16. Sizzle and Fizzle of Bath Bombs: An Inexpensive and Accessible Kinetics Experiment

Abstract

Cosmetic chemistry is a prevalent part of everyday life, but there are very few undergraduate laboratories that explore this topic. Here, we present a laboratory exercise in which students use fizzing bath tablets (better known as "bath bombs") to learn about introductory kinetics. Students created their own bath bombs by combining citric acid, baking soda, and Epsom salts and reacted them at a range of temperatures. Students observed a trend consistent with the Arrhenius equation and collision theory: the reaction time decreased as the temperature of the water increased. This experiment is ideal for first year undergraduate chemistry courses and was met with excitement and enthusiasm from the students who tested it. The experiment uses readily available and inexpensive ingredients, making it very accessible and an attractive demonstration for outreach events.

Abstract

Growing awareness of health and health care disparities highlights the importance of including information about race, ethnicity, and culture (REC) in health research. Reporting of REC factors in research publications, however, is notoriously imprecise and unsystematic. This article describes the development of a checklist to assess the comprehensiveness and the applicability of REC factor reporting in psychiatric research publications. The 16-item GAP-REACH checklist was developed through a rigorous process of expert consensus, empirical content analysis in a sample of publications (N = 1205), and interrater reliability (IRR) assessment (N = 30). The items assess each section in the conventional structure of a health research article. Data from the assessment may be considered on an item-by-item basis or as a total score ranging from 0% to 100%. The final checklist has excellent IRR (κ = 0.91). The GAP-REACH may be used by multiple research stakeholders to assess the scope of REC reporting in a research article.

37. Implementation Science: Why It Matters for the Future of Social Work

Abstract

Bridging the gap between research and practice is a critical frontier for the future of social work. Integrating implementation science into social work can advance our profession's effort to bring research and practice closer together. Implementation science examines the factors, processes, and strategies that influence the uptake, use, and sustainability of empirically supported interventions, practice innovations, and social policies in routine practice settings. The aims of this article are to describe the key characteristics of implementation science, illustrate how implementation science matters to social work by describing several contributions this field can make to reducing racial and ethnic disparities in mental health care, and outline a training agenda to help integrate implementation science in graduate-level social work programs.

42. Silicon Reduces Cadmium Accumulation and Improves Growth and Stomatal Traits in Sea Barley (Hordeum marinumHuds.) Exposed to Cadmium Stress

Abstract

Silicon (Si) is not deemed sensu stricto as an essential nutrient for higher plants, but it is known for its positive impact under environmental stress conditions. The present study hypothesizes that the addition of silicon (Si) could alleviate cadmium (Cd) toxicity and reduce its accumulation in sea barley. Twenty-day-old plants were hydroponically grown under controlled conditions at two Cd levels (0 and 25 µM) with (1 mM) or without Si supply. Several aspects of the plant morphology, photosynthetic activity, membrane stability, and the status of metals (Cd, Zn, and Fe) were assessed after 17 days. Statistical analyses (Duncan’s test p≤ 0.05) indicated that most studied parameters were altered by metal treatment, reflecting Cd toxicity. Plant growth, water status, carotenoid content, chlorophyll (Chl. a/Chl. b) ratio, carotenoid/(Chl. a+ Chl. b) ratio, gas exchanges, fluorescence parameters (ETR, qP, and NPQ), membrane stability, and Zn concentration in both roots and shoots were significantly impacted by Cd. However, plants simultaneously treated with Cd and Si supply showed a significant restoration in growth parameters, water content, and photosynthetic pigments. The mitigating effect of Si was associated with higher stomatal conductance, transpiration, chlorophyll fluorescence (ETR, qP, and NPQ) values, and better membrane stability. The attenuation of Cd’s toxic effect was also explained by the fact that Si prevented Cd uptake, as Si decreased Cd content in shoot and root tissues. The current study revealed that silicon supply to sea barley, grown under Cd stress, mitigates Cd toxicity and leads the way forward for similar studies on other cereal field crops.

44. Using the matrixed multiple case study methodology to understand site differences in the outcomes of a Hybrid Type 1 trial of a peer-led healthy lifestyle intervention for people with serious mental illness

Abstract

Site differences in implementation trial outcomes are common but often not examined. In a Hybrid Type 1 trial examining the effectiveness-implementation of a peer-led group life-style balance (PGLB) intervention for people with serious mental illness (SMI) in three supportive housing agencies, we found that PGLB recipients’ physical health outcomes differed by study sites. The matrixed multiple case study methodology was used to explore how implementation outcomes and changes in context of usual care (UC) services contributed to these site differences. Two implementation outcomes (i.e. PGLB fidelity ratings and intervention recipients’ acceptability of PGLB and UC) and changes in healthcare services integration at the study sites were examined. ANOVAs were used to examine site differences in fidelity ratings and client satisfaction. Directed content analysis was used to analyze leadership interviews to identify changes in the context of UC services. Site 3 showed a trend approaching significance (P= .05) towards higher fidelity ratings. High levels of satisfaction with PGLB were reported at all sites. Significant differences in PGLB recipients’ satisfaction with UC were found, with Site 3 reporting the lowest levels of satisfaction. Agency leaders reported an increase in prioritizing client’s health throughout the trial with sites differing in how these priorities were put into action. Differences in PGLB recipients’ satisfaction with UC, and changes in healthcare service integration seemed to have contributed to the site differences in our trial. The matrixed multiple case study methodology is a useful approach to identify implementation outcomes contributing to the heterogeneity of multisite implementation trial results.A matrixed multiple case study design is an innovative methodology that can help understand the context in which interventions are delivered in routine practice settings and how that may impact its overall success.A healthy lifestyle intervention delivered by people with lived experience of serious mental illness (SMI) led to improved health outcomes among participants living with SMI in three supportive housing agencies, but these outcomes differed by study sites. This study aimed to identify which factors influenced these site differences in study outcomes by examining if the intervention was delivered as intended, intervention recipients’ satisfaction with the intervention and the pre-existing health care services delivered at each study site, and what changes occurred in health care services offered at each of the supportive housing agencies throughout the study. The intervention was found to have high levels of satisfaction across all three agencies but the agency which had the best outcomes also had the highest levels of intervention delivery adherence and the lowest levels of intervention recipients’ satisfaction with existing health care services. Additionally, during the study period, the same agency described minimal changes in their existing health care services while the other two agencies were found to have made more significant changes integrating health care services to their day-to-day operations. As a result, findings from this study emphasize the importance of understanding the context in which interventions are delivered in routine practice settings to ensure their overall success.

46. A Systematic Review of Depression Treatments in Primary Care for Latino Adults

Abstract

Objective: A systematic literature review of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) assessing depression treatments in primary care for Latinos is conducted. The authors rate the methodological quality of studies, examine cultural and linguistic adaptations, summarize clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness findings, and draw conclusions for improving depression care among this diverse population. Method: Electronic bibliographic databases, Web sites, and manual searches are used to identify nine peer-reviewed articles covering four RCTs. Results: Across trials, collaborative care models were more effective than usual care in reducing depression and improving functioning and accessibility to guideline-congruent care. Conclusion: The use of evidence-based treatments in primary care seems to be an effective and cost-effective strategy to reduce mental health care disparities among Latinos served in primary care. 47. Latino Immigrant Men's Perceptions of Depression and Attitudes toward Help Seeking

Abstract

Perceptions of depression, attitudes toward depression treatments, help-seeking preferences, and perceived barriers to care were examined in a sample of 56 Latino immigrant men recruited from a primary health care clinic. Each participant was presented a vignette depicting an individual with major depression. Men described the vignette as a debilitating condition caused by social stressors that would improve with time. Men preferred counseling over medications and reported misconceptions about antidepressants. Faith in God and seeking help from family members were seen as important help-seeking strategies. Structural and financial barriers were prevalent among this sample of men. Implications for improving depression care for Latino immigrant men are discussed. (Contains 3 tables.)

48. Capacity-to-Consent in Psychiatric Research: Development and Preliminary Testing of a Screening Tool

Abstract

Objective: Assuring research participants' capacity to provide informed consent has become increasingly important in health and mental health research, and each study faces unique capacity-assessment challenges, possibly requiring its own screening tool. This article describes the development and preliminary testing of a capacity-to-consent tool constructed for a study of psychiatric diagnosing in a community clinic. Method: A 10-item screening device based on four legal standards for demonstrating capacity (understanding, appreciation, reasoning, and voluntarism) was created and tested with 68 adult patients entering the study. Results: Only five participants (7%) failed the screen, 61 (93%) passed. No participants who passed at entry were later found in psychiatric evaluations to lack capacity. Conclusion: The tool was effective in identifying persons who could not demonstrate consent capacity, thereby protecting prospective participants. (Contains 1 table.)
