Cryogenics is the science and technology of very low temperatures, typically below 120 K. The most common applications are liquified natural gas carriers, ground-based tanks, and propellant tanks for space launchers. A crucial aspect of cryogenic technology is effective insulation to minimise boil-off from storage tanks and prevent frost build-up. Rigid closed-cell foams are prominent in various applications, including cryogenic insulation, due to their balance between thermal and mechanical properties. Polyurethane (PU) foam is widely used for internal insulation in cryogenic tanks, providing durability under thermal shocks and operational loads. External insulation, used in liquified natural gas carriers and ground-based tanks, generally demands less compressive strength and can utilise lower-density foams. The evolution of cryogenic insulation materials has seen the incorporation of environmentally friendly blowing agents and bio-based polyols to enhance sustainability. Fourth-generation physical blowing agents, such as HFO-1233zd(E) and HFO-1336mzz(Z), offer low global warming potential and improved thermal conductivity. Additionally, bio-based polyols from renewable resources like different natural oils and recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) are being integrated into rigid PU foams, showing promising properties for cryogenic applications. Polyurethane foams obtained with low global warming potential and low ozone depletion potential blowing agent.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) obtained by acidic hydrolysis from microcrystalline cellulose were dispersed in a biopolyurethane matrix to prepare composite films. The polyurethane was prepared from a hydroxylated soybean oil (SO-OH) and a polymeric diphenyldiisocyanate (pMDI), using a organotin compound as the catalyst. The composite films contained different concentrations of nanocelullose, without any macroscopic aggregates in all cases. Thermal, tensile and dynamic mechanical properties of the films were determined for all the samples. In particular, it was observed that the glass transition temperature of the nanocomposites slightly increased with the concentration of the cellulose nanocrystals. One of the biggest disadvantages of rigid polyurethane (PU) foams is its low thermal resistance, high flammability and high smoke production. Greatest advantage of this thermal insulation material is its low thermal conductivity (λ), which at 18-28 mW/(m•K) is superior to other materials. To lower the flammability of PU foams, different flame retardants (FR) are used. Usually, industrially viable are halogenated liquid FRs but recent trends in EU regulations show that they are not desirable any more. Main concern is toxicity of smoke and health hazard form volatiles in PU foam materials. Development of intumescent passive fire protection for foam materials would answer problems with flammability without using halogenated FRs. It is possible to add expandable graphite (EG) into PU foam structure but this increases the thermal conductivity greatly. Thus, the main advantage of PU foam is lost. To decrease the flammability of PU foams, three different contents 3%; 9% and 15% of EG were added to PU foam formulation. Sample with 15% of EG increased λ of PU foam from 24.0 to 30.0 mW/(m•K). This paper describes the study where PU foam developed from renewable resources is protected with thermally expandable intumescent mat from Technical Fibre Products Ltd. (TFP) as an alternative to EG added into PU material. TFP produces range of mineral fibre mats with EG that produce passive fire barrier. Two type mats were used to develop sandwich-type PU foams. Also, synergy effect of non-halogenated FR, dimethyl propyl phosphate and EG was studied. Flammability of developed materials was assessed using Cone Calorimeter equipment. Density, thermal conductivity, compression strength and modulus of elasticity were tested for developed PU foams. PU foam morphology was assessed from scanning electron microscopy images.

Medium-density rigid polyurethane (PU) foams are often produced in sealed molds; therefore, the processes inside the mold and structure of the produced foam blocks need to be understood. The structural and mechanical anisotropy is shown to be the third variable along with (1) concentration of the nanoclay filler and (2) density, to determine the mechanical properties of the filled PU foam composites produced in a sealed mold. The varying anisotropy of the specimens hinders the accurate evaluation of the filling effect. The methodology for the estimation of the anisotropy characteristics of specimens from different locations within the nanoclay filled PU foam blocks is elaborated. A criterion, based on analysis of Poisson's ratios, is formulated for the selection of specimens with similar anisotropy characteristics. The shear and bulk moduli are estimated theoretically, dependent on the filler's concentration, using the experimentally determined constants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
