Essential oils (EOs) and nature identical compounds (NICs) express different antimicrobial activity (AAc) which can be affected by variability in composition, stability over time, and the carrier employed for their inclusion in feedstuff and products for animal treatments. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the stability over time of the AAc of 8 EOs and 5 NICs, alone and in combination with Tween 20, on four major bacterial livestock pathogens (E. coli, S. Typhimurium, S. aureus and MRSA). For this purpose, minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and checkerboard assay (CkA) tests were performed on EOs and NICs at batch first use (T0 – only MIC), and after 12 (T1) and 24 (T2) months. Several EOs showed initial MICs lower than 2% (v/v) and, except for clove bud and cinnamon EOs, reduced their efficacy over time. The best NICs’ AAc was showed at T1 by cinnamic aldehyde (against MRSA), carvacrol (against E. coli), and thymol (except against MRSA), while at T2 the MIC values decreased for most of the NICs. The CkA between EOs and Tween 20 showed different interactions (Fractional Inhibitory Concentration -FIC- index from 0.06 to 32.04) based on bacteria and time. No interactions were found between NICs and Tween 20 (FIC index from 1.0 to 3.0). The AAc of EOs and NICs changes over time. Therefore, the preservation interval of these additives is critical for the AAc of feedstuff and products intended for livestock animals. Moreover, the NICs seem more suitable for the association with Tween 20.

The European Union promotes the development of a sustainable approach to solid waste management and disposal. Sewage sludge (SWS) is a good example of this economic model because it has fertilizing and soil-conditioning characteristics. This study employed a conventional manure spreader to evaluate the distribution of SWS on agricultural land. Various interpolation methods and machine learning models were employed to analyze the spatial distribution patterns of the sludge. Data were collected from 15 sampling trays across a controlled field during three separate trials. Statistical analysis using ANOVA highlighted significant variations in sludge quantities along the longitudinal axis but not along the latitudinal one. Interpolation methods, such as spline, cubic spline, and inverse distance weighting (IDW) were used to model the distribution, while machine learning models (k-nearest neighbors, random forest, neural networks) classified spatial patterns. Different performance metrics were calculated for each model. Among the interpolation methods, the IDW model combined with neural networks achieved the highest accuracy, with an MCC of 0.9820. The results highlight the potential for integrating advanced techniques into precision agriculture, improving application efficiency and reducing environmental impact. This approach provides a solid basis for optimizing the operation of agricultural machinery and supporting sustainable waste management practices.

Active biomonitoring of mercury (Hg) using non-indigenous moss bags was performed for the first time within and around the former Hg mining area of Abbadia San Salvatore (Mt. Amiata, central Italy). The purpose was to discern the Hg spatial distribution, identify the most polluted areas, and evaluate the impacts of dry and wet deposition on mosses. The exposed moss bags consisted of a mixture of Sphagnum fuscum and Sphagnum tenellum from an external uncontaminated area. In each site, two different types of moss bags, one uncovered (to account for the wet + dry deposition) and one covered (to evaluate the dry deposition), were exposed. The behavior of arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) in the mosses was investigated to assess the potential relationship with Hg. GEM (Gaseous Elemental Mercury) concentrations were also measured at the same sites where the mosses were exposed, although only as a reference in the initial stages of biomonitoring. The results revealed that the main Hg emissions sources were associated with the former mining area of Abbadia San Salvatore, in agreement with the measured GEM concentrations, while arsenic and antimony were related to soil enriched in As-Sb waste material. The three elements registered higher concentrations in uncovered mosses with respect to the covered ones, i.e., wet deposition was the key factor for their accumulation on the uncovered mosses, while dry deposition was especially important for the covered samples in the mining area. Hg was accumulated in the mosses via GEM adsorption, uptake of particulate Hg, and precipitation via raindrops/snowfall, with almost no loss and without post-deposition volatilization. The results testified that the chosen biomonitoring technique was an extremely useful tool for understanding Hg transport and fate in a contaminated area.

IntroductionBlood pressure (BP) regulation is a complex process involving several factors, among which water-sodium balance holds a prominent place. Arginin-vasopressin (AVP), a key player in water metabolism, has been evoked in hypertension development since the 1980s, but, to date, the matter is still controversial. Hyaluronic acid metabolism has been reported to be involved in renal water management, and AVP appears to increase hyaluronidase activity resulting in decreased high-molecular-weight hyaluronan content in the renal interstitium, facilitating water reabsorption in collecting ducts. Hence, our aim was to evaluate urinary hyaluronidase activity in response to an oral water load in hypertensive patients (HT, n=21) compared to normotensive subjects with (NT+, n=36) and without (NT-, n=29) a family history of hypertension, and to study its association with BP and AVP system activation, expressed by serum copeptin levels and urine Aquaporin 2 (AQP2)/creatinine ratio.MethodsEighty-six Caucasian men were studied. Water load test consisted in oral administration of 15–20 ml of water/kg body weight over 40–45 min. BP, heart rate, serum copeptin, urine hyaluronidase activity and AQP2 were monitored for 4 hours.ResultsIn response to water drinking, BP raised in all groups with a peak at 20–40 min. Baseline levels of serum copeptin, urinary hyaluronidase activity and AQP2/creatinine ratio were similar among groups and all decreased after water load, reaching their nadir at 120 min and then gradually recovering to baseline values. Significantly, a blunted reduction in serum copeptin, urinary hyaluronidase activity and AQP2/creatinine ratio was observed in NT+ compared to NT- subjects. A strong positive correlation was also found between urinary hyaluronidase activity and AQP2/creatinine ratio, and, although limited to the NT- group, both parameters were positively associated with systolic BP.DiscussionOur results demonstrate for the first time the existence in men of a close association between urinary hyaluronidase activity and vasopressinergic system and suggest that NT+ subjects have a reduced ability to respond to water loading possibly contributing to the blood volume expansion involved in early-stage hypertension. Considering these data, AVP could play a central role in BP regulation by affecting water metabolism through both hyaluronidase activity and AQP2 channel expression.

ABSTRACT: A short-term study was conducted to compare the effect of using poplar wood chips (PWC) instead of wheat straw (WS) litter in dairy cows. A total of 38 lactating Holstein cows (204 ± 119 days in milk, 26.9 ± 6.5 kg of milk yield [MY]) were housed in a tiestall farm for a 10-d trial including 5 d of adaptation followed by 5 sampling days (from d 5 to 10). Cows were divided into 2 homogeneous groups: one group was bedded with WS, and the second with PWC. Both litter materials were provided in the amount of 7 kg/stall per d. Each group was composed of 3 subgroups of 6 or 7 cows; the subgroups were physically separated along the feeding line by wooden boards. During the sampling days, fecal composition, used litter composition, and bacterial count (Clostridium spp., Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus, and total bacterial count) were analyzed by subgroup twice a day. On d 1 and from d 5 to 10, udder hygiene score and cow cleanliness score were also evaluated individually twice a day. Meanwhile MY, milk hygiene (total bacterial count [TBC], coliform bacterial count [CBC], and spore-forming units [SFU]) and quality were measured and analyzed from 9 animals per group. Moreover, individual animal behavior (body position and behavioral traits) and subgroup dry matter intake were measured on d 9 and 10. Fecal dry matter did not differ between groups, PWC had the lowest used litter moisture and N content favoring the highest clean cow frequency, but also gave rise to the greatest used litter microbial contamination. The MY, milk quality, TBC, SFU, and CBC were similar. The lying behavior frequency was similar between groups. However, the PWC group showed the lowest sleeping frequency, the highest frequency of other behaviors (including discomfort signs), and the lowest dry matter intake. However, despite this apparent reduction in cow comfort, no biologically important differences were observed in this short-term study between cows on PWC and WS in milk production or hygiene.

Hempseed oil (HSO) is extremely rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic (18:2 n-6) and α-linolenic (18:3 n-3) acids, which determine its high sensitivity to oxidative and photo-oxidative degradations that can lead to rancidity despite the presence of antioxidant compounds. The aim of this work was to evaluate which material/temperature/light solutions better preserve HSO quality during its shelf life and to test NIR as a rapid, non-destructive technique for monitoring oxidation phenomena. Futura 75 hemp seeds were cold-pressed; the oil was packed into 20 mL vials of four different materials (polypropylene, clear glass, amber glass, and amber glass coated with aluminum foil) and stored for 270 days at 25 °C under diffused light and at 10 °C in dark conditions., Peroxides and conjugated dienes and trienes were evaluated at intervals to monitor oil stability. Moreover, NIR spectra were measured in transmission, and the sample dataset was analyzed using ASCA to test the significance of the experimental factors: the model showed the significance of all factors and of all the simple interactions. Our results demonstrate that oil stored in amber glass vials with aluminum foils at refrigerated temperatures receive the highest protection from environmental conditions, mitigating oxidative changes, and that the NIR technique could be used to rapidly monitor HSO oxidation parameters.

Introduction In Italy, it was recently estimated that the total economic burden for schizophrenia is € 2.7 billions, of which around 50% is derived from direct costs and 81% of these are due to hospitalization, residential facilities and semi-residential facilities, whereas only 10% of direct costs is derived from pharmacotherapy (Marcellusi et al. BMJ Open 2018; 8, e018359). Considered the high economic burden that schizophrenia has on healthcare systems (estimated to be between 1.4 % and 3 % of the total), a better characterization of the clinical variables that mostly influence the costs represent a topic of great clinical interest (Altamura et al. 2014 Official Journal of the Italian Society of Psychopathology 2014; 20, 223–243). Objectives The aim of this study was to analyze whether duration of illness has an impact on the costs derived from the use of services (which account for the majority of the direct costs) in a cohort of subjects living with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). Methods A total of 496 subjects receiving treatment from the Community Mental Health Centers (CMHC) of Brescia (Italy) were included in the study: for each patient demographic data, data regarding the duration of illness (in months), and data related to the use of service between January 1st, 2022 and December 31st, 2022 were derived from the regional database of mental health (“SIPRL”). Data on the use of service were then converted to costs using the regional rate tables for outpatient services, residential and semi-residential facilities, and the Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRG)-driven rate tables for hospitalization data. The present work investigates the structure and the process of adaptation of some scriptural references from the New Testament in the Life of Feodosij Pečerskij. In the vast scriptural repertoire the loci chosen for the analysis gather around a few of the numerous themes, milestones of the monk’s spiritual life. Among the forms of citations and references, moreover, some similitudes and analogies were considered, in which, in addition to the persistent semantic and linguistic connections with the source text, we looked at the user and the possible intentions of the author in the process of building the exemplum.

Abstract High‐temperature geothermal areas are often characterized by widespread surficial manifestations, whose location is strictly controlled by sets of faults of regional relevance. The geochemical and isotopic signature of the discharged fluids can reveal key information on the geothermal fluids pathway, shedding light on the sources and fluid‐rock interaction within the geothermal reservoirs. In this paper, a geochemical and structural data set from the Larderello geothermal area and surroundings is presented and discussed. We constrain the role of transfer and normal faults in controlling the geothermal circulation enhanced by a cooling magmatic intrusion underneath the Lago area (SW of Larderello). The structural control on the fluids circulation is highlighted by both the location of the CO2 emissions along the fault segments, where permeability is enhanced, and their degassing rates, which increase moving away from the core of the Larderello geothermal system. The main results unravel the presence of deep regional pathways along which endogenous fluids circulate before being discharged in the investigated areas. The peripheral zone emissions are affected by interaction with shallow aquifers and condensation processes whereas the CO2 emitted from the central areas, located near the core of the geothermal system, was accompanied by high amounts of steam, and suffers intense shallow fractionation processes. The environmental impact of mining and smelting in the world-class Monte Amiata mercury (Hg) ore field has long been studied, before and after the final closure in 1982. A first summary was presented in 2015. With this contribution, we review the studies conducted in the last eight years. The most significant results include ⅰ) Hg-isotope characterization of primary ore (cinnabar), smelting waste (calcines), soil, fish and stream sediments; ⅱ) analysis of the interplay between geomorphological evolution, fluvial dynamics and Hg distribution in the Paglia River catchment, which drains the main mining areas; ⅲ) an improved quantification of the Hg loads discharged to the Mediterranean Sea; ⅳ) the use of biomonitors to reveal the dispersion of Hg; ⅴ) new detailed surveys, including innovative techniques, of Hg distribution in air; ⅵ) specific investigations to support the ongoing reclamation at Abbadia San Salvatore, the main mining and smelting center of the district, and ⅶ) the assessment of the variability of Hg distribution in air, water and soil from the reclaimed Siele mine. Despite these progresses, there are further steps to be conducted to achieve optimal management of the wide contamination evidenced in this district. It is now fully clear that the diffuse character of contamination results in unfeasible hypotheses for total remediation. Therefore, the goal is that of a sustainable coexistence between contamination and human activities. This goal may involve the following activities: a) implementation of GIS-based contamination maps as a direct operational instrument for local authorities to tune up specific limitations and regulations of human activities (e.g., fishing, instream quarrying and wildfire management); b) mitigation measures such as increasing the vegetal cover of river banks to limit erosion and runoff, and c) continuous monitoring of air, water and soil contamination, including transfer to the food chain.

Among its many functions, soil represents the active natural medium for plant growth. Different soils have various structural characteristics, that correspond to their qualitative parameters in terms of physical, chemical, and biological fertility. Because of their extremely slow formation processes, soils are also a non-renewable resource, easily subject to degradative processes. Among their mineral constituents many agrarian soils present, in addition to the fine earth, variable percentages of coarse fractions in their arable layer, which interfere with the crop growth, requiring more energy to manage cultivation operations, and damaging the machinery up to making its use impractical. In these conditions, it becomes necessary to proceed with the soil destoning, particularly for the management of Precision Farming techniques. Depending on the percentages, sizes and types of coarse fractions, the soil destoning systems concern: (i) the collection and removal of stones from the field, (ii) the on-site stones crushing, and (iii) the stone burial. In this article, we report the first evaluation of a deep burial destoning system carried out in the CREA Experimental Center of Treviglio (Italy). With the described reclamation system, a significant long-term improvement of soil quality in a 600 mm thick arable layer was achieved; avoiding the shortcomings of the destoning systems as commonly applied in agricultural lands.
