Abstract

This article aims to show how Dante Alighieri was ‘used’ in Renaissance Polish literature. Dante was known by Polish intellectuals first of all as a political theorist. Only in the second half of the 14th century did Polish writers start to refer to him as a great poet (Długosz). However, Dante was rather known than read and ‘used’ as a topic character to demonstrate the excellence of vernacular poetry. Andrzej Trzecieski the Younger, in fact, wrote in a couple of epigrams to his friend Mikołaj Rej, that Rej is to Polish literature, what Dante (and Petrarch) was to Italian literature; in addition to this, Trzecieski underlines, through intertextual allusions, that Dante (and Rej) had the same dignity of ancient Greek and Latin poets. This attitude that vernacular literature is on par with Greek and ancient literature is found also in the elegy III 8 by Jan Kochanowski, where Ronsard is presented as a “classic” poet. The final part of this work compares the situation in 15th and 16th-century Italian and Polish literature in terms of the relationship between ancient and vernacular poetry.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyse the Elegy I 1 from the Elegiarum libri quattuor Jana Kochanowskiego, both in the 1584 printed edition and in the manuscript version of Elegiarum libri duo, from the manuscrIpt Osmólski (1562-1564). The study also considers the epigrams Ad lectorem (introducing the elegies as well as the whole book) and the epigram Ad Myscovium, the proemial text of the collection of epigrams Foricoenia, printed in the same book, from the plainness of constant allusions – in the opening poems of Kochanowski – to particular texts, author, motifs (e.g., the author constantly refers to both satirical images and authors like Persius and Horace). In addition to the study of loci paralleli, especially focused on the presence of neolatin poetry in the elegy by Kochanowski, the article studies the way in which Kochanowski re-elaborated the elegy, preparing it for publication. From the manuscript to the edition of 1584 the poem did not undergo considerable modifications, as is the case of other elegies (el. II 3 = I 3 Osmólski). Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) develops through the accumulation of both genetic and epigenetic alterations. However, while the former are already used as prognostic and predictive biomarkers, the latter are less well characterized. Here, performing global methylation analysis on both CRCs and adenomas by Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation450 Bead Chips, we identified a panel of 74 altered CpG islands, demonstrating that the earliest methylation alterations affect genes coding for proteins involved in the crosstalk between cell and surrounding environment. The panel discriminates CRCs and adenomas from peritumoral and normal mucosa with very high specificity (100%) and sensitivity (99.9%). Interestingly, over 70% of the hypermethylated islands resulted in downregulation of gene expression. To establish the possible usefulness of these non-invasive markers for detection of colon cancer, we selected three biomarkers and identified the presence of altered methylation in stool DNA and plasma cell-free circulating DNA from CRC patients.

38. Development and Validation of a One-Zone Model for Fire-Induced Pressure Prediction in Airtight Houses.

Abstract

The need for sustainability and smaller ecological footprint lead to the construction of more airtight building envelopes with better thermal insulation in order to increase the energy efficiency according to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD 2010/31/EU). However, specific fire risks can be encountered by the occupants since they can be blocked for a long period due to the fire-induced pressure and the inward door opening. In 2015 a full-scale fire setting was built in Bauffe (Belgium) by the Régie Provinciale Autonome du Hainaut RPA on its fire brigade training site for studying the effects related to fire development in a building with high air tightness. These experimental results were used for validating the zone model CFAST 7.3.2 predictive capability for fire induced pressure. Thanks to the very low calculation time, using a fire zone model as first step is a practical way to understand the influence of the major physical phenomena before using much more complex software such as computational fluid dynamics. However, serious limitations were observed with CFAST version 7.2.3. For the tests carried out without mechanical ventilation, CFAST does not consider the effect of pressure on the natural leakages area which increases with pressure. This limitation leads to an overprediction of the fire induced pressure by a factor of 4. For the tests carried out with mechanical ventilation, CFAST version 7.2.3 does not consider the reverse flow of fan supplying fresh air into the building when the fire induced pressure is higher than the stall pressure of the fan neither the extra flow of fumes of the fan extracting air from the setup leading also to an overprediction of the fire induced pressure by a factor of 4. This paper presents the development of a one-zone fire model for the calculation of the fire induced pressure in a multiple rooms airtight building taking into account the effects of the fire induced pressure on both the effective leakage area (according to the ASTM E779) and the characteristic curve of the fans. This new code has been validated thanks to the novel experimental results obtained at large scale. Satisfactory results were obtained for parameters such as fumes temperatures, pressures, major species concentrations and flow rates in the mechanical ventilation. This work presents the critical edition with commentary of Jan Kochanowski's "Elegiarum Libri Quattuor". The commentary is focused on the classical heritage which emerge from the reading of the texts. Although the presence of Propertius is undeniable (as the critics already pointed out), it's evident the substantial presence of Tibullus, Ovid and of greek poets as Pindar and Homer.
