The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of zinc (Zn)-supplemented diets on the growth, survival, and immunological indices of juvenile Pacific white shrimp, Penaeus vannamei. Four experimental diets were prepared and offered, which were: a non-supplemented basal diet (T1), a diet supplemented with organic Zn at 10 mg/kg (T2), a diet supplemented with organic Zn at 15 mg Zn/kg (T3), and a diet supplemented with inorganic Zn at 45 mg/kg (T4). In the 30-day feeding trial, specific growth rate, weight gain, and survival were significantly higher in shrimp fed T3 diets than in those fed T1 or T2. There were no significant differences in total haemocyte counts observed among the juvenile P. vannamei treated with Zn diets. In addition, dietary Zn supplementation significantly increased phagocytic activity of juvenile P. vannamei. Overall, these results indicate that appropriate dietary Zn has beneficial effects on growth, survival, and immune responses of juvenile Pacific white shrimp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E and K, are molecules with no energy value that are essential for the body to function and for life. Their intake is almost exclusively exogenous, i.e. dietary. As a result, deficiencies in fat-soluble vitamins are rarer in industrialised countries than in countries with limited resources. However, even in the latter, certain groups of individuals are affected, such as newborns or growing children, pregnant or breast-feeding women and elderly or isolated subjects. Vitamin A, D, E and K deficiencies are also relatively common in people with digestive tract disorders, in patients suffering from chronic pathologies or in intensive care patients. Deficiencies or excesses of fat-soluble vitamins are responsible for a variety of more or less specific clinical symptoms. Treatment of deficiencies requires vitamin supplementation, a well-balanced diet and treatment of the cause. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alice’s adventures in Wonderlands, is the story of growth and transformation. A continuous oscillation between what we were, what we are, what we could be and what we will become. It is the story of questions and answers that generate other questions. The tale of fear, truth and courage. Of everything and the opposite of everything. The story that tells of the uncanny of every change. The tale of the truth inscribed in every dream. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The aim of this trial was to compare the physicochemical characteristics of water, the survival rate and growth of Oreochromis niloticus under aquaponic and closed classical circuit. To achieve this aim, from March to April 2020, 230 adults of Oreochromis niloticus, with initial mean weight of 53.2 ± 1.03 g were randomly distributed in equal number into two concrete tanks corresponding to an Aquaponic System and Classical Closed system. The physicochemical characteristics were recorded every five days, and data for growth characteristics were collected after 15 days. After 45 days of rearing, the high of Capsicum chinense were measured and age of flowering plants noted. the mains results were as follows: Dissolved Oxygen values (9.0 ± 1.7 mg / l), ammoniac nitrogen (0.3 ± 0.05 mg / l) and nitrates (3.31 ± 0.7 mg / l) were higher in a closed classical circuit as compared to the aquaponic system, the final mean weight (118.3 ± 25.4 g), the mean weight gain (65.1 ± 28.3 g), the condition factor K (K = 3.8 ± 1.6) and survival rate (100%) were higher in aquaponic system. The survival rate (91.0 ± 0.2 %) and the final high of Capsicum chinense (52.03 ± 0.5 cm) were higher and the flowering age (30,0 ± 2,0 j) was very short in aquaponic system. The aquaponic system offers a better environment for life and growth to Oreochromis niloticus and Capsicum chinense as compared to the classical closed circuit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of different stocking volumes on the survival and growth of broodstocks of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus. Based on a Pearson correlation test, 0.70 litre tanks with three groups at different stocking densities (15, 10 and 5 individuals per tank) have been used in this study. The results show that the mortality rate due to cannibalism was high in the first test group, while it was found to be lower in the third group. There were significant differences in survival rates in the three different groups used in this trial of broodstock cultivation (p < 0.05). The higher the stocking densities, the lower the survival rates, i.e., significantly increasing the broodstock density reduces the survival rate. Statistical differences have also been found in the development rates of broodstock crabs (p < 0.05), and it has been noted that there is slower development at higher stocking densities. If calculating the optimal stock density for mass production purposes is desired, less density thus appears to be more advantageous for both survival and growth rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Octolasion tyrtaeum (Savigny, 1826), a cosmopolite earthworm species widespread around the world, is known to consist of two morphologically distinct forms, small (4-8 cm long) and large (10-14 cm) ones that sometimes are found in sympatry. The earthworm O. tyrtaeum plays a significant ecological role in soil nutrient cycling and ecosystem health. Understanding their cocoons' incubation and hatching patterns is essential for gaining insights into their reproductive biology and population dynamics. During the study, laboratory observations were made to investigate the incubation process and hatching pattern of O. tyrtaeum cocoons. Three hundred seventy-two cocoons were collected from orchards and agroecosystem sites of tehsil Dhari District Nainital. Cocoons of O. tyrtaeum were incubated under controlled laboratory conditions. Out of 372 cocoons, 131 were collected from orchard waste, followed by mixed habitat soil 127 and agriculture waste 114, respectively. The incubation period was monitored at an interval of 4 hrs regularly. Hatching was recorded for better understanding, and the number of hatchlings per cocoon was recorded, during the present study, the incubation period of O. tyrtaeum cocoons ranged from 30 to 45 days. During incubation, cocoons displayed distinct color changes, transitioning from a pale yellowish hue to a dark brown colour. The observed variation in incubation duration and the number of hatchlings per cocoon suggest the presence of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence the reproductive success of this earthworm species. This study highlights the importance of knowing the life cycle and reproductive traits of one possible key species in soil management due to its vast distribution and ease of culture. FOREST fires , *CLIMATE change , *TREE growth , *FOREST fire management , *FOREST productivity , *TAIGAS , *CONIFEROUS forests - Abstract
Climate change is having complex impacts on the boreal forest, modulating both tree growth limiting factors and fire regime. However, these aspects are usually projected independently when estimating climate change effect on the boreal forest. Using a combination of three different methods, our goal is to assess the combined impact of changes in growth and fire regime due to climate change on the timber supply at the transitions from closed to open boreal coniferous forests in Québec, Canada. To identify the areas that are likely to be the most sensitive to climate change, we projected climate-induced impacts on growth and fire activity at three different time periods: 2011–2040 RCP 8.5 for low growth change and minimum fire activity, 2071–2100 RCP 4.5 for moderate growth change and medium fire activity, and 2071–2100 RCP 8.5 for high growth change and maximum fire activity. Our study shows the importance of incorporating fire in strategic forest management planning especially in a context of climate change. Under the most extreme scenarios, the negative impact of fire activity on productive area and total volume mostly offsets the positive effects of climate change via improved tree growth. The growth and reproduction of Charybdis bimaculata (Miers, 1886) were investigated in Goheung Bay, Korea, from February 2020 to February 2021. Females were observed more frequently than males. The gonadosomatic index varied monthly, and reached the highest value in July. Ovigerous females peaked in July as well. The main spawning season was summer. The size at sexual maturity of females, corresponding to a proportion of 0.5 sexually mature individuals, was estimated as 20.93 mm carapace width (CW). The relationship between ln number of eggs (EN) and ln CW was ln EN = 1.59 ln CW + 4.92 for noneyed eggs, and ln EN = 1.91 ln CW + 6.11 for eyed eggs. Males grew faster than females ( L ∞ = 43.65 mm CW and K = 0.95 year−1 for males, and L ∞ = 43.65 mm CW and K = 0.8 year−1 for females). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to determine the most suitable kind of feed for the mud crab, Scylla paramamosain , to grow from juvenile to broodstock size and to monitor their monthly size and growth rate, as well as to (1) record them reaching maturity and (2) their subsequent mating frequency. For this research, a Complete Randomized Design was used with three treatments. Each treatment was carried out with 40 individuals. The crabs are usually grown in 90 m3 concrete tanks. The three feeds tested were: (A) trash fish, Leiognathus equula , (B) a combination of that ice trash fish and oyster meat from Crassostrea iredalei , and, (C) that same oyster meat only. The feed was always given at 3-10% of total body weight/day. Newly adult male crabs were selected for mating with a newly adult female crab. The male crabs fed treatments B and C grew faster than male crabs fed treatment A. While the female crabs fed treatment C grew significantly faster than female crabs fed treatment A (p < 0.05), but not significantly than the female crabs fed treatment B (p > 0.05). A total of 30 female crabs were followed in mating from July 2020 to January 2021, and the highest mating intensity was found from September to October 2020. The present study indicates that mud crabs grow fast when they are fed treatment C, i.e., oyster meat only. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Life history theory aims to explain the diversity in morphology, development, and reproductive strategies among organisms. Resource constraints often lead to allocation trade-offs between life-history traits. To offset its high energetic demands, organisms time reproduction to coincide with periods of resource abundance. Reproductive strategies exist along an allocation continuum, where income breeders immediately expend acquired energy on reproduction, while capital breeders accumulate energy reserves and use them later to sustain the cost of reproduction. Iteroparity allows for flexible allocation to multiple reproductive events to maximize fitness and better manage annual environmental variation. Iteroparous species are often long-lived with high adult survival and slow development. Natural selection favours individuals that effectively allocate between current reproduction and future fitness potential, acting across the entire lifespan of individuals. My thesis aimed to quantify the costs of reproduction and growth-reproduction trade-offs in females of a wild population of eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) followed over 14 years. In my second chapter, I estimated the effects of interannual and cumulative reproduction on skeletal growth (n = 378 measures), mass gain (n = 376 measures), and subsequent reproduction (n = 388). I also examined the (co)variation of these traits among years and individuals to explore how environmental and individual variation affected growth and reproductive potential. In my third chapter, I explored the causes of reproduction, in terms of how environmental conditions and juvenile growth affected primiparity and early reproductive success in about 100 females. I investigated the consequences of early reproduction on growth and late-life reproductive success. - Abstract
Pineapple Fruitlet Core Rot (FCR) is a fungal disease characterized by a multi-pathogen pathosystem. Recently, Fusarium proliferatum, Fusarium oxysporum, and Talaromyces stollii joined the set of FCR pathogens until then exclusively attributed to Fusarium ananatum. The particularity of FCR relies on the presence of healthy and diseased fruitlets within the same infructescence. The mycobiomes associated with these two types of tissues suggested that disease occurrence might be triggered by or linked to an ecological chemical communication-promoting pathogen(s) development within the fungal community. Interactions between the four recently identified pathogens were deciphered by in vitro pairwise co-culture bioassays. Both fungal growth and mycotoxin production patterns were monitored for 10 days. Results evidenced that Talaromyces stollii was the main fungal antagonist of Fusarium species, reducing by 22% the growth of Fusarium proliferatum. A collapse of beauvericin content was observed when FCR pathogens were cross-challenged while fumonisin concentrations were increased by up to 7-fold. Antagonism between Fusarium species and Talaromyces stollii was supported by the diffusion of a red pigmentation and droplets of red exudate at the mycelium surface. This study revealed that secondary metabolites could shape the fungal pathogenic community of a pineapple fruitlet and contribute to virulence promoting FCR establishment.

- Abstract
Increasing the planting density of mango orchards appears promising for obtaining higher yields, particularly during the first productive years. However, the challenge is to maintain a good balance between vegetative growth and fruit production in the longer term. The objective of this study was to decipher the effects of planting density, training system and cultivar on young mango trees' growth and production. The experiment, conducted in North Queensland, consisted of five combinations of planting density and training system applied to the cultivars Keitt, Calypso and NMBP-1243. The planting densities were low (208 tree ha−1), medium (416 tree ha−1) and high (1250 tree ha−1). The closed vase conventional training system was applied at each density. Single leader and espalier on trellis training systems were applied at medium and high densities, respectively. The tree canopy dimensions were measured every 6 months from planting, and tree production was recorded from the third to the fifth years after planting. Vegetative growth and fruit production were the results of complex interactions between planting density, training system, cultivar and/or time. The expected increase in orchard yield with higher planting density was observed from the first productive year, despite lower individual tree production at high planting density. Lower vegetative growth and fruit production at high planting density were probably caused by competition between trees. NMBP-1243 and Keitt showed more rapid vegetative growth. Keitt was the most productive cultivar during the first three productive years. The detailed results of this study provide avenues to further explore the behaviour of mango trees at high planting densities.

The prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) is an essential economic and ecological medicinal plant in arid and semi-arid areas, especially in Morocco, where water scarcity affects its survival and growth. Evidence suggests that subsurface water retention technology (SWRT) may enhance crops' drought resistance. A field experiment was conducted to explore SWRT application effects on cactus cladodes' growth and physiological and biochemical performance under drought conditions. Two water regimes were applied (rainfed conditions; irrigated with 4 L of water twice a week) with two treatments (without SWRT; with SWRT). The results showed that cactus cladodes' growth and physiological and biochemical parameters cultivated for 8 months were negatively affected by drought. Drought-exposed cactus cladodes under SWRT application showed an increase in surface area and cladode stomatal densities by 65% and 29%, respectively, compared with no SWRT. This technology reduced drought-induced oxidative stress by mitigating malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide excess by 22% and 17%, respectively. Moreover, lower levels of enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant activities were concluded, and soil organic matter and assimilable phosphorus contents were enhanced. In conclusion, our findings highlighted SWRT's positive impacts on the tested parameters, thus presenting it as a promising technology for cactus growth and development improvement under water deficiency. The white-clawed crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes is endangered throughout its entire biogeographic range in Europe due to infection with Aphanomyces astaci (crayfish plague) and habitat deterioration. Ex situ propagation is of increasing importance to safeguard genetic resources and enable restocking measures after the pathogen's disappearance. This study aimed to quantify the impact of crude protein content on growth response and survival of white-clawed crayfish as optimal growth efficiency of white-clawed crayfish captive rearing has remained largely unexplored. Three separate 80 day feeding trials were conducted: juvenile monosex and juvenile mixed sex crayfish fed medium and high protein diets, and mixed sex adult crayfish fed low and high protein diets. Survival, weight gain and carapace length gain were measured bi-weekly during the trials. Growth response as the relative gain in cephalothorax length in juvenile mixed sex assemblages was significantly higher for the medium protein diet (Mdn = 19.4) than for the high protein diet (Mdn = 15.2, U = 7.84 , p = 0.009) with an average carapace length increase of 18.3% compared to 16.1% for the medium and high protein diet, respectively. However, there was no significant difference in the relative weight gain of juvenile mixed sex assemblages. All data for weight gain and carapace length gain for the juvenile monosex assemblages and adult mixed sex assemblages were not significant in response to diets. Thus, there was no obvious advantage of a high protein diet in the captive rearing of A. pallipes and in the case of the juvenile mixed sex assemblage the higher protein content can reduce growth in terms of size. We compared four oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) progenies' morphological growth characteristics to reveal genotypic differences in plant growth and assess their adaptability in Nigeria's environment in response to different levels of potassium chloride (KCl) and kieserite fertilizer applications. The studied progenies (C1, C2 and C3 of Deli × La Mé origin and C4 of Deli × Yangambi origin) represent a wide genetic diversity of oil palm and have shown among a population of 116 different progenies, a contrasting K and Mg leaflet concentrations that covered the extreme ranges of leaflet concentrations in these minerals. The trial consisted of a completely randomized split-plot factorial design with six replicates, where progenies, considered as sub-factor were treated with combinations of 3 levels of potassium chloride (0, 1.5, 3.0 kg of KCl palm−1 year−1) and kieserite (0, 0.75, 1.5 kg of MgSO4 palm−1 year−1) fertilizers (main factor), respectively. Growth characteristics differed significantly among progenies, but not in all studied years. In all progenies, KCl treatments significantly increased the average annual collar girth increment and projected canopy area. Adding 3.0 kg palm−1 year−1 of KCl significantly increased the total leaf area of progeny C4. Kieserite applications did not have an effect on progenies' growth characteristics whereas potassium showed to be the main mineral needed for oil palm growth. It was shown that with equal amounts of fertilizers applied, progeny C3 had better morphological traits than the other progenies, suggesting that the effective nutrient requirements should be assessed for each individual progeny and that fertilization should be adapted accordingly. Colletotrichum higginsianum is an economically important anthracnose pathogen of crucifers that causes losses worldwide. For comprehensive control of anthracnose disease, it is essential to understand the mechanisms of pathogenicity in C. higginsianum. The Ser/Thr kinase Sch9 belonging to the AGC (protein kinase A, G, and C) kinase family, commonly found in eukaryotes, plays a vital role in various cell signalling pathways and development. However, it has not been studied in Colletotrichum species. Three domains, Protein kinase C conserved region 2 (C2), Serine/Threonine protein kinase catalytic (S_TKc) and Extension to Ser/Thr-type protein kinases (S_TK_X), were identified in the C. higginsianum Sch9 (ChSch9) protein. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that ChSch9 is closely related to the AGC kinase family, which is conserved in fungi. Deletion of ChSch9 caused defects in hyphal morphology, growth and conidiation. In addition, deletion of ChSch9 was associated with reduced tolerance to hyperosmotic, cell wall and oxidative stresses in C. higginsianum, and ChSch9 deletion mutants were more tolerant to heat. Furthermore, we found that ChSch9 might be involved in the pyruvate–acetaldehyde fermentation pathway. Importantly, deletion of ChSch9 led to a reduction in appressoria and infective hyphae formation, resulting in defects in virulence. Collectively, the results of this study indicate that ChSch9 is required for infection-related morphogenesis and virulence in C. higginsianum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Two six-month old female Lacaune lambs with severe skeletal malformations of both front limbs were presented to the Department of Farm Animals, University of Zurich. The clinical examination showed alert animals with a high body weight and body condition score as well as a valgus deformation without pain or swelling. Radiographic examination showed severe irregularities in the epiphysial plate of the metacarpal bones in both lambs. Delayed growth in the lateral aspects of the physis was evident and resulted in valgus deformation. Nutritional causes were considered as the main reason for this presentation and a nutritional consultation was performed by the Institute of Animal Nutrition and Dietetics, University of Zurich. The estimated energy intake of these lambs was 65 % higher than the recommended maximum for growing sheep and the estimated vitamin D content of the diet was 71 % below the recommended allowance. Both animals were euthanized, and peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) was performed postmortem to measure total bone mineral density (BMD), trabecular bone mineral density (tBMD) and cortical bone mineral density (cBMD) of the left and right metatarsal bone of both animals. The BMD and the tBMD at 10 % of bone length were below the reference values and the BMD at 50 % was above the reference values. In addition, postmortem examination revealed a Salter-Harris-Typ-1 facture in the right caput humeri of one lamb. Histological evaluation showed defects in the articular cartilage with an eburnation in the metacarpal region and a disrupted area of columnar cartilage. This case report supports the fact that a high dietary energy intake leads to damage to the cartilage and the epiphyseal zone in sheep. In addition, insufficient dietary vitamin D intake contributed to the incomplete bone mineralization, as well as delayed growth and skeletal malformation.

- Abstract
The management of the Samandeni fishery, Burkina Faso, built in 2017 requires, reliable information but as for now, they are missing, insufficient and fragmentary. This piece of work intends to analyse the fish community in terms of diversity, growth, and exploitability. To do so, fish were sampled between April 2018 and January 2019 with cast net and gillnets. The species were identified, and each fish weighed, and its total length measured. We recorded 40 species, regrouped in 29 genera and 14 families. The most represented families are the Cichlidae, Mormyridae and Mochokidae. Dominant species are Sarotherodon galilaeus Siluranodon auratus, Schilbe intermedius, Coptodon zillii et Oreochromis niloticus. The study suggests that fish and the aquatic ecosystem are in conditions. The results of this study will contribute to plan the management of the new fishery and provides basis to understand future changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different doses of gamma rays on morphological and agronomical parameters of wheat seeds (Anza). The experiment was conducted in the experimental station of the National School of Agricultural Sciences, El Harrach, Algiers (Algeria). The wheat crop was carried out on a plot in complete random block, by evaluating the growth and yield components of a crop, over two consecutive years, of this common wheat variety (Anza) grown in Algeria. Seeds samples were irradiated with low doses of gamma rays at 0.10,0.15 and 0.20 KGy (KiloGry), while OKGy dose was used as a control. The results showed that the number of germinated seeds was not affected by the irradiation treatment. The highest stem height was given by the control in both years, whereas in the first crop year, the 0.20KGy dose with the control showed the best spike length (8.97cm). In the second year, the highest number of raised feet/m² was recorded with wheat at 0.20KGy (149). The evolution of yield components according to irradiation doses revealed that the highest number of spikes/m² was also obtained from samples irradiated at 0.20KGy, the control gave the highest number of seeds by spike, while an improvement in 1000 grain weight was seen at 0.20KGy in both crops. The 0.20KGy dose also produced the highest grain yield at harvest of the two years (56 and 55q/ha). There was an interaction between the crop year and the radiation dose for the number of raised feet and the number of spikes/m². The low gamma ray doses, particularly 0.20 KGy dose, contributed to the improvement of the morphological and agronomical properties of the local common wheat (Anza) grown in Algeria, including spike length, number of raised feet and spikes/m², 1000 grain weight and grain yield.
