Word embeddings trained on large scale text corpora are central to modern natural language processing and are also important as cognitive models and tools in psycholinguistic research. An important alternative to these text-based models are embeddings derived from word association norms. Recently, these association-based embeddings have been shown to outperform text-based word embeddings of comparable complexity (such as GloVE, word2Vec & fastText) in semantic similarity rating tasks. Here we evaluate English and Rioplatense Spanish association-based embeddings derived from the Small World of Words (SWOW) project on the Google Analogy set and the Bigger Analogy Test Set. We also developed a small analogy set that focuses on semantic relationships, such as event knowledge and category-exemplar relationships such as prototypicality. SWOW-derived word embeddings perform similarly as traditional text-based word embeddings in semantic analogies, and outform them in some categories. These results illustrate relevant similarities and differences between text-based and word association-derived embeddings.

Words carry affective connotations, but the role of these conno-tations in the representation of meaning is not well understood.Like other aspects of meaning, connotation might be cultureor language-specific. This study uses a large-scale relatednessjudgment task to determine the role of affective connotationsin concrete and abstract words in English, Rioplatense Span-ish, and Mandarin Chinese. Across languages, word valence,or how positive or negative a word is, was one of the main or-ganizing factors in both concrete and abstract concepts. More-over, predicted culture-specific affective connotations were re-liably found in the similarity space of abstract concepts. Afollow-up analysis was conducted to investigate whether distri-butional semantic representations derived from language simi-larly encodes these connotations using word embeddings. Thelanguage models did only partly captured the overall similaritystructure and the affective connotations shaping it.

Social comparison is central in human life and can be especially challenging in depression and social anxiety. We assessed event‐related potentials and emotions using a social comparison task in which participants received feedback on both their own and a co‐player's performance, in participants with depression and/or social anxiety (n = 63) and healthy controls (n = 72). Participants reported more negative emotions for downward (being better than the co‐player [participant correct, co‐player wrong]) and upward (being worse than the co‐player [participant wrong, co‐player correct]) comparisons versus even outcomes, with these effects being stronger in depression and social anxiety. At the Medial Frontal Negativity, both controls and depressed participants showed a more negative amplitude for upward comparison versus both the participant and co‐player performing wrong. Socially anxious subjects showed the opposite effect, possibly due to greater expectations about being worse than others. The P300 decreased for downward and upward comparisons compared to even outcomes, which may relate to the higher levels of conflict of social inequality. Depressed and socially anxious subjects showed a blunted P300 increase over time in response to the task outcomes, suggesting deficits in allocating resources for the attention of incoming social information. The LPP showed increased amplitude for downward and upward comparison versus the even outcomes and no group effect. Emotional findings suggest that social comparisons are more difficult for depressed and socially anxious individuals. Event‐related potentials findings may shed light on the neural substrates of these difficulties. This is the first study investigating neural responses to social comparison in participants with symptoms of depression and social anxiety, and healthy controls. Results showed heightened negative emotions and distinct event‐related potentials in participants with these disorders compared to controls. In unequal societies the effectiveness of formal education depends on the socioeconomic status (SES) of students. Studies have shown that poverty affects the development of the brain in ways that might compromise future learning, thus increasing the differences between groups with different SES. Interest is growing in the development of tools that might change this state of affairs. This article presents a tablet-based study aimed at determining the cognitive abilities related to primary school children's math learning. The study followed the students' changes during a short intervention, the purpose of which was to improve students' performance of some of the core components of mathematical cognition; in particular, of the approximate number system (ANS), a system that supports one's ability to estimate quantities and to compare time intervals. The article presents the study's characteristics and shows how the variables that were evaluated--ANS precision, time discrimination accuracy, digit span, and mathematical achievement--depend on SES. We employ multiple regressions to show that the variance in mathematics performance attributed to SES can be explained by differences in underlying cognitive factors. The study also indicates that those students of low-SES schools who participated in more tablet activities increased their performance more than students who did fewer activities. Although the intervention's initial objective was to influence mathematical development and the study is not a randomized double-blind study, we argue that training the ANS can have positive effects in mathematics learning, and that this might benefit children living in low-SES contexts more than those in the general population, perhaps because of the former's initially low levels of performance in school mathematics.

Acoustic cues play a major role in social interactions in many animal species. In addition to the semantic contents of human speech, voice attributes – e.g., voice pitch, formant position, formant dispersion, etc. – have been proposed to provide critical information for the assessment of potential rivals and mates. However, prior studies exploring the association of acoustic attributes with reproductive success, or some of its proxies, have produced mixed results. Here, we investigate whether the mean fundamental frequency (F0), formant position (Pf), and formant dispersion (Df) – dimorphic attributes of the human voice – are related to sociosexuality, as measured by the Revised Sociosexual Orientation Inventory (SOI-R) – a trait also known to exhibit sex differences – in a sample of native Spanish-speaking students (101 males, 147 females). Analyses showed a significant negative correlation between F0 and sociosexual behavior, and between Pf and sociosexual desire in males but not in females. These correlations remained significant after correcting for false discovery rate (FDR) and controlling for age, a potential confounding variable. Our results are consistent with a role of F0 and Pf serving as cues in the mating domain in males but not in females. Alternatively, the association of voice attributes and sociosexual orientation might stem from the parallel effect of male sex hormones both on the male brain and the anatomical structures involved in voice production. The iterated prisoner's dilemma (iPD) game is a well-established model for testing how people cooperate, and the neural processes that unfold after its distinct outcomes have been partly described. Recent theoretical models suggest evolution favors intuitive cooperation, which raises questions on the behavioral but also neural timelines involved. We studied the outcome/feedback stage of iPD rounds with electroencephalography (EEG) methods. Results showed that neural signals associated with this stage also relate to future choice, in an outcome-dependent manner: (i) after zero-gain "sucker's payoffs" (unreciprocated cooperation), a participant's decision thereafter relates to changes to the feedback-related negativity (FRN); (ii) after one-sided non-cooperation (participant wins at co-player's expense), by the P3; (iii) after mutual cooperation, by late frontal delta-band modulations. Critically, faster reciprocation behavior towards a co-player's choice to cooperate was predicted, on a single-trial basis, by players' P3 and frontal delta modulations at the immediately preceding trial. Delta-band signaling is discussed in relation to homeostatic regulation processing in the literature. The findings relate the early outcome/feedback stage to subsequent decisional processes in the iPD, providing a first neural account of the brief timelines implied in heuristic modes of cooperation. Attention shapes our consciousness content and perception by increasing the probability of becoming aware and/or better encoding a selection of the incoming inner or outer sensory world. Engaging interoceptive and exteroceptive attention should elicit distinctive neural responses to visceral and external stimuli and could be useful in detecting covert command-following in unresponsive patients. We designed a task to engage healthy participants' attention toward their heartbeats or auditory stimuli and investigated whether brain dynamics and the heartbeat-evoked potential (HEP) distinguished covert interoceptive-exteroceptive attention. Exteroceptive attention yielded an overall flattening of the power spectral density (PSD), whereas during interoception, there was a decrease in complexity, an increase in frontal connectivity and theta oscillations, and a modulation of the HEP. Subject-level classifiers based on HEP features classified the attentional state of 17/20 participants. Kolmogorov complexity, permutation entropy, and weighted symbolic mutual information showed comparable accuracy in classifying covert attention and exhibited a synergic behavior with the HEP features. PSD features demonstrated exceptional performance (20/20). Command-following was assessed in five brain-injured patients with a modified version of the task. An unresponsive wakefulness syndrome/vegetative state patient and a locked-in syndrome patient demonstrated a willful modulation of the HEP and together with the explored brain markers suggest that patients were complying with task instructions. Our findings underscore the importance of attentional mechanisms in shaping interoceptive and exteroceptive sensory processing and expand the framework of heart-brain interactions employed for diagnostic purposes in patients with disorders of consciousness., (© The Author(s) 2024.
