- Abstract
What caused the Covid-19 pandemic, a natural spillover event or an accident in a Wuhan laboratory? Were the mitigation measures imposed by many governments - such as lockdowns and mask-wearing mandates - based on scientific evidence, or rather aimed at curtailing civil liberties and disrupting economic activities, under the secret maneuvering of a global cabal of politicians and financiers? And were Covid-19 vaccines effective in curbing the spread of the disease, or were they just a profitable scheme by big pharmaceutical companies? These questions and speculations, some legitimate, some dubious, have been swirling around the globe through social media, alternative information outlets, instant messaging apps, and mainstream media since the beginning of the pandemic, feeding the'infodemic'- an overwhelming surge of information, misinformation, rumours and conspiracy theories which continue to linger in public and private discourse. With an original take on concepts and theories drawn from post-truth and disinformation studies, the book analyses the'infodemic'through a series of global case studies. Framing the infodemic as a complex, multi-layered phenomenon with vast geopolitical implications, Gabriele Cosentino reveals the global competition for control in twenty-first century geopolitics between Western liberal democracies and non-Western autocracies, and above all between the United States and China.

- Abstract

- Abstract
In The Virus Touch Bishnupriya Ghosh argues that media are central to understanding emergent relations between viruses, humans, and nonhuman life. Writing in the shadow of the HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 global pandemics, Ghosh theorizes “epidemic media” to show how epidemics are mediated in images, numbers, and movements through the processes of reading test results and tracking infection and mortality rates. Scientific, artistic, and activist epidemic media that make multispecies relations sensible and manageable eschew anthropocentric survival strategies and instead recast global public health crises as biological, social, and ecological catastrophes, pushing us toward a multispecies politics of health. Ghosh trains her analytic gaze on these mediations as expressed in the collection and analysis of blood samples as a form of viral media; the geospatialization of data that track viral hosts like wild primates; and the use of multisensory images to trace fluctuations in viral mutations. Studying how epidemic media inscribe, store, and transmit multispecies relations attunes us to the anthropogenic drivers of pathogenicity like deforestation or illegal wildlife trading and the vulnerabilities accruing from diseases that arise from socioeconomic inequities and biopolitical neglect.

- Abstract
This contributed volume identifies how the information processes of public institutions and citizens have changed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, within a new context that emerged: the infodemic disorder. Public debate is largely characterized today by a crisis of the legitimacy of institutions, accompanied by a crisis of authority in public communication, leading to the emergency of a state of information disorder due specifically to the need to find information related to the coping of the pandemic. This condition is characterized by growing attention to issues related to ‘fake news', ‘misinformation', and ‘media manipulation', that are intertwined in digital platform ecosystems, and the effects of which on democracy, public communication and research, and the sharing of information in the civic sphere are broad and far-reaching. This volume analyzes the links between communication strategies of public institutions, and the resulting citizen communication, in an attempt to tease out how communication processes have changed during the pandemic. It was decided to investigate this infodemic disorder as it appeared in three different geographical contexts: Europe, Canada and Mexico and, at the same time, to bring out the formal and informal coping strategies implemented by public institutions and citizens. Beginning with an introduction to the crisis of information created by the pandemic, the contributors build a theoretical framework, provide contagion data, and subsequently, for each of the geographical contexts analyzed, explore the public communication strategies and those activated by citizens seeking to share information.

- Abstract
Consuming Crisis is a crucial account of how consumer culture capitalized on Coronavirus (COVID-19). Sobande explores how brands claim to care while they encourage people to ‘keep calm and consume'. This critical analysis of the power and politics of marketing examines an eclectic mix of campaigns, content, and experiences. Such work outlines the societal significance of fast-fashion adverts, banana bread's pandemic ‘moment', university social media strategies, and how digital technology mediates memories and work. Based on the belief that brands cannot be activists, Sobande creatively considers how brands construct care, camaraderie, culture, and so-called ‘normal'life during times of crisis. - Abstract
This truly interdisciplinary volume brings together a diverse group of scholars to explore changes in the significance of media and communication in the era of pandemic. The book answers two interrelated questions: how media and communication reality changed during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and how media and communication were effectively studied during this time. The book presents changes in media and communication in three areas: media production, media content, and media usage contexts. It then describes the theoretical and practical, methodological, technical, organizational, and ethical challenges in conducting research in circumstances of sudden change in research conditions, emergency situations and developing crises. Drawing on various theoretical studies and empirical research, the volume illustrates the principles and results of applying diverse research methods to the changing role of media in a pandemic and offers good practices and guidance to address the problems in implementing research projects in a time of sudden difficulties and challenges. This diverse and interdisciplinary book will be of significance to scholars and researchers in media studies, communication studies, research methods, sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies.Chapter 3 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.https://www.taylorfrancis.com/chapters/oa-edit/10.4324/9781003232049-5/ecological-approach-fausto-colombo?context=ubx&refId=aa5bc500-bb40-4ccb-879b-d5c8562efa67

- Abstract
Covid-19 in International Media: Global Pandemic Responses is one of the first books uniting an international team of scholars to investigate how media address critical social, political, and health issues connected to the 2020-21 COVID-19 outbreak. The book evaluates unique civic challenges, responsibilities, and opportunities for media worldwide, exploring pandemic social norms that media promote or discourage, and how media serve as instruments of social control and resistance, or of cooperation and representation. These chapters raise significant questions about the roles mainstream or citizen journalists or netizens play or ought to play, enlightening audiences successfully about scientific information on COVID-19 in a pandemic that magnifies social inequality and unequal access to health care, challenging popular beliefs about health and disease prevention and the role of government while the entire world pays close attention. This book will be of interest to students and faculty of communication studies and journalism, departments of public health, sociology, and social marketing.

- Abstract
Rapid advances in information technology have profound implications for human interaction, mental health, and the field of psychology itself. This book examines research from different subdisciplines across psychology to address the ways in which technology and Big Data provide a unique window into human cognition and behavior. Digital technologies increasingly impact nearly every aspect of our lives, affecting not only our well being but also changing the way we work, design policies, define morality, and even the way we think. Every interaction with smartphones, computers and tablets leaves a leaves a trace, a digital footprint that offers fresh insights to psychologists studying the new frontiers of human behavior. At the same time, the use of public information provided by private citizens--social media postings, digital networks, datasets and internet preferences—requires careful attention to ethical considerations. An especially timely book in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, when so many people were forced to live online like never before. Many of the changes, for individuals, workplaces, and societies, will be long-lasting.

- Abstract
Although global pandemics are not a new phenomenon, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken place in a very different information environment than any pandemic before it. In today's world, information plays a critical role in all areas of life with much of this information being delivered over the internet and social media. People have access to unprecedented amounts of information from both official and unofficial sources. While these channels are beneficial for enabling authorities to obtain information necessary to manage the pandemic, there is also a higher risk of misinformation spread. Mass Communications and the Influence of Information During Times of Crises provides a comprehensive overview of research conducted into the role of information and the media during times of international crises, particularly examining the COVID-19 pandemic. This text provides a better understanding of how to use the media as a tool for managing pandemics in the event of future global health crises. Covering topics such as crisis communication, data acquisition, and social media usage, this book is a dynamic resource for government policymakers, public health authorities, information and communications specialists, researchers, graduate and post-graduate students, professors, and academicians in a wide range of both public health and information-related disciplines.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Digital humour in the COVID-19 pandemic: Perspectives from the Global South offers a groundbreaking intervention on how digital media were used from below by ordinary citizens to negotiate the global pandemic humorously. This book considers the role played by digital media during the pandemic, and indeed in the socio-political life of the Global South, as indispensable and revolutionary to human communication. In many societies, humour not only signifies laughter and frivolity, but acts as an important echo that accompanies, critiques, questions, disrupts, agitates and comments on societal affairs and the human condition. This book analyses citizens'use of social media and humour to mediate the pandemic in a diverse range of countries, including Brazil, India, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The book will appeal to academics and students of media and communication studies, political studies, rhetoric, and to policy makers.

- Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic revealed a major online misinformation problem and a discourse on conspiracy theories that have influenced youths’ attitudes towards vaccination. This thesis aims to examine the role of media literacy in combating misinformation and conspiracy theories related to COVID-19 vaccination. Equipping the youth with media literacy skills helps them read critically, assess media texts, verify the accuracy of information from different sources, and deepen their knowledge about the construction of these media texts. In addition, media literate youth can critically reflect on the truthfulness and intentions behind media content and identify pervasive conspiracy theories. The method used in this study is a cross sectional, self-administrated, face-to-face survey completed by 819 students in five universities across Lebanon. The study assesses the relationship between media literacy, beliefs in conspiracy theories surrounding COVID-19, and vaccine hesitancy. It highlights the importance of implementing digital media literacy within the educational system to enable the young generation to fight the negative consequences of social media. Results indicate a significant positive association between youth media exposure and them believing in COVID-19 conspiracy theories. They also reveal a significant positive association between media illiteracy and the youth's tendency to believe in COVD-19 conspiracy theories. Unexpectedly, the results also show that a portion of the participants still engage in information verification despite trusting media.

- Abstract
Background: Antivaccination views pervade online social media, fueling distrust in scientific expertise and increasing the number of vaccine-hesitant individuals. Although previous studies focused on specific countries, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought the vaccination discourse worldwide, underpinning the need to tackle low-credible information flows on a global scale to design effective countermeasures. Objective: This study aimed to quantify cross-border misinformation flows among users exposed to antivaccination (no-vax) content and the effects of content moderation on vaccine-related misinformation. Methods: We collected 316 million vaccine-related Twitter (Twitter, Inc) messages in 18 languages from October 2019 to March 2021. We geolocated users in 28 different countries and reconstructed a retweet network and cosharing network for each country. We identified communities of users exposed to no-vax content by detecting communities in the retweet network via hierarchical clustering and manual annotation. We collected a list of low-credibility domains and quantified the interactions and misinformation flows among no-vax communities of different countries. Results: The findings showed that during the pandemic, no-vax communities became more central in the country-specific debates and their cross-border connections strengthened, revealing a global Twitter antivaccination network. US users are central in this network, whereas Russian users also became net exporters of misinformation during vaccination rollout. Interestingly, we found that Twitter’s content moderation efforts, in particular the suspension of users following the January 6 US Capitol attack, had a worldwide impact in reducing the spread of misinformation about vaccines. Conclusions: These findings may help public health institutions and social media platforms mitigate the spread of health-related, low-credibility information by revealing vulnerable web-based communities., The authors acknowledge the support from the Lagrange Project of the Institute for Scientific Interchange Foundation funded by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Torino. Background and Aims: Covid‐19 vaccines were disseminated across Europe from the end of 2020. Malta had one of the fastest vaccination rollouts in Europe and by March 2022 most adults had their booster dose. The aim was to investigate adult's perspectives, experiences, and attitudes regarding vaccination in Malta. Methods: An anonymous online survey targeting adult social media users living in Malta was disseminated through social media, with a snowball technique. Demographic information, vaccination uptake, side‐effects, perceptions, and experiences were gathered through quantitative and qualitative means. Participants were sub‐grouped according to their vaccination status and descriptive analysis through frequency was performed. χ 2/Fisher test testing followed by logistic regressions were performed to assess the vaccination perspectives according to vaccination status. Results: Out of 611 participants 79.87% had the booster, 4.91% had two doses awaiting booster, 6.55% refused booster while, 8.67% refused any dose. Booster sub‐group when compared to vaccine hesitant sub‐group exhibited an association with the perception for the need to “continue wearing masks, maintaining physical distance and hand washing following vaccination” (odds ratio [OR]: 5.97 confidence interval [CI] 95%: 1.09–32.36 p = 0.04). Those waiting for the booster dose when compared to those refusing booster, exhibited an association with the perspective that “COVID‐19 vaccine is the solution to returning to normality” (OR: 5.00 CI 95%: 1.12–22.35 p = 0.04). The commonest reason for inoculation was to protect against severe disease (63.08% CI 95%: 58.91–67.07). More pronounced booster adverse effects raised concern about future booster doses uptake. Unwillingness among anti‐booster and vaccine hesitant arose among high socioeconomic background participants, with concern for vaccine safety and adverse effects. Conclusion: Vaccine hesitancy is low yet, vaccination unwillingness even among highly educated may act as a barrier to control the pandemic. Clear, transparent public health communication which targets concerns is crucial, with unified messages from governing bodies optimizing population safety., peer-reviewed

In this article, we would try to find out what kind of the situation the world would find itself in due to the excessive and unwarranted steps taken to arrest the spread of Covid and especially how it would impact the communities facing social deprivation. The article is centred on the exploited communities of India, who form a majority of its population. Besides the communities branded as ‘Untouchables’ by the Hindu religion, they also include others which face societal contempt and stigma such as other lower castes, Adivasis, denotified and nomadic castes, minorities who have converted to other religions, eunuchs etc. During the course of the recent movements for social justice in the country, these communities, which form a majority of the population of India, have started describing themselves as ‘Bahujan’ (people in the majority) as a mark of their solidarity. Bahujan is a conceptual term, which first finds mention about 2,500 years back in the teachings of Buddha. Buddha said, ‘Bahujan Hitay, Bahujan Sukhay’ i.e. what is in the interest of the majority of people of the world, what will bring about their wellbeing, is right. Thus, ‘Bahujan’ is a global term which emphasizes on the unity among the majority and which includes all exploited and deprived sections, including those who are victims of racism and gender discrimination. This concept inspires them to perceive themselves as majority and wage a joint struggle. The word ‘Bahujan’ has been used in the article in this context and meaning.

- Abstract
"Nowadays, social media is a crucial part of our lives. Platforms like Facebook and Twitter play indispensable roles in the modern information ecosystem, impacting many areas of society. Prevalence of users’ speculation and mistrust makes social media a hotbed of misinformation, which is information that is wrong or misleading. Misinformation is one of the biggest concerns associated with the use of social media platforms. The COVID-19 pandemic has become a hot topic of misinformation. Huge amounts of misinformation related to the pandemic have been created on social media, covering the public issues such as facial masks, the COVID test and vaccines, and lockdown policies. One of the consequences of misinformation is opinion polarization, a state in which people are divided into camps such that opinions of people in the same camp are homogenous, while opinions across camps become heterogeneous, even opposite. Social media users with polarized opinions are prone to believing in and spreading misinformation. The lifecycle of misinformation on social media involves three main components: the root messages which contain misinformation, the producers who produce the root messages, and the consumers who consume the root messages and help spread them further. In this dissertation, I studied these three components’ roles in production, dissemination, consumption, and mitigation of misinformation with a focus on the producers of misinformation. Three interrelated research essays have been conducted based on a large, original data set of COVID-19-related misinformation on Twitter. Essay I explores the question: how do producers, root messages, and consumers interact in the production and diffusion of misinformation on social media, and what roles does each of them play? Essay II further anchors on the producers and asks: can producers’ communicative intentions, their choice of semantic-linguistic methods, and their polarity of opinion influence the diffusion of misinformation? Finally, Essay III asks: how to reduce misinformation’s diffusion by leveraging the knowledge of the producers, consumers, and root messages obtained in Essays I and II using the predictive modeling technology? These essays mainly address the research gap that little research has been focused on the roles of misinformation producers in misinformation diffusion. The research can generate deeper understanding of the mechanism behind misinformation diffusion."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

2018. \"'Literature about Medicine May Be All That Can Save Us.'\" The Guardian. As was expected, the country is witnessing an explosion of Covid cases, leading to chaos and mayhem. People are dying for want of oxygen. The protocol for the treatment of Covid patients is faulty and that is one reason for the high number of deaths. Thanks to the protocol, deaths due to other causes are also being added to the Covid toll. In this article, we would try to look at the connections between the Covid pandemic and the doctors. So far, the discussion on the role of the doctors, which is decidedly very important, has largely been one-sided., hydroxychloroquine controversy was not limited to this spat between India and Trump. The kind of charges and countercharges related to this drug during the Covid pandemic amply demonstrate that for the forces which hoped to benefit by its growing demand, human lives were just numbers., {"references":["Narendramodi dot in, \"Aise logon se milein jo coronavirus se ladne ke liye athak prayas kar rahe hain\", March 25, 2020","\"12,000 People per Day Could Die from Covid-19 Linked Hunger by End of Year, Potentially More than the Disease, Warns Oxfam.\" 2020.
