1. Optimal Positioning of PMUs for Fault Detection and Localization in Active Distribution Networks

Abstract

This paper considers the problem of fault detection and localization in active distribution networks using PMUs. The proposed algorithm consists in computing a set of weighted least squares state estimates whose results are used to detect, characterize and localize the occurrence of a fault. Moreover, a criteria to minimize the number of PMUs required to correctly perform the proposed algorithm is defined. Such a criteria, based on system observability conditions, allows the design of an optimization problem to set the positions of PMUs along the grid, in order to get the desired fault localization resolution. The performances of the strategy are tested via simulations on a benchmark distribution system.

Abstract

The goal of this paper is the experimental validation of a gray-box equivalent modeling approach applied to microgrids. The main objective of the equivalent modeling is to represent the dynamic response of a microgrid with a simplified model. The main contribution of this work is the experimental validation of a two-step process, composed by the definition of a nonlinear equivalent model with operational constraints, adapted to the microgrid environment, and the identification procedure used to define the model parameters. Once the parameters are identified, the simplified model is ready to reproduce the microgrid behavior to voltage and frequency variations, in terms of active and reactive power exchanges at the point of common coupling. To validate the proposed approach, a set of experimental tests have been carried out on a real LV microgrid considering different configurations, including both grid-connected and islanded operating conditions. Results show the effectiveness of the proposed technique and the applicability of the model to perform dynamic simulations., Comment: To be published in IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications

Abstract

Animal models represent the gold standard for toxicity assessment. However, due to anatomical and functional diversity, they are often unable to replicate the real human physio-pathological scenario with sufficient fidelity. Additionally, their use is currently strongly debated due to ethical issues. In this scenario, the development of in vitro bioengineered tissue/organ models could represent a significant step forward in establishing Novel Approach Methodologies, providing more reliable and robust methods for toxicity assessment [1]. In this contribution, we report the development of a new in vitro bioengineered model of cardiac tissue. The model results from the assembly of a polymeric 3D multi-layered structure obtained by melt extrusion additive manufacturing of a custom-made poly(ester urethane) (PU) with a cell-loaded (human induced pluripotent stem cell derived-cardiomyocytes hiPSC-CMs) methacryloyl gelatin bio-ink.

11. Data mining of key genes expression in hepatocellular carcinoma: novel potential biomarkers of diagnosis prognosis or progression

Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the main cancer-related causes of death worldwide. The study aimed to perform a data mining analysis of the expression and regulatory role of key genes in HCC to reveal novel potential biomarkers of diagnosis prognosis, or progression since their availability is still almost lacking. Starting from data of our cohort of patients (HCV-positive HCC pts undergoing liver transplantation (LR, n = 10) and donors (LD, n = 14), deeply analyzed previously, in which apelin, osteopontin, osteoprotegerin, NOTCH-1, CASP-3, Bcl-2, BAX, PTX3, and NPTX2 were analyzed, we applied statistical analysis and in-silico tools (Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis, HCCDB database and GeneMania, UALCAN) to screen and identify the key genes. Firstly, we performed a stepwise regression analysis using our mRNA-datasets which revealed that higher expression levels of apelin and osteopontin were positively associated with the HCC and identified that the most consistently differentially expressed gene across multiple HCC expression datasets was only OPN. This comprehensive strategy of data mining evidenced that OPN might have a potential function as an important tumor marker-driven oncogenesis being associated with poor prognosis of HCC patients.
