4. Do We Know What They Are Thinking? Theory of Mind and Affect in the Classroom

Abstract

Research on Theory of Mind explores how we develop the capacity to understand that others have thoughts and feelings that differ from our own and how we are compelled to "read" them. However, a preponderance of evidence from the cognitive humanities and cognitive neurosciences tells us that our readings are often misguided or just plain wrong. None of this work has considered how teachers and learners might engage in open conversations about theory to mind to identify misperceptions and enhance their understanding of one another's thoughts and reactions in the classroom. In this essay, we explore how using what we call "Theory of Mind'ing'" as a rhetorical device may invite moments of vulnerability and of clarification when we engage in learning with our students, thus enhancing classroom dynamics. We describe how the idea of Theory of Mind'ing' developed, present an initial evaluation of it by students, and situate this technique in the rich literature about affect and pedagogy. We propose that using Theory of Mind'ing' in the classroom can be used to encourage more authentic and interactive engagement.

Abstract

Abstract Background Migraine is a chronic neurologic disease that can severely affect the patient's quality of life. Although in recent years many randomised studies have been carried out to investigate the effectiveness of acupuncture as a treatment for migraine, it remains a controversial issue. Our aim is to determine whether acupuncture, applied under real conditions of clinical practice in the area of primary healthcare, is more effective than conventional treatment. Methods/Design The design consists of a pragmatic multi-centre, three-armed randomised controlled trial, complemented with an economic evaluation of the results achieved, comparing the effectiveness of verum acupuncture with sham acupuncture, and with a control group receiving normal care only. Patients eligible for inclusion will be those presenting in general practice with migraine and for whom their General Practitioner (GP) is considering referral for acupuncture. Sampling will be by consecutive selection, and by randomised allocation to the three branches of the study, in a centralised way following a 1:1:1 distribution (verum acupuncture; sham acupuncture; conventional treatment). Secondly, one patient in three will be randomly selected from each of the acupuncture (verum or sham) groups for a brain perfusion study (by single photon emission tomography). The treatment with verum acupuncture will consist of 8 treatment sessions, once a week, at points selected individually by the acupuncturist. The sham acupuncture group will receive 8 sessions, one per week, with treatment being applied at non-acupuncture points in the dorsal and lumbar regions, using the minimal puncture technique. The control group will be given conventional treatment, as will the other two groups. Discussion This trial will contribute to available evidence on acupuncture for the treatment of migraine. The primary endpoint is the difference in the number of days with migraine among the three groups, between the baseline period (the 4 weeks prior to the start of treatment) and the period from weeks 9 to 12. As a secondary aspect, we shall record the index of laterality and the percentage of change in the mean count per pixel in each region of interest measured by the brain perfusion tomography, performed on a subsample of the patients within the real and sham acupuncture groups. 14. Real‐world data on the efficacy and safety of hedgehog pathway inhibitors in patients with basal cell carcinoma: Experience of a tertiary Australian centre.

Abstract

Background: Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are the most common cancers worldwide. Although most BCCs are amenable to local treatment, there are limited therapeutic options for surgically unresectable locally advanced and metastatic BCCs. Activation of the sonic hedgehog signalling pathway plays a significant role in the development of most BCCs. Hedgehog pathway inhibitors (HPIs) can be used to inhibit this pathway. Efficacy and safety data on HPI use in Australia is scarce. Objectives: This study aims to present the effectiveness and safety of HPI at a tertiary dermatology referral centre. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the clinical charts of all patients with BCC treated with an HPI at a tertiary Dermatology referral centre in New South Wales, Australia from 1 January 2016 to 1 July 2023. Results: Twenty‐three patients with BCCs were treated with an HPI; 11 locally advanced, 8 multiple, 3 basal cell naevus syndrome and 1 metastatic. All patients were of Caucasian background, with a median age of 56. Across 41 treatment cycles, the median treatment duration was 4 months. The overall response rate (ORR) was 20/23 (87%) and complete response (CR) rate was 9/23 (39%); patients treated with sonidegib achieved an ORR of 11/12 (92%) and CR of 4/12 (33%), and vismodegib‐treated patients achieved an ORR of 9/11 (82%) and CR of 5/11 (45%). Patients who responded to HPI treatment also responded to a subsequent HPI rechallenge. Common treatment emergent adverse events (TEAEs) included muscle spasms, dysgeusia and alopecia. Dysgeusia was more frequent with vismodegib than sonidegib (p = 0.0001). There was no evidence to suggest a difference in other TEAEs between the two HPIs. Four treatment cycles were stopped due to grade 3 muscle spasm. Conclusions: In our cohort of 23 patients being treated with HPI, the ORR was 87% and CR was 39%. All patients who experienced TEAEs and had a drug holiday successfully responded to HPI rechallenge. TEAEs, particularly muscle spasms, are common reasons for treatment cessation. Abstract

While pesticide use is subject to strict regulatory oversight worldwide, it remains a main concern for environmental protection, including biodiversity conservation. This is partly due to the current regulatory approach that relies on separate assessments for each single pesticide, crop use, and non-target organism group at local scales. Such assessments tend to overlook the combined effects of overall pesticide usage at larger spatial scales. Integrative landscape-based approaches are emerging, enabling the consideration of agricultural management, the environmental characteristics, and the combined effects of pesticides applied in a same or in different crops within an area. These developments offer the opportunity to deliver informative risk predictions relevant for different decision contexts including their connection to larger spatial scales and to combine environmental risks of pesticides, with those from other environmental stressors. We discuss the needs, challenges, opportunities and available tools for implementing landscape-based approaches for prospective and retrospective pesticide Environmental Risk Assessments (ERA). A set of “building blocks” that emerged from the discussions have been integrated into a conceptual framework. The framework includes elements to facilitate its implementation, in particular: flexibility to address the needs of relevant users and stakeholders; means to address the inherent complexity of environmental systems; connections to make use of and integrate data derived from monitoring programs; and options for validation and approaches to facilitate future use in a regulatory context. The conceptual model can be applied to existing ERA methodologies, facilitating its comparability, and highlighting interoperability drivers at landscape level. 29. Stochastic dynamics of particles trapped in turbulent flows

Abstract

The long time dynamics of large particles trapped in two inhomogeneous turbulent shear flows is studied experimentally. Both flows present a common feature, a shear region that separates two colliding circulations, but with different spatial symmetries and temporal behaviors. Because large particles are less and less sensitive to flow fluctuations as their size increases, we observe the emergence of a slow dynamics corresponding to back-and-forth motions between two attractors, and a super-slow regime synchronized with flow reversals when they exist. Such dynamics is substantially reproduced by a one dimensional stochastic model of an over-damped particle trapped in a two-well potential, forced by a colored noise. An extended model is also proposed that reproduces observed dynamics and trapping without potential barrier: the key ingredient is the ratio between the time scales of the noise correlation and the particle dynamics. A total agreement with experiments requires the introduction of spatially inhomogeneous fluctuations and a suited confinement strength.

Abstract

Guided by the relationship between the breadth-first walk of a rooted tree and its sequence of generation sizes, we are able to include immigration in the Lamperti representation of continuous-state branching processes. We provide a representation of continuous-state branching processes with immigration by solving a random ordinary differential equation driven by a pair of independent Levy processes. Stability of the solutions is studied and gives, in particular, limit theorems (of a type previously studied by Grimvall, Kawazu and Watanabe and by Li) and a simulation scheme for continuous-state branching processes with immigration. Abstract

We use a correlation function analysis of the field quadratures to characterize both the black body radiation emitted by a 50 Ohm load resistor and the quantum properties of two types of beam splitters in the microwave regime. To this end, we first study vacuum fluctuations as a function of frequency in a Planck spectroscopy experiment and then measure the covariance matrix of weak thermal states. Abstract

Quantum state reconstruction involves measurement devices that are usually described by idealized models, but not known in full detail in experiments. For weak propagating microwaves, the detection process requires linear amplifiers which obscure the signal with random noise. Here, we introduce a theory which nevertheless allows one to use these devices for measuring all quadrature moments of propagating quantum microwaves based on cross-correlations from a dual-path amplification setup. Simultaneously, the detector noise properties are determined, allowing for tomography. Abstract

In this paper we introduce a new class of L\'evy processes which we call hypergeometric-stable L\'evy processes, because they are obtained from symmetric stable processes through several transformations and where the Gauss hypergeometric function plays an essential role. We characterize the L\'evy measure of this class and obtain several useful properties such as the Wiener Hopf factorization, the characteristic exponent and some associated exit problems.
