Abstract Background The application of semi-conductor detectors such as cadmium–zinc–telluride (CZT) in nuclear medicine improves extrinsic energy resolution and count sensitivity due to the direct conversion of gamma photons into electric signals. A 3D-ring pixelated CZT system named StarGuide was recently developed and implemented by GE HealthCare for SPECT acquisition. The system consists of 12 detector columns with seven modules of 16 × 16 CZT pixelated crystals, each with an integrated parallel-hole tungsten collimator. The axial coverage is 27.5 cm. The detector thickness is 7.25 mm, which allows acquisitions in the energy range [40–279] keV. Since there is currently no performance characterization specific to 3D-ring CZT SPECT systems, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) NU 1-2018 clinical standard can be tailored to these cameras. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the SPECT/CT StarGuide system according to the NEMA NU 1-2018 clinical standard specifically adapted to characterize the new 3D-ring CZT. Results Due to the integrated collimator, the system geometry and the pixelated nature of the detector, some NEMA tests have been adapted to the features of the system. The extrinsic measured energy resolution was about 5–6% for the tested isotopes (99mTc, 123I and 57Co); the maximum count rate was 760 kcps and the observed count rate at 20% loss was 917 kcps. The system spatial resolution in air extrapolated at 10 cm with 99mTc was 7.2 mm, while the SPECT spatial resolutions with scatter were 4.2, 3.7 and 3.6 mm in a central, radial and tangential direction respectively. Single head sensitivity value for 99mTc was 97 cps/MBq; with 12 detector columns, the system volumetric sensitivity reached 520 kcps MBq−1 cc−1. Conclusions The performance tests of the StarGuide can be performed according to the NEMA NU 1-2018 standard with some adaptations. The system has shown promising results, particularly in terms of energy resolution, spatial resolution and volumetric sensitivity, potentially leading to higher quality clinical images.

Abstract Copper-zinc-tin Cu2ZnSn (CZT) thin films are promising materials for solar cell applications. This thin film was deposited on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) using an electrochemical deposition hierarchy. X-ray diffraction of thin-film studies confirms the variation in the structural orientation of CZT on the FTO surface. As the pH of the solution is increased, the nature of the CZT thin-film aggregate changes from a fern-like leaf CZT dendrite crystal to a disk pattern. The FE-SEM surface micrograph shows the dendrite fern leaf and sharp edge disks. The 2-D diffusion limitation aggregation under slippery conditions for ternary thin films was performed for the first time. The simulation showed that by changing the diffusing species, the sticking probability was responsible for the pH-dependent morphological change. Convincingly, diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) simulations confirm that the initial structure of copper is responsible for the final structure of the CZT thin films. An experimental simulation with pH as a controlled parameter revealed phase transition in CZT thin films. The top and back contact of Ag-CZT thin films based on Schottky behavior give a better electronic mechanism in superstrate and substrate solar cells.

BackgroundSingle photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is an imaging modality that has demonstrated its utility in a number of clinical indications. Despite this progress, a high sensitivity, high spatial resolution, multi-tracer SPECT with a large field of view suitable for whole-body imaging of a broad range of radiotracers for theranostics is not available.PurposeWith the goal of filling this technological gap, we have designed a cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) full-ring SPECT scanner instrumented with a broad-energy tungsten collimator. The final purpose is to provide a multi-tracer solution for brain and whole-body imaging. Our static SPECT does not rely on the dual- and the triple-head rotational SPECT standard paradigm, enabling a larger effective area in each scan to increase the sensitivity. We provide a demonstration of the performance of our design using a realistic model of our detector with simulated body-sized phantoms filled with 99m Tc and 177 Lu.MethodsWe create a realistic model of our detector by using a combination of a Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission (GATE) Monte Carlo simulation and a finite element model for the CZT response, accounting for low-energy tail effects in CZT that affects the sensitivity and the scatter correction. We implement a modified dual-energy-window scatter correction adapted for CZT. Other corrections for attenuation, detector and collimator response, and detector gaps and edges are also included. The images are reconstructed using the maximum-likelihood expectation-maximization. Detector and reconstruction performance are characterized with point sources, Derenzo phantoms, and a body-sized National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) Image Quality (IQ) phantom for both 99m Tc and 177 Lu.ResultsOur SPECT design can resolve 7.9 mm rods for 99m Tc (140 keV) and 9.5 mm for 177 Lu (208 keV) in a hot-rod Derenzo phantom with a 3-min exposure and reach an image contrast of 78% for 99m Tc and 57% for 177 Lu using the NEMA IQ phantom with a 6-min exposure. Our modified scatter correction shows an improved contrast-recovery ratio compared to a standard correction.ConclusionsIn this paper, we demonstrate the good performance of our design for whole-body imaging purposes. This adds to our previous demonstration of improved qualitative and quantitative 99m Tc imaging of brain perfusion and 123 I imaging of dopamine transport with respect to state-of-the-art NaI dual-head cameras. We show that our design provides similar IQ and contrast to the commercial full-ring SPECT VERITON for 99m Tc. Regarding 177 Lu imaging of the 208 keV emissions, our design provides similar contrast to that of other state-of-the-art SPECTs with a significant reduction in exposure. The high sensitivity and extended energy range up to 250 keV makes our SPECT design a promising alternative for clinical imaging and theranostics of emerging radionuclides.

Abstract Background Large field of view CZT SPECT cameras with a ring geometry are available for some years now. Thanks to their good sensitivity and high temporal resolution, general dynamic SPECT imaging may be performed more easily, without resorting to dedicated systems. To evaluate the dynamic SPECT imaging by such cameras, we have performed an in vivo pilot study to analyze the kidney function of a pig and compare the results to standard dynamic planar imaging by a conventional gamma camera. Methods A 7-week-old (12 kg) female Landrace pig was injected with [99mTc]Tc-MAG3 and a 30 min dynamic SPECT acquisition of the kidneys was performed on a CZT ring camera. A fast SPECT/CT was acquired with the same camera immediately after the dynamic SPECT, without moving the pig, and used for attenuation correction and drawing regions of interest. The next day the same pig underwent a dynamic planar imaging of the kidneys by a conventional 2-head gamma camera. The dynamic SPECT acquisition was reconstructed using a MLEM algorithm with up to 20 iterations, with and without attenuation correction. Time-activity curves of the total counts of each kidney were extracted from 2D and 3D dynamic images. An adapted 2-compartment model was derived to fit the data points and extract physiological parameters. Comparison of these parameters was performed between the different reconstructions and acquisitions. Results Time-activity curves were nicely fitted with the 2-compartment model taking into account the anesthesia and bladder filling. Kidney physiological parameters were found in agreement with literature values. Good agreement of these parameters was obtained for the right kidney between dynamic SPECT and planar imaging. Regional analysis of the kidneys can be performed in the case of the dynamic SPECT imaging and provided good agreement with the whole kidney results. Conclusions Dynamic SPECT imaging is feasible with CZT swiveling-detector ring cameras and provides results in agreement with dynamic planar imaging by conventional gamma cameras. Regional analysis of organs uptake and clearance becomes possible. Further studies are required regarding the optimization of acquisition and reconstruction parameters to improve image quality and enable absolute quantification.

AbstractMachine learning has been found to be ubiquitously useful across many industries, presenting an opportunity to improve radiation detection performance using data-driven algorithms. Improved detector resolution can aid in the detection, identification, and quantification of radionuclides. In this work, a novel, data-driven, unsupervised learning approach is developed to improve detector spectral characteristics by learning, and subsequently rejecting, poorly performing regions of the pixelated detector. Feature engineering is used to fit individual characteristic photo peaks to a Doniach lineshape with a linear background model. Then, principal component analysis is used to learn a lower-dimension latent space representation of each photo peak where the pixels are clustered, and subsequently ranked, based on the cluster mean distance to an optimal point. Pixels within the worst cluster(s) are rejected to improve the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) by 10% to 15% (relative to the bulk detector) at 50% net efficiency when applied to training data obtained from measurements of a 100 μCi 154Eu source using a H3D M400i pixelated cadmium zinc telluride detector.These results compare well with, but do not outperform, a greedy algorithm that accumulates pixels in order of FWHM from lowest to highest used as a benchmark. In the future, this approach can be extended to include the detector energy and angular response. Abstract Background In image processing for activity quantification, the end goal is to produce a metric that is independent of the measurement geometry. Photon attenuation needs to be accounted for and can be accomplished utilizing spectral information, avoiding the need of additional image acquisitions. The aim of this work is to investigate the feasibility of 177Lu activity quantification with a small CZT-based hand-held gamma-camera, using such an attenuation correction method. Methods A previously presented dual photopeak method, based on the differential attenuation for two photon energies, is adapted for the three photopeaks at 55 keV, 113 keV, and 208 keV for 177Lu. The measurement model describes the count rates in each energy window as a function of source depth and activity, accounting for distance-dependent system sensitivity, attenuation, and build-up. Parameter values are estimated from characterizing measurements, and the source depth and activity are obtained by minimizing the difference between measured and modelled count rates. The method is applied and evaluated in phantom measurements, in a clinical setting for superficial lesions in two patients, and in a pre-clinical setting for one human tumour xenograft. Evaluation is made for a LEHR and an MEGP collimator. Results For phantom measurements at clinically relevant depths, the average (and standard deviation) in activity errors are 17% ± 9.6% (LEHR) and 2.9% ± 3.6% (MEGP). For patient measurements, deviations from activity estimates from planar images from a full-sized gamma-camera are 0% ± 21% (LEHR) and 16% ± 18% (MEGP). For mouse measurements, average deviations of − 16% (LEHR) and − 6% (MEGP) are obtained when compared to a small-animal SPECT/CT system. The MEGP collimator appears to be better suited for activity quantification, yielding a smaller variability in activity estimates, whereas the LEHR results are more severely affected by septal penetration. Conclusions Activity quantification for 177Lu using the hand-held camera is found to be feasible. The readily available nature of the hand-held camera may enable more frequent activity quantification in e.g., superficial structures in patients or in the pre-clinical setting.

CdZnTe (CZT) is a new type of compound semiconductor that has emerged in recent years. Compared to other semiconductor materials, it possesses an ideal bandgap, high density, and high electron mobility, rendering it an excellent room-temperature composite semiconductor material for X-ray and γ-ray detectors. Due to the exceptional performance of CZT material, detectors manufactured using it exhibit high energy resolution, spatial resolution, and detection efficiency. They also have the advantage of operating at room temperature. CZT array detectors, furthermore, demonstrate outstanding spatial detection and three-dimensional imaging capabilities. Researchers worldwide have conducted extensive studies on this subject. This paper, building upon this foundation, provides a comprehensive analysis of CZT crystals and CZT array detectors and summarizes existing research to offer valuable insights for envisioning new detector methodologies. Background: A CZT (cadmium zinc telluride) PET (positron emission tomography) system is being developed at Stanford University. CZT has the promise of outperforming scintillator‐based systems in energy and spatial resolution but has relatively poor coincidence timing resolution. Purpose: To supplement GATE (GEANT 4 Application for Emission Tomography) simulations with charge transport and electronics modeling for a high‐resolution CZT PET system. Methods: A conventional GATE simulation was supplemented with electron‐hole transport modeling and experimentally measured single detector energy resolution to improve the system‐level understanding of a CZT high‐resolution PET system in development at Stanford University. The modeling used GATE hits data and applied charge transport in the crystal and RC‐CR processing of the simulated signals to model the electronics, including leading‐edge discriminators and peak pick‐off. Depth correction was also performed on the simulation data. Experimentally acquired data were used to determine energy resolution parameters and were compared to simulation data. Results: The distributions of the coincidence timing, anode energy, and cathode energy are consistent with experimental data. Numerically, the simulation achieved 153 ns FWHM coincidence time resolution (CTR), which is of the same order of magnitude as the raw 210 ns CTR previously found experimentally. Further, the anode energy resolution was found to be 5.9% FWHM (full width at half maximum) at 511 keV in the simulation, which is between the experimental value found for a single crystal of 3% and the value found for the dual‐panel setup of 8.02%, after depth correction. Conclusions: Developing this advanced simulation improves upon the limitations of GATE for modeling semiconductor PET systems and provides a means for deeper analysis of the coincidence timing resolution and other complementary electron‐hole dependent system parameters. The secondary objective was to determine radiation doses for the tracer administration and for the additional Computed Tomography (CT) scan. Methods Cross-calibration factors were determined using a thyroid phantom, for Planar, Tomo-AC and Tomo-NoAC images. Then Planar and SPECT/CT acquisitions centered on the thyroid were performed on 5 anthropomorphic phantoms with activity ranging from 0.4 to 10 MBq, and 23 patients after administration of 79.2 ± 3.7 MBq of [99mTc]-pertechnetate. We estimated the absolute thyroid activity (AThA) for the anthropomorphic phantoms and the TU for the patients. Radiation dose was also determined using International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) reports and VirtualDoseTMCT software. The nitrogenated holey Graphene (C2N) based solar cell has been modeled and analyzed by using SCAPS-1D. Initially, a reported structure (TCO/IGZO/C2N) has been considered and improved by incorporating Al and Pt as front and back contact, respectively. Then, a novel device structure (Al/TCO/IGZO/C2N/CZT/Pt) has been proposed by inserting a BSF layer with heavily doped p-CZT material. The outcomes of the suggested cell structure have been analyzed numerically by changing different physical parameters. The absorber and BSF layer's thickness has been optimized as 0.6 μm and 0.4 μm, respectively. The cell performance is significantly declined when the bulk defect density in C2N exceeds the value of 1015 cm−3. The rising of device operating temperature shows a negative effect on performance. From this analysis, the structure has been optimized according to device performance. The optimized results have been achieved with the VOC, JSC, FF and efficiency (eta) of 1.40 V, 22.59 mA/cm2, 89.02%, and 28.16%, respectively. This research contributes to enriching the knowledge on the field of C2N materials and its use in optoelectronic applications.

Abstract Background The aims of this study were to establish a normal database (NDB) for semiquantification of dopamine transporter (DAT) single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with [123I]FP-CIT on a cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) camera, test the preexisting NaI-derived NDB for use in CZT scans, and compare the diagnostic findings in subjects imaged with a CZT scanner with either the preexisting NaI-based NDB or our newly defined CZT NDB. Methods The sample comprised 73 subjects with clinically uncertain parkinsonian syndrome (PS) who prospectively underwent [123I]FP-CIT SPECT on a CZT camera according to standard guidelines with identical acquisition and reconstruction protocols (DaTQUANT). Two experienced readers visually assessed the images and binarized the subjects into “non-neurodegenerative PS” and “neurodegenerative PS”. Twenty-five subjects from the “non-neurodegenerative PS” subgroup were randomly selected to establish a CZT NDB. The remaining 48 subjects were defined as “test group”. DaTQUANT was used to determine the specific binding ratio (SBR). For the test group, SBR values were transformed to z-scores for the putamen utilizing both the CZT NDB and the manufacturer-provided NaI-based NDB (GE NDB). A predefined fixed cut-off of -2 was used for dichotomization of z-scores to classify neurodegenerative and non-neurodegenerative PS. Performance of semiquantification using the two NDB to identify subjects with neurodegenerative PS was assessed in comparison with the visual rating. Furthermore, a randomized head-to-head comparison of both detector systems was performed semiquantitatively in a subset of 32 out of all 73 subjects. Results Compared to the visual rating as reference, semiquantification based on the dedicated CZT NDB led to fewer discordant ratings than the GE NDB in CZT scans (3 vs. 8 out of 48 subjects). This can be attributed to the putaminal z-scores being consistently higher with the GE NDB on a CZT camera (median absolute difference of 1.68), suggesting an optimal cut-off of -0.5 for the GE NDB instead of -2.0. Average binding ratios and z-scores were significantly lower in CZT compared to NaI data. Conclusions Use of a dedicated, CZT-derived NDB is recommended in [123I]FP-CIT SPECT with a CZT camera since it improves agreement between semiquantification and visual assessment.

Comparisons between TU based on different pairs of images (Planar vs Tomo-AC, Planar vs Tomo-NoAC and Tomo-AC vs Tomo-NoAC) showed statistically significant correlation (r = 0.972, 0.961 and 0.935, respectively; P < 10–3). Effective and thyroid absorbed doses were, respectively (0.34CT + 0.95NM) mSv, and (3.88CT + 1.74NM) mGy. Conclusion: AThA estimation using Planar and SPECT/CT acquisitions on a new generation of CZT large-field cameras is feasible. In addition, TU on SPECT/CT was as accurate as conventional planar acquisition, but the CT induced additional thyroid exposure. Background: Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is an imaging modality that has demonstrated its utility in a number of clinical indications. Despite this progress, a high sensitivity, high spatial resolution, multi‐tracer SPECT with a large field of view suitable for whole‐body imaging of a broad range of radiotracers for theranostics is not available. Purpose: With the goal of filling this technological gap, we have designed a cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) full‐ring SPECT scanner instrumented with a broad‐energy tungsten collimator. The final purpose is to provide a multi‐tracer solution for brain and whole‐body imaging. Our static SPECT does not rely on the dual‐ and the triple‐head rotational SPECT standard paradigm, enabling a larger effective area in each scan to increase the sensitivity. We provide a demonstration of the performance of our design using a realistic model of our detector with simulated body‐sized phantoms filled with 99mTc and 177Lu. Methods: We create a realistic model of our detector by using a combination of a Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission (GATE) Monte Carlo simulation and a finite element model for the CZT response, accounting for low‐energy tail effects in CZT that affects the sensitivity and the scatter correction. We implement a modified dual‐energy‐window scatter correction adapted for CZT. Other corrections for attenuation, detector and collimator response, and detector gaps and edges are also included. The images are reconstructed using the maximum‐likelihood expectation‐maximization. Detector and reconstruction performance are characterized with point sources, Derenzo phantoms, and a body‐sized National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) Image Quality (IQ) phantom for both 99mTc and 177Lu. Results: Our SPECT design can resolve 7.9 mm rods for 99mTc (140 keV) and 9.5 mm for 177Lu (208 keV) in a hot‐rod Derenzo phantom with a 3‐min exposure and reach an image contrast of 78% for 99mTc and 57% for 177Lu using the NEMA IQ phantom with a 6‐min exposure. Our modified scatter correction shows an improved contrast‐recovery ratio compared to a standard correction. Conclusions: In this paper, we demonstrate the good performance of our design for whole‐body imaging purposes. This adds to our previous demonstration of improved qualitative and quantitative 99mTc imaging of brain perfusion and 123I imaging of dopamine transport with respect to state‐of‐the‐art NaI dual‐head cameras. We show that our design provides similar IQ and contrast to the commercial full‐ring SPECT VERITON for 99mTc. Regarding 177Lu imaging of the 208 keV emissions, our design provides similar contrast to that of other state‐of‐the‐art SPECTs with a significant reduction in exposure. The high sensitivity and extended energy range up to 250 keV makes our SPECT design a promising alternative for clinical imaging and theranostics of emerging radionuclides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Improving 511 keV photon detection sensitivity is a common goal for positron emission tomography system designers. One attractive approach to increase sensitivity is recovering events that are normally rejected. The kinematics of Compton scattering can be used to recover the line of response through direction difference angle (DDA). The uncertainty of DDA is determined by the energy and spatial resolution of a system. In this work, we evaluated the performance of small animal CZT-based positron emission tomography systems with energy resolution of 1%, 4%, and 6% and different spatial resolution based on prior work for guiding new design efforts. Designs with energy resolution limited by counting statistics and by electronic noise were considered. The influence of modifying the conventional energy window and uncertainty of DDA was investigated. For a system with 4% energy resolution and limited by electronic noise, the figure of merit of noise equivalent count increases by 65% as the lower energy bound increases from 471 keV to 493 keV. If the system-wide energy resolution becomes worse than 4% of the full width half maximum at 511 keV, going to a pixel size finer than 1 mm has very limited effect in reducing total angular uncertainty. For a system with 1% energy resolution, as the spatial resolution improves from 1 mm to 0.5 mm, the contrast-to-noise ratio increases by 9%.

Millimeter wave (mm-Wave) radar has been widely employed for non-contact vital sign detection. This research proposes a novel processing scheme to improve the accuracy and stability of non-contact heart rate detection. Firstly, we propose an adaptive range bin selection method based on variance which can select accurate range bins containing phase information of vital signs. Secondly, the smooth spline is utilized to fit the original phase signal to obtain a relatively pure template signal. Subsequently, the pure template signal is used as the input signal for the matched filter to convolve with the phase signal. The matched filtering can eliminate interference and noise such as breathing and random body movements (RBM). Next, the heartbeat signal is extracted by the Variable Mode Extraction (VME) algorithm. Finally, a novel frequency measurement technique named as Double-Chirp Z-Transform (Double-CZT) is proposed. The frequency of the heartbeat signal is measured by the Double-CZT. Compared with the traditional frequency measurement techniques, the Double-CZT improves the accuracy of frequency measurement and allows for more accurate heart rate measurements. Many subjects were invited to participate in the experiment, and the mean absolute error (MAE) of heart rate was less than 1 beat per minute (bpm) on average. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of heartbeat signal and provide accurate heart rate estimation.

Abstract Background We evaluated the effects of acquisition time, energy window width, and matrix size on the image quality, quantitation, and diagnostic performance of whole-body 99mTc-HMDP SPECT/CT in the primary metastasis staging of prostate cancer. Methods Thirty prostate cancer patients underwent 99mTc-HMDP SPECT/CT from the top of the head to the mid-thigh using a Discovery NM/CT 670 CZT system with list-mode acquisition, 50-min acquisition time, 15% energy window width, and 128 × 128 matrix size. The acquired list-mode data were resampled to produce data sets with shorter acquisition times of 41, 38, 32, 26, 20, and 16 min, narrower energy windows of 10, 8, 6, and 4%, and a larger matrix size of 256 × 256. Images were qualitatively evaluated by three experienced nuclear medicine physicians and quantitatively evaluated by noise, lesion contrast and SUV measurements. Diagnostic performance was evaluated from the readings of two experienced nuclear medicine physicians in terms of patient-, region-, and lesion-level sensitivity and specificity. Results The originally acquired images had the best qualitative image quality and lowest noise. However, the acquisition time could be reduced to 38 min, the energy window narrowed to 8%, and the matrix size increased to 256 × 256 with still acceptable qualitative image quality. Lesion contrast and SUVs were not affected by changes in acquisition parameters. Acquisition time reduction had no effect on the diagnostic performance, as sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve were not significantly different between the 50-min and reduced acquisition time images. The average patient-level sensitivities of the two readers were 88, 92, 100, and 96% for the 50-, 32-, 26-, and 16-min images, respectively, and the corresponding specificities were 78, 84, 84, and 78%. The average region-level sensitivities of the two readers were 55, 58, 59, and 56% for the 50-, 32-, 26-, and 16-min images, respectively, and the corresponding specificities were 95, 98, 96, and 95%. The number of equivocal lesions tended to increase as the acquisition time decreased. Conclusion Whole-body 99mTc-HMDP SPECT/CT can be acquired using a general-purpose CZT system in less than 20 min without any loss in diagnostic performance in metastasis staging of high-risk prostate cancer patients.

This paper validates the use of a harmonic analysis algorithm on a microcontroller to perform measurements of non-stationary signals in the context of smart grids. The increasing presence of electronic devices such as inverters of distributed generators (DG), power converters of charging stations for electric vehicles, etc. can drain non-stationary currents during their operation. A classical fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm may not have sufficient spectral resolution for the evaluation of harmonics and inter-harmonics. Thus, in this paper, the implementation of a chirp-Z transform (CZT) algorithm is suggested, which has a spectral resolution independent from the observation window. The CZT is implemented on a low-cost commercial microcontroller, and the absolute error is evaluated with respect to the same algorithm implemented in the LabVIEW environment. The results of the tests show that the CZT implementation on a low-cost microcontroller allows for accurate measurement results, demonstrating the feasibility of reliable harmonic analysis measurements even in non-stationary conditions on smart grids. Background: The aims of this study were to establish a normal database (NDB) for semiquantification of dopamine transporter (DAT) single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with [123I]FP-CIT on a cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) camera, test the preexisting NaI-derived NDB for use in CZT scans, and compare the diagnostic findings in subjects imaged with a CZT scanner with either the preexisting NaI-based NDB or our newly defined CZT NDB. Methods: The sample comprised 73 subjects with clinically uncertain parkinsonian syndrome (PS) who prospectively underwent [123I]FP-CIT SPECT on a CZT camera according to standard guidelines with identical acquisition and reconstruction protocols (DaTQUANT). Two experienced readers visually assessed the images and binarized the subjects into "non-neurodegenerative PS" and "neurodegenerative PS". Twenty-five subjects from the "non-neurodegenerative PS" subgroup were randomly selected to establish a CZT NDB. The remaining 48 subjects were defined as "test group". DaTQUANT was used to determine the specific binding ratio (SBR). For the test group, SBR values were transformed to z-scores for the putamen utilizing both the CZT NDB and the manufacturer-provided NaI-based NDB (GE NDB). A predefined fixed cut-off of -2 was used for dichotomization of z-scores to classify neurodegenerative and non-neurodegenerative PS. Performance of semiquantification using the two NDB to identify subjects with neurodegenerative PS was assessed in comparison with the visual rating. Furthermore, a randomized head-to-head comparison of both detector systems was performed semiquantitatively in a subset of 32 out of all 73 subjects. Results: Compared to the visual rating as reference, semiquantification based on the dedicated CZT NDB led to fewer discordant ratings than the GE NDB in CZT scans (3 vs. 8 out of 48 subjects). This can be attributed to the putaminal z-scores being consistently higher with the GE NDB on a CZT camera (median absolute difference of 1.68), suggesting an optimal cut-off of -0.5 for the GE NDB instead of -2.0. Average binding ratios and z-scores were significantly lower in CZT compared to NaI data. Conclusions: Use of a dedicated, CZT-derived NDB is recommended in [123I]FP-CIT SPECT with a CZT camera since it improves agreement between semiquantification and visual assessment. CdZnTe (CZT) is a new type of compound semiconductor that has emerged in recent years. Compared to other semiconductor materials, it possesses an ideal bandgap, high density, and high electron mobility, rendering it an excellent room-temperature composite semiconductor material for X-ray and γ-ray detectors. Due to the exceptional performance of CZT material, detectors manufactured using it exhibit high energy resolution, spatial resolution, and detection efficiency. They also have the advantage of operating at room temperature. CZT array detectors, furthermore, demonstrate outstanding spatial detection and three-dimensional imaging capabilities. Researchers worldwide have conducted extensive studies on this subject. This paper, building upon this foundation, provides a comprehensive analysis of CZT crystals and CZT array detectors and summarizes existing research to offer valuable insights for envisioning new detector methodologies.

Radiation detectors based on Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) compounds are becoming popular solutions thanks to their high detection efficiency, room temperature operation, and to their reliability in compact detection systems for medical, astrophysical, or industrial applications. However, despite a huge effort to improve the technological process, CZT detectors' full potential has not been completely exploited when both high spatial and energy resolution are required by the application, especially at low energies (<10 keV), limiting their application in energy-resolved photon counting (ERPC) systems. This gap can also be attributed to the lack of dedicated front-end electronics which can bring out the best in terms of detector spectroscopic performances. In this work, we present the latest results achieved in terms of energy resolution using SIRIO, a fast low-noise charge sensitive amplifier, and a linear-array pixel detector, based on boron oxide encapsulated vertical Bridgman-grown B-VB CZT crystals. The detector features a 0.25-mm pitch, a 1-mm thickness and is operated at a −700-V bias voltage. An equivalent noise charge of 39.2 el. r.m.s. (corresponding to 412 eV FWHM) was measured on the test pulser at 32 ns peaking time, leading to a raw resolution of 1.3% (782 eV FWHM) on the 59 keV line at room temperature (+20 °C) using an uncollimated 241Am, largely improving the current state of the art for CZT-based detection systems at such short peaking times, and achieving an optimum resolution of 0.97% (576 eV FWHM) at 1 µs peaking time. The measured energy resolution at the 122 keV line and with 1 µs peaking time of a 57Co raw uncollimated spectrum is 0.96% (1.17 keV). These activities are in the framework of an Italian collaboration on the development of energy-resolved X-ray scanners for material recycling, medical applications, and non-destructive testing in the food industry. Cardiac PET-derived measurements of myocardial blood flow (MBF) and myocardial flow reserve (MFR) are proven robust indexes of the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD). They facilitate the diagnosis of diffuse epicardial and microvascular disease and are also of prognostic significance. However, low availability and high cost have limited their wide clinical implementation. Over the last 15 years, cadmium zinc telluride (CZT)-based detectors have been implemented into SPECT imaging devices. Myocardial perfusion scintigraphy can be performed faster and with less radiation exposure as compared with standard gamma cameras. Rapid dynamic SPECT studies with higher count rates can be performed. This technological breakthrough has renewed the interest in SPECT MBF assessment in patients with CAD. Currently, two cardiac-centered CZT gamma cameras are available commercially—Discovery NM530c and D-SPECT. They differ in parameters such as collimator design, number of detectors, sensitivity, spatial resolution and image reconstruction. A number of publications have focused on the feasibility of dynamic CZT SPECT and on the correlation with cardiac PET and invasive coronary angiography measurements of fractional flow reserve. Current study reviews the present status of MBF and MFR assessment with CZT SPECT. A new frequency-offset-estimation (FOE) method for dual-polarized quadrature duobinary modulation (DP-QDB), which is based on a combination of fast Fourier transform (FFT) and chirp z transform (CZT), is proposed. This method is investigated at 128 Gb/s in five-channel wavelength-division-multiplexing DP-QDB systems by simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed method can greatly promote FOE accuracy. When the proposed method with FFT and CZT points of 1024 is compared with the traditional unimproved method with FFT points of 2048, the former is 70% lower than the latter in FOE error in the case of basically the same computational complexity. Besides, two FOE implementation schemes for DP-QDB are compared. It is found that the implementation scheme in which the FOE module is put after the post filter has better estimation performance. Abstract Background Semiconductor gamma-camera systems based on cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detectors present new challenges due to an energy-response that includes effects of low-energy tailing. In particular, such energy tails produce effects that need to be considered when imaging radionuclides with multiple emissions such as $$^{177}{\mathrm {Lu}}$$ 177 Lu . Monte Carlo simulation can be used to investigate the behaviour of such systems and optimise their use, provided that the detector model closely reflects the real physical detector. The aim of this work is to develop a CZT model applicable for simulation of CZT-based gamma cameras. Methods The equations describing the charge transport and signal induction are considered in three dimensions and are solved numerically, and the CZT model is then realised by coupling the detector-response to the photon-transport handled by the SIMIND Monte Carlo program. The CZT model is tuned to reproduce experimentally measured energy spectra of a hand-held gamma camera system for multiple radionuclides ( $$^{99\mathrm {m}}{\mathrm {Tc}}$$ 99 m Tc , $$^{123}{\mathrm {I}}$$ 123 I and $$^{177}{\mathrm {Lu}}$$ 177 Lu ) and parallel-hole collimators (MEGP, LEHR) as well as an uncollimated system. Results Overall, the model results agree well with measurements across the range of experimental conditions. The applicability of the model is demonstrated by separating energy spectra into components to investigate the interference of high-energy photons on lower energy-windows, where pronounced effects of low-energy tailing for $$^{177}{\mathrm {Lu}}$$ 177 Lu are observed. Conclusions The developed model provides understanding of the specifics of the camera response and is expected to be helpful for future optimisation of gamma camera applications.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) application in road surface detection has been greatly developed in the past few decades, which enables rapid and economical estimation of pavement thickness and other physical properties in non-destructive testing (NDT) and non-contact testing (NCT). In recent years, with the rapid development of microwave and millimeter-wave solid-state devices and digital signal processors, the cost of Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave (FMCW) radar has dropped significantly, with smaller size and lighter weight. Thereafter, FMCW GPR is considered to be applied during pavement inspection. To improve the precision of FMCW GPR for NDT and NCT of pavement thickness, a Chirp Z-transform (CZT) algorithm is introduced to FMCW GPR and investigated in this paper. A FMCW + CZT GPR at 2.5 GHz with a bandwidth of 1 GHz was built, and laboratory and field experiments were carried out. The experimental results demonstrate that the FMCW + CZT GPR radar can obtain the sample thickness with low error and recognize subtle thickness variations. This method realizes the high precision thickness measurement of shallow asphalt pavement by FMCW radar with a narrow bandwidth pulse signal and would provide a promising low-cost measurement solution for GPR. Deep space exploration navigation requires high accuracy of the Doppler measurement, which is equivalent to a frequency estimation problem. Because of the fence effect and spectrum leakage, the frequency estimation performances, which is based on the FFT spectrum methods, are significantly affected by the signal frequency. In this paper, we propose a novel method that utilizes the mathematical relation of the three Chirp-Z Transform (CZT) coefficients around the peak spectral line. The realization, unbiased performance, and algorithm parameter setting rule of the proposed method are described and analyzed in detail. The Monte Carlo simulation results show that the proposed method has a better anti-noise and unbiased performance compared with some traditional estimator methods. Furthermore, the proposed method is utilized to process the raw data of MEX and Tianwen-1 satellites received by Chinese Deep Space Stations (CDSS). The results show that the Doppler estimation accuracy of MEX and Tianwen-1 are both about 3 millihertz (mHz) in 1-s integration, which is consistent with that of ESA/EVN/CDSN and a little better than that of the Chinese VLBI network (CVN). Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)-grown HgCdTe on CdZnTe substrates produced the best performing infrared focal plane arrays for both terrestrial and space-based applications. Current practice is limited to growing one HgCdTe wafer per MBE run for substrate sizes ≥ 5 cm × 5 cm. This paper describes the successful implementation of multi-wafer growth on four 6 cm × 6 cm CdZnTe substrates simultaneously, using cost-effective and innovative processes. To demonstrate the efficacy of the process, a relatively hard-to-grow layer structure, namely a LWIR/LWIR dual-band layer structure, was chosen. Growth conditions were optimized using HgCdTe on an 8-inch (c. 20-cm) Si process to achieve a phenomenal HgCdTe cutoff and thickness uniformity of 1.2% and 1.8%, respectively. The results indicate a 4-fold increase in wafer yield while maintaining the values of key characteristics, such as macro-defect density, cutoff wavelength, and thickness, the same as those of single-wafer growth.
