terms--Computer-aided design (CAD) modelling, microstrip patch antennas, microstrip radial stubs, support vector regression machines (SVRMs).

49. Load proportional safety brake

Abstract

This brake is a self-energizing mechanical friction brake and is intended for use in a rotary drive system. It incorporates a torque sensor which cuts power to the power unit on any overload condition. The brake is capable of driving against an opposing load or driving, paying-out, an aiding load in either direction of rotation. The brake also acts as a no-back device when torque is applied to the output shaft. The advantages of using this type of device are: (1) low frictional drag when driving; (2) smooth paying-out of an aiding load with no runaway danger; (3) energy absorption proportional to load; (4) no-back activates within a few degrees of output shaft rotation and resets automatically; and (5) built-in overload protection.
