2. Investigating Deep-Learning NLP for Automating the Extraction of Oncology Efficacy Endpoints from Scientific Literature

Abstract

Benchmarking drug efficacy is a critical step in clinical trial design and planning. The challenge is that much of the data on efficacy endpoints is stored in scientific papers in free text form, so extraction of such data is currently a largely manual task. Our objective is to automate this task as much as possible. In this study we have developed and optimised a framework to extract efficacy endpoints from text in scientific papers, using a machine learning approach. Our machine learning model predicts 25 classes associated with efficacy endpoints and leads to high F1 scores (harmonic mean of precision and recall) of 96.4% on the test set, and 93.9% and 93.7% on two case studies. These methods were evaluated against - and showed strong agreement with - subject matter experts and show significant promise in the future of automating the extraction of clinical endpoints from free text. Clinical information extraction from text data is currently a laborious manual task which scales poorly and is prone to human error. Demonstrating the ability to extract efficacy endpoints automatically shows great promise for accelerating clinical trial design moving forwards.

Abstract

This article aimed to analyze the attitudes of undergraduate students of business administration and accounting with regards to contents and subjects of mathematics and statistics. Specifically, it was analyzed the potential association of evaluations that students make in relation to quantitative methods with their academic performance. The sample involved 275 students of undergraduate courses in business administration and accounting from a federal university of a Brazilian state. In relation to analytical techniques, initially it was verified the factorial structure of each dimensions of the construct of interest (attitude), to verify the alignment with the initial forecast of the scale. Then, the variables were added in each dimension, in order to generate the general measure to be carried to the analysis in conjunction with other constructs. In the analysis of influence of dimensions of attitude about the student performance, was applied to statistical technique of multiple regression analysis. As main results, it was found that the variables 'dedication' of students in mathematics and statistics and student performance in mathematics in high school were the most important variables in the explanation of the student’s academic performance, with the dedication being more important.

Abstract

This paper analyses the potential effect of multiple item scales’ number of points on the descriptive results and psychometric characteristics. A literature review was carried, followed by a field survey. The data were collected by means of 3 structured questionnaires to measure management student’s perception of profession reputation and personal identification. The metrics were adapted for scales of 5 (1 to 5), 7 (1 to 7) e 11 (0 to 10) points. The total sample had 285 respondents, and the procedures of analysis involved descriptive statistics and reliability analysis. The results indicated significant differences, although small ones, in the descriptive measures, on the other hand, the psychometric analyses had no variation related to the number of scale points. The main conclusion is that the use of scale with the 3 number of points can generate good results for researches; thus, the researcher may decide which scale use, considering the study’s needs and the sample characteristics.

Abstract

RESUMOO propósito central deste artigo foi analisar a relação entre os construtos valor percebido (e seus antecedentes de qualidade e sacrifício), satisfação dos clientes de serviços, e comportamento de boca a boca (nas dimensões de intensidade e favorabilidade). A partir da revisão da literatura sobre os temas, foram enunciadas treze hipóteses de pesquisa, que foram aplicadas, tomando como contexto empírico o setor de academias de ginástica da cidade de Fortaleza (Ceará). Foi pesquisada uma amostra de 108 respondentes, com coleta de dados feita por meio de questionário estruturado, aplicado em quatro diferentes academias. Os construtos foram avaliados em separado, por meio de estatísticas descritivas e a análise das hipóteses foi feita com o apoio da técnica estatística Análise de Regressão Múltipla, realizada em cinco modelos distintos. Os resultados encontrados mostraram a consistência de nove das treze hipóteses, indicando, especialmente, que a satisfação e o valor percebido são antecedentes consistentes da favorabilidade e da intensidade das ações de boca a boca dos clientes. Os resultados apontaram elementos para uma melhor compreensão das relações definidas, e, também dá indicações para futuras pesquisas envolvendo os temas tratados.ABSTRACTThe main purpose of this article was to analyze the relationship between the constructs perceived value (and its antecedents of quality and sacrifice), satisfaction of services customers, and word of mouth behavior (in its dimensions of activity and praise). From the literature review, 13 hypotheses were announced, and these hypotheses were submitted to test taking as empirical context the sector of fitness gyms from the city of Fortaleza (Ceará). A sample of 108 respondents was searched, with data collection done with a structured questionnaire, administered in four different fitness gyms. The constructs were evaluated separately, by using descriptive statistics, and the analysis of the hypotheses was done with the support of the statistical technique Multiple Regression Analysis, used in five different models. The results showed the consistency of 9 of the 13 hypotheses, indicating specially that satisfaction and perceived value are consistent antecedents of word of mouth praise and the word of mouth activity. The results pointed elements for a better comprehension of the relations defined, and also indications for future research involving the subjects analyzed.RESUMENEste estudio tuvo como finalidad principal analizar la relación entre los constructos de valor percibido (y sus antecedentes de sacrificio y calidad), satisfacción de los clientes de servicios y la conducta boca a boca (en sus dimensiones de intensidad y favorabilidad). A partir de la revisión de la literatura en estos tres asuntos, se enunciaron trece hipótesis de investigación, que se aplicaron tomando como contexto empírico el sector de los gimnasios de la ciudad de Fortaleza (Ceará). Se investigó una muestra de 108 encuestados, con la recolección de datos realizada por medio de cuestionario estructurado, aplicado en cuatro diferentes gimnasios. Los constructos se evaluaron por separado, mediante estadísticas descriptivas; para el análisis de las hipótesis se utilizó la técnica estadística de Análisis de Regresión Múltiple, realizada en cinco modelos diferentes. Los resultados mostraron la consistencia de nueve de las trece hipótesis, indicando especialmente que la satisfacción y el valor percibido son antecedentes consistentes de la favorabilidad y de la intensidad de la conducta boca a boca de los clientes. Los resultados indicaron elementos para una mejor comprensión de las relaciones definidas y también proporcionaron orientaciones para futuras investigaciones sobre los temas tratados.

Abstract

The Android mining sandbox approach consists in running dynamic analysis tools on a benign version of an Android app and recording every call to sensitive APIs. Later, one can use this information to (a) prevent calls to other sensitive APIs (those not previously recorded) or (b) run the dynamic analysis tools again in a different version of the app -- in order to identify possible malicious behavior. Although the use of dynamic analysis for mining Android sandboxes has been empirically investigated before, little is known about the potential benefits of combining static analysis with the mining sandbox approach for identifying malicious behavior. As such, in this paper we present the results of two empirical studies: The first is a non-exact replication of a previous research work from Bao et al., which compares the performance of test case generation tools for mining Android sandboxes. The second is a new experiment to investigate the implications of using taint analysis algorithms to complement the mining sandbox approach in the task to identify malicious behavior. Our study brings several findings. For instance, the first study reveals that a static analysis component of DroidFax (a tool used for instrumenting Android apps in the Bao et al. study) contributes substantially to the performance of the dynamic analysis tools explored in the previous work. The results of the second study show that taint analysis is also practical to complement the mining sandboxes approach, improve the performance of the later strategy in at most 28.57%., Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures.
