Abstract

International audience; Student-Question-Based Inquiry (SQBI) represents a form of inquiry where pupils design their research questions, hypotheses, and protocols. The Savanturiers program aims at helping teachers overcome their potential apprehension of SQBI by matching hundreds of elementary and middle school teachers with mentors. These mentors are usually researchers or Ph.D. candidates. This contribution aims at describing various tensions that arose during the mentorship of SQBI in this program through the lens of Engeström’s activity theory. Field observations and semi-structured interviews with a sample of teachers suggested that numerous obstacles hindered mentor-practitioner collaborations. We identified at least three mechanisms that contributed to the paucity of interactions that we interpreted as contradictions of the activity system: mentors sometimes suggested activities that fell outside of the boundaries of curricula or were too time-consuming for a given group of learners. Alternatively, pupils’ agency, notably in the phrasing of research questions, could lead them to explore topics or approaches for which the mentor had little expertise.

Abstract

This article focuses on discourses dealing with sport (political, institutional, Olympic, etc.) as well as discourses coming from sport experiences (forums, social networks and applications dedicated to sport), in order to question the values of Olympism and the way they are put into discourse and polarized. The corpus is composed of major institutional texts (mainly charters and codes). Its study is completed by the analysis of a second corpus comprising "posts" disseminated on sports forums and social networks as well as publications relating to the Strava community. We describe how the texts governing Olympism formulate an instituting topique, and how the meaning of values evolves through discursive actualisation, in contexts referring to the practice of amateur sport. In particular, we examine Respect, Friendship and Excellence (the three core values claimed by the Olympic movement) and their links with other values (peace between peoples, equality, solidarity, integrity). The discursive analysis in situ allows us to identify the reconfiguration of these fundamentals in the digital practices of amateurs, around fair play, performance, and more generally what is understood by "sport values"., Cet article s’intéresse aux discours traitant du sport (politique, institutionnel, olympique, etc.) ainsi qu’aux discours issus de pratiques sportives (forums, réseaux sociaux et applications dédiées au sport), afin de questionner les valeurs de l’Olympisme et la manière dont elles sont mises en discours et polarisées. Le corpus est composé de textes institutionnels majeurs (chartes et codes essentiellement). Son étude est complétée par l’analyse d’un second corpus comprenant des « posts » diffusés sur les forums et réseaux sociaux sportifs ainsi que des publications relatives à la communauté Strava. Nous décrivons comment les textes qui régissent l’Olympisme formulent une topique instituante, et comment le sens des valeurs évolue à travers l’actualisation discursive, dans des contextes renvoyant à la pratique du sport amateur. Nous interrogeons en particulier le Respect, l’Amitié et l’Excellence (les trois valeurs essentielles revendiquées par le mouvement olympisme) et leurs liens avec d’autres valeurs (la paix entre les peuples, l’égalité, la solidarité, l’intégrité). L'analyse discursive in situ permet de cerner les enjeux de la reconfiguration de ces fondamentaux dans les pratiques numériques des amateurs, autour du fair-play, de la performance, et plus généralement de ce qui est entendu par « valeurs du sport ».

Abstract

International audience; Dès les premières semaines de vie, les interactions sociales et affectives sont au cœur du développement cognitif chez le nouveau-né. Lev Vygotski, pédagogue et psychologue soviétique, a montré que le développement cognitif dépend des interactions sociales et que les parents sont des outils pour l’enfant afin de favoriser son développement. Les parents adaptent inconsciemment leurs comportements pour donner aux enfants les informations nécessaires pour développer et consolider des apprentissages et ainsi résoudre des problèmes concrets. Par exemple, les émotions transmises par l’adulte peuvent fournir des informations importantes pour comprendre l’arrêt ou le renforcement d’un comportement particulier chez l’enfant. Les études en psychologie soulignent que le développement des capacités émotionnelles est l’une des clés pour le développement des capacités cognitives. L’enfant cherche l’information émotionnelle chez un parent et l’utilise pour guider son comportement. Un signal de douleur induit une émotion négative et peut produire des réactions d’évitement alors qu’un signal de récompense produit une émotion positive et un comportement adéquat.Les émotions sont souvent transmises par l’expressivité faciale. Ainsi, les nouveau-nés de quelques semaines imitent les expressions faciales des adultes. Cela pose des questions fondamentales du point de vue du développement de la reconnaissance des expressions faciales. Si la capacité à imiter est innée, quels en sont les mécanismes sous-jacent ? Pourquoi le nouveau-né imite-t-il ? L’enfant voit les expressions du visage de ceux qui l’entourent mais pas sa propre expression. Pour Jean Piaget, biologiste et psychologue suisse, l’enfant doit acquérir la correspondance entre l’expression visible de l’autre et le mouvement invisible du « moi ». Comment peut-il faire pour se représenter l’invisible ? Comment peut-il associer ses propres actes qu’il ne voit pas avec les actes de l’autre qu’il peut voir ? Des chercheurs du laboratoire Equipes Traitement de l’Information et Systèmes (ETIS) de l’Université de Cergy-Pontoise ont tenté de répondre à ces questions en proposant des modèles computationnels incorporés sur un robot, où ce dernier est vu comme un outil d’investigation destiné à comprendre le développement et les mécanismes d’adaptation du jeune enfant. Le robot est considéré comme un nouveau-né qui possède peu d’a priori sur l’environnement extérieur, mais qui peut apprendre en interagissant avec ce dernier. Les architectures basées sur des réseaux de neurones incorporés dans le robot ont un double enjeu : questionner les modèles du développement humain ; et proposer des algorithmes permettant l’adaptation de robots autonomes. Dans ce travail, l’objectif est de comprendre à travers une modélisation neuronale comment le processus émotionnel provoque le développement de compétences cognitives et comment ce modèle permet au robot une meilleur adaptation dans un environnement réel.

Abstract

International audience; We propose a global framework for modeling the cortico-basal system (CX-BG) and the fronto-striatal system (PFC-BG) for the generation and recall of audio memory sequences; ie, sound perception and speech production. Our genuine model is based on the neural architecture called INFERNO standing for Iterative Free-Energy Optimization of Recurrent Neural Networks. Free-energy (FE) corresponds to the prediction error on internal or external noise. FE minimization is used for exploring, selecting and learning in PFC the optimal choices of actions to perform in the BG network (eg sound production) in order to reproduce and control the most accurately possible the spike trains representing sounds in CX. The difference between the two working memories relies in the neural coding itself, which is based on temporal ordering in the CX-BG networks (Spike Timing-Dependent Plasticity) and on the rank ordering in the sequence in the PFC-BG networks (gating or gain-modulation). We detail in this short paper the CX-BG system responsible to encode the audio primitives at few milliseconds order, and the PFC-BG system responsible for the learning of temporal structure in sequences. Two experiments done with a small and a big audio database show the capabilities of exploration, generalization and robustness to noise of the neural architecture to retrieve audio primitives as well as long-range sequences based on structure detection. Although both learning mechanisms are implemented with the same algorithm of rank-order coding, the CX-BG system realizes a model-free recurrent neural network (INFERNO) and the PFC-BG system implements a gated recurrent neural network (INFERNO GATE).

Abstract

International audience; This paper proposes an in-depth analysis of the tri-state inverter based digitally controlled oscillator. This oscillator topology has been reported in numerous publication, however its features remain poorly understood. In this study, we propose to focus on these lacks. We specifically addressed the oscillation period and the associated jitter as these quantities are the design key parameters. In this paper, we propose analytical expressions taking into consideration the design, the technology as well as the input code. These equations are suitable for hand calculations and have helped to establish a design methodology for rapid implementation. Two circuits have been designed in STMicroelectronics CMOS 65nm process. The first one was evaluated through simulations. Then, the measurement results obtained with the second circuit manufactured within the same technology node are presented. Finally, the experimental data support the proposed theory.

Abstract

In order to keep trace of information, the brain has to resolve the problem of where information is and how to index new ones. We propose that the neural mechanism used by the prefrontal cortex (PFC) to detect structure in temporal sequences, based on the temporal order of incoming information, has served as second purpose to the spatial ordering and indexing of brain networks. We call this process, apparent to the manipulation of neural 'addresses' to organize the brain's own network, the 'digitalization' of information. Such tool is important for information processing and preservation, but also for memory formation and retrieval.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to propose a new development of the fuel cell characterization tool based on Voltage Singularity Spectrum (VSS), a pattern that can advantageously be estimated from the "free" evolution of the stack voltage. A Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) designed to operate in micro Combined Heat and Power units is investigated to create an experimental database made of normal and abnormal operating conditions. Some VSS signatures based on Wavelet Leader Multifractal Analysis (WLMA) are computed on low- and high-frequency filtered stack voltage signals reflecting different physical phenomena dynamics. The resulting low- and high-frequency VSS computed for six different operating conditions are then compared to the Electrochemical Impedance Spectra (EIS) recorded in the same conditions. In this way, we intend to establish some links between the VSS patterns and the EIS based on well-known physical analyses. We also show that the dominant singularity strengths of the low (and possibly also high) frequency VSS can be considered as relevant clustering features to identify various PEMFC operating states (linked with poorer / better air diffusion, with lower / higher MEA hydration), as it is usually done with the use of the characteristic resistances intercepted on the EIS graph x-axis.

Abstract

Background and study aims Colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) does not possess an objective and reliable scoring system to assess the quality of visualization of the colon mucosa. The aim of this study was to establish a colonic computed assessment of cleansing (CAC) score able to discriminate “adequately cleansed” from “inadequately cleansed” CCE still frames. Patients and methods Twelve normal and complete CCEs, using the Pillcam Colon 2 system (Medtronic, Minnesota, United States), were prospectively selected amongst a database. A CAC score, defined as the ratio of color intensities red over green (R/G ratio), and red over brown (R/(R + G) ratio) was calculated for each extracted colonic frame. After sorting and random selection, two sets of still frames representative of the range of these ratios were obtained. These images were analyzed twice in random order by two experienced CCE readers who were blinded to the CAC scores. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was forged for both types of ratios and a threshold established, yielding the highest diagnostic performance in terms of adequate cleansing assessment. Results Four-hundred-and-eight frames were extracted. Regarding the R/G ratio, a threshold value of 1.55 was calculated, with a sensitivity of 86.5 % and a specificity of 77.7 %. Regarding the R/(R + G) ratio, a threshold value of 0.58 was calculated with a sensitivity of 95.5 % and a specificity of 62.9 %. Conclusion The two proposed CAC scores based on the ratio of color intensities come with high sensitivities for discriminating between “adequately cleansed” and “inadequately cleansed” CCE still frames, but they lack specificity. Further refinement, with implementation of additional image parameters, is warranted.

Abstract

Probabilistic gradient descent bit-flipping (PGDBF) is a hard-decision decoder for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, which offers a significant improvement in error correction, approaching the performance of soft-information decoders on the binary symmetric channel. However, this outstanding performance is known to come with an augmentation of the decoder complexity, compared to the non-probabilistic gradient descent bit flipping (GDBF), becoming a drawback of this decoder. This paper presents a new approach to implementing PGDBF decoding for quasi-cyclic LDPC (QC-LDPC) codes, based on the so-called variable-node-shift architecture (VNSA). In VNSA-based PGDBF implementations, the regularity of QC-LDPC connection networks is used to cyclically shift the memory of the decoder, leading to the fact that, a variable node (VN) is processed by different computing units during the decoding process. With this modification, the probabilistic effects in VN operations can be produced by implementing different types of processing units, without requirement of a probabilistic signal generator. The VNSA is shown to further improve the decoding performance of the PGDBF, with respect to other hardware implementations reported in the literature, while reducing the complexity below that of the GDBF. The efficiency of the VNSA is proven by ASIC synthesis results and by decoding simulations.

Abstract

We propose a unified framework for modeling the cortico-basal system (CX-BG) and the fronto-striatal system (PFC-BG) for the generation and recall of audio memory sequences; ie, sound perception and speech production. Our genuine model is based on the neural architecture called INFERNO standing for Iterative Free-Energy Optimization of Recurrent Neural Networks. Free-energy (noise) minimization is used for exploring, selecting and learning in PFC the optimal choices of actions to perform in the BG network (eg sound production) in order to reproduce and control the most accurately possible the spike trains representing sounds in CX. The difference between the two working memories relies in the neural coding itself, which is based on temporal ordering in the CX-BG networks (Spike Timing-Dependent Plasticity) and on the rank ordering in the sequence in the PFC-BG networks (gating or gain-modulation). We detail in this paper only the CX-BG system responsible to encode the audio primitives at few milliseconds order, while the PFC-BG system responsible for the learning of temporal structure in sequences will be presented in a complementary paper. Two experiments done with a small and a big audio database show the capabilities of exploration, generalization and robustness to noise of the neural architecture to retrieve audio primitives.

Abstract

International audience; RDF Graph Summarization pertains to the process of extracting concise but meaningful summaries from RDF Knowledge Bases (KBs) representing as close as possible the actual contents of the KB both in terms of structure and data. RDF Sum-marization allows for better exploration and visualization of the underlying RDF graphs, optimization of queries or query evaluation in multiple steps, better understanding of connections in Linked Datasets and many other applications. In the literature, there are efforts reported presenting algorithms for extracting summaries from RDF KBs. These efforts though provide different results while applied on the same KB, thus a way to compare the produced summaries and decide on their quality and best-fitness for specific tasks, in the form of a quality framework, is necessary. So in this work, we propose a comprehensive Quality Framework for RDF Graph Summarization that would allow a better, deeper and more complete understanding of the quality of the different summaries and facilitate their comparison. We work at two levels: the level of the ideal summary of the KB that could be provided by an expert user and the level of the instances contained by the KB. For the first level, we are computing how close the proposed summary is to the ideal solution (when this is available) by defining and computing its precision, recall and F-measure against the ideal solution. For the second level, we are computing if the existing instances are covered (i.e. can be retrieved) and in what degree by the proposed summary. Again we define and compute its precision, recall and F-measure against the data contained in the original KB. We also compute the connectivity of the proposed summary compared to the ideal one, since in many cases (like, e.g., when we want to query) this is an important factor and in general in RDF, datasets that are linked within are usually used. We use our quality framework to test the results of three of the best RDF Graph Summarization algorithms, when summarizing different (in terms of content) and diverse (in terms of total size and number of instances, classes and predicates) KBs and we present comparative results for them. We conclude this work by discussing these results and the suitability of the proposed quality framework in order to get useful insights for the quality of the presented results.

From this representation, the agglomerative hierarchical clustering algorithm is used to produce music genre taxonomies. Experiments are realized on the GTZAN dataset for performances evaluation. A second evaluation on GTZAN augmented by Afro genres has been made. The results show that the hierarchical classifiers obtained with the proposed taxonomies reach accuracies of 91.6 % (more than 7 % higher than the performances of the existing hierarchical classifiers).

Abstract

International audience; This paper deals with Principal Components Analysis (PCA) of data spread over a network where central coordination and synchronous communication between networking nodes are forbidden. We propose an asynchronous and decentralized PCA algorithm dedicated to large scale problems, where " large " simultaneously applies to dimensionality, number of observations and network size. It is based on the integration of a dimension reduction step into a Gossip consensus protocol. Unlike other approaches, a straightforward dual formulation makes it suitable when observed dimensions are distributed. We theoretically show its equivalence with a centralized PCA under a low-rank assumption on training data. An experimental analysis reveals that it achieves a good accuracy with a reasonable communication cost even when the low-rank assumption is relaxed.

Abstract

International audience; Intelligent tutoring systems are increasingly effective for helping the teacher's work with children. However, these technologies are still poorly used for cognitively impaired infants who display autistic spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities as they don't adapt easily to each infant. We propose an adaptive learning system called SPEAKY for assisting the learning of lexicon to children with the help of the tutor. SPEAKY present a pair of images and questions of gradual difficulty to each infant and adapt the set of images and questions with respect to the child response. Depending on how their tutors scored the child's response, SPEAKY modifies its model of the learner. We proposed an approach based on the reinforcement learning in order to adapt exercises' difficulty to the level and profile of one infant. Our database contains more than 300 images and we have asked more than 2000 questions in three weeks considering all the exercise sessions. The results confirmed that generalization is not possible and that adaptiveness is important as we found that difficulty is child-specific. Through the results we gathered, we also determine the difficulties and facilities points of each child.

Abstract

In this work, we present a unified multimodal neural network for pose estimation from RGB images and action recognition from video sequences. We show that a multimodal approach benefits 3D pose estimation by mixing high precision 3D data and “in the wild” 2D annotated images, while action recognition also benefits from better visual features. Furthermore, we demonstrate by our experiments that end-to-end optimization results in better performance for action recognition than separated learning. We reported state-of-the-art results on 3D pose estimation and action recognition respectively on Human3.6M and NTU RGB+D datasets., Dans cet article, nous présentons un réseaux de neurones multimodal pour l’estimation de pose et la reconnaissance multimodale favorise l’estimation de pose en combinant des données 3D très précises et des données 2D capturées dans de conditions réelles, ce que favorise aussil’apprentissage de caractéristiques visuelles génériques. Nous montrons que l’optimisation multi-objectif et multimodale du réseau entraîne de meilleurs résultats que l’optimisation séparée de chaque objectif mono-modal. Ceci nous permet de rapporter des résultats au niveau de l’état de l’art pour l’estimation de pose (Human3.6M) et pour la reconnaissance d’action (NTU RGB+D).

Abstract

Background Brain–computer interface (BCI) is a new communication pathway for users with neurological deficiencies. The implementation of a BCI system requires complex electroencephalography (EEG) signal processing including filtering, feature extraction and classification algorithms. Most of current BCI systems are implemented on personal computers. Therefore, there is a great interest in implementing BCI on embedded platforms to meet system specifications in terms of time response, cost effectiveness, power consumption, and accuracy. New-method This article presents an embedded-BCI (EBCI) system based on a Stratix-IV field programmable gate array. The proposed system relays on the weighted overlap-add (WOLA) algorithm to perform dynamic filtering of EEG-signals by analyzing the event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS). The EEG-signals are classified, using the linear discriminant analysis algorithm, based on their spatial features. Results The proposed system performs fast classification within a time delay of 0.430 s/trial, achieving an average accuracy of 76.80% according to an offline approach and 80.25% using our own recording. The estimated power consumption of the prototype is approximately 0.7 W. Comparison-with-existing-method Results show that the proposed EBCI system reduces the overall classification error rate for the three datasets of the BCI-competition by 5% compared to other similar implementations. Moreover, experiment shows that the proposed system maintains a high accuracy rate with a short processing time, a low power consumption, and a low cost. Conclusions Performing dynamic filtering of EEG-signals using WOLA increases the recognition rate of ERD/ERS patterns of motor imagery brain activity. This approach allows to develop a complete prototype of a EBCI system that achieves excellent accuracy rates.

Abstract

Action recognition and human pose estimation are closely related but both problems are generally handled as distinct tasks in the literature. In this work, we propose a multitask framework for jointly 2D and 3D pose estimation from still images and human action recognition from video sequences. We show that a single architecture can be used to solve the two problems in an efficient way and still achieves state-of-the-art results. Additionally, we demonstrate that optimization from end-to-end leads to significantly higher accuracy than separated learning. The proposed architecture can be trained with data from different categories simultaneously in a seamlessly way. The reported results on four datasets (MPII, Human3.6M, Penn Action and NTU) demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on the targeted tasks., To appear in CVPR 2018

Abstract

Archaeologists are in dire need of automated object reconstruction methods. Fragments reassembly is close to puzzle problems, which may be solved by computer vision algorithms. As they are often beaten on most image related tasks by deep learning algorithms, we study a classification method that can solve jigsaw puzzles. In this paper, we focus on classifying the relative position: given a couple of fragments, we compute their local relation (e.g. on top). We propose several enhancements over the state of the art in this domain, which is outperformed by our method by 25\%. Abstract

Background The pathological determinism of H. pylori infection is explained by complex interplay between bacterial virulence and host inflammatory response. In a large prospective multicenter clinical study, Th17 response, expression of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), cagA and vacA status, and bacterial density were investigated in the gastric mucosa of H. pylori -infected patients. Materials and methods Gastric inflammatory response was analyzed by RT-qPCR for quantification of Th17 cytokines (IL-17A, IL-22), CXCL-8, and AMPs (BD2 and S100A9) mRNA levels in gastric biopsies. Detection and genotyping of H. pylori strains were achieved by bacterial culture and PCR. Results Among 787 patients screened for H. pylori, 269 were analyzed (147 H. pylori -infected and 122 uninfected patients). In H. pylori -infected patients, distribution was 83 gastritis, 12 duodenal ulcers, 5 gastric ulcers, and 47 precancerous and cancerous lesions. CXCL-8, IL-17A, BD2, and S100A9 mRNA levels were significantly increased in H. pylori -infected patients but, surprisingly, IL-22 was not, and no difference was shown between H. pylori -related diseases. A positive correlation was identified between S100A9 expression and bacterial density. Although expression of the virulence genes cagA and vacA did not impact inflammatory response, patients infected with a cagA-positive strain were associated with severe H. pylori -related diseases. Conclusion This study showed that CXCL-8, IL-17A, and AMPs are not differently expressed according to the various H. pylori -related diseases. The clinical outcome determinism of H. pylori infection is most likely not driven by gastric inflammation but rather tends to mainly influenced by bacterial virulence factors.

Abstract

Most image retrieval methods use global features that aggregate local distinctive patterns into a single representation. However, the aggregation process destroys the relative spatial information by considering orderless sets of local descriptors. We propose to integrate relative spatial information into the aggregation process by taking into account co-occurrences of local patterns in a tensor framework. However, current methods heavily rely on costlyDNA extraction which is destructive, costly, time consuming andrequires experts. The contributions of this work are: 1) the usageof a new type of imaging, named Wing Interference Patterns(WIPs), which is non-destructive and easier to produce duringin the field experiments; 2) a deep learning architecture whichis optimized for very low computation cost, memory usage anda short inference time; 3) the use of a dataset of more than50 medically important species of hematophagous diptera withmore than 3000 images of WIPs. With these contributions, wedemonstrate that WIPs are an excellent medium to automaticallyrecognize a large amount of hematophagous diptera species withvery high accuracy and low computational cost convolutionalneural network.

Abstract

Grasping an object is an elementary behavior that looks easy for an adult. Yet, grasping an object is still a challenging topic in robotics. Classical approaches consider a sequence of sub tasks ranging from object recognition and localization, the planning of the trajectory to reach this object with the correct orientation and finally the control of the arm movements to grasp securely the object. If this approach has proved to be efficient in simple cases such as reaching a cup on an empty table, a lot of problems remain when the object or the environment is complex. Following, a lot of works have shown the interdependence and even the overlapping between the brain structures involved for real and imagined hand movements . Moreover, some recent works show that the grasping trajectory of an object is impacted by the social environment.Grasping an object in order to give it to somebody else is performed differently than picking it up to place it somewhere else. Even if the deposit place is the same, the global trajectory and especially the preparatory movement to pick the object is different. Hence, our brain is perhaps not planning the grasping as a sequence of elementary and independent subtasks. Such studies on the precise modeling of the human arm control can be found in, but is out of the scope of the present paper.

Advances in Artificial Intelligence and robotics are currently questioning theethical framework of their applications to deal with potential drifts, as well as the way inwhich these algorithms learn because they will have a strong impact on the behavior ofrobots and the type of robots. interactions with people. We would like to highlight someprinciples and ideas from cognitive neuroscience and development sciences based on theimportance of the body for intelligence, contrary to the theory of the all-brain or all-algorithm, to represent the world and interacting with others, and their current applicationsin embodied AI and developmental robotics to propose models of architectures andmechanisms for agency, representation of the body, recognition of the intention of others,predictive coding, active inference, the role of feedback and error, imitation, artificialcuriosity and contextual learning. We will explain how these are important for the design ofautonomous systems and beyond what they can tell us for the ethics of systems.

Abstract

International audience; In this article, our concern is the early diagnosis of colorectal cancer from a computer-aided detection point of view in order to help physicians in their diagnosis during the gold standard examination: optical videocolonoscopy. Since many years, some methods and materials have been developed to reduce the polyp missrate and to improve detection capabilities. Nevertheless, the real challenge lies in the real-time use of these methods. In this context, more precisely, we focus our attention on the hardware implementation of a previous method we recently introduced in the literature for real-time detection of colorectal polyps, lesions that may degenerate into cancer. This implementation is subject to three performance criteria: real-time processing capabilities, detection rate and necessary computational resources. Six different platforms were tested and compared. If we noticed that only workstation computers are able to perform the detection with a good tradeoff between the three aforementioned criteria, possibilities of architecture optimizations are also identified and discussed in order to achieve real-time performance on platforms with low available computational resources like Raspberry Pi for instance. This latter issue is of major importance for possible integration of the detection algorithm inside small-connected object like videocapsule, a promising alternative to standard colonoscopy

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we propose a neural network allowing a mobile robot to learn artwork appreciation. The learning is based on the social referencing approach. The robot acquires its knowledge (artificial taste) from the interaction with humans. We present and analyze specifically the visual system, its impact on the robot behavior, and at the end, we analyze the readability of our robot behavior according to visitors comments. We show that the low level spatial competition between the values associated to areas of interest in the image are important for the coherence of the robot's object evaluation and the readability of its behavior. Abstract

International audience; Purpose: Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancerdeath in United States when men and women are combined. Its incidence canbe mitigated by detecting its precursor lesion, the polyp, before it developsinto cancer. Colonoscopy is still the gold standard for colon screening thoughsome polyps are still missed. Several computational systems have already beenproposed to assist clinicians in this task but none of them is actually used inthe exploration room due to not meeting real time constraints and not beingtested under actual interventional sequences, compulsory to being of actualclinical use. Method: We present in this paper a real time polyp detectionmethod built by adapting an existing frame{learning-based detection systemto full sequences analysis; adaptation involves the use of more computationallyecient feature descriptors and the incorporation of spatio-temporal stabilityin method's response. We validate our methodology over a new fully publicannotated video database and under clinical and technical criteria. ResultsResults show that our approach is able to detect all dierent polyps in the18 video sequences that were considered while meeting real time constraints.More precisely, we study the impact of the choice of local feature descriptor(LBP and Haar) in the overall performance when considering usual metrics and how performance can be improved by considering a strengthening strategyin the learning process, by using spatio-temporal coherence and by combiningdierent types of local features. ConclusionWork presented in this paper showsa strategy to adapt a still-frame-based polyp detection to video analysis. Byanalyzing the performance of our system we have also discovered potentialfuture improvements related to the preprocessing of the frames extracted fromthe video. We also provide a full methodology to assess performance of a givenmethod considering both clinical usability metrics and more usual ones inmachine learning.

Besides, most of them are built over still framedatabases, decreasing their performance on video analysis due to the lackof output stability and not coping with associated variability on imagequality and polyp appearance. We propose a strategy to adapt thesemethods to video analysis by adding a spatio-temporal stability mod-ule and studying a combination of features to capture polyp appearancevariability. We validate our strategy, incorporated on a real-time detec-tion method, on a public video database. Resulting method detects allpolyps under real time constraints, increasing its performance due to ouradaptation strategy.

Abstract

When an individual joins an Online Social Network (OSN), he creates connections by interacting with the other users directly or indirectly and forms its own Online Personal Network (OPN). These OPNs are not static, but they evolve over time as new people join or quit them and as new relationships are established or old ones broken. Understanding how OPNs are evolving is still missing in the current literature, while OSNs’ evolution was widely addressed and many models were proposed. In this paper, we propose to fill this gap by performing an experimental analysis over a large set of real OPNs by the mean of the computation of metrics that characterize their structure. We examine how these metrics behave when the OPNs change over time in order to discover the properties driving the evolution of their structure, which can help in providing evolution models dedicated to OPNs.

Abstract

Comprendre le lien entre la sensorialité et l’acte moteur est à la fois un point de départ et un point d’arrivé pour comprendre la cognition humaine. Le robot est par là-même l’outil idéal pour étudier ces différents aspects. Cela nécessite à la fois de comprendre le niveau microscopique et macroscopique des modèles neuronaux et cérébraux, comprendre la biomécanique du corps et le traitement de l’information fait par les cellules sensorielles et musculaires, ainsi que toute la chaîne de processus pour apprendre, s’adapter dynamiquement face à l’imprévu. Ces questions rebouclent sans cesse dans ma recherche pour définir les mécanismes de l’Intelligence Encorporée.J’y explore trois axes de recherche qui sont la génération du mouvement, le développement cognitif, l’apprentissage sensorimoteur. Il s’agit de comprendre comment le corps est constitué, quelle est sa structure bio-mécanique, comment un système agissant peut apprendre sur le long-terme et arrive à apprendre à apprendre de ses propres actions. Ce qui lie mes recherches est une vision complexe et encorporée de l’intelligence, transversale, dont les mots-clefs sont les processus itératifs, émergents, auto-associatifs, génératifs.

Abstract

International audience; Over the past years, technological improvements and refinements in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) hardware have made high-quality diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) routinely possible for the bowel. DWI is promising for the detection and characterization of lesions in Crohn's disease (CD) and has been advocated as an alternative to intravenous gadolinium-based contrast agents. Furthermore, quantification using the apparent diffusion coefficient may have value as a biomarker of CD activity and has shown promise. In this article we critically review the literature pertaining to the value of DWI in CD for detection, characterization, and quantification of disease activity and complications. Although the body of supportive evidence is growing, it is clear that well-designed, multicenter studies are required before the role of DWI in clinical practice can be fully established. J. Magn. Abstract

The development of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), such as pedestrian detection, requires real-time update rates at high image resolution. Hopefully, heterogeneous architectures with high computing performance have been developed for this purpose. To benefit from this hardware performance, different programming languages and acceleration frameworks have been developed. OpenVX framework provides a graph-based execution model to program image processing algorithms on heterogeneous platforms. In this work, we investigate OpenVX optimizations for computer vision applications. We examine how this framework responds to different data access patterns. We test three important optimizations of OpenVX: kernels merge, data tiling and parallelization via OpenMP. The contribution and the impact of each optimization on different data access pattern are explained.

Abstract

International audience; Touch perception is an important sense to model in humanoid robots to interact physically and socially with humans. We present a neural controller that can adapt the compliance of the robot arm in four directions using as input the tactile information from an artificial skin and as output the estimated torque for admittance control-loop reference. This adaption is done in a self-organized fashion with a neural system that learns first the topology of the tactile map when we touch it and associates a torque vector to move the arm in the corresponding direction. The artificial skin is based on a large area piezoresistive tactile device (ungridded) that changes its electrical properties in the presence of the contact. Our results show the self-calibration of a robotic arm (2 degrees of freedom) controlled in the four directions and derived combination vectors, by the soft touch on all the tactile surface, even when the torque is not detectable (force applied near the joint). The neural system associates each tactile receptive field with one direction and the correct force. We show that the tactile-motor learning gives better interactive experiments than the admittance control of the robotic arm only. Our method can be used in the future for humanoid adaptive interaction with a human partner.

Abstract

In this paper, we present an improvement of the PEG algorithm for constructing quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes with large girth. We introduce the concept of PEG-undetectable cycles on the computation tree in the PEG algorithm for QC-LDPC codes and give a predictive method to avoid these undetected cycles. The aim is to select only the candidates that ensure the maximization of local girth for a code of girth g ≥ 10 and thus avoid a posteriori verification after the creation of a new edge i.e. keep the predictive philosophy of the PEG algorithm. The proposed method is applicable to both regular and irregular codes and also protograph type-I codes. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of our method in terms of minimum circulant permutation matrix p min and error performance.

Abstract

National audience; Le travail présente une méthode permettant de détecter les polypes en temps réel lors d'une coloscopie. Ces polypes (plus particulièrement la dégénérescence de ces structures) sont à l'origine du cancer colorectal qui est un des cancers les plus mortels au monde, avec un taux de mortalité avoisinant les 50%. De plus, cet examen est sujet à un fort taux de variabilité en termes de détection, on estime qu'un médecin peut manquer entre 2 % et 25 % de polypes durant une coloscopie. Une aide à la détection durant l'examen permettrait de réduire le taux de variabilité et indirectement réduire le taux de mortalité. Plusieurs méthodes ont déjà été proposées pour améliorer cette détection. Mais les performances de ces méthodes dépendent énormément des ressources calculatoires disponibles et, jusqu'à maintenant, n'étaient pas capable de faire une détection en temps réel lors de l'examen. La méthode proposée, basée sur l'apprentissage actif (elle même basée sur une stratégie de type «boosting»), est capable de compenser ce manque. Plus précisément, cette approche permet de détecter environ 90% des polypes, sur une base de données présentée à la communauté en 2012, pour un F2 Score de 65%, et fonctionnant en temps réel, rendant possible l'analyse d'une image en seulement 0.039s sur un ordinateur standard et pas nécessairement dédié à cela.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents an FPGA-based algorithm for automatic detection of QRS complexes in ECG signals,first step for the estimation of cardiac intervals. The proposed algorithm is divided into 3 parts : Filtering,Contrast Enhancement, and finally a Detection block based on an adaptive windowing and a thresholding ofthe enhanced data. The entire detection scheme was developed in accordance with embedding constraintsand in the perspective of a real-time use. We evaluated the algorithm on manually annotated databases, suchMIT-BIH Arrythmia and QT databases. The FPGA-based algorithm correctly detects 91,85 % percent of theQRS complexes, with a very limited ratio of false detection (only 5%) on standard databases, while for realtimerecords obtained from young subjects between 20 and 25 years, the sensitivity reaches 93,77 % with afalse detection ratio of only 4 %. These results are in accordance with the most recent state-of-the-art off-linealgorithms on the same database, and improves significantly FPGA-based ones that were tested on a limitednumber of ECG extracted from the MIT-BIH set of data only.

Abstract

Future robots must co-exist and directly interact with human beings. Designing these agents imply solving hard problems linked to human-robot interaction tasks. For instance, how a robot can choose an interacting partner among various agents and how a robot locates regions of interest in its visual field. Studies of neurobiology and psychology collectively named synchrony as an indispensable parameter for social interaction. We assumed that Human-Robot interaction could be initiated by synchrony detection. In this paper, we present a developmental approach for analyzing unintentional synchronization in human-robot interaction. Using our neural network model, the robot learns from a babbling step its inner dynamics by associating its own motor activities (oscillators) with the visual stimulus induced by its own motion. After learning the robot is capable of choosing an interacting agent and of localizing the spatial position of its preferred partner by synchrony detection.

Abstract

International audience; With the democratization of digital imaging devices, image databases exponentially grow. Thus, providing the user with a system for searching into these databases is a critical issue. However, bridging the semantic gap between which (semantic) concept(s) the user is looking for and the (semantic) content is quite difficult. In content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems, a classic scenario is to formulate the user query, at first, with only one example (i.e. one image). In order to address this problem, active learning is a powerful technique which involves the user in interactively refining the query concept, through relevance feedback loops, by asking the user whether some strategically selected images are relevant or not. However, the complexity of state-of-the-art active learning methods is linear in the size of the database and thus dramatically slows down retrieval systems, when dealing with very large databases, which is no longer acceptable for users. In this article, we propose a strategy to overcome scalability limitations of active learning strategies by exploiting ultra fast k -nearest-neighbor (k -NN) methods, as locality sensitive hashing (LSH), and combining them with an active learning strategy dedicated to very large databases. We define a new LSH scheme adapted to χ2χ2 distance which often leads to better results in image retrieval context. We perform evaluation on databases between 5 K and 180 K images. The results show that our interactive retrieval system has a complexity almost constant in the size of the database. For a database of 180 K images, our system is 45 times faster than exhaustive search (linear scan) reaching similar accuracy.

Abstract

Classical models of emotions consider either the communicational aspect of emotions (for instance the emotions conveyed by the facial expressions) or the second order control necessary for survival purpose when the autonomy of the system is an issue. Here, we show the interdependence of communication and meta-control aspects of emotion. We propose the idea that emotions must be understood as a dynamical system linking two controllers: one devoted to social interactions (i.e. communication aspects) and another one devoted to the interactions within the physical world (i.e metacontrol of a more classical controller). Illustrations will be provided from applications involving navigation among different goal places according to different internal drives or object grasping and avoidance.
