CRTAM (Class-I MHC restricted T cell-associated molecule) is a member of the Nectin-like family, composed of two extracellular domains, one constant domain (IgC) and another variable domain (IgV), expressed in activated CD8 T cells, epithelial cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and in a subpopulation of CD4 T cells. CRTAM recognizes the ligand Nectin-like 2 (Necl2) through the IgV domain. However, the role of the IgC domain during this ligand recognition has yet to be understood. In this study, we show the purification of soluble-folded Ig domains of CRTAM, and we demonstrate that the IgC domain forms a homodimer in solution via hydrophobic interactions. By surface plasmon resonance (SPR) analysis, we also demonstrate that CRTAM binds to Necl2 with an affinity of 2.16 nM. In conclusion, CRTAM's IgC is essential for a high-affinity interaction with Necl-2.

Simple Summary: Immune-cell activation is triggered upon antigen or target recognition. This is modulated by co-stimulatory or co-inhibitory signals provided by the cellular environment. The balance between activating and inhibitory receptors controls immune homeostasis, while a disbalance contributes to chronic inflammation and autoimmunity. Binding partners of the Nectin protein family of adhesion molecules are widely expressed in the immune system and are mainly described in cancer immunology. This review summarizes the expression pattern of Nectin binding partners as immune-activating and -inhibitory receptors and how they modulate immune responses in health and autoimmunity. Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial childhood solid tumor. The majority of high-risk neuroblastoma is resistant/refractory to the current high intensity therapy, and the survival of these patients remains poor for the last three decades. To effectively treat these extremely unfavorable neuroblastomas, innovative immunotherapy approaches would be the most promising. In this article, we discuss the identity of tumor-infiltrating effector cells and immunosuppressive cells in high-risk neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is unique in that it expresses little or no classical HLA Class I and II. In contrast, high-risk neuroblastomas express the stress-responsive non-classical Class I, HLA-E molecule. HLA-E is the ligand of activating receptors NKG2C/E that are expressed on memory NK cells, CD8+T cells and CD4 CTLs. By examining a comprehensive RNA-seq gene expression dataset, we detected relatively high levels of CD4 expression in high-risk neuroblastoma tissues. The majority of CD4+ cells were CD3+, and thus they were likely tumor-associated CD4+T cells. In addition, high-level of both CD4 and NKG2C/E expression was associated with prolonged survival of the high-risk neuroblastoma patients, but CD8 levels were not, further suggesting that the CD4+ NKG2C/E+ T cells or CD4 CTL conferred cytotoxicity against the neuroblastoma cells. However, this T cell mediated- “protective effect” declined over time, in part due to the progressive formation of immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. These observations suggest that to improve survival of high-risk neuroblastoma patients, it is essential to gain insights into how to enhance CD4 CTL cytotoxicity and control the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment during the course of the disease.

Class-I restricted T cell-associated molecule (CRTAM) is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, and it is closely related to nectin-like protein. CRTAM is expressed in activated CD8 T cells, NKT cells, NK cells and in a subpopulation CD4 T cells. In this study, we produce as recombinant proteins, the Ig-domains of CRTAM (IgV–IgC), the IgV, and the IgC. These proteins were successfully purified in the soluble fraction only if the stalk region was included. The recombinant CRTAM recognizes its ligand nectin-like 2 in a cell-free system. We also demonstrate that the IgC domain of CRTAM is recognized by the anti-hCRTAM monoclonal antibody C8 with a 0.62 nM affinity. The immunomodulatory (IM) subtype of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) exhibits high expression of immune cell signaling genes and is more responsive to immunotherapy. However, the specific mechanism underlying this phenomenon remains unclear. One of the potential key genes appears to be the cytotoxic and regulatory T cell molecule (CRTAM). A cohort of 360 previously untreated TNBC patients from Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center (FUSCC) underwent RNA sequencing analysis of their primary tumor tissue. Combined with three RNA-seq datasets obtained from the GEO database, a LASSO regression analysis was conducted to identify genes specific to the IM type of TNBC. Our findings revealed elevated CRTAM expression in the IM-type TNBC, which correlated with a favorable overall survival and recurrence-free survival in TNBC patients. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis indicated a strong association between CRTAM and immune responses as well as immune system processes. Notably, CRTAM overexpression induced STAT1 phosphorylation and upregulation of interferon-stimulated genes. We also found that CRTAM enhanced tumor-associated immune cell infiltration, especially CD8+ T cells, which may be related to the increased expression of MHC class I molecules caused by CRTAM overexpression. Infections at this site can cause significant perturbations in the microbiota, known as dysbiosis, that facilitate the expansion of pathobionts, and can elicit inappropriate immune responses that impair the intestinal barrier function. Dysbiosis typically occurs during intestinal infection with Toxoplasma gondii. Host resistance to T. gondii depends on a potent Th1 response. In addition, a Th17 response is also elicited. How Th17 cells contribute to the host response to T. gondii remains unclear. Due to their increasing rates of morbidity and mortality, childhood malignancies are considered a global health priority, with acute lymphoblastic leukemias (ALLs) showing the highest incidence worldwide. Control of malignant clone emergence and the subsequent normal‐leukemic hematopoietic cell out‐competition require antitumor monitoring mechanisms. Investigation of cancer surveillance innate cells may be critical to understand the mechanisms contributing in either disease progression or relapse, and to promote displacement of leukemic hematopoiesis by the normal counterpart. We report here that NK cell production is less and low hematopoietic progenitor numbers contribute to this defect. By investigating the expression of the activation molecule class I restricted T‐cell associated molecule (CRTAM) along the hematopoietic lineage differentiation pathway, we have identified lymphoid precursor populations coexpressing CD34, CD56/CD3/CD19, and CRTAM as the earliest developmental stage where activation may take place in specialized niches that display the ligand nectin‐like‐2. Of note, bone marrow (BM) from patients with ALL revealed high contents of preactivated CD56high NK cells expressing CRTAM and endowed with an exhaustion‐like phenotype and the functional capability of producing IL‐10 and TGF‐β in vitro. Our findings suggest, for the first time, that the tumor microenvironment in ALL directly contribute to exhaustion of NK cell functions by the CRTAM/Necl‐2 interaction, and that the potential regulatory role of exhausted‐like NK cells may favor malignant progression at the expense of anti‐tumor responses. Phenotypic and functional identity of this unique suppressor‐like NK cell population within the leukemic BM would be of special interest for the pathobiology of ALL and development of targeting strategies. T cell activation is a multifaceted process that depends on the activation of the T cell receptor (TCR). However, other coreceptors are also strictly necessary to provide co-signals and modulate the immune response. However, to date, most of these coreceptors are unknown in fish or their information is very limited. Therefore, in this work, we have identified the cytotoxic and regulatory T cell molecule, CRTAM, and its ligand, the cell adhesion molecule 1, CADM1, in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata); and evaluated their transcriptional levels. Both putative proteins showed the canonical architecture observed in mammals, where CRTAM exhibited two immunoglobulin domains and CADM1, both the a and b forms, exhibited three of these domains. In addition, phylogeny and synteny analyses showed their conservation throughout vertebrate evolution. We found constitutive expression of all three genes, with crtam and cadm1a being predominant in immune tissues such as spleen, thymus and head-kidney (HK), while cadm1b expression was more limited to the brain. In vitro , only the T cell mitogen phytohemagglutinin (PHA) up-regulated the transcription of crtam and cadm1a in HK leucocytes. Nodavirus (NNV) infection elicited an up-regulation of crtam and cadm1a in brain and HK, appearing earlier in seabream than in seabass, which could explain the resistance of seabream to the development of nodavirus disease. In addition, they are up-regulated during the innate cell-mediated cytotoxic response in seabream but not in seabass. Altogether, our data seem to indicate that CRTAM is more related to the innate cytotoxicity in seabream and more in the specific and T cell-mediated cytotoxicity in seabass. Class I-restricted T cell-associated molecule (CRTAM) is an activation marker expressed on the cell surface of activated invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells, CD8+ T cells, and a small subset of CD4+ T cells. CRTAM has also been associated with a proinflammatory profile in murine CD4+ T cells. However, CRTAM has not been thoroughly explored in human cells. This work focused on evaluating CRTAM expression in human iNKT lymphocytes after activation with α-galactosylceramide, its widely used specific glycolipid antigen. We also analyzed the involvement of costimulatory molecules in CRTAM expression and whether CRTAM expression is associated with a specific effector cytokine profile. We found that the signal produced by invariant T cell receptor (iTCR) engagement with α-galactosylceramide is sufficient to trigger CRTAM expression on human iNKT cells after 18 h of stimulation. Moreover, we observed a clear association between CRTAM expression and IFN-γ production in iNKT cells from healthy subjects and patients with type 1 diabetes. However, blocking the engagement of costimulatory molecules, such as CD40, CD80, and CD86, did not modify CRTAM expression. These results indicate that CRTAM may also play a role in triggering the production of IFN-γ in human iNKT cells and that CRTAM could be used as a marker to identify these inflammatory cells. Cell-mediated immune activation and inflammation have been suggested as key pathophysiological mediators of illness caused by stress and major depressive disorder (MDD). Previous studies have shown that MDD is an inflammatory disorder because plasma levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines are increased in the depressed patients. We have conducted studies to characterize differentially expressed genes in postmortem prefrontal cortex (PFC) of MDD. In the current study, using Gene Ontology analysis, we have identified that ‘natural killer cell-mediated cytotoxicity' pathway genes are overrepresented in the set of up-regulated genes in the PFC of MDD. To determine if altered gene expression is relevant to Gata1, we tested whether several natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxicity genes are up-regulated in cultured neurons by Gata1 overexpression. We found that the mRNA expression of class-I restricted T cell associated molecule (Crtam), nuclear factor, interleukin 3 regulated (Nfil3), and granzyme B (Gzmb) were significantly increased by the Gata1 overexpression in the cultured cortical neurons. Crtam is an immune receptor that is primarily expressed on activated cytotoxic lymphocytes, including NK cells and CD8 + T cells. Nfil3 is a transcription factor that affects the development of NK cells, and Gzmb is a serine protease that is produced by cytotoxic T cells and NK cells. These results suggest that cell-mediated immune activation is involved in the pathological mechanisms of MDD, and that Gata1 may be associated with immune activation in the central nervous system. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that is characterized by the specific destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic cells. Invariant natural killer b T (iNKT) cells have been associated with development of T1D. Class I MHC- restricted T cell-associated molecule (CRTAM) is expressed on activated iNKT, CD8+, and CD4+ T cells, and it is associated with the pro-inflammatory profiles of these cells. Crtam gene expression in CD3+ lymphocytes from non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice is associated with T1D onset. However, expression of CRTAM on T cells from patients with T1D has not yet been evaluated. We compared iNKT cell (CD3+Vα24+Vβ11+) numbers and CRTAM expression in a Mexican population with recent-onset T1D and their first-degree relatives with control families. Remarkably, we found lower iNKT cell numbers in T1D families, and we identified two iNKT cell populations in some of the families. One iNKT cell population expressed high iTCR levels (iNKThi), whereas another expressed low levels (iNKTlo) and also expressed CRTAM. These findings support a probable genetic determinant of iNKT cell numbers and a possible role for these cells in T1D development. T cell activation leads to the induction of genes that are required for appropriate immune responses. This includes CRTAM (Class-I MHC-restricted T cell associated molecule), a protein that plays a key role in T cell development, proliferation, and generating cell polarity during activation. We previously characterized the CRTAM promoter and described how AP-1 family members are important for inducing CRTAM expression upon antigenic activation. Here, we show that CRTAM is a molecular target for ZEB1 (zinc finger E-box-binding protein), a homeodomain/Zn finger transcription factor. Overexpression of ZEB1 repressed CRTAM promoter activity, as well as endogenous CRTAM levels in human T cells. ZEB1-mediated transcriptional repression was abolished when E-box-like elements in the CRTAM promoter are mutated. Introduction: The neuropeptide pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) is considered to be a potential therapeutic agent for prevention of cerebral ischemia. Ischemia is a most common cause of death after heart attack and cancer causing major negative social and economic consequences. This study was designed to investigate the effect of PACAP38 injection intracerebroventrically in a mouse model of permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (PMCAO) along with corresponding SHAM control that used 0.9% saline injection. Methods: Ischemic and non-ischemic brain tissues were sampled at 6 and 24 hours post-treatment. Following behavioral analyses to confirm whether the ischemia has occurred, we investigated the genome-wide changes in gene and protein expression using DNA microarray chip (4x44K, Agilent) and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DGE) coupled with matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), respectively. Western blotting and immunofluorescent staining were also used to further examine the identified protein factor. Results: Our results revealed numerous changes in the transcriptome of ischemic hemisphere (ipsilateral) treated with PACAP38 compared to the saline-injected SHAM control hemisphere (contralateral). Previously known (such as the interleukin family) and novel (Gabra6, Crtam) genes were identified under PACAP influence. In parallel, 2-DGE analysis revealed a highly expressed protein spot in the ischemic hemisphere that was identified as dihydropyrimidinase-related protein 2 (DPYL2). The DPYL2, also known as Crmp2, is a marker for the axonal growth and nerve development. Interestingly, PACAP treatment slightly increased its abundance (by 2-DGE and immunostaining) at 6 h but not at 24 h in the ischemic hemisphere, suggesting PACAP activates neuronal defense mechanism early on. Conclusions: This study provides a detailed inventory of PACAP influenced gene expressions and protein targets in mice ischemic brain, and suggests new targets for thereaupetic interventions. Abstract: CRTAM was reported as a novel receptor expressed in activated NKT and CD8 T lymphocytes. However, we have recently shown that it is also expressed in several non-immune tissues. In opposition to what has been stated for lymphoid cells, CRTAM expression is constitutive in epithelia, suggesting a role in cell–cell interactions. Given the importance of cell interactions during T lymphocyte development, we evaluated CRTAM during T lymphocyte ontogeny. Here we show that CRTAM has an unexpected constitutive expression in adult thymocytes and, remarkably, it is sustained during all stages of thymocyte development. CRTAM expression is restricted to CD8 and all DN subpopulations, with a consistent pattern from E13.5 stage to adult mice. Blocking CRTAM interaction with CADM1 impairs thymus growth, uncovering a novel role in thymus development, with a consequent impact in thymocyte maturation. Abstract: Class-I MHC-restricted T-cell associated molecule (CRTAM) is a member of the Nectin-like adhesion molecule family. It is rapidly induced in NK, NKT and CD8+ T cells. Interaction with its ligand Nectin-like 2 results in increased secretion of IFN-γ by activated CD8+ T lymphocytes. Through sequential bioinformatic analyses of the upstream region of the human CRTAM gene, we detected cis-elements potentially important for CRTAM gene transcription. Analyzing 2kb upstream from the ATG translation codon by mutation analysis in conjunction with luciferase reporter assays, electrophoretic mobility shify assay (EMSA) and supershift assays, we identified an AP-1 binding site, located at 1.4kb from the ATG translation codon of CRTAM gene as an essential element for CRTAM expression in activated but not resting human CD8+ T cells. CRTAM expression was reduced in activated CD8+ T cells treated with the JNK inhibitor SP600125, indicating that CRTAM expression is driven by the JNK–AP-1 signaling pathway. This study represents the first CRTAM gene promoter analysis in human T cells and indicates that AP-1 is a positive transcriptional regulator of this gene, a likely important finding because CRTAM has recently been shown to play a role in IFN-γ and IL-17 production and T cell proliferation. Background: Previously, our group identified cytotoxic and regulatory T-cell molecule ( Crtam), zinc finger and BTB domain containing 16 ( Zbtb16), and myelin-associated oligodendrocytic basic protein ( Mobp) as ethanol-responsive genes in the mouse brain by gene expression profiling. In this study, we used a genetic co-segregation analysis to assess the association of Crtam, Zbtb16, and Mobp with the alcohol preference (AP) phenotype in the alcohol-preferring C57BL/6J (B6) and alcohol avoiding DBA/2J (D2) strains of mice. Methods: Semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to confirm previous microarray analysis results that Crtam, Zbtb16, and Mobp brain mRNA levels in the B6 and D2 strains are altered by ethanol treatment. The association of the 3 genes with AP was assessed in a F2 population ( n = 427) derived from the reciprocal crosses involving the B6 and D2 strains. Each F2 individual was assessed for their AP using the 2 bottle choice test and genotyped for Crtam, Zbtb16, and Mobp single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that differ between B6 and D2 mice. Results: Semi-quantitative RT-PCR analysis confirmed that Crtam, Zbtb16, and Mobp are ethanol-responsive genes. The SNP analyses show that alleles of the 3 genes co-segregate with the AP phenotype in F2 mice, where individuals homozygous for the B6 allele have higher AP than those homozygous for the D2 allele. Also, the Crtam–Zbtb16 loci that are tightly linked and the Mobp locus act in an additive fashion in determining the relative AP phenotype. Conclusion: Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that Crtam, Zbtb16, and Mobp may be involved in AP in mice. The nature of this association remains to be established and may reflect a direct effect of these genes or an indirect effect caused by linked genes on mouse chromosome 9. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We have previously reported the characterization of a novel immunoglobulin supergene family member, designated class-I MHC-restricted T cell associated molecule (CRTAM). Here we further characterize human CRTAM and find that it is highly expressed in the cerebellum, notably in Purkinje neurons. We identify CRTAM as a new member of the nectin-like (Necls) family and find significant expression of Necl-2 (IGSF4), a protein known to bind CRTAM and another member of the nectin superfamily, in the cerebellum. These findings suggest that CRTAM/Necl-2 binding may contribute to neuronal interactions. We also show that, in the immune system, CRTAM expression is restricted to activated class-I MHC-restricted T cells, including NKT and CD8 T cells. CRTAM represents one of the most highly expressed surface markers of activated human CD8 T cells and NKT cells, suggesting it may have diagnostic uses in various human viral and autoimmune diseases. Abstract Introduction The neuropeptide pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) is considered to be a potential therapeutic agent for prevention of cerebral ischemia. Ischemia is a most common cause of death after heart attack and cancer causing major negative social and economic consequences. This study was designed to investigate the effect of PACAP38 injection intracerebroventrically in a mouse model of permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (PMCAO) along with corresponding SHAM control that used 0.9% saline injection. Methods Ischemic and non-ischemic brain tissues were sampled at 6 and 24 hours post-treatment. Following behavioral analyses to confirm whether the ischemia has occurred, we investigated the genome-wide changes in gene and protein expression using DNA microarray chip (4x44K, Agilent) and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DGE) coupled with matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), respectively. Western blotting and immunofluorescent staining were also used to further examine the identified protein factor. Results Our results revealed numerous changes in the transcriptome of ischemic hemisphere (ipsilateral) treated with PACAP38 compared to the saline-injected SHAM control hemisphere (contralateral). Previously known (such as the interleukin family) and novel (Gabra6, Crtam) genes were identified under PACAP influence. In parallel, 2-DGE analysis revealed a highly expressed protein spot in the ischemic hemisphere that was identified as dihydropyrimidinase-related protein 2 (DPYL2). The DPYL2, also known as Crmp2, is a marker for the axonal growth and nerve development. Interestingly, PACAP treatment slightly increased its abundance (by 2-DGE and immunostaining) at 6 h but not at 24 h in the ischemic hemisphere, suggesting PACAP activates neuronal defense mechanism early on. Conclusions This study provides a detailed inventory of PACAP influenced gene expressions and protein targets in mice ischemic brain, and suggests new targets for thereaupetic interventions.

Class-I Restricted T Cell-Associated Molecule (CRTAM) is a protein that is expressed after T cell activation. The interaction of CRTAM with its ligand, nectin-like 2 (Necl2), is required for the efficient production of IL-17, IL-22, and IFNγ by murine CD4 T cells, and it plays a role in optimal CD8 T and NK cell cytotoxicity. CRTAM promotes the pro-inflammatory cytokine profile; therefore, it may take part in the immunopathology of autoimmune diseases such as diabetes type 1 or colitis. Thus, antibodies that block the interaction between CRTAM and Necl2 would be useful for controlling the production of these inflammatory cytokines. In this work, using bioinformatics predictions, we identified three short disordered epitopes (sDE1-3) that are located in the Ig-like domains of murine CRTAM and are conserved in mammalian species. We performed a structural analysis by molecular dynamics simulations of sDE1 (QHPALKSSKY, Ig-like V), sDE2 (QRNGEKSVVK, Ig-like C1), and sDE3 (CSTERSKKPPPQI, Ig-like C1). sDE1, which is located within a loop of the contact interface of the heterotypic interaction with Nectl2, undergoes an order–disorder transition. On the contrary, even though sDE2 and sDE3 are flexible and also located within loops, they do not undergo order–disorder transitions. We evaluated the immunogenicity of sDE1 and sDE3 through the expression of these epitopes in chimeric L1 virus-like particles. We confirmed that sDE1 induces polyclonal antibodies that recognize the native folding of CRTAM expressed in activated murine CD4 T cells. In contrast, sDE3 induces polyclonal antibodies that recognize the recombinant protein hCRTAM-Fc, but not the native CRTAM. Thus, in this study, an exposed disordered epitope in the Ig-like V domain of CRTAM was identified as a potential site for therapeutic antibodies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to their increasing rates of morbidity and mortality, childhood malignancies are considered a global health priority, with acute lymphoblastic leukemias (ALLs) showing the highest incidence worldwide. Control of malignant clone emergence and the subsequent normal-leukemic hematopoietic cell out-competition require antitumor monitoring mechanisms. Investigation of cancer surveillance innate cells may be critical to understand the mechanisms contributing in either disease progression or relapse, and to promote displacement of leukemic hematopoiesis by the normal counterpart. We report here that NK cell production is less and low hematopoietic progenitor numbers contribute to this defect. By investigating the expression of the activation molecule class I restricted T-cell associated molecule (CRTAM) along the hematopoietic lineage differentiation pathway, we have identified lymphoid precursor populations coexpressing CD34, CD56/CD3/CD19, and CRTAM as the earliest developmental stage where activation may take place in specialized niches that display the ligand nectin-like-2. Of note, bone marrow (BM) from patients with ALL revealed high contents of preactivated CD56 high NK cells expressing CRTAM and endowed with an exhaustion-like phenotype and the functional capability of producing IL-10 and TGF-β in vitro. Our findings suggest, for the first time, that the tumor microenvironment in ALL directly contribute to exhaustion of NK cell functions by the CRTAM/Necl-2 interaction, and that the potential regulatory role of exhausted-like NK cells may favor malignant progression at the expense of anti-tumor responses. Phenotypic and functional identity of this unique suppressor-like NK cell population within the leukemic BM would be of special interest for the pathobiology of ALL and development of targeting strategies., (©2019 Society for Leukocyte Biology.)

Vitamin D has received tremendous amount of attention recently due to the ever-increasing reports of association between vitamin D deficiency and a wide range of conditions, from cancer to fertility to longevity. The fascination of disease association with vitamin D deficiency comes from the relatively easy solution to overcome such a risk factor, that is, either by increase in sun exposure and/or diet supplementation. Many reviews have been written on a protective role of vitamin D in asthma and related morbidities; here, we will summarize the epidemiological evidence supporting a role of vitamin D against hallmark features of severe asthma, such as airway remodeling and asthma exacerbations. Furthermore, we discuss data from in vitro and in vivo studies which provide insights on the potential mechanisms of how vitamin D may protect against severe asthma pathogenesis and how vitamin D deficiency may lead to the development of severe asthma. Approximately 5-15% of asthmatic individuals suffer from the more severe forms of disease in spite of aggressive therapies and they are more likely to have irreversible airflow obstruction associated with airway remodeling. At present drugs commonly used to control asthma symptoms, such as corticosteroids, do not significantly reverse or reduce remodeling in the airways. Hence, if vitamin D plays a protective role against the development of severe asthma, then the most effective therapy may simply be a healthy dose of sunshine., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc.
