In the UK, student nurses, nursing associates and midwives are supervised by practice supervisors and practice assessors while completing the placement-based component of their training. Because of increased clinical commitments, staff shortages and rising student numbers, demands for the supervision and assessment of student nurses have increased in recent years and this was exacerbated by COVID-19. The Nursing and Midwifery Council's Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment separated the roles of practice supervisor and assessor, giving rise to opportunities to assess students in a different way. Some integrated care systems are exploring the new role of roaming assessor. Roaming assessors can fulfil the role of practice assessors while providing additional support for student nurses. This role could be expanded to other health professions. This article explores the use of practice learning facilitators as roaming assessors for student nurses in the UK and evaluates the potential benefits and limitations of this approach. Roaming assessors may provide a useful service to deliver practice assessments, increasing the reliability and availability of assessments.

Objective: To understand how nursing care management occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic., Method: A qualitative study conducted at a university hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. The sample consisted of eight nurses who worked caring for patients who tested positive for COVID-19. Data collection was carried out through semi structured interviews about experiences in managing care in coping with the pandemic. Thematic analysis and interpretation based on psychodynamics of work were used in data analysis., Results: The results allowed constructing three thematic categories: The invisible that limits: biosafety, distress, uncertainty and fear of the pandemic, protecting oneself and ensuring the protection of others; Management work process instruments: team training, staff sizing, materials management, creative practice in the face of insufficiency; The competencies involved with the team, teamwork and leadership., Conclusion: Care management in COVID-19 was permeated by objective and subjective conditions, with situations of distress, pleasure, fear, insecurity and creative adaptation. Teamwork and leadership competencies, when present, can alleviate the distress that occurs in nursing work.

Events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have increased people's awareness of mental health issues. Psychological trauma impacts patients in the acute care setting through physical and mental health presentations. Trauma is a public health issue crossing all socioeconomic groups and is related to social determinants of health. Trauma-informed care (TIC) is an evidence-based approach to providing care. TIC is within the scope of nursing practice and improves outcomes for patients. However, there is a lack of standard terms or practices within healthcare. Additionally, there is superficial acknowledgment of the need for TIC at the local or national level regarding policy. Nurses need to adopt TIC into practice and advocate for policy change to improve the health and lives of those seeking care.

Aim: This study aimed to determine clinical nurse and nurse manager perspectives on missed nursing care (MNC) during the COVID-19 pandemic., Design: This study utilized a qualitative exploratory descriptive design., Methods: Data were obtained through focus groups and virtual interviews. Purposive sampling was used to select nurse and nurse manager participants in COVID-19 units and the Emergency Department in one large healthcare organization in the northeastern United States of America., Results: A total of 15 nurses and nurse managers participated in the study. Results revealed five categories: medication delivery, turning patients, double checks, communication and rapport, and patient surveillance., Conclusions: A variety of factors contributed to the perceptions and experiences of MNC of COVID-19 patients during the early stage of the pandemic. The COVID-19 crisis put additional and unparalleled pressure on a strained nursing workforce. Hospital leaders are responsible for ensuring their frontline nurses have the resources they need to feel supported in their roles regardless of the presenting circumstances., Implications for the Profession: Nurse leaders should employ evidence-based strategies such as promoting and championing teamwork to support staff and reduce incidences of MNC during crises. The population experiencing Alzheimer's disease (AD) and their caregivers have been tremendously impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Outpatient services became less accessible during the pandemic lockdown which caused increased caregiver burden more than usual. Further examination discovered that caregivers were unable to properly take care of themselves because of the need to provide around-the-clock care to loved ones, who pre-pandemic were able to receive supplemental caregiving services. The purpose of this integrative review was to provide a synthesis of information regarding caregiver experiences, during a time of limited resources, such as with the COVID-19 global pandemic. A comprehensive search of the literature databases Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and Medline was completed yielding qualitative and mixed-methods studies. The literature search yielded 14 articles which met the criteria. Three themes emerged during this review. They include: Deprivation of self-care and social connectedness, Fragmented care and resources, and Improved policy development. Multiple gaps in caregiver needs have been identified throughout the literature. Outpatient services, home health aides, and respite care remain necessary elements of care for those with AD and for the relief of the caregiver. Retaining mid-career nurses is a priority to address the nursing shortage exacerbated by COVID-19. Nurses are more likely to stay if they feel valued. This scoping review revealed a variety of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and external factors that influence how mid-career nurses feel valued. Nursing professional development practitioners can influence satisfaction and retention by implementing mentoring and professional development programs for nurses and managers. Problem: Limited research has examined and synthesized the adaptation of midwives and midwife-led interventions during crises., Background: Evidence suggests that midwives are essential to respond to sexual and reproductive health care needs during disruptive times, and that they adapt to continue to provide their services during those circumstances., Aim: To map the adaptations of midwives when providing care during crises globally. Secondary objectives include identifying which midwives adapted, what services were adapted and how, and the demographic receiving care., Study Methods: Scoping review using Levac's modifications of Arksey and O'Malley's methods. Publications and grey literature, in English and Spanish, with no limitations based on study design or date were included. Data was extracted and mapped using Wheaton and Maciver's Adaptation framework., Findings: We identified 3329 records, of which forty-two were included. Midwives' prior training impacted adaptation. Midwives adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic, epidemics, natural disasters, and World War II. They adapted in hospital and community settings around the provision of antenatal, labor and birth, postpartum, and contraceptive care. However, no specific data identified population demographics. Midwifery adaptations related to their practice, role, and scope of practice., Conclusion: The limited available evidence identified the challenges, creativity, and mutual aid activities midwives have undertaken to ensure the provision of their services. The COVID 19 pandemic has had a tremendous impact on nursing and health care delivery systems. Recent research demonstrates a correlation between the stress of providing complex health care and the decline of nurse well-being. Investing in the well-being of nurses can benefit the entire health care system. Educational institutions can play a role in enhancing nurse well-being by incorporating holistic nursing education principles into the curriculum, including reflective practice methods to promote self-awareness and self-care. This may be challenging for some nursing programs, but the Power of Nursing course can help close this gap. This noncommercial course incorporates key elements of holistic nursing including authenticity, empathy, compassion, unconditional acceptance, and self-care; elements not always emphasized in a traditional curriculum. Introduction: Following the COVID-19 pandemic, a community emergency department was facing a staffing crisis with new emergency registered nurse turnover rates as high as 83.3%. There were limited experienced emergency nurses available to train the large number of novice nurses hired to fill vacancies. Based on this, the emergency department needed to restructure the orientation process to better align with evidence-based strategies and available resources., Methods: The Seven Steps of Evidenced-based Practice were used to identify the best practices for an orientation program specific to the emergency department. Based on the evidence, a 16-week, competency-based, emergency nurse internship was implemented in the 33-bed community emergency department., Results: The primary outcome of this initiative was new emergency nurse retention, which demonstrated a statistically significant reduction from 81.8% (pre-intervention) to 11.1% (post-intervention) (P < .001). Nursing documentation is essential to communicate patient care delivery. This review explores available evidence on the contribution of nursing documentation toward quality care delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nine articles were evaluated for at least one of the 6 factors of quality (eg, safe, timely, equitable, patient-centered, effective, and efficient). Analysis suggests that right-sizing documentation for optimal care quality requires continued efforts to reinforce the value and need of nursing documentation as a primary data source. Newly licensed registered nurses (NLRNs) were significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Background: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation training is a mandatory competency, especially for healthcare professionals. However, the spread of COVID-19 caused a sharp decline in the number of participants on advanced life support training, thereby accelerating the diversification of educational methods. Gamification is an increasingly popular method of diversifying instruction, but its effectiveness remains controversial., Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of gamification learning in advanced life support training., Design: A cluster randomized controlled trial., Setting: A single advanced life support training center., Participants: Clinical nurses who are currently practicing in a hospital., Methods: A part of the existing advanced life support course was gamified using Kahoot! platform. Conventional learning and gamified learning were each conducted 11 times, and the level of knowledge after training was assessed. The assessment questions were categorized into advanced life support algorithms, teamwork, and cardiac arrest rhythms., Results: A total of 267 were enrolled in the study, and 148 and 139 learners were assigned to CL and GL, respectively. There was no difference in post-training knowledge related to teamwork, and cardiac arrest rhythms between the conventional learning and gamified learning groups, but knowledge related to the advanced life support algorithm was low in the gamified learning group., Conclusions: Even if the learners are the same, advanced life support gamification training can lead to negative outcomes depending on the simplicity or goal of the training content. Aim: To develop a framework for understanding the stress appraisal process among acute care nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic., Design: A secondary analysis of open-ended responses from a cross-sectional survey of 3030 frontline, acute care nurses in New Jersey and the effect of burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: Lazarus and Folkman's transactional model of stress and coping guided the study. Thematic analysis was used to analyse 1607 open-ended responses., Results: Nine themes emerged during the secondary appraisal of stress. Five themes contributed to distress and burnout including (1) high patient acuity with scarce resources, (2) constantly changing policies with inconsistent messaging, (3) insufficient PPE, (4) unprepared pandemic planning and (5) feeling undervalued. Four themes led to eustress and contributed to post-traumatic growth including (1) team nursing to ensure sufficient resource allocation, (2) open channels of communication, (3) sense- of-duty and (4) personal strength from new possibilities., Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic was a traumatic event for patients and the nursing workforce. Internal and external demands placed on acute care nurses increased burnout, however, a subset of nurses with adequate support experienced personal growth., Implications for the Profession And/or Patient Care: Beyond mental health interventions for acute care nurses, organizational interventions such as reevaluation of emergency action plans to optimize resource allocation, and work environment strategies such as improved communication and decision-making transparency are necessary., Impact: To better understand how frontline acute care nurses experienced stress during COVID-19, a data-informed framework was developed that included a primary and secondary appraisal of stress. Background: The mass redeployment of nurses was critical across countries necessitated by the acute health impact of Covid-19. Knowledge was limited regarding how to manage nurse redeployment or the impact that redeployment might have. Redeployment continues, particularly in response to the current staffing crisis and surges such as winter pressures. This study aims to address these gaps in evidence to inform guidance on how best to manage nurse redeployment in practice., Objectives: First, to understand the processes and underpinning decisions made by managers when managing nurse redeployment prior to and during the Covid-19 pandemic. Second, to identify the lessons that can be learned to improve the management of on-going nurse redeployment., Design: Qualitative study utilising semi-structured interviews and focus groups with nurse managers (ISRCTN: 18172749)., Setting(s): Three acute National Health Service (NHS) Trusts in England with geographical and ethnic diversity, and different Covid-19 contexts., Participants: Thirty-two nurse managers and four Human Resource advisors responsible for redeploying nurses or receiving and supporting redeployed nurses., Methods: Participants took part in face-to-face or virtual semi-structured interviews from February 2021 to November 2021 and virtual focus groups from July to December 2021. Qualitative data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis., Results: Four themes were evident in the data, capturing four distinctive phases of the redeployment process. There was a fundamental mismatch between how different parts of the nursing and managerial workforce conceived of their decision-making responsibilities across different phases. This led to managers taking inconsistent and sometimes contradictory approaches when redeploying nurses, and a disconnect between nursing staff at all levels of the chain of command. Furthermore, in conjunction with limited guidance in operationalising redeployment and the distressing experiences vocalised by nurses, nurse managers found nurse redeployment logistically and emotionally challenging; and felt 'caught in the middle' of meeting both their managerial and mentoring responsibilities. This became increasingly challenging during subsequent phases of redeployment and remained challenging once the pandemic waned., Conclusions: The approach to nurse redeployment in response to the Covid-19 pandemic prioritised nurse staffing numbers over personal well-being. Key principles of good practice relating to nurse redeployment during the Covid-19 pandemic can be applied to improve future redeployment of nurses and support positive outcomes. Aim: This study investigated the job performance and predictability of job demands, job resources, personal resources, work engagement, job crafting, and the transformational leadership of nurse managers on this among nurses in Myanmar., Background: The ongoing crisis of nursing shortages along with heavy workloads combines to form a major challenge in Myanmar and these affected the job performance of nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: Utilizing a stratified random sample of 474 nurses from tertiary-level general hospitals in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, a descriptive predictive analysis was carried out. The Demographic Data Sheet, Job Performance Scale, Work Engagement Scale, Job Demands Scale, Job Resources Scale, Personal Resources Scale, Job Crafting Scale, and Global Transformational Leadership Scale were utilized to collect data., Results: The overall level of job performance was perceived to be high, considering various factors such as job demands, personal resources, work engagement, and job crafting were found as significant predictors of nurses' job performance, explaining 63.30% of the total variance., Discussion: These findings make a valuable contribution toward enhancing nurses' job performance by addressing job demands, fostering work engagement, and nurturing their job-crafting capabilities. Aim: To explore the benefits and challenges of a recently introduced Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing workforce from the perspective of Nurses and Registered Undergraduate Students of Nursing, in a major metropolitan hospital in Australia in 2020., Design: A qualitative descriptive study was undertaken using individual interviews and focus groups., Methods: Purposively selected employed Registered Undergraduate Students of Nursing and nurses who worked with them were interviewed, using a semi-structured format. Recordings were transcribed and coded using NVivo software. Reflexive thematic analysis using an inductive approach was undertaken., Results: Four major themes were revealed: (i) Navigating the programme, (ii) Belonging and integration; (iii) Patient care; and (iv) Continuing Development. Initial challenges were common, often related to clarifying the scope of practice for the new role. Ongoing issues were associated with gaps in understanding the role and lack of integration into the team. Mostly, nurses and Registered Undergraduate Students of Nursing built positive, professional relationships. Nurses valued the Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing knowledge and skill level, reporting improved workload and work experiences when the Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing was on shift. Nurses believed that the Registered Undergraduate Students of Nursing enhanced patient care. Registered Undergraduate Students of Nursing described positive, therapeutic relationships with patients. Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing employment provided opportunities for new learning, leading to increased efficiency and confidence on clinical placement., Conclusions: This employment model benefited the Registered Undergraduate Students of Nursing and nurses who worked with them. In the absence of adequate training and support, challenges remained unresolved and negatively impacted the experience for nurses. In addition to university-level education and clinical placement, the employment model can create a third space for student learning via on-the-job training. The study supports the ongoing employment of student nurses through the Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing model., Implications for the Profession And/or Patient Care: Impact This study contributes to the very small body of literature investigating Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing workforces in Australian hospitals. It is the first to explore the experiences of both nurses and students working together in a major metropolitan setting and also the first in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study reflected a mostly positive experience for Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing and the nurses who worked with them and highlighted the importance of adequate oversight and support in the implementation and maintenance of a Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing workforce. Employed Registered Undergraduate Students of Nursing reported improved confidence, skills, and felt like they started clinical placement at an advantage, ready to step up and learn the Registered Nurse scope of practice. Purpose: This study described pediatric nurses' professional quality of life during COVID-19 and explored demographic/clinical practice factors independently associated with compassion satisfaction (CS), burnout (BO), and secondary traumatic stress (STS)., Design and Methods: The Relational Caring Complexity Theory was used. This study employed a cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational design to describe professional quality of life of pediatric nurses (demographic questionnaire and ProQOL 5 measure) working during the COVID-19 pandemic., Results: From 150 pediatric nurses, the mean scores were CS 40.8 (± 4.8), BO 22.6 (± 4.7), and STS 22.8 (± 5.8). Results of the multiple regression revealed that two variables, deployed to the same unit versus not deployed (β = 2.424, p = .02) and currently practicing in perioperative/ambulation settings versus intensive care (β = -0.272, p = .03), were independently associated with CS. Deployed to the same unit versus not deployed was found to be independently and significantly associated with BO (β = -0.28, p = .005). The number of patients cared for with COVID-19 (β = 0.196, p = .03) was significantly associated with STS., Conclusions: While the overall response was positive, these nurses were more likely to experience BO when deployed to the same area (likely a COVID-19 adult unit) and STS as they cared for more patients with COVID-19., Practice Implications: Leaders should be aware of the impact of caring in times of crisis. Background: The increase in intensive care unit (ICU) capacity compelled by the COVID-19 pandemic required the rapid deployment of non-critical-care registered nurses to the ICU setting. The upskill training needed to prepare these registered nurses for deployment was rapidly assembled due to the limited timeframe associated with the escalating pandemic. Scoping the literature to identify the content, structure, and effectiveness of the upskill education provided is necessary to identify lessons learnt during the COVID-19 pandemic response so that they may guide workforce preparation for future surge planning., Aim: The aim of this scoping review was to map the literature to identify the available information regarding upskill training and preparedness of non-critical-care registered nurses deployed to the ICU during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: This scoping review was conducted in accordance with JBI methodology. A protocol outlined the review questions and used the participants, concept, and context framework to define the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A search of healthcare databases MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCO), Cochrane, and Scopus was supplemented with a grey literature search via Google., Results: Screening and review found 32 manuscripts that met the inclusion criterion for examination. Analysis revealed variation in duration of programs, theoretical versus practical content, face-to-face or online mode of delivery, and duration of preparation time at the bedside in the ICU setting. Data on contributors to preparedness for deployment were sparse but included training, support, peer education, buddy time, and clarity around responsibilities and communication., Discussion: Evaluation of upskill education was mostly limited to post-training surveys. Few studies explored the preparedness of deployed registered nurses as an outcome of their upskill training or described measures of effectiveness of ICU deployment., Conclusion: There is limited evidence describing preparedness of non-critical-care registered nurses on deployment to the ICU. Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has put an exceptional strain on intensive care delivery and has significantly impacted nursing practice in the intensive care unit, consequently affecting nurses' working environment and health. Little is known about the long-term impact on the nursing workforce and care delivery in intensive care and anaesthetic departments., Aim/objective: This cross-sectional study aimed to describe the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the nursing profession and nursing care from the perspectives of anaesthetic and critical care nurses., Methods: In this study, an online questionnaire with open- and close-ended questions was distributed to registered nurses working in anaesthesia and intensive care between February 8 and March 7, 2022. The data were analysed using content analysis and descriptive statistics., Results: Of the 514 registered nurses who responded to the questionnaire, 256 (50%) worked in anaesthesia care and 215 (42%) in intensive care. The long-term impact of COVID-19 was expressed in three categories: nursing care on hold, insights and experiences forming a new professional identity, and the impact of organisational conditions on the profession. Critical care nurses considered nursing care comparable to that before the COVID-19 pandemic. Nurse anaesthetics experienced changes in nursing tasks and activities compared to that before the COVID-19 pandemic., Conclusions: Nursing care is still influenced by the pandemic due to the lack of resources and persistent high workload and needs to be reclaimed and prioritised. Re-establishing high-quality nursing care is a shared responsibility of the organisation and nursing profession, and the organisation needs to create prerequisites for this. Background: Early career nurses (ECNs) can be expected to assume shift charge nurse leadership roles quickly upon entering practice. Since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, junior nurses may find their leadership capabilities tested further as the challenges of leadership are made increasingly complex in the context of an infectious disease outbreak., Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore early career registered nurses' (RNs) experiences of engaging in shift charge nurse roles in hospital settings., Methods: This study used an interpretive descriptive (ID) approach. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 RNs across Ontario, who had up to three years of experience and who had engaged in a shift charge nurse role in a hospital setting. Recruitment and data collection took place from January to May 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed following the principles of content analysis., Results: Content analysis of the 14 participant interviews revealed four main themes: nominated and necessitated into leadership , diverse and demanding responsibilities, factors that help and hinder , and leadership as an impactful experience ., Conclusions: Study findings provide insights into potential strategies to support ECNs in shift charge nurse roles, during the remaining course of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Aim: This study examines the impact of nurse uniforms, the coronavirus pandemic, and the image of nurses and the nursing profession on the career choice of young Muslim Arab women in nursing, with a focus on policy implications., Background: The global nursing shortage poses significant challenges, including in Israel. Attracting young Muslim Arab women to nursing careers is vital. Understanding how nurse uniforms, the pandemic, and perceptions of nurses and the nursing profession shape their career decisions can inform policy interventions., Methods: A cross-sectional study utilized digital questionnaires administered to 200 Muslim Arab women aged 20-30 in Israel. The study adhered to the EQUATOR checklist for cross-sectional studies., Results: Only 29.2% of participants expressed interest in studying nursing. Findings revealed a positive correlation between the pandemic's impact and intention to pursue nursing. A linear regression analysis shows the impact of the white uniform, the image of nurses, and the image of the profession on the choice of a career in nursing., Discussion: The study emphasizes the significance of nurse uniforms, the image of nurses, and the image of the nursing profession in shaping young Muslim Arab women's career choices in nursing. Objective: To evaluate the workload and severity of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with COVID-19., Method: Cross-sectional, analytical study carried out in the ICU of a private hospital. All patients over the age of 18 with a diagnosis of COVID-19 admitted from September 2020 to June 2021 were included. Workload assessed by the Nursing Activities Score (NAS), and severity by the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment. Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed., Results: 217 patients were included, mostly men, mean age 62.41 years, white, obese, non-smokers and sedentary. The average NAS was 84.79. Staffing was in line with legislation and NAS. NAS was not associated with severity. Severity was associated with higher age, gender, comorbidities, sedentary lifestyle, time on mechanical ventilation, hospitalization and death., Conclusion: Workload was high and not associated with severity or outcomes. Severity was associated with demographic and clinical conditions. This study shows the importance of staff sizing, with a view to promoting safety and quality of care.

Objective: to understand nurses' leadership perceptions during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazilian university hospitals, through the lens of John Kotter's concepts and his eight-step change model., Method: a multicenter qualitative research with an analytical design. The sample comprised 139 nurses working in COVID-19 settings, interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. Data were categorized through Bardin's content analysis based on John Kotter's concepts and his eight-step change model., Results: the findings yielded significant insights into nurses' perceptions of leadership during the COVID-19 response, which exhibited characteristics consistent with Kotter's principles. There is evidence of leadership based on the pursuit of knowledge, grounded in polished communication, facilitating teamwork through a relationship of trust and respect. The recognition of the complexity and difficulty of exercising nursing leadership, particularly in crisis contexts, is apparent., Conclusion: nurses' perceptions reinforce essential elements for leadership practice, such as the importance of seeking diverse knowledge, polished communication, relationships based on trust and respect, and recognition of the complexity of leadership, thus presenting characteristics in line with Kotter's principles., Highlights: (1) Nurses' perceptions of leadership during COVID-19 were highlighted. Background: Nursing professional is one of the most stressful jobs, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. When caring for COVID-19 patients, nurses face challenging conditions and limited resources, as well as the fear of infecting themselves and their families, putting them at risk for depression, anxiety, and insomnia. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency, sources, and risk factors for occupational stress among clinical nurses caring for COVID-19 patients in a Vietnamese tertiary hospital., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among all clinical nurses (184 nurses) at a tertiary hospital in Vietnam from March 15 to April 15, 2021. A questionnaire was used for collecting data. Data analysis was done by descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions. Risk factors were identified by adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence interval and P values less than 0.05., Results: The survey was completed by 89.7% (165/184) of clinical nurses. Most participants were female (85.5%) and ≤ 40 years old (97.6%). Overall, participants reported a medium stress level with an Extended Nursing Stress Scale (ENSS) mean score of 1.79 points, and 32.1% had occupational stress. Prevalence of occupational stress among participants caring for COVID-19 patients (34.0%) was not statistically significant difference with that among those who did not (29.4%). Nurses' occupational stress in emergency and intensive care units (50.0%) was substantially higher than that in the other departments (11.7%). The most stressors for participants were difficulties connected to inadequate emotional preparedness, patients and families, and death and dying, with subscale mean scores of 1.97, 1.88, and 1.88 points, respectively. In multivariate analysis, working at an emergency and intensive care unit (OR 4.97), usually or more frequently feeling heavy duty for patients (OR 3.17), and income decrease (OR 3.03) were risk factors associated with occupational stress., Conclusion: One-third of clinical nurses at a tertiary hospital experienced occupational stress, with highest rate occurred at emergency and intensive care units. Objective: to describe factors of influence of telenursing on naturalistic decision making about self-care of people with heart failure during COVID-19., Method: this is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, with 16 participants interviewed after hospitalization for decompensated heart failure. The data was collected using audio and video technology and submitted to content analysis, guided by the Situation-Specific Theory of Heart Failure Self-Care., Result: two thematic categories emerged from the analysis: Self-care as a decision-making process and Factors influencing decision-making, which describe tele-nursing as a support resource for people with heart failure, during changes in care in the pandemic period., Conclusion: it was possible to understand the relationship between telenursing and the establishment of a bond, in order to stimulate naturalistic decision-making by people with heart failure in their daily lives in a coherent way, leading to better health outcomes., Highlights: (1) Different barriers compromise the decision-making of people with heart failure.(2) Nursing theories can guide coherent self-care attitudes.(3) Continuity of care and a support network are necessary after hospitalization.(4) Emotional support for people with heart failure must go hand in hand with conventional treatment.(5) The bond through tele-nursing provides positive health outcomes.

Background:  Nurses play a remarkable role in our healthcare system and contribute to the wellbeing of communities at large. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, nurses faced various challenges to provide adequate patient healthcare., Objectives:  This study aimed to explore the identity work of public hospital nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic., Method:  The study followed a phenomenological qualitative approach with an interpretive view, employing two sampling methods: purposive and snowball sampling. The sample comprised 11 nurses from a public hospital in the Gauteng province. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis., Results:  The findings revealed that the nurses faced identity demands, which resulted in them experiencing identity tensions. There was also a need for recognition and support; their work served a greater purpose and was meaningful to them. The nurses used different identity work strategies, such as family support, spiritual upliftment and meaningful work to deal with the identity tensions and demands they experienced., Conclusion:  Strategies such as counselling and wellbeing programmes should be implemented to assist nurses in dealing with the physical and psychological effects of working in the health sector during pandemics and epidemics. Hospitals and governments should create healthier working environments by conducting workshops, training and upskilling initiatives, encouraging nurses' inclusion in policymaking and implementation.Contribution: The study provided insight into the challenges nurses encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic, how these challenges affected their nursing identity and roles, and the strategies they used to maintain their sense of self in their work.

Caregiving is often associated with negative physical and mental health outcomes, and as the COVID-19 pandemic escalated, caregivers experienced more burden and provided more care with substantially less support. Digital resources may have been one way caregivers managed demands for care and needs for information. This mixed-methods study included surveys and semi-structured interviews with caregivers ( n = 11) to describe experiences and use of digital health resources during the COVID-19 pandemic. Caregivers most often provided significant physical care and experienced reduced or no social support during the pandemic. Caregivers reported the need for improving the quality of telehealth services and digital health resources. COVID-19 will not likely be the last pandemic faced by contemporary society. Purpose: To examine the long-term effects of COVID-19 on surgical nurses., Background: Individuals contaminated with COVID-19 may face several metabolic or psychological issues, primarily in the respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, musculoskeletal and renal systems during the late period. However, the long-term epidemiology is still not clear., Design: Descriptive cross-sectional study., Methods: The study included nurses (n = 509) who had been diagnosed with COVID-19 at least 12 weeks before and worked in surgical departments. We collected the study data via an online survey using the snowball sampling method between December 2021 and May 2022. This study followed the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology Guideline., Results: The mean age of the nurses was 31.66 ± 8.74 years. Nurses stated that they were diagnosed with COVID-19 approximately 36 weeks before participating in this study. We found that the nurses mostly experienced palpitation (83.5%), headache (73.5%), dyspnea (64.1%), anosmia (57.6%), arthralgia (55.7%) and burnout (58.4%) during the late period after COVID-19., Conclusion: The long-term effects of COVID-19 were related to multiple organ dysfunctions., No Patient or Public Contribution: Since the study was conducted with healthy individuals who had previously experienced COVID-19, there is no patient contribution., Relevance to Clinical Practice: This study focuses on the long-term effects of COVID-19 on nurses. In the fall of 2021, the Wick Poetry Center, a recognized international leader in creative writing interventions, launched the website Sacred Breath: Voices of Ohio Nurses in Response to COVID-19 (sacredbreathproject.com) with funding from the Ohio Nurses Foundation. The purpose of the website was to offer Ohio nurses an accessible platform to reflect on their personal and professional lived experiences as caregivers during an historic time of pandemic, sacrifice, uncertainty, and scarcity, and to share their voice with others. What resulted was 204 submissions over a three-month period with participant responses touching on widespread sentiments including grief, fatigue, anger, and resilience. It was from the gap in the current literature on pandemic narratives that the researchers of this study began a basic qualitative thematic analysis of the Sacred Breath project website (SBP) responses to gain a better understanding of how nurses, nurse educators, and nursing students made sense of and gave voice to their personal and professional lived experiences during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While stories of nursing during the Covid-19 pandemic have been widely available and disseminated by popular media, academic studies have been slower to utilize qualitative and experimental methods to specifically address pandemic narratives and the resulting discourses by nurses working in and around clinical settings. The Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University has spent nearly forty years working in the community to address urgent social needs using expressive writing methods that are often overlooked by traditional social and arts outreach. The Wick Poetry Center engaged local academic networks and community health partners to invite nurses, nursing students, and nurse educators the Sacred Breath Project By evaluating responses to the intervention website, this qualitative study is aimed to fill this gap in the current literature as well as begin to understand how nurses made sense of their work lives during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Background: According to the Total Worker Health ® framework, safety culture including a reasonable workload among healthcare workers is essential to the security and well-being of patients, staff, and healthcare organizations. Evaluating the impact of the pandemic on the nursing workforce in different practice areas is critical for addressing workforce health and sustainability. The purpose of this study was to compare work and selfcare experiences among Alabama nurses between practice areas and the early pandemic years (2020 vs. 2021)., Methods: A secondary analysis of cross-sectional Alabama State Nurses Association (ASNA) survey data was conducted. Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance, Wilcoxon rank, and false discovery rates were examined., Results: There were 1,369 and 2,458 nurse survey responses in 2020 and 2021, respectively. By 2021, nurses reported worsening staff shortages, a greater need for retired and new graduate nurses to help with the workload burden, and perceptions of heavier emergency department workloads. Lower proportions of nurses reported the ability to engage in self-care activities and satisfaction with state and federal crisis management. Intensive care nurses were more likely to report staffing shortages while also reporting the lowest ability to engage in self-care., Conclusions: Overall, the Alabama nursing workforce perceived worsening work conditions in 2021 compared to when the pandemic began. Practice areas varied greatly in their responses, with acute and intensive care areas perceiving more difficult work conditions. This study shows the development of a software for calculating the number of nursing team members required for providing care during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Study about the development of a technology based on the literature about data and indicators. The indicators were systematized in the following dimensions: institutional, professional, and occupational structure, all with a focus on coronavirus disease 2019. The software was created to be used on the Web, client-server, in browsers such as Internet Chrome, Explorer, and/or Mozilla Firefox, accessing via an Internet address and also allowing access by Windows, Android, and Linux operating systems, with MySQL database used for data storage. The data and indicators related to the institutional structure for coronavirus disease 2019 were systematized with 10 dimensions and indicators, and the professional and occupational structure, with 14 dimensions and indicators. The construction of computer requirements followed the precepts of software engineering, with theoretical support from the area. In the evaluation of the software, data simulation revealed points that had to be adjusted to ensure security, data confidentiality, and easy handling. Purpose: Adequate medical knowledge and skills are fundamentals for nurse prescribing authority development. This study will explore the potential for developing nurse prescribing training in Iran, where nurses currently lack prescribing authority despite their strong academic nursing education., Methods: This is a study with two phases. At first, in a conventional qualitative content analysis method, with purposive and snowball sampling, from June 2021 to March 2023, 20 participants, including 16 nurses in different clinical, managerial, educational, and policy-making settings, three physicians, and one clinical pharmacist were interviewed. Unstructured interviews were conducted face-to-face or virtually as the situation required during the pandemic period due to Coronavirus disease, 2019 (COVID-19). Qualitative content analysis as developed by Elo and Kyngäs in 2008 was used for data analysis. In the second comparative analysis phase, four masters of science and one doctor of nursing curricula analyzed in the existence of the nurse prescribing prerequisite courses and these five curricula and two potential masters of science in community health and critical care nursing curricula were compared with John Hopkins University curricula., Results: In the qualitative phase, two themes emerged: nursing education challenges and the potential for nurse prescribing training development. These were further broken down into four subthemes: inadequate nurses' knowledge in prerequisite nurse prescribing courses, unprepared educational infrastructure, treatment sector potentials, and educational potentials, with a total of 12 concepts identified. During the comparative phase, it was found that none of the nursing curricula had adequate prerequisite courses for nurse prescribing. However, the Community Health and Critical Care nursing curricula showed potential for developing nurse prescribing training., Conclusions: In the nursing education system, there are some challenges and potentials for prescribing training, and the community health and critical care nursing curricula have the potential capacity to prepare the graduated nurses to prescribe. It needs educational and managerial policies. Purpose: To characterize nurses' experiences of restrictive visitation during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: In early 2023, an exploratory study investigated professional RNs' perceptions of restrictive visitation policies and end-of-life care during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on experiences between March and September 2020. An 11-question online survey containing qualitative and quantitative elements was sent to postlicensure nursing students and alumni of American Public University System (American Military University/American Public University)., Results: Among the 41 survey respondents (response rate of 4%), 75.6% observed patients dying alone due to visitation restrictions during March-September 2020, with 87.8% noting strict no-visitation policies, yet only 10% found it effective. A majority (68.3%) supported allowing some family presence, reflecting negative sentiments toward strict policies; suggestions for enhancing family involvement included technology (78%) and employing volunteers or liaisons (34.1%) to improve patient/family well-being and alleviate nurse burden., Conclusion: The findings revealed insights into nurses' experiences and perspectives on end-of-life care and visitation limitations during the pandemic. Purpose: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), one of the most significant recent emerging infectious diseases, has evolved into a global pandemic, resulting in an unprecedented public health crisis with substantial morbidity. The aim of this study was to investigate the care experiences of nursing staff during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: A qualitative, exploratory interview study. This study was conducted from August 2022 to January 2023. Participants were recruited from a medical center in northern Taiwan. A purposive sampling approach was employed to select the participants, and in-depth interviews were conducted with a total of 30 individuals. The collected data were analyzed using content analysis., Results: The findings of this study revealed five themes that summarized the care experiences of participants during the COVID-19 pandemic, enhanced nursing competence in pandemic mitigation, adherence to clear safety measures, effective adaptation to the stress of the "unknown," and recognition of the meaning of the pandemic mitigation experience., Conclusion: This study informs pandemic readiness for nurses and policy enhancement. Medical institutions and governments must prioritize policies ensuring staffing, PPE access, and mental health support. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between control beliefs about stress and post-traumatic growth among Chinese nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic and to examine the mediating role of basic psychological needs satisfaction and optimism in this relationship. A total of 692 Chinese nurses participated in this online study, who completed the Beliefs about Stress Scale, Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory, Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire, Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Scale and demographic variables between September and October 2020. Results indicate that 48.8% (N = 388) of nurses reported significant post-traumatic growth related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, control beliefs about stress were positively related to post-traumatic growth (r = 0.38, p < 0.001), basic psychological needs satisfaction (r = 0.44, p < 0.001) and optimism (r = 0.47, p < 0.001). In addition, basic psychological needs satisfaction and optimism were both independent and serial mediators of the relationship between control beliefs about stress and post-traumatic growth. Nurses and hospital administrators should focus on increasing nurses' control beliefs about stress and thereby enhancing their post-traumatic growth after experiencing events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Aim: To explore the role of health communication in Shared Decision-Making (SDM) between nursing staff and older people in the community setting., Background: Society and healthcare services are marked by an exponentially ageing population, leading to a significant proportion of patients being older adults with highly demanding care needs. Scientific literature supports shared decision-making as a process that engages patients in their care. However, the increasing use of technology and the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have influenced how nurses communicate with older patients. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how to develop health communication to reach effective, shared decision-making processes., Methods: Whittemore and Knafl's integrative review method, the literature search comprised five databases: PubMed, CINALH, Web of Science, Scopus and PsycINFO., Results: The 12 included studies were synthesised into three study patterns: (1) nurse-older patient health communication relationship, (2) older patients' perspectives and (3) nontherapeutic communication in end-of-life care., Conclusion: This review underscored the crucial role of effective health communication in shaping SDM dynamics between nursing staff and older people in the community setting. Key elements included transparent information exchange, establishing trust and maintaining communication channels with informal caregiving networks. SDM actions were aligned with preserving older people's autonomy, but communication challenges persisted, particularly in end-of-life situations. Advanced care planning was recommended to address these shortcomings and improve communication among older people, healthcare professionals and families., Implications: Implementing educational measures based on verbal and nonverbal health communication in nursing training could be beneficial. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the relationship among secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue, and meaning in life in nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic., Background: Changes in working conditions during the pandemic also changed the needs of nurses. In addition to physical health, the COVID-19 pandemic led to many psychosocial health problems such as sleep disturbances, depression, and traumatic stress. This makes nurses vulnerable to psychological side effects of the pandemic., Design: A cross-sectional study was conducted., Methods: This study was conducted with 166 nurses. Data were collected online at May-June 2021. A Personal Information Form, the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale, Compassion Fatigue Scale, and Meaning in Life Scale were used. The STROBE reporting checklist was followed., Results: As secondary traumatic stress levels increase, compassion fatigue increases, meaning in life decreases, and the search for meaning in life increases., Conclusion: Predictors of secondary traumatic stress were shown to be compassion fatigue, change in sleep habits, meaning in life, marital status, and having a chronic illness. This suggested that working during the pandemic posed significant risks in terms of manifesting negative consequences on mental health in the long term., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd.)

Aim: The aim of this study is to describe and evaluate how nurses caring for COVID and non-COVID patients assess changes in their work and in nursing activities during the two waves of the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted for Estonian nurses working during the first and second waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, using The impact of COVID-19 emergency on nursing care questionnaire. Based on convenience sampling, the data were collected among the members of professional organizations, unions and associations. Responses from the first (n = 162) and second wave (n = 284) were analysed using descriptive statistics, Fisher's exact test and McNemar's test., Results: The COVID-19 pandemic changed the working context during both waves for nurses caring for COVID and non-COVID patients. Changes were considered to a greater extent during the second wave, when Estonia was severely affected, and by nurses caring for COVID patients. During the second wave, the number and complexity of patients increased, and nurses caring for COVID patients performed fundamental care, nursing techniques and symptom control significantly more frequently compared to nurses caring for non-COVID patients., Conclusion: Taking care of COVID patients is demanding, requiring nurses to perform more direct patient care. Aim: To explore the professional identity of nursing during the COVID-19 pandemic in Iran. Professional identity guides nurses' interaction with patients. In the COVID-19 pandemic, recent developments in society's view of the nursing profession are expected to change the perception of nurses' professional identities., Design: The qualitative study used a conventional content analysis approach., Methods: Data were collected using in-depth semi-structured interviews from June 2020 to January 2021. Data analysis was performed using Landman and Granheim's analysis and Lincoln and Guba's criteria to ensure the data's rigour., Results: After analysing the 20 interviews with 17 participants, including 11 nurses with an average age of 32.63 ± 6.71 years and six varius community members with an average age of 38.66 ± 5.85 years, three main categories were formed: (1) The dual role of the media in the two subcategories (the positive role and the negative role of the media), (2) Changes in public view of nursing during the COVID-19 pandemic (respect for avoidance and understanding the value of nursing practice) and (3) Change of professional identity by showing self-sacrifice (dealing with adversity and commitment to professional obligations)., Conclusion: The image in the public view of the nursing profession during the COVID-19 pandemic media differs from before and shows self-sacrifice, professional commitment and humanity in nursing. Nurses' experience of caring during the COVID-19 pandemic has positively affected their professional identity; however, they are concerned about the instability of improving the nursing image in society., Impact: Nursing leaders and policymakers can utilize media platforms to portray the nursing profession in a positive light and emphasize the scientific capabilities of nurses. Aims: To investigate the relationship between the psychological resilience and burnout of nurses caring for COVID-19 patients and to determine the factors that affect their psychological resilience and burnout., Background: In pandemic diseases such as COVID-19, nurses experience burnout due to long working hours, decreased quality of life and anxiety/fear about their own/families' health. Psychological resilience helps to control burnout in nurses and prevent the development of a global nurse shortage., Design: This was a descriptive, correlational study., Methods: The sample of this study included 201 nurses in a Training and Research Hospital. The study used the Brief Resilience Scale and the Burnout Measure Short Version. Data were collected between 4 May and 1 June 2020. Statistical analysis was made with Pearson/Spearman, independent sample t test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test., Results: Nurses reported moderate burnout and psychological resilience, with a negative and highly significant correlation between psychological resilience and burnout levels., Conclusions: In order to increase the quality of patient care/treatment, nurse managers need to reduce nurses' burnout and increase their psychological resilience. Nurses are recommended to adopt a healthy lifestyle, organize training programmes and implement psychological resilience interventions to prevent sleep disorders. This study aimed to analyze the role of nurses in hospital management in the face of COVID-19. The study had a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory approach. The setting was a hospital that was completely transformed to care for patients with COVID-19. At the time of data collection, ten nurses managed the services, and all participated in the semi-structured interview. After thematic analysis, the data were presented in three categories, representing the elements of Donabedian's triad: structure, process, and result. Category 1 highlighted the hospital structure reconfiguration based on material and people management; category 2 addressed the work process restructuring to achieve goals with safety and quality; and category 3 focused on nurses' experiences in describing the results achieved and expected. The analysis highlighted the importance of teamwork, involvement, and adaptation of managers in the face of the challenges of a new and life-threatening disease, scarce resources, and the complexity of human relationships in the crisis. In transformational leadership, these nurses encouraged behavior change, professional growth, and resilience.

Hospital in the Home (HITH) model of care was developed to support the COVID-19 response and the need to deliver care in new ways to ensure secondary care services were free to deliver care to the sickest patients and not be overwhelmed by the COVID-19 patients needing hospital-level care. Intermediate Care Services, led by nursing and allied health stepped up to the challenge and collaborated on the development of the HITH model of care with defined pathways. This provided hospital-level acute health services in the home that was a clinically safe alternative option to inpatient care. The establishment of HITH released bed capacity and resources and therefore prevented the need for expanding hospital inpatient capacity at a time where resources and staff were constrained. Care delivery was achieved by utilising both in-person visits and telehealth. Technology supported the care delivery which allowed patients, whanau (family) and clinicians to be connected.

Background:  Blended learning combines face-to-face and online learning and has recently gained popularity, accelerated by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, often without active evaluation., Objectives:  This study aimed to assess university nursing students' perceptions of a blended learning approach during the COVID-19 pandemic., Method:  The population was 150 third-year nursing students from a university in the Western Cape, South Africa, using all-inclusive sampling. A one-group, pre-and post-evaluation study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire (Student Perceptions of Blended Learning scale). Differences were assessed using Chi-squared and Mann-Whitney U tests with a significance level of p  0.05., Results:  Before implementing blended learning, 128 students (85.3%) completed the questionnaire, while 95 (63.3%) did so after. Demographics and access showed no significant differences between the groups. Post-implementation showed a 10.1% increase in preference for blended learning (χ2 = 2.832, p = 0.092). Ease of use was rated significantly higher before implementation (3.07 ± 0.49), with no significant change post-implementation (2.99 ± 0.58). The blended learning process received lower ratings compared to content, with no significant differences before or after implementation for either (process: 2.55 ± 0.58 vs 2.54 ± 0.63; content: 2.75 ± 0.52 vs 2.79 ± 0.52)., Conclusion:  Nursing students had a positive perception of blended learning, though the online learning component posed challenges with time and module comprehension.Contribution: The findings can help higher education institutions evaluate existing online management systems and guide nurse educators in meeting students' needs when developing module resources.

Overtaxed by the realities laid bare in the pandemic, nursing has imminent decisions to make. The exigencies of pandemic times overextend a health care infrastructure already groaning under the weight of inequitable distribution of resources and care commodified for profit. We can choose to prioritise different values. Invoking philosopher of science Isbelle Stengers's manifesto for slow science, this is not the only nursing that is possible. With this paper, I pick up threads of nursing's historical ontology, drawing previous scholarship on the historical narratives nurses use to understand themselves. Peeling back nursing's myth to alternate points of origin allows me to consider alternate lines of flight, a speculative adventure in paths not taken but paths that exist nonetheless. I go on to examine what a collective ethic of nursing could be, when we make space for these alternate histories, considering the confluences and conflicts that enable nurses to care and those that inhibit them from doing so. The imperative for this lies in the central importance of the reproductive labour of nursing health care, which leads me to a critique of nursing's capitulation to the pressures of late stage capitalism. This is a problem with ethical and ontological implications both for nursing, and also for those who require nursing care, an imperative to think about the kinds of present/futures for health, care, and health care we might cocreate in collaboration and solidarity with the communities in which nurses are imbricated, shedding the trappings of neoliberalism. There is significant power in the vision and praxis of 28 million nurses and midwives worldwide. Our ethics can guide our imagination which can in turn create possibility.
