Abstract

Precise direct cosmic-ray (CR) measurements provide an important probe to study the energetic particle sources in our Galaxy, and the interstellar environment through which these particles propagate. Uncertainties on hadronic models, ion-nucleon cross sections in particular, are currently the limiting factor towards obtaining more accurate CR ion flux measurements with calorimetric space-based experiments. We present an energy-dependent measurement of the inelastic cross section of protons and helium-4 nuclei (alpha particles) on a Bi$_4$Ge$_3$O$_{12}$ target, using 88 months of data collected by the DAMPE space mission. The kinetic energy range per nucleon of the measurement points ranges from 18 GeV to 9 TeV for protons, and from 5 GeV/n to 3 TeV/n for helium-4 nuclei. Our results lead to a significant improvement of the CR flux normalisation. Abstract

Recent observations of the light component of the cosmic-ray spectrum have revealed unexpected features that motivate further and more precise measurements up to the highest energies. The Dark Matter Particle Explorer is a satellite-based cosmic-ray experiment that has been operational since December 2015, continuously collecting data on high-energy cosmic particles with very good statistics, energy resolution, and particle identification capabilities. In this work, the latest measurements of the energy spectrum of proton+helium in the energy range from 46 GeV to 464 TeV are presented. Among the most distinctive features of the spectrum, a spectral hardening at 600 GeV has been observed, along with a softening at 29 TeV measured with a 6.6{\sigma} significance. Moreover, the detector features and the analysis approach allowed for the extension of the spectral measurement up to the sub-PeV region. Abstract

More than a century after the performance of the oil drop experiment, the possible existence of fractionally charged particles FCP still remains unsettled. The search for FCPs is crucial for some extensions of the Standard Model in particle physics. Most of the previously conducted searches for FCPs in cosmic rays were based on experiments underground or at high altitudes. However, there have been few searches for FCPs in cosmic rays carried out in orbit other than AMS-01 flown by a space shuttle and BESS by a balloon at the top of the atmosphere. In this study, we conduct an FCP search in space based on on-orbit data obtained using the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) satellite over a period of five years. Unlike underground experiments, which require an FCP energy of the order of hundreds of GeV, our FCP search starts at only a few GeV. An upper limit of $6.2\times 10^{-10}~~\mathrm{cm^{-2}sr^{-1} s^{-1}}$ is obtained for the flux. Abstract

The measurement of the energy spectrum of cosmic ray helium nuclei from 70 GeV to 80 TeV using 4.5 years of data recorded by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is reported in this work. A hardening of the spectrum is observed at an energy of about 1.3 TeV, similar to previous observations. In addition, a spectral softening at about 34 TeV is revealed for the first time with large statistics and well controlled systematic uncertainties, with an overall significance of $4.3\sigma$. The DAMPE spectral measurements of both cosmic protons and helium nuclei suggest a particle charge dependent softening energy, although with current uncertainties a dependence on the number of nucleons cannot be ruled out., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, published in Phys. 11. Model-based analysis of sulfur-based denitrification in a moving bed biofilm reactor

Abstract

In this study, a biofilm model was developed for sulfur-based denitrification in a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR), including mass transport as well as the conversion kinetics of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB). The experimental reactor simulated received a synthetic wastewater containing nitrate, sulfide and thiosulfate. The substrate affinity of SOB for intermediary elemental sulfur (S0) was found the most sensitive parameter. After estimating this single parameter, the model could adequately describe the steady state performance of the experimental MBBR. The experimental and simulated mass balances indicated that a fraction of influent sulfur accumulated into intermediate S0. Furthermore, the simulations showed that SOB were active over the entire thickness of a 200 µm biofilm. The simulation results allowed to quantify the extent of diffusion and substrate limitation. Scenario analyses indicated that the specific nitrogen loading rate could be increased from 0.05 to 0.20 kg N.kg−1 VSS.day−1 (corresponding to 0.22–0.86 kg N.m−2.day−1 expressed per biofilm surface area) while maintaining nitrogen removal efficiencies above 70%. An increasing specific nitrogen loading rate in this range resulted in an almost linearly increasing specific nitrogen removal rate, independent from whether it was realized through a decreasing HRT, carrier filling ratio or biofilm thickness.

Abstract

A novel magnetic zinc ferrite/porous biochar composite (c-PBC/ZF) was prepared and utilized to remove radioactive thorium (Th) (IV) from aqueous solutions. Zinc chloride (ZnCl2) not only activates biochar during the hydrothermal synthesis of c-PBC/ZF but also serves as a basic raw material for the synthesis of zinc ferrite. In addition, nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) plays a dual key role in catalyzing and generating large numbers of carboxyl groups (–COOH) during synthesis. The characterization results confirmed that ZnFe2O4 (ZF) particles with cubic spinel structures were successfully embedded into the porous biochar (PBC) matrix, which endowed the composite with superparamagnetism and enabled higher Th(IV) adsorption performance than that of single PBC and ZF nanoparticles. At room temperature, batch experiments showed that the removal rate of c-PBC/ZF for Th(IV) was 97.95% when the compound ratio of c-PBC/ZF was 1:1, the pH value was 4 and the adsorbent dosage was 1.2 g/L. Through the analysis of adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics, the Th(IV) adsorption process is in good agreement with the experimental data of the quasi-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir model, indicating that the process is a spontaneous, endothermic and monolayer adsorption process. FTIR analysis verified that the main mechanism of Th(IV) removal by c-PBC/ZF was Th–O and Th(IV) complexation with a carboxyl group and a hydroxyl group. Finally, the desorption and regeneration study proved that c-PBC/ZF has a highly efficient cycling performance as an adsorbent for recovering Th(IV) from wastewater. 24. Safety and efficacy of oral lopinavir/ritonavir in pediatric patients with coronavirus disease: a nationwide comparative analysis.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Because of the limited treatment options available, oral lopinavir/ritonavir (LPR) was used for treating coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in pediatric patients. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of LPR in COVID-19 pediatric patients with mild symptoms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective multicenter analysis included hospitalized children with mild COVID-19 who received LPR at one of 13 hospitals in China from January 1, 2020, to June 1, 2020. Patients treated with LPR were matched with patients not treated with LPR (1:4) according to age, sex, and length of symptom onset and hospitalization. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests were applied to compare differences between groups. Kaplan-Meier probability curves and Cox regression models were used to analyze nasal swab turning negative time (recovery time) and hospital discharge days. RESULTS: In total, 23 patients treated with LPR were matched with 92 untreated controls. The median age of patients was 6 years, and 56.52% of them were male. All patients were discharged from the hospital after being cured. The treatment group had a longer nasal swab turning negative time (hazard ratio [HR] 5.33; 95% CI: 1.94-14.67; p = 0.001) than the control group. LPR treatment was also associated with a longer hospitalization time (HR 2.01; 95% CI: 1.24-3.29; p = 0.005). After adjusting for the influence of LPR treatment, adverse drug reaction events were associated with a longer nasopharyngeal swab negative time (HR 4.67; 95% CI 1.35-16.11; p = 0.015). CONCLUSIONS: For children with mild COVID-19, LPR is inferior to conventional treatment in reducing virus shedding time and hospitalization duration and is associated with increased adverse reactions. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The poor prognosis of advanced laryngocarcinoma was associated with the epithelial-mesenchymal transformation (EMT), which was related to the dysregulated expression of free fatty acids receptor 4 (FFAR4). By detecting the expression of FFAR4 in laryngocarcinoma and its relation with the clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of laryngocarcinoma, as well as conducting in vitro experiments, our aim is to explore the role of FFAR4 in laryngocarcinoma biological and clinical process. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The protein expression level of FFAR4 in 54 cases of laryngocarcinoma and 30 cases of laryngocarcinoma adjacent tissues was detected by immunohistochemistry. Combined with clinical follow-up data, the Kaplan-Meier survival curve and log-rank test were conducted to compare the relation between the expression of FFAR4, the clinicopathological characteristics, and the 5-year survival rate in laryngocarcinoma. Multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed the independent predictors for the prognosis of laryngocarcinoma. CCK-8 and migration assay were used to test cell proliferation and migration abilities. RESULTS: FFAR4 was upregulated in laryngocarcinoma tissues and influenced cell proliferation and migration abilities. The FFAR4 expression was related to the age and lymph node metastasis in laryngocarcinoma patients and indicated a reduced 5-year survival rate and increased lymph node metastasis. CONCLUSIONS: The upregulation FFAR4 expression was associated with the lymph node metastasis and the prognosis. Abstract

A three-dimensional subwavelength structure with periodic complementary metal patterns operating in the terahertz range has been proposed and fabricated. The device clearly exhibits three transmission modes under normal incidence, where experimental results obtained by terahertz time domain spectroscopy and simulated results agree very well with each other. The multimode transmission characteristics are found to arise from both localized coupling of fields between the interacting layers and propagating surface waves due to Bloch excitations on the surface of the periodic structure., QC 20100525

33. Enhancing extraordinary transmission of light through a metallic nanoslit with a nanocavity antenna

Abstract

The extraordinary transmission of light through a vertical nanoslit in a metal film is enhanced by introducing a nanocavity antenna formed by a nearby metallic nanostrip over the slit opening. For a fixed wavelength, the width of the metallic nanostrip should be chosen to make the horizontal metal-insulator-metal waveguide of finite length resonant as a Fabry-Perot cavity. When such a cavity antenna is used to enhance the transmission through a nonresonant nanoslit, the slit should be opened at a position with a maximal magnetic field in the horizontal resonant cavity. It is shown that an optimized cavity antenna can enhance greatly the transmission of light through a nonresonant nanoslit (by about 20 times) or a resonant nanoslit (by 124%). 34. A theoretical re-examination of giant transmission of light through a metallic nano-slit surrounded with periodic grooves

Abstract

We show that the slit-to-groove distance for a maximal transmission through the nano-slit surrounded with periodic grooves cannot be predicted by the theory of constructive interference between the groove-generated surface plasmon wave (SPW) and the incident wave. A clear physical explanation is given for the dependence of the transmission on the slit-to-groove distance. It is shown that the influence to the transmission comes from three parts: the groove-generated SPW, the incident wave and the nano-slit-generated SPW. The groove-generated SPW is the main factor determining the local field distribution around the nano-slit opening. The influence of the incident wave is very weak when strong SPW is generated on the input surface by many periods of deep grooves. The transmission of light through a single nanoslit milled in the metallic film is enhanced by using an array of nanocavity antennas. It is shown that transmission efficiency through a 25-nm-wide silver nanoslit can be enhanced to eta = 151 when six pairs of nanostrips are placed 50 nm away from the input surface of the silver film at wavelength lambda(0) = 1 mu m. Abstract

Hyper-IgE syndrome ( HIES) is a rare primary immunodeficiency disease characterized by eczema, recurrent staphylococcal aureus skin abscesses, pneumonia with pneumatocele formation, remarkably high serum IgE levels, eosinophilia and involvement of skeleton and connective tissues. Heterozygous signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 ( STAT3) mutations were shown to be the cause of autosomal dominant HIES ( AD- HIES). In this study, we diagnosed nine patients with HIES from 9 unrelated families on the basis of a National Institutes of Health ( NIH) score of ≥40 points, sequenced the STAT3 gene of all nine patients, and quantified Th17 cells in peripheral blood of seven patients by flow cytometry in mainland China. All nine patients had characteristic manifestation of HIES with the range of NIH scores 45-77 points. STAT3 hot mutations V637M or R382W/Q were identified in five patients. We identified two novel heterozygous missense mutations (T620S and R609G) located in Src homology 2 ( SH2) domain in two patients, respectively. In two other patients, no STAT3 mutations were found. Quantified Th17 cell numbers were markedly decreased or absent (0-0.28% of CD4+T cells) in six patients with STAT3 mutations and almost normal (0.53% of CD4+T cells) in one wild-type STAT3 patient compared with healthy controls (0.40-2.25% of CD4+T cells). These results suggest that not all patients with HIES who had NIH scores over 40 points carry STAT3 mutations, those whose Th17 cell numbers strikingly decreased probably had AD- HIES with STAT3 mutations.
