2022 opened with World War C, the first major cyber world war. Wanting to capitalize on history in the making, Information Systems faculty are integrating real time events to increase student engagement, comprehension, and application of IS concepts. This paper outlines a successful midterm evaluation pivot that leverages current events. We discuss two different actions taken and objectives, outcomes, and implications for teaching and educational research. We find that incorporating extreme current events motivates students towards self-learning and creative knowledge outlets, which in turn stimulate greater comprehension, application, and retention across the entire class.

There is a significant skill gap, with millions of cybersecurity jobs still needing to be fulfilled due to a lack of a trained workforce. Various academic programs are available that teach students in different aspects of cybersecurity. This paper investigates if the title of an IT program has any impact on the desirability of a program and if this impact differs based on gender, with a focus on cybersecurity majors. Two focus groups were conducted for data collection at two different universities, and participants were asked to rank order a variety of titles for cybersecurity programs. An interpretive thematic analysis technique was used to analyze the data. Our results suggest that cybersecurity is a preferred title for both men and women. Recommendations are provided, and implications are drawn.

This research measures the role of psycho-cybernetics training (PT), green entrepreneurship training (GET), and green entrepreneurship motivation (GEM) in determining GEI. Going even deeper, GEM was also tested for its mediating role on the influence of PT and GET in determining GEI. This study adopts an ex-post facto design that focuses on the condition of students after green entrepreneurship training and psycho-cybernetics reinforcement. A total of 294 university students in Indonesia were involved to fill out the questionnaire voluntarily. A Likert-scale questionnaire instrument whose items have been validated is used to collect data. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis is used to test the hypothesis of direct influence between variables and mediating roles through path analysis and bootstrap methods. The results of the direct effect test stated that PT and GET play a significant role in determining GEM, and PT, GET and GEM also play a significant role in determining GEI. The mediating role of GEM has also been tested to be significant in the influence of PT and GET in determining GEI. These results provide a big signal that in creating various green innovations in entrepreneurship, two aspects (technical skills and psychological conditions) are needed which are well synergized.

The research utilized the descriptive survey model, a quantitative research method, with a study group consisting of 172 social studies teacher candidates (131 females, 41 males). As data collection tools in the study, the Cyberculture Adoption/Development Level Scale developed by Koçak (2019) and the global citizenship scale (Global Citizenship Scale--GCS) developed by Morais and Ogden in 2010 were used. The Turkish adaptation, validity, and reliability study of the global citizenship scale was conducted by Tutkun (2019). In addition, a personal information form prepared by the researcher was used. The data analysis involved the use of the Independent Samples t-test, to determine the relationship between participants' scores on the cyber culture adoption level scale and the global citizenship level scale concerning the gender variable. For situations where differentiation was observed based on class, social media usage purpose and internet usage frequency, the One-Way ANOVA was employed for unrelated Samples. The findings of the research indicate that there is no statistically significant difference in the levels of cyberculture adoption and global citizenship among teacher candidates concerning gender and class variables. When examining the variable of social media usage purpose, a statistically significant difference is observed in the global citizenship levels of teacher candidates. In contrast, no statistically significant difference is found in the levels of cyberculture adoption. Regarding the daily internet usage duration variable, no impact is observed on the global citizenship levels of teacher candidates. In contrast, a statistically significant difference is found in the levels of cyberculture adoption.

The theoretical model presented in this study explores the transformational potential of a digital Community of Practice (dCoP) within higher education, focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) education. A dCoP serves as a virtual space for educators to exchange knowledge, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and construct meaning through discourse. Through the use of digital artifacts, a dCoP provides tangible exemplars for intersecting abstract concepts to real-world applications, thus strengthening educational experiences and outcomes. This study emphasizes the cognitive, social, and emotional skills developed through STEAM education, projecting future career growth for learners in these areas. Establishing a dCoP for teachers in higher education facilitates the transfer of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary skills to students, supporting STEAM learning and future career opportunities. Additionally, this study employs portraiture and autoethnography methodology for storytelling and cybernetic learning. The incorporation of a cybernetic mindset, presented through a theoretical Cybernetic Three-Realm Model, enriches a dCoP by addressing (1) a Canvas for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), (2) an Artist's Palette for Authentic Artifacts, and (3) The Paints of Modalities for Learning. This theoretical construct affords a tangible framework for fostering STEAM skills and nurturing leadership development for pervasive learning within higher education dCoPs.

If psychometrics has long concerned itself with validity, reliability, and fairness, then what could psychometrics learn from the cybernetic theories of AI? Through engagement with Burstein's (2023) Responsible AI Standards, this paper unpacks some paradigmatic differences between psychometrics and cybernetics, points to how recursivity and contingency are both a challenge and opportunity for psychometrics, and how this matters epistemologically, ethically and politically. Following these epistemological differences, the paper raises ethico-political concerns with the promise of the "human-in-the-loop".

Although conversation openings and closings are ritualized speech acts (House & Kádár, 2023), they do require interactional work (Schegloff, 1986). Thus, they are important elements of interactional competence (Roever, 2022) and have been studied extensively in L2 interactions, including various types of technology-mediated communication contexts (e.g., Abe & Roever, 2019; 2020). However, to our knowledge, no research on openings and closings has been conducted with newer technologies such as spoken dialogue systems (SDS). To address this gap, this study compares conversation openings and closings across two modalities: a role-play with a human interlocutor versus with a fully automated agent. We analyzed interactional data from 47 tertiary-level learners of English. A quantitative (e.g., number of turns) and a qualitative, discursive analysis rendered several key findings: 1) learners were more transactionally oriented in SDS modality, but tended to engage in relational discourse with a human interlocutor; 2) humans adapted to the emergent discourse in both modalities; 3) despite training, the human interlocutor was inconsistent in displaying transactional versus interactional patterns with different participants, while the SDS followed the same dialogue structure in each interaction. Findings will be discussed in terms of specific affordances of the two modalities for interactional competence.

This article offers a historical inquiry into behaviorism and its impact on standard of judgement concerning education policies. Drawing from Aldous Huxley's reservation towards behaviorism as a scientific movement that naturalizes the role of control in human affairs, the paper maps the impact of behaviorism on economics of education. By tracing the influence of behaviorism in both rational (human capital theory) and quasi-rational (behavioral insight) economics, we draw attention to the activity of knowledge-making that describes and prescribes agency. The paper demonstrates how policy instruments and outcomes are intimately linked to assumptions about personhood, and in the case of behavioral insight, they contribute to the scope of decision-making entrusted to government and business. Utilizing a genealogical approach, the paper invites ethical reflections on the long-term implications of behavioral economics in light of automation.

There is no denying that the influence and use of technology in relation to teaching and learning increased significantly during the Co-Vid-19 periods of isolation and lockdown. The screen became the classroom; the teacher (and the students), rendered as apparitions of virtuality. Nevertheless, despite the barriers of distance and screen, there remained (and indeed remains) something distinctly human about these interactions. What if the teacher on the screen -- and, indeed, in the classroom -- was not human? Remotely controlled robotic teachers have been trialled in China, with positive feedback from students; yet teaching remains a profession that has been deemed at low risk of automation. This paper will consider Isaac Asimov's three laws of robotics as a foundational base for predicting the behaviour of a potential, autonomous, robot teacher; comparing the predictions in relation to behaviours deemed as necessary for the successful practice of teaching. To do this, the paper will set out the three hypothetical scenarios, in order to explore -- and hopefully determine -- whether a 'robot' could effectively carry out key teaching activities. The speculative responses to these questions will hopefully inspire further discussion and discourse.

The way in which informal learning in a Personal Learning Environment (PLE) is coordinated is poorly understood. Conversation -- with teachers, friends or family -- contributes to the processes involved in meaningfully negotiating resources. While institution-centric education creates contexts for conversations and codifies educational attainment, the institution cannot directly codify personal understanding. Through analysing patterns of personal construct-making we visualise the emergence of personal understanding, showing how this might be codified by the person, not the institution. A transdisciplinary module designed to produce personalised learning is studied. This module features dialogical activities coupled with a comparative judgement technique where learners repeatedly compared pairs of documents over time saying which they found more interesting. We visualise this data showing how it is possible to track "constructs" as patterns which emerge as learners express their judgements over time. Our analytical technique draws on the biological and mathematical theory of "anticipatory systems" alongside Kelly's Personal Construct Theory. Drawing on Kelly, we argue that meaning is attributable to patterns of anticipation. These patterns are discerned through identifying shifts in information entropy in engagement with the software alongside analysis of learner reflections over time. These demonstrate both patterns of development and differentiation among learners.

When the Learning Sciences emerged in 1991, there was an ethos of studying learning in humans and machines in conjunction with one another. This ethos reflected three decades of prior work on the interdisciplinary study of learning; however, in the three decades since the emergence of the Learning Sciences, it seems to have largely disappeared. I begin by describing the ethos that was prevalent in 1991 using quotations from the inaugural editorial of the "Journal of the Learning Sciences." I then describe how this ethos was prevalent decades before the Learning Sciences in four distinct approaches to cognitive science research, which I call the "Four C's"--cognitivism, constructivism, cybernetics, and connectionism. I suggest three reasons why the Learning Sciences moved away from the use of artificial intelligence as a central tool for thinking about learning, noting that these reasons do not suggest a fundamental incompatibility between the two. I end by discussing how Learning Scientists might once again embrace artificial intelligence and computational modeling and use them as tools for gaining insight into the constructivist, situated, and socio-cultural nature of learning.

This paper investigates how psychological needs spurring self-determined motivation relate to collective efficacy for flourishing in online learning communities. Self-determination theory posits individuals experience intrinsic motivation to flourish at educational tasks because of targeted satisfaction of the three psychological needs: autonomy, relatedness, and competence. However, studies conducted to investigate collective, technology-assisted learning processes suggest competence and relatedness may play a pivotal role in online community engagement and knowledge-sharing. Moreover, informal gaming experiences may mirror the collaborative skills needed in online educational/professional communities. These insights suggest confidence in one's abilities to contribute to a community, the perception of a strong, supportive social culture in the online classroom, and informal online experiences may lead to self-determined motivation enabling agents in distributed, technology-assisted classrooms to collectively flourish. Little work has been done to examine effects of need satisfaction on collective efficacy in using online technologies. To fill this research gap, we used structural equation modelling to investigate perceptions of 636 undergraduate students enrolled in classes within an education department at a midwestern university employing weekly asynchronous blogging. Our results suggest students' experience with multiplayer gaming, and need satisfaction towards competence and relatedness correlate with higher collective efficacy in technology-assisted classrooms employing discussion forums.

A co-lab in Cyborg Arts was conducted at Parsons/New School University, a leading design school in New York City, over the course of sixteen weeks. This paper discusses the use of Bruno Latour's Actor Network Theory (ANT) (Latour, 2007) in facilitating creative collaboration solutions. Previously, an open call had been placed in targeted venues such as Art and Education, as well as a number of technology user groups in the New York City area to solicit ideas and participants. With the assistance of the Cyborg Foundation three teams were chosen to build prototypes of a new cyborg sense: Team Glass, Team Radiation, and Team Haptics. Team Glass strove to make a cyborg sense detecting the rhythm of changes in the sun's solar flares. Team Radiation made a sense that distinguished between, and alerted the user to different types of organic and inorganic radiation in the environment. Team Haptics used the team leader's own body as a site environment to correct a medical problem by developing a new cyborg sense. Students from Parsons chose which team to work with. Experts and guests either visited the co-lab in person, or used Skype to converse with the participants throughout the course of the semester. Registered Parsons students stayed committed to the lab in order to receive a grade. Other participants had various reasons to remain involved, such as learning new skills, seeing their ideas realized, or stepping outside of their core discipline. The major conduits of communication for the teams outside of lab time were the web-based Slack application that logged a history of their thoughts and interactions, as well as a private student Tumblr to document their progress. This paper discusses how an ANT analysis of practice based learning led to incremental breakthroughs such as starting, stopping, abandoning, and resuming developing these sensing techniques. This resulted in proof of concept artworks, and showcased new aspects of cyborg art.

Teacher agency is often depicted in terms of autonomy, empowerment, and participation. This article examines how those democratic visions of teacher agency are (re)constructed during the post-World War Two period when social scientists were eager to find organized procedural reasons. To explain this, I historicize the shifted teachers' role from a 'participant' to a 'participant observer' in action research. The analysis focuses on this shift of teachers' positionality as embodying cybernetics rationales, which conceptualized the role of the observer as the agency for systemic change and knowledge production. The findings show that teachers, who participate in action research as teacher-researchers, follow mechanically applicable rules (e.g., action-oriented methodological principles) while having freedom to select the targets of the inquiry. Whereas it has empowered teachers to have an autonomous sense of agency, the empirical, methodological, and procedural orientation in action research leaves teachers' agential roles to be bounded with the self-referencing process to believe what is seen, rather than to consider the empirical representations in relation to cultural, historical, and social conditions. The study provides alternative ways to critically examine an individual's participation in organizational systems and reforms, methodocentrism in education research, and the role of observation for knowledge production.

This article analyses how Heinz von Foerster's Biological Computer Laboratory (BCL) translated cybernetic concepts into an experimental pedagogy tailored to the interests of the youth of the American intellectual counterculture. The existing research literature assumes that the opening of BCL to the counterculture in the early 1970s was the result of a radical shift from first- to second-order cybernetic theory; in other words, the result of a new epistemological position. This article instead attempts to identify similarities between the design of cybernetic 'learning machines' in the early 1960s and Foerster's teaching methods that characterised BCL between 1968 and 1976. The article will show that Foerster's pedagogy was inspired by a specific style of thinking that can already be found in earlier cybernetic research practices. Concerning both the early and the late phase of the BCL, oral history sources, as well as original publications and archival material, were used.

The past decade has witnessed an explosion of the penetration of mobile technology through all strata of society. Mobile technologies including cell phones, tablets, and even some e-readers are used for surfing the web, running apps, reading email, posting to social media, conducting banking transactions, etc. This liberation from desktop and laptop machines and from the requirements of a specific geographic location raises concerns regarding the problems and challenges of maintaining security while traversing cyberspace. The purpose of this empirical study is to investigate the attitudes, behaviors, and security practices of business students using mobile devices to access online resources. One group of students surveyed received no specific training regarding mobile security while a second group was surveyed following the completion of an online training program. Results show no significant difference in the security practices of the two groups, indicating that commercially available security training programs are largely inefficacious with respect to modifying student behavior and that additional research on training efficacy is needed.

The science of artificial intelligence, or AI, is leaping ahead as more resources are focused on its promise. In this article, the authors discuss the ways in which we have explored significant, critical questions about AI in a college literature course through reading young adult (YA) novels. Although it's improving, AI or machine intelligence is not quite ready for prime time. Human communication is still difficult for machines, "chatbots," to understand. English teachers are well-positioned and perhaps ethically obligated to approach AI. Literature possesses the power to imagine a future and, in so doing, engage readers in questions of ethics in otherwise unthought-of scenarios. Through reading and critical discussion, English teachers offer students emotional and social questions, enabling them - teachers hope - to face their future dilemmas with intelligence, empathy, and autonomy. Using high-interest YA literature as primary texts for the class engaged the students in reading closely. And focusing on artificial intelligence enticed science-minded students to consider a topic that has been well-developed in literature over the past century. Choosing contemporary books written by authors who had researched AI also ensured that the science in the texts would be close to accurate.

Current distance education practices can be susceptible to the types of content-heavy, top-down instruction often seen in physical classrooms. These practices are similar to the activities of corporations, which use recommendation systems and game theory to mold the public sphere and fragment it. We propose that free knowledge creation through open, multichannel communication needs to be used in distance education to permit both individual and collective agency for students to process knowledge and develop higher order reflectivity. Such frameworks would help students of distance education and instructors to use critical thinking to discuss concepts as equal stakeholders and develop varied ideological outcomes that could contribute to creating social change. This conceptual paper places current distance education practices within Habermasian theory, discusses ways in which the Internet and its educative potential has come to be viewed thus far, and suggests platforms that could open distance learning to new possibilities.

In this comparative essay, the author discusses the opposing educational theories of John Dewey and Gregory Bateson. While Dewey believed that the scientific method was the dominant method of solving problems and thereby acquiring knowledge that mattered, Bateson warned that this one-sided approach would lead to actions that could destroy the environment. Bateson, alternatively, proposed the theory of cybernetics. In a memorandum explaining the issues, Bateson proposed the consideration of three cybernetic or self-governing systems: (1) individual humans; (2) human society; and (3) the ecosystem. This author contends that, although many people know of Dewey and Bateson, their ideas seem out of touch with contemporary concerns. A debate that took place during the 1990s illustrates that the question of whether people should apply the scientific method to social problems remains important. On the one side, C. A. Bowers claimed that people should determine the value of educational reforms by considering whether they reduced the ecological crisis. On the other hand, Peter McLaren argued that teachers should work to solve the problems of social inequality. This exchange illustrated that people disagree about whether social progress comes from people learning to solve problems. On the one hand, Dewey would contend that progress could arise from people learning to control the environment. On the other hand, Bateson warned that the world is more complicated than people realize. The connections among things could cause efforts to control something to destroy another. The ideas of Dewey and Bateson suggest an answer to the question whether schools should teach students to solve problems even though their thoughts extend beyond the scope of that issue. The Artistic and Humanistic studies (liberal studies) and the science and technology disciplines (science) constitute the two dominant cultures in a modern university. Subsumed in these cultures are the professional disciplines of law, architecture, engineering, medicine, accounting, administration and a few others. Essentially, the university idea emerged from the desire to integrate all academic cultures. However, an emerging trend of erecting a dichotomy between these cultures, is beginning to spin controversy, brew academic suspicion and slice off the integrative intentions of the university idea. The responsibility of liberal studies is to develop the academic disposition, to awaken human curiosity, inquisitiveness and creativity, by promoting human values and expressing the spirit of man. Science and technology culture is to leverage on the artistic and humanistic orientation to elevate our standard of practice, our ways of doing, to higher pedestals. This paper argues that neither the liberal orientation alone nor the scientific technological culture exclusively could guarantee the well being of humankind. While it is the responsibility of the humanities to elevate the individual to freedom, it is the obligation of science and technology education to catapult humanity to its proper comfort and happiness. While artistic-humanistic productions should more radically envision a world of mutual interdependence, of shared values, of reciprocal solidarity and a commitment to the aspirations of a common humanity, scientific-technological studies and proposals should demonstrate how outputs-outcomes are adverted to the promotion of human values and virtues, and how they assure the survival of the human race. This paper likens the emerging dichotomy between the two cultures to the dichotomy between mind and body, a dichotomy that developments in cybernetics and parapsychology appear to be grappling with. The two cultures have the obligation to develop the two parts of human nature. To develop one part to the detriment of the other is to demonstrate prejudice in examining the mind-body relationship and, by extension, to seek to abolish a vital part of our humanity.

The aim of this paper is to call attention to the missing discourse of non-humans as social actors in the Social Foundations of Education. The paper outlines three common figuring metaphors that impede the adoption of such a theoretical discourse and shows how Actor-Network Theory (ANT), more recently developed in the nascent field of Science and Technology Studies (STS), reframes sociological theory--and specifically, what it means to be a "social actor"--to allow for a more comprehensive accounting of the interactions of humans and nonhumans in the fabrication of the social. A corollary aim of the paper is to highlight the role of nonhumans in contemporary educational concerns. The paper also offers a range of different examples to illustrate its points. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief review of the various streams of constructivism in studies of education, society, science and technology. It is intended to present a number of answers to the question (what really is constructivism?) in the context of various disciplines from the humanities and the sciences (both natural and social). In particular the discussion will focus on four varieties of constructivism: philosophical, cybernetic, educational, and sociological constructivism.

Over the past decade, computer games and other interactive technologies have shown great potential when used in innovative ways to enhance learning. It is now known that learning is associated not only with cognitive ability but also with affect. The incorporation of affective embodied pedagogical agents (EPAs) in computer programs for learning can significantly influence learner beliefs and efficacy. However, there have been a number of criticisms and contradictory empirical findings calling into question earlier results and theoretical claims on the effectiveness of using EPAs. Therefore, this paper reviewed studies that evaluated the effectiveness of affect in EPAs in a computer-based learning environment (CLE). The statistical meta-analytic review (k = 30, n = 2,150) found that the use of affect in EPAs has a significant and moderate impact (r = 0?.35) on students' learning motivation and a relatively smaller impact on knowledge retention (r =?0.29) and knowledge transfer (r?= 0?.26). The effect sizes of the three outcome variables in this review are stronger compared with previous meta-analysis on the impact of the embodiment level of EPAs, indicating that the use of affect is more desirable and effective in CLEs. Finally, implications for both designers and researchers of using affective EPAs in CLEs are discussed.

This study examines how incorporating different electronic feedback devices (i.e., clickers versus web-based polling) may affect specific types of student engagement (i.e., behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement), whether students' self-efficacy for learning and performance may differ between courses that have integrated clickers and those that use web-based polling, and whether using web-based polling influences faculty members' instructional practices. The participants included six instructors and 209 students enrolled in classes at a university in the southwestern United States in which the instructors used either clickers or web-based polling. The Plenty-of-Time Teaching (PoTT) and the Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT) approaches and their implications are presented. The results of this study highlight the benefits of using various types of electronic feedback devices to provide innovative ways to implement JiTT or PoTT, such as gauging students' understanding with pre-class polls, and offer insights that can benefit educators who wish to promote students' emotional and cognitive engagement with various types of feedback devices.

Nowadays, the dissemination and exploitation of three-dimensional (3D) multi-user virtual worlds in higher education have been disclosed from their widespread acceptance as candidate learning platforms. However, it is still lacking a theoretical cybernetic macro-script to elaborate the coordination of multiple complex interactions among users' participation. The purpose of this study is to present and articulate a cybernetic macro-script focused on the systemic organisational structure replicated through the conjunction of cybernetic structures proposed by the viable system model (VSM) and the Jigsaw teaching technique to be amplified an exploratory-collaborative learning process, which may engage students in argumentative" knowledge construction." This approach may allow educators and scholars to handle efficiently the cyber entities' (avatars) in-world complex interactions through purposeful participatory learning tasks. A cybernetic macro-script held in Open Sim can be sufficiently established as valuable with insightful perspectives by surpassing irrefutable shortcomings for future-driven sustainable use and growth.

The Personal Learning Environment (PLE) has been presented in a number of guises over a period of 10 years as an intervention which seeks the reorganisation of educational technology through shifting the "locus of control" of technology towards the learner. In the intervening period to the present, a number of initiatives have attempted to create or instil the dispositions of technologically empowered personal learning, to varying levels of success, but none of which have been conclusive. At the same time, developments in education and learning technology have indicated some deficiencies in the models and rationale that was used to justify the PLE. In this paper, the cybernetic model of the PLE presented through the Joint Information Services Committee PLE project is re-inspected in the light of (a) evidence from implementation; (b) changes in technology infrastructure. A refined model is presented, enriching the cybernetic argument about the control of personal tools with Bowlby's related cybernetic model of attachment. The refined model is situated against the impact of the fast-emerging real-time web, and the approach justified with reference to a computer simulation of the dynamics of the new model.

This article is about developing school-based self-assessing recursive pedagogies and case/action research practices and/or approaches in schools, and teachers, teacher researchers and researchers simultaneously producing and theorising their own practices using second-order cybernetics as a thinking tool. It is a move towards pragmatic data-driven pedagogies and research and away from traditional hypothesis-driven activities.

Research on the use of software programs and tools such as pedagogical agents has peaked over the last decade. Pedagogical agents are on-screen characters that facilitate instruction. This meta-analysis examined the effect of using pedagogical agents on learning by reviewing 43 studies involving 3,088 participants. Analysis of the results indicated that pedagogical agents produced a small but significant effect on learning. The overall mean effect size was moderated by the contextual and methodological features of the studies. The findings revealed that the use of pedagogical agents were more beneficial for K-12 students than post-secondary students. Pedagogical agents that communicated with students using on-screen text facilitated learning more effectively than agents that communicated using narration. The findings of this study have implications for advancing theory and practice, as well as highlighting productive future directions for research.

Researchers claim that pedagogical agents engender opportunities for social learning in digital environments. Prior literature, however, has not thoroughly examined the discourse between agents and learners. To address this gap, we analyzed a data corpus of interactions between agents and learners using open coding methods. Analysis revealed that: (1) conversations between learners and agents included sporadic on-task interactions with limited follow-up; (2) conversations were often playful and lighthearted; (3) learners positioned agents in multiple instructional/social roles; (4) learners utilized numerous strategies for understanding agent responses; (5) learners were interested in agents' relationship status and love interests; and (6) learners asked personal questions to the agent but did not reciprocate to requests to talk about themselves.
