L'Enfant had been commissioned by President Washington to plan a Federal City on the banks of the Potomac. Although L'Enfant had been ready to lay down his life for the theory of democracy, his temperament was autocratic.

The article profiles the author's great great grandmother, Augusta Adams Cobb Young. Augusta Adams is well known for leaving her husband Henry Cobb of Boston, Massachusetts and taking two of her seven children with her to marry a Mormon man named Brigham Young in Salt Lake City, Utah, becoming one of his twenty seven wives. She died on February 3, 1886 at the age of 84.

The article focuses on the permit of local ships to charter for mass expeditions under the Redemption system, a most sordid business. The emigrants who could not pay for passage will be carried without prepayment but on the arrival at American port, they will be auctioned off as bond servants. Further, before they boarded in the ship, the travelers were given a paper to sign in case of death at sea in which the surviving redemptioners were work out the time of those who had died redemptioners.

The article presents the author's reminiscence of an elderly lady. The author thinks about Cousin Toot, an elderly lady who lived about four blocks from her house. She remembers Toot, as pale with fat face and her gray hair coming unpinned from its bun. At her house the author always had a feeling of safety, solidity and assurance, probably because nothing ever changed with her from almost thirty years. The author was always happy to be with her and disclosed all the secrets to her. The author liked to hear about her accounts of childhood, her pony and even her aunts and uncles.
