2. Shapes of a liquid droplet in a periodic box

Within the coexistence region between liquid and vapor the equilibrium pressure of a simulated fluid exhibits characteristic jumps and plateaus when plotted as a function of density at constant temperature. These features exclusively pertain to a finite-size sample in a periodic box, as they are washed out in the bulk limit. Below the critical density, at each pressure jump the shape of the liquid drop undergoes a morphological transition, changing from spherical to cylindrical to slab-like as the density is increased. We formulate a simple theory of these shape transitions, which is adapted from a calculation originally developed by Binder and coworkers [{\em J. Chem. Phys.} {\bf 120}, 5293 (2004)]. Our focus is on the pressure equation of state (rather than on the chemical potential, as in the original work) and includes an extension to elongated boxes. Predictions based on this theory well agree with extensive Monte Carlo data for the cut-and-shifted Lennard-Jones fluid. We further discuss on the thermodynamic stability of liquid drops with shapes other than the three mentioned above, like those found deep inside the liquid-vapor region in simulations starting from scratch. Specialized Monte Carlo methods are nowadays routinely employed, in combination with thermodynamic integration (TI), to locate phase boundaries of classical many-particle systems. This is especially useful for the fluid-solid transition, where a critical point does not exist and both phases may notoriously go deeply metastable. Using the Lennard-Jones model for demonstration, we hereby investigate on the alternate possibility of tracing reasonably accurate transition lines directly by integrating the pressure equation of state computed in a canonical-ensemble simulation with local moves. The recourse to this method would become a necessity when the stable crystal structure is not known. We show that, rather counterintuitively, metastability problems can be alleviated by reducing (rather than increasing) the size of the system. In particular, the location of liquid-vapor coexistence can exactly be predicted by just TI. On the contrary, TI badly fails in the solid-liquid region, where a better assessment (to within 10\% accuracy) of the coexistence pressure can be made by following the expansion, until melting, of the defective solid which has previously emerged from the decay of the metastable liquid., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures

Thermodynamic and structural properties of the tangent diatomic fluid are studied in the framework provided by the Reference Interaction Site Model (RISM) theory, coupled with a Modified Hypernetted Chain closure. The enforcement of the internal thermodynamic consistency of the theory is described in detail. The results we obtain almost quantitatively agree with available or newly generated simulation data. 5. Glass transition line in C60: a mode-coupling/molecular-dynamics study

We report a study of the mode-coupling theory (MCT) glass transition line for the Girifalco model of C60 fullerene. The equilibrium static structure factor of the model, the only required input for the MCT calculations, is provided by molecular dynamics simulations. The glass transition line develops inside the metastable liquid-solid coexistence region and extends down in temperature, terminating on the liquid sideof the metastable portion of the liquid-vapor binodal. The vitrification locus does not show re-entrant behavior. A comparison with previous computer simulation estimates of the location of the glass line suggests that the theory accurately reproduces the shape of the arrest line in the density-temperature plane. The theoretical HNC and MHNC structure factors (and consequently the corresponding MCT glass line) compare well with the numerical counterpart. 6. Virial coefficients and demixing of athermal nonadditive mixtures

We compute the fourth virial coefficient of a binary nonadditive hard-sphere mixture over a wide range of deviations from diameter additivity and size ratios. Hinging on this knowledge, we build up a $y$ expansion [B. Barboy and W. N. Gelbart, J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 71}, 3053 (1979)] in order to trace the fluid-fluid coexistence lines which we then compare with the available Gibbs-ensemble Monte Carlo data and with the estimates obtained through two refined integral-equation theories of the fluid state. We find that in a regime of moderately negative nonadditivity and largely asymmetric diameters, relevant to the modelling of sterically and electrostatically stabilized colloidal mixtures, the fluid-fluid critical point is unstable with respect to crystallization., Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures, to appear in J. We study the thermodynamic stability of fluid-fluid phase separation in binary nonadditive mixtures of hard-spheres for moderate size ratios. We are interested in elucidating the role played by small amounts of nonadditivity in determining the stability of fluid-fluid phase separation with respect to the fluid-solid phase transition. The demixing curves are built in the framework of the modified-hypernetted chain and of the Rogers-Young integral equation theories through the calculation of the Gibbs free energy. We also evaluate fluid-fluid phase equilibria within a first-order thermodynamic perturbation theory applied to an effective one-component potential obtained by integrating out the degrees of freedom of the small spheres. A qualitative agreement emerges between the two different approaches. We also address the determination of the freezing line by applying the first-order thermodynamic perturbation theory to the effective interaction between large spheres. Our results suggest that for intermediate size ratios a modest amount of nonadditivity, smaller than earlier thought, can be sufficient to drive the fluid-fluid critical point into the thermodinamically stable region of the phase diagram. These findings could be significant for rare-gas mixtures in extreme pressure and temperature conditions, where nonadditivity is expected to be rather small., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, to appear in J. 8. Theory and simulation of short-range models of globular protein solutions

We report theoretical and simulation studies of phase coexistence in model globular protein solutions, based on short-range, central, pair potential representations of the interaction among macro-particles. After reviewing our previous investigations of hard-core Yukawa and generalised Lennard-Jones potentials, we report more recent results obtained within a DLVO-like description of lysozyme solutions in water and added salt. We show that a one-parameter fit of this model based on Static Light Scattering and Self-Interaction Chromatography data in the dilute protein regime, yields demixing and crystallization curves in good agreement with experimental protein-rich/protein-poor and solubility envelopes. The dependence of cloud and solubility points temperature of the model on the ionic strength is also investigated. 9. Theoretical description of phase coexistence in model C60

We have investigated the phase diagram of the Girifalco model of C60 fullerene in the framework provided by the MHNC and the SCOZA liquid state theories, and by a Perturbation Theory (PT), for the free energy of the solid phase. We present an extended assessment of such theories as set against a recent Monte Carlo study of the same model [D. Costa et al, J. Chem. Phys. 118:304 (2003)]. We have compared the theoretical predictions with the corresponding simulation results for several thermodynamic properties. Then we have determined the phase diagram of the model, by using either the SCOZA, or the MHNC, or the PT predictions for one of the coexisting phases, and the simulation data for the other phase, in order to separately ascertain the accuracy of each theory. It turns out that the overall appearance of the phase portrait is reproduced fairly well by all theories, with remarkable accuracy as for the melting line and the solid-vapor equilibrium. The MHNC and SCOZA results for the liquid-vapor coexistence, as well as for the corresponding critical points, are quite accurate. All results are discussed in terms of the basic assumptions underlying each theory. We have selected the MHNC for the fluid and the first-order PT for the solid phase, as the most accurate tools to investigate the phase behavior of the model in terms of purely theoretical approaches. The overall results appear as a robust benchmark for further theoretical investigations on higher order C(n>60) fullerenes, as well as on other fullerene-related materials, whose description can be based on a modelization similar to that adopted in this work., Comment: RevTeX4, 15 pages, 7 figures; submitted to Phys. 10. Free energy determination of phase coexistence in model C60: A comprehensive Monte Carlo study

The free energy of the solid and fluid phases of the Girifalco C60 model are determined through extensive Monte Carlo simulations. In this model the molecules interact through a spherical pair potential, characterized by a narrow and attractive well, adjacent to a harshly repulsive core. We have used the Widom test particle method and a mapping from an Einstein crystal, in order to estimate the absolute free energy in the fluid and solid phases, respectively; we have then determined the free energy along several isotherms, and the whole phase diagram, by means of standard thermodynamic integrations. We highlight how the interplay between the liquid-vapor and the liquid-solid coexistence conditions determines the existence of a narrow liquid pocket in the phase diagram, whose stability is assessed and confirmed in agreement with previous studies. In particular, the critical temperature follows closely an extended corresponding-states rule recently outlined by Noro and Frenkel [J. Chem. Phys. 113:2941 (2000)]. We discuss the emerging "energetic" properties of the system, which drive the phase behavior in systems interacting through short-range forces [A. A. Louis, Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A 359:939 (2001)], in order to explain the discrepancy between the predictions of several structural indicators and the results of full free energy calculations, to locate the fluid phase boundaries. More generally, we aim to provide extended reference data for calculations of the free energy of the C60 fullerite in the low temperature regime, as for the determination of the phase diagram of higher order fullerenes and other fullerene-related materials, whose description is based on the same model adopted in this work., Comment: RevTeX, 11 pages, 9 figures

- Abstract
Background: Albuminuria has been classically considered a marker of kidney damage progression in diabetic patients and it is routinely assessed to monitor kidney function. However, the role of a mild GFR reduction on the development of stage ≥3 CKD has been less explored in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic role of kidney disease measures, namely albuminuria and reduced GFR, on the development of stage ≥3 CKD in a large cohort of patients affected by T1DM. Methods: A total of 4284 patients affected by T1DM followed-up at 76 diabetes centers participating to the Italian Association of Clinical Diabetologists (Associazione Medici Diabetologi, AMD) initiative constitutes the study population. Urinary albumin excretion (ACR) and estimated GFR (eGFR) were retrieved and analyzed. The incidence of stage ≥3 CKD (eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) or eGFR reduction > 30% from baseline was evaluated. Results: The mean estimated GFR was 98 ± 17 mL/min/1.73m2 and the proportion of patients with albuminuria was 15.3% (n = 654) at baseline. About 8% (n = 337) of patients developed one of the two renal endpoints during the 4-year follow-up period. Age, albuminuria (micro or macro) and baseline eGFR < 90 ml/min/m2 were independent risk factors for stage ≥3 CKD and renal function worsening. When compared to patients with eGFR > 90 ml/min/1.73m2 and normoalbuminuria, those with albuminuria at baseline had a 1.69 greater risk of reaching stage 3 CKD, while patients with mild eGFR reduction (i.e. eGFR between 90 and 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) show a 3.81 greater risk that rose to 8.24 for those patients with albuminuria and mild eGFR reduction at baseline. Conclusions: Albuminuria and eGFR reduction represent independent risk factors for incident stage ≥3 CKD in T1DM patients. The simultaneous occurrence of reduced eGFR and albuminuria have a synergistic effect on renal function worsening.

However, the role of a mild GFR reduction on the development of stage ≥3 CKD has been less explored in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic role of kidney disease measures, namely albuminuria and reduced GFR, on the development of stage ≥3 CKD in a large cohort of patients affected by T1DM. Methods: A total of 4284 patients affected by T1DM followed-up at 76 diabetes centers participating to the Italian Association of Clinical Diabetologists (Associazione Medici Diabetologi, AMD) initiative constitutes the study population. Urinary albumin excretion (ACR) and estimated GFR (eGFR) were retrieved and analyzed. The incidence of stage ≥3 CKD (eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) or eGFR reduction > 30% from baseline was evaluated. Results: The mean estimated GFR was 98 ± 17 mL/min/1.73m2 and the proportion of patients with albuminuria was 15.3% (n = 654) at baseline. About 8% (n = 337) of patients developed one of the two renal endpoints during the 4-year follow-up period. Age, albuminuria (micro or macro) and baseline eGFR < 90 ml/min/m2 were independent risk factors for stage ≥3 CKD and renal function worsening. When compared to patients with eGFR > 90 ml/min/1.73m2 and normoalbuminuria, those with albuminuria at baseline had a 1.69 greater risk of reaching stage 3 CKD, while patients with mild eGFR reduction (i.e. eGFR between 90 and 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) show a 3.81 greater risk that rose to 8.24 for those patients with albuminuria and mild eGFR reduction at baseline. Conclusions: Albuminuria and eGFR reduction represent independent risk factors for incident stage ≥3 CKD in T1DM patients. The simultaneous occurrence of reduced eGFR and albuminuria have a synergistic effect on renal function worsening.

In this study, Boltzmann inversion is applied in conjunction with molecular dynamics simulations to derive inter-molecular potential for protein lysozyme in aqueous solution directly from experimental static structure factor. The potential has a soft repulsion at short distances and an attraction well at intermediate distances that give rise to the liquid-liquid phase separation. Moreover, Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that a non-spherical description of lysozyme is better suited to correctly reproduce the experimentally observed properties of such a phase separation. Our findings shed new light on the common problem in molecular and cell biology: "How to model proteins in their natural aqueous environments?". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic role of kidney disease measures, namely albuminuria and reduced GFR, on the development of stage ≥3 CKD in a large cohort of patients affected by T1DM. Methods A total of 4284 patients affected by T1DM followed-up at 76 diabetes centers participating to the Italian Association of Clinical Diabetologists (Associazione Medici Diabetologi, AMD) initiative constitutes the study population. Urinary albumin excretion (ACR) and estimated GFR (eGFR) were retrieved and analyzed. The incidence of stage ≥3 CKD (eGFR 30% from baseline was evaluated. Results The mean estimated GFR was 98 ± 17 mL/min/1.73m2 and the proportion of patients with albuminuria was 15.3% (n = 654) at baseline. About 8% (n = 337) of patients developed one of the two renal endpoints during the 4-year follow-up period. Age, albuminuria (micro or macro) and baseline eGFR 90 ml/min/1.73m2 and normoalbuminuria, those with albuminuria at baseline had a 1.69 greater risk of reaching stage 3 CKD, while patients with mild eGFR reduction (i.e. eGFR between 90 and 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) show a 3.81 greater risk that rose to 8.24 for those patients with albuminuria and mild eGFR reduction at baseline. Conclusions Albuminuria and eGFR reduction represent independent risk factors for incident stage ≥3 CKD in T1DM patients. The simultaneous occurrence of reduced eGFR and albuminuria have a synergistic effect on renal function worsening. We report an atomistic molecular dynamics determination of the phase diagram of a rigid-cage model of C36. We first show that free energies obtained via thermodynamic integrations along isotherms displaying "van der Waals loops," are fully reproduced by those obtained via isothermal-isochoric integration encompassing only stable states. We find that a similar result also holds for isochoric paths crossing van der Waals regions of the isotherms, and for integrations extending to rather high densities where liquid-solid coexistence can be expected to occur. On such a basis we are able to map the whole phase diagram of C36, with resulting triple point and critical temperatures about 1770 K and 2370 K, respectively.We thus predict a 600 K window of existence of a stable liquid phase. Also, at the triple point density, we find that the structural functions and the diffusion coefficient maintain a liquid-like character down to 1400--1300 K, this indicating a wide region of possible supercooling. We discuss why all these features might render possible the observation of the melting of C36 fullerite and of its liquid state, at variance with what previously experienced for C60. We report the determination of an effective protein-protein central potential for a lysozyme solution, obtained from the direct inversion of the total structure factor of the system, as extracted from small angle neutron scattering. The inversion scheme rests on a hypernetted-chain relationship between the effective potential and the structural functions, and is preliminarily tested for the case of a Lennard-Jones interaction. We report protein-protein structure factors of aqueous lysozyme solutions at different pH and ionic strengths, as determined by small-angle neutron scattering experiments. The observed upturn of the structure factor at small wavevectors, as the pH increases, marks a crossover between two different regimes, one dominated by repulsive forces, and another one where attractive interactions become prominent, with the ensuing development of enhanced density fluctuations. In order to rationalize such experimental outcome from a microscopic viewpoint, we have carried out extensive simulations of different coarse-grained models. We have first studied a model in which macromolecules are described as soft spheres interacting through an attractive r-6 potential, plus embedded pH-dependent discrete charges; we show that the uprise undergone by the structure factor is qualitatively predicted. We have then studied a Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) model, in which only central interactions are advocated; we demonstrate that this model leads to a protein-rich/protein-poor coexistence curve that agrees quite well with the experimental counterpart; experimental correlations are instead reproduced only at low pH and ionic strengths. We have finally investigated a third, 'mixed' model in which the central attractive term of the DLVO potential is imported within the distributed-charge approach; it turns out that the different balance of interactions, with a much shorter-range attractive contribution, leads in this latter case to an improved agreement with the experimental crossover. We discuss the relationship between experimental correlations, phase coexistence, and features of effective interactions, as well as possible paths toward a quantitative prediction of structural properties of real lysozyme solutions. The RISM theory reproduces the splitting of the static structure factor at low temperatures, a feature intimately related to the onset of the tetrahedral ordering. We report molecular dynamics and reference interaction site model (RISM) theory of methanol and carbon tetrachloride mixtures. Our study encompasses the whole concentration range, by including the pure component limits. We majorly focus on an analysis of partial, total, and concentration-concentration structure factors, and examine in detail the k→0 limits of these functions. Simulation results confirm the tendency of methanol to self-associate with the formation of ring structures in the high dilution regime of this species, in agreement with experimental studies and with previous simulations by other authors. This behavior emerges as strongly related to the high nonideality of the mixture, a quantitative estimate of which is provided in terms of concentration fluctuation correlations, through the structure factors examined. The interaggregate correlation distance is also thereby estimated. Finally, the compressibility of the mixture is found in good agreement with experimental data. The RISM predictions are throughout assessed against simulation; the theory describes better the apolar solvent than the alcohol properties. We revisit the thermodynamic and structural properties of fluids of homonuclear hard dumbbells in the framework provided by the reference interaction site model (RISM) theory of molecular fluids. Besides the previously investigated Percus–Yevick (PY) approximation, we test the accuracy of other closures to the RISM equations, imported from the theory of simple fluids; specifically, we study the hypernetted chain (HNC), the modified HNC (MHNC) and, less extensively, the Verlet approximations. We implement our approach for models characterized by several different elongations, up to the case of tangent diatomics, and investigate the whole fluid density range. The theoretical predictions are assessed against Monte Carlo simulations, either available from literature or newly generated by us. The HNC and PY equations of state, calculated via different routes, share on the whole the same level of accuracy. The MHNC is applied by enforcing an internal thermodynamic consistency constraint, leading to good predictions for the equation of state as the elongation of the dumbbell increases. As for the radial distribution function, the MHNC appears superior to other theories, especially for tangent diatomics in the high density limit; the PY approximation is better than the HNC and Verlet closures in the high density or elongation regime. Our structural analysis is supplemented by an accurate inversion procedure to reconstruct from Monte Carlo data and RISM the “exact” direct correlation function. In agreement with such calculations and consistent with the forecast of rigorous diagrammatic analysis, all theories predict the occurrence in the direct correlation function of a first cusp inside the dumbbell core and (with the obvious exception of the PY) of a second cusp outside; the cusps’ heights are also qualitatively well reproduced by the theories, except at high densities. We report atomistic molecular dynamics investigations of a model C36 fullerite in which the fullerene molecules are modeled as rigid cages over which the carbon atoms occupy fixed interaction sites, distributed in space according to the experimentally known atomic positions in the molecule. Carbon sites belonging to different molecules are assumed to interact via a 12-6 Lennard–Jones–type potential; the parameters of the latter are employed in the framework of a molecular dynamics fitting procedure, through which the ambient condition physical quantities characterizing the hcp structure of solid C36 are eventually reproduced. We discuss applications of the adopted modelization to the C36 phases in a temperature range spanning from 300 to 1500 K, and compare the obtained results to the available data for C36 and other fullerenes, and to the predictions of the well known Girifalco central potential modelization of interactions in fullerenes, as applied to the C36 case. The free energy of the solid and fluid phases of the Girifalco C[sub 60] model are determined through extensive Monte Carlo simulations. In this model the molecules interact through a spherical pair potential, characterized by a narrow and attractive well, adjacent to a harshly repulsive core. We have used the Widom test particle method and a mapping from an Einstein crystal in order to estimate the absolute free energy in the fluid and solid phases, respectively; we have then determined the free energy along several isotherms, and the whole phase diagram, by means of standard thermodynamic integrations. The dependence of the simulation's results on the size of the sample is also monitored in a number of cases. We highlight how the interplay between the liquid-vapor and the liquid-solid coexistence conditions determines the existence of a narrow liquid pocket in the phase diagram, whose stability is assessed and confirmed in agreement with previous studies. In particular, the critical temperature follows closely an extended corresponding-state rule recently outlined by Noro and Frenkel [J. Chem. Phys. 113, 2941 (2000)]. We discuss the emerging "energetic" properties of the system, which drive the phase behavior in systems interacting through short-range forces [A. A. Louis, Philos. Trans. R. Soc. London, Ser. A 359, 939 (2001)], in order to explain the discrepancy between the predictions of several structural indicators and the results of full free energy calculations, to locate the fluid phase boundaries. More generally, we aim to provide extended reference data for calculations of the free energy of the C60 fullerite in the low temperature regime, as for the determination of the phase diagram of higher order C[sub n]>60 fullerenes and other fullerene-related materials, whose description is based on the same model adopted in this work. By molecular dynamics (MD) simulations we study the crystallization process in a model system whose particles interact by a spherical pair potential with a narrow and deep attractive well adjacent to a hard repulsive core. The phase diagram of the model displays a solid-fluid equilibrium, with a metastable fluid-fluid separation. Our computations are restricted to fairly small systems (from 2592 to 10368 particles) and cover long simulation times, with constant energy trajectories extending up to 76 x 10[sup 6] MD steps. By progressively reducing the system temperature below the solid-fluid line, we first observe the metastable fluid-fluid separation, occurring readily and almost reversibly upon crossing the corresponding line in the phase diagram. The nucleation of the crystal phase takes place when the system is in the two-fluid metastable region. Analysis of the temperature dependence of the nucleation time allows us to estimate directly the nucleation free energy barrier. The results are compared with the predictions of classical nucleation theory. The critical nucleus is identified, and its structure is found to be predominantly fcc. Following nucleation, the solid phase grows steadily across the system, incorporating a large number of localized and extended defects. We discuss the relaxation processes taking place both during and after the crystallization stage. The relevance of our simulation for the kinetics of protein crystallization under normal experimental conditions is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report calculations of the phase diagram and spinodal decomposition line of a charged hard-sphere fluid mixture constituted of two different cations, one anion and one neutral particle species. In the high-density regime the model is suitable to mimic molten silicate and metal halides mixtures, as those forming a magmatic fluid; in the low-density regime it can conveniently describe the properties of charged colloidal suspensions or micellar solutions. In this work the attention is focused mainly on the high-density regime of the mixture, and phase stability conditions are determined through the knowledge of the Gibbs free energy of mixing, Gmix at constant pressure, as calculated in the mean spherical approximation. It turns out that the solubility of the neutral component in the ionic mixture depends substantially on the potential-to-kinetic-energy ratio, that is, on the so-called coupling strength or plasma parameter, and increases when this decreases. This result is rationalized by considering the different terms contributing to Gmix and, specifically, the confi-gurational Coulombic internal energy term and entropic term. The fine balance between these two quantities is detailed and the onset of phase segregation discussed on these same bases. Such a representation also allows us to interpret why mixtures like those envisaged here are characterized by a phase diagram with an upper consolution point and why the critical temperature turns out to be an increasing function of the pressure. The implications of this last result seem interesting since, e.g., molten salt-silicate mixtures and, therefore, presumably fused rocks or magmas, could segregate not only under cooling, but also at constant temperature as the result of pressure variations. Structural properties and medium-range order (MRO) in calcium metasilicate (CaSiO3) glass are investigated at different concentrations of calcium oxide through the molecular dynamics technique. Calculations are based on the Born–Mayer–Huggins potential, and show that the experimental Ca–Ca partial structure factor, which documents the existence in the glass of Ca MRO, can qualitatively be reproduced within such a model. The characteristics of Ca MRO are then examined in the context of the overall structure of the system. At equimolar concentrations of CaO and SiO2, the simulation evidentiates the formation in the glass of clusters of CaO6 octahedra in which Ca ions are roughly lying on a plane, in a configuration that closely resembles the one of crystalline CaSiO3. On the other hand, the ‘network’ structure and MRO of pure SiO2 glass appear sensibly affected by the presence of Ca ions, with considerable loose of connectivity between SiO4 tetrahedral units, and reduction of the first sharp diffraction peak in the neutron structure factor. The q-space investigation of charge–charge correlations signals the presence of medium-range charge ordering in the calcium vs oxygen ion distribution, at a wave vector equal to that associated to Ca MRO. The phase diagrams and the spinodal lines of different types of charged hard sphere fluid mixtures (CHSM) are determined through the use of the mean spherical approximation (MSA). The attention in the paper is particularly addressed to the low density regime of these systems, where the physical parameters are chosen in such a way so to mimic polyelectrolyte solutions with an added salt, or dilute electrolyte solution mixtures of simple salts. The phase diagrams at densities corresponding to the molten salt regime, obtained in a previous paper, are also reported, in order to get a complete picture of the phase stability behavior of CHSM. In all cases investigated the MSA predicts the existence of a closed solubility loop in the low density domain of the phase diagram. The location and the extension of this feature turns out to be crucially affected by the pressure, by the diameter ratios of the ionic components, and by the asymmetry of the ionic charges. A comparison of the MSA predictions in the low density regime with more refined theoretical approaches, or with computer simulation data, has not been possible for reasons which are explained in the text. However, the theory is expected to work at the same level of accuracy as in other physical contexts, where its predictions for the phase stability conditions of various systems have been found to be qualitatively reliable; moreover, for the case in which the model mimics a polyelectrolyte solution with an added salt, the form of the theoretical spinodal closely resembles the cloud points curve of an ionic micellar solution experimentally investigated by other authors. The mean spherical approximation (MSA), the hypernetted-chain (HNC) approximation, and Monte Carlo (MC) calculations are used in order to investigate the phase stability of dense charged hard sphere fluid mixtures. According to the MSA, spinodal decomposition occurs in these systems in a certain range of the physical parameters. The HNC results indicate the existence of a spinodal line in qualitative agreement with the MSA prediction. Local compositions obtained by MC calculations show the expected behavior in a mixture approaching segregation. The concentrations of the coexisting phases are also calculated within the MSA, and the characteristics of the phase diagrams of different types of mixture are discussed. A detailed analysis is then made of the thermodynamic quantities which define the Gibbs free energy of mixing; this allows one to understand in more detail the segregation process. An extensive series of calculations are made to compare an improved closure of the Born–Green–Yvon (BGY) equation for the electric double layer of primitive electrolytes to existing Monte Carlo simulation and other theories, such as the modified Poisson–Boltzmann (version 5) (MPB5) and the hypernetted chain/mean spherical approximation (HNC/MSA), and its recent improvements. In contrast to these theories the BGY equation satisfies the contact theorem always. Furthermore, the bulk pair correlation functions used are the most accurate available, namely, the HNC bulk results. The results show very good general agreement to the computer work for high densities and surface charges. In particular, we are able to go to higher densities than those hitherto published in the literature. For low density 2–2 and 2–1 electrolytes, the agreement is not as good as for the other theories. Excess thermodynamic properties due to Coulombic interactions are obtained using the analytical solutions for the mean spherical approximation closure. A detailed description of the dependence of the resulting phase diagrams on charge asymmetry of the ions, size of the neutral species, and the osmotic pressure of the mixture is presented. Binary mixtures of salt and hard spheres exhibit type III phase behavior. An increase in charge asymmetry results in an increase in the critical temperature of the mixture because enthalpic forces (ion-pairing) dominate. An increase in the size of the neutral species also results in an increase in the critical temperature of the mixture because of packing effects, which encourage phase separation. This paper discusses the synthesis of an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to perform both wind velocities and state estimation for a non conventional UAV flying in ground effect. Since, in IGE flight, motions into the symmetry plane are of primary concern, the study focuses on the longitudinal aircraft dynamics. The proposed estimator requires measurement of few flight variables, easily obtainable by means of conventional sensors; besides, it does not use Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). To simulate a low cost sensing equipment, the model outputs are corrupted by white noise of relatively high standard deviation. Furthermore, to cope with the low rate of the GPS with respect to the other sensors, the EKF algorithm is modified to allow for a dual rate measurement model. State propagation is obtained by means of an accurate, highly non-linear mathematical model of the UAV dynamics which allows to cope with both the non conventional configuration and ground effect. Combined estimation of the UAV state and wind velocity is obtained by augmenting the system state vector with the wind velocity components. Numerical simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed method in widely different maneuvering conditions mixing IGE and OGE flight stages and in presence of largely dissimilar wind disturbance characteristics. The performance advantages with respect to a classical, computationally simpler estimation scheme are also highlighted. Closed loop simulations have shown the suitability of the obtained state estimates for control purposes.

In this paper we present our research about a particular ultralight WIG. We have carried out the design of a Flight Control System that has to fix the control variables trend through a non-linear mathematical model, because of the particular geometric and aerodynamic configuration of this WIG. So, the non-linear mathematical model design has to reproduce exactly the aircraft behaviour either OGE or IGE. In particular, through classical semi-empirical relations, analytical equations have been obtained in order to evaluate incidence variations, downwash and upwash angles due to the ground. In the present paper only longitudinal dynamic is considered, because of its peculiarity in WIG's aircraft dynamic. A mathematical general model has been built to evaluate aerodynamic coefficients variation laws due to altitude. This general equations system can be used in order to evaluate stability and control derivatives so it affords to simulate all the flight phases either out or in ground effect. A Simulink model has been realized and LQG/LTR robust control technique has been applied to design the controller. The simulation results have shown the accuracy of the mathematical model and that it is possible to control the studied UAV either OGE or IGE utilizing a single control system.
