In this study, corona plasma discharge was applied to desize polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and starch on cotton fabrics. Plasma treated and non-treated samples were processed in various steps in a textile firm. The samples were tested to evaluate their weight loss, size dissolution, capillarity, dyeability, pilling resistance and strength values. The surface morphology and the chemical structures were examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses. The experimental results showed that the plasma has positive effects on size removal, hydrophility and the pilling values of the PVA and also starch sized fabrics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synthesis and characterization of copolymer obtained by grafting acrylamide onto hydrolyzed potato starch and its application in cotton yarn sizing were presented in this work. Some process parameters of starch hydrolysis and grafting, like as hydrolysis yield, grafting yield, grafting percentage, graft efficiency, and monomer to polymer conversion were determinated. Molar mass values of hydrolyzed starch and copolymer samples are located in a narrow range of 1 × 105to 1 × 107and 1 × 102to 1 × 104. Grafted hydrolyzed starch, as a sizing agent, gives better results than nongrafted, particularly in terms of sizing uniformity, yarn mechanical parameters, and easier removal in subsequent desizing process. Abstract: Enzyme process and ultrasound power are the two important clean technologies which have potential use in the textile industry like desizing, scouring, dyeing and so on. In the present work, the feasibility of introducing ultrasonic energy in enzymatic desizing process of cotton to improve the desizing efficiency is investigated. The results indicate that ultrasonic power value and cavitation effect were the two most important factors for improving the enzymatic desizing efficiency. The obvious saved treatment time show that the overall reaction rate between enzyme and starch could be accelerated by ultrasonic energy. Comparing with the conventional enzymatic desizing process, the ultrasound assisted system can save half the processing time and improve about 5 percent point in desizing efficiency. In order to solve actual problem in kapok fabric production, special characteristics of kapok fiber and cotton fiber were studied for sizing, including water repellent and oil absorption based on carboxaldehyde radicals of kapok fiber. Solution and similitude theory was adapted to select out three sizes such as partially alcoholized PVA 1299, oxidized corn starch and polyacrylic acid. L9(34)orthogonal experiment method was adapted on three measures involved of solid content, proportion of PVA and core starch, temperature in sizing box. Then three indicators of strength enhancement rate, decrease rate of hairiness and number of abrasive resistance were tested. Finally, change rules from each measure to levels and optimal sizing process were given. The sizing process is as solid content was 9%, ratio of PVA, oxidized corn starch and polyacrylic acid is 1.5: 1: 0.04, best temperature in sizing box is 95°C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The impact of the level of yarn twist on the size pick-up, abrasion resistance and breaking force of yarn was analyzed. A cotton yarn differing only in twist level was used for testing. The sizing process was carried out on a laboratory sizing machine. Sizing conditions were varied, namely the squeezing force and size recipe. According to the results obtained, the level of twist affects the size pick-up, abrasion resistance and breaking force. Based on the coefficient of correlation, it can be claimed that the level of twist in relation to the size pick-up and breaking force is very high, confirming that a very close correlation is systematically proved. Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is used as a powerful oxidizing agent in order to make perform a simultaneous desizing and bleaching process on loomstate cotton fabrics. Experimental results demonstrate that three factors (the concentration of KMnO4, the treatment time and temperature) have notable impacts on the quality of bleached cotton fabric. The effects of these variables are evaluated with regards to whiteness index, tensile strength, residual size and water absorbency. At a constant oxalic acid concentration, the optimized condition is obtained in 3 g/l KMnO4, at 90°C and 10 min treatment time. The results demonstrate that KMnO4 can be accepted as a multipurpose agent for bleaching loomstate cotton fabrics and has the potential to be used as an alternative method for the simultaneous desizing and bleaching of greige cotton fabric. The article focuses on the study to shorten the time of the combined pretreatment process on cotton fabrics by using microwave energy. The use of microwave energy led to rapid drying and resulted on a loss of strength and whiteness. Another problem observed in the microwave processes were the degree of desizing. A prepared peroxidisulfate salt and Leonil EB was used to increase the degree of desizing. A pre-steaming process was applied before the microwave period.
