Study aim: The aim of the study was to perform an anthropometric analysis of children of the minority population of younger school age from eastern Slovakia.

In this study, data presented of birds of prey (Accipitriformes, Falconiformes) specimens deposited in the collection of the Šariš Museum in Bardejov (SMB), Slovakia. The work builds on previous studies highlighting the importance of the SMB museum collections, but also the importance of the museum on a global scale. In total, data of 437 individuals belonging to 22 species from 86 sites in eastern Slovakia were evaluated. Individuals were acquired in 1954–1985 (and two specimens of Buteo buteo in 1998), but mainly in 1962 (n = 63, 14.4%) and 1963 (n = 32, 7.3%). Moreover, one specimen of the Common Buzzard (B. buteo) had signs of „a dilution (isabel)" and one bird of the Western Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus) had signs of „melanism". The importance of the work also includes cataloguing, which provides important data on regional museums and their collections that can be significant not only regionally but also globally. Moreover, in the SMB collections there are also 20 specimens of 15 species of exotic Accipitriformes and Falconiformes [1 ex. – Accipiter striatus; 1 ex. – Buteo buteo; 1 ex. – B. ventralis; 1 ex. – Buteogallus gundlachii; 1 ex. – B. meridionalis; 1 ex. – Caracara plancus; 1 ex. – Elanoides forficatus; 5 ex. – Falco sparverius; 1 ex. – Geranoaetus polyosoma; 1 ex. – Gyps africanus; 1 ex. – Haliaeetus albicilla; 2 ex. – Ictinia plumbea; 1 ex. – Pandion haliaetus; 1 ex. – Rupornis magnirostris; 1 ex. – Vultur gryphus] originating mainly from Argentina and Cuba as well from Africa and Hungary. The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution and plumage phenotypes of the feral pigeon, Columba livia forma urbana (Gmelin, 1789), in Slovakia. Censuses carried out in the built-up areas of 16 towns and cities from November to February (2012–2018) counted and evaluated 3,123 individual birds. The most frequent were melanic colored birds (checker, T-pattern and spread phenotypes), which predominated in the population (51.6%, n = 1,613), followed by paler ones (42.1%, n = 1,316) and other types (6.2%, n = 194). A statistically significant difference was confirmed among the melanic and paler plumage phenotypes (χ2 = 81.49, df = 15, p < 0.0001). Correlation confirmed the different importance of city area and human density on the maintenance of dark and/or pale pigeons living in cities.

Asthma is a chronic heterogeneous disease with characteristic symptoms, but with proper treatment the patient can lead a full life. In patients with allergic asthma, symptoms appear after irritation with an allergen, most often in the pollen season. In 2019, the viral disease COVID-19 appeared, which, especially in people with asthma, led not only to an asthma attack, but also to other serious diseases. The main aim was to investigate differences in patients' health status by comparing spirometric values in and out of pollen season (A), spirometric values before and after COVID-19 viral illness (B) and an anonymous questionnaire (C). Spirometric values were recorded in each patient (control group - patients diagnosed with asthma, research group - patients after overcoming COVID-19 disease) in 3 cycles, namely (in the pollen period, in the non-pollen period and after overcoming COVID-19 disease - at an interval of 2 months after a negative PCR test). We observed significant results during the individual spirometry performed (A) during the pollen season and non-pollen season. We observed the same in patients after they received COVID-19 treatment (B). Patients were also asked questions regarding family history, symptoms and their variability, worsening of the condition or correct inhalation technique (C). Our research shows that the PEF parameter is most affected by the pollen and non-pollen season in asthmatic patients. Significant differences in PEF parameter were observed between genders, where we observed highly significant statistical significance of PEF parameter in pollen and non-pollen season in females. Overweight and obesity in childhood and young people represent a large global health problem. Therefore, the main aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of overweight/obesity by body mass index (BMI) and its associated lifestyle factors among university students in Slovakia. The BMI index was examined in relation to nine life factors for both sexes, respectively, in a sample of 200 (108 men and 92 women) young university students from Slovakia. The data were obtained using anthropometric measurements and by means of a questionnaire. The results for BMI values confirmed that both sexes were classified into the “about right” weight category. Analysis of the BMI values and questionnaire data showed different results for both sexes. While the type of daily activity and type of physical activity were associated with greater obesity for men, in women, tobacco intake was an important.

This study summarizes 17-year results of teriological research of small mammal fauna in Košice Zoo (near the village of Kavečany, 48°47'10.04"N, 21°12'3.26"E, 380 – 420 m a.s.l.). The small mammals evaluated in this study were obtained by trapping in three periods (1992 – 1994, 2000 – 2001, 2003 – 2004) and were the results of three diploma theses. In total, 688 small mammals belonging to 13 species of four families Soricidae, Gliridae, Cricetidae and Muridae were recorded by trapping during the study period. Rodents significantly dominated with 8 species, 583 ex. (84.7%) compared to insectivores represented by 5 species, 105 ex. (15.3%). A gradual diversity decline of small mammal fauna was recorded, with only four mammal species confirmed in 2003 – 2004. This marked difference over the last 17 years was probably the result of anthropic modifications of the Zoo area, mainly the cutting of trees and shrubs of the alluvium, technical modifications of the streambeds as well as the deratization of the building areas and animal enclosures. The assemblage's structure of captured small mammals could also be influenced by other factors, such as the predominant type of traps used, or the number of exposed traps in the vegetation and non-vegetation periods of the year. The obtained results are also a suitable basis and source of information for comprehensive and long-term monitoring in this area, given the epidemiological importance of this group of animals and the possibility of contact with exotic animals. This contribution fills the Diptera biodiversity knowledge gap of two National Nature Reserves in the east of Slovakia. In total, 53 flies species from 24 families were confirmed in NNR Dreveník and NNR Sivá Brada. Among them tree new records of Dolichopodidae for the fauna of Slovakia: Campsicnemus magius (Loew, 1845), Chrysotus palustris Verrall, 1876, Ephydridae: Notiphila (Agrolimna) uliginosa Haliday, 1839) as well as four valuable species known only from few records from Slovakia Tachytrechus ocior Loew, Dixella obscura (Loew, 1849), Psilopa stackelbergi Nartshuk, 1970, Cnodacophora stylifera (Loew, 1870). As an additional new record Sybistroma discipes (Germar, 1817) (Dolichopodidae) is added from Levoča town, near Röhrgrund pond. In this study are presented data of individuals belonging to armadillos (Cingulata, Chlamyphoridae, Zaedyus) from unknow locality of South America (probably from the Chubut region of Argentina). The author states the occurrence of Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber Linnaeus, 1758) in the East Slovakia based on indirect signs from water courses. A total of 96 territories (localities) were observed over the years 2016 – 2017. The obtained data help spreading knowledge of species distribution in the territory of Slovakia. In recent decades there has been an increased tendency of colonization of cites. This phenomenon posed the need for a new term – synurbization. The Common wood pigeon (Columba palumbus) is a Palearctic species that has a predominantly European distribution. Although it is the typical woodland species, it has adapted to urban habitats, colonising cities of Western and Central Europe. A total of 32 individuals (i.e., 12 pairs (24 inds.) and 8 inds.) of C. palumbus were documented over the four years (2019 – 2022) in Prešov city (Slovakia). The obtained faunistic data from the monitored areas contribute to overall knowledge about the occurrence of the species in urban environment from Slovakia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
